GRAND INDEED!
Last night Matt and I hung up this beautiful flag that my grandmother gave me when she moved out of her house a few years ago. She has always had a thing for flags and had many in her house. This MAY have been a flag my grandfather brought back from WWII (because he did bring some home), but I’m going to guess it was a vintage find. We hung the ginormous flag on the porch in preparation for a party this weekend.
Also hung on the walls – some new Victory Garden posters!!
I now have these hung in three places in my house – that’s how much I love them. Just when I ran into Joe at the Seattle Fremont Market, we’ve been talking up doing a smaller set of four posters – 8×10 so they are easily frameable for a sale on OpenSky.
I picked up these white frames at Target for $6 a piece and put the posters (which come with a matted look) inside. The OpenSky sale will be coming in the next few weeks I hope!
Love how the make the porch feel more like a room (although I might take them down if a hurricane comes : ) )
I’m going to stick with my Monday Pump class for a bit because it’s mostly free weights anyways, but I decided to give up on traditional Body Pump for now – the bar was just too awkward to lift properly and it was hard for me to find the balance between challenging weight and a bar I could safely lift.
Thus, today I went to the gym and did a weight circuit using both machines and free weights. I felt great about it because I was able to use so much more weight with the support of the machines and felt I got a great burn! I did a circuit of 15 reps x 2 – took me about 30 minutes. Then some mega foam rolling. Plus 30 minutes of walking there and back.
Man, the weathermen were not joking about the heat!!
I walked outside with my lunch and my whole camera fogged. Back inside I went!
Lunch in the living room : )
I had a random mix today – leftover gratin
PB toast
And cottage cheese with jam and some of Matt B’s crackers
Need to go to the grocery store for supplies and we have a meeting with a pediatrician this afternoon!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Looks so pretty on your bright white porch!
Amanda @flecksofgreen says
The flag is perfect and so beautiful! I love the wall hung moroccan star? lights hunge to the left of the flag too 🙂
Sana says
The flag looks lovely on the porch! I have not been out since 8 am today, NOT EXCITED!
Lindsey @ Pas de Deux says
Love the flag as wall decor! Have fun at the party– we’re sorry to miss it (though I guess missing a party for a beach vacation is not the worst thing, haha!) Happy Weekend, and Happy 4th!
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I love your porch! It’s so cozy! 🙂 It is brutal out there. It feels like an oven!
Lisa says
There’s never a bad time for a good hunk of bread slathered in creamy goodness!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Wow, that is very cool that you have such an old flag! I was also mega into the foam rolling this morning.. my hamstrings are so, SO tight right now. I think yoga is long overdue!
Nadeanne says
I doubt it’s from WWII…there weren’t 50 states at the time…
Amanda M says
That is a post 1959 flag since it has 50 stars. So it may be older, but definitely not from WWII.
KathEats says
So smart of you all!!
Carly says
I want your porch. So cute! I’m jealous!
Susan says
Love the flag against the white wall of your porch! It must not be older than 1960, since it has 50 stars.
KathEats says
Wonderful observation!!!
Kimberly says
I need to go to the grocery store too. I am really scrounging but I am holding out until I move to south Charlotte on Monday! I can’t wait to go to the grocery store (and move of course)! 🙂
KathEats says
ooo where in South CLT!?
Kimberly says
Right by the intersection of Randolph and Wendover. Very close to Elizabeth and uptown 🙂
KathEats says
That’s not very south 🙂 I thought you meant Ballantyne area!
KathEats says
Nice area though!
Erica says
Kath, I am intrigued by the bowls you do with dairy + baked good, like Greek yogurt + a crumbled muffin or the cottage cheese + crackers. You should do a post about them like you have the SIAB and overnight oats posts! I’ve never seen anyone else eat a muffin like that, heh.
KathEats says
I love anything with contrasting textures!!
Although I don’t really like it when bread gets soggy in vegetable juice on a plate…sO i had to be careful with this lunch and the gratin + bread plate!
Alyssa (pb and oatmeal) says
Beautiful flag!
Char says
WW11 end in 1945. The current flag of 50 states started towards the end of 1959. Don’t believe it’s from WWll unless your Grandfather got it from “Back in the Future”.
Johanna B says
BHG (Better Homes & Gardens) needs to do a feature on your porch STAT! I can only dream of having one similar to it one day.
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
Your porch looks great!! That flag is beautiful, and the framed posters really add a nice home-y touch.
Amelia says
My sister had a big flag like this one that she hung in her bedroom when we were growing up. Yours looks beautiful on your porch. 🙂
Sorry to hear that you had to put Body Pump on hold temporarily but glad you can still keep up a routine! Safety first. I had an instructor this past fall that pumped up through her due date then finally was induced the day after she taught her last class because she was tired of waiting. She said the baby must have liked the music. 😉 I know Erica at itzyskitchen also taught pump right up to the end. Different strokes for different folks.
KathEats says
🙂
I could keep going – the weight are fine. It’s more just the positions and things that aren’t so good for my lower back
Healthy Living Val says
Love the look of your porch and the Victory garden prints. Can’t wait to snap some up on OpenSky!
Lee, Anytime Health says
You do such a great job making your home…your home! I’ve had an eye on those graphics ever since you posted them months ago! Enjoy your weekend Kath 🙂
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
That gratin still looks delicious! And everytime I see an american flag my first thought is that I hope they didn’t let it touch the ground! My dad took all the rules regarding flags very seriously and taught them to us growing up. Haha I was scared to handle the flag!
KathEats says
Haha. I think those rules are sort of silly. When I first got this flag I thought “tablecloth!” and my mom was like “NOOOOO!!!” I didn’t realize there were so few things you could do with a flag. I love the USA and would like to put the flag everywhere – no disrespect at all! But I guess it might come off the wrong way, so we’re sticking with traditional hangings. I can’t say it didn’t touch the porch floor during its hanging yesterday though..
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
hahahaha I figured it did, that would have been very difficult to finagle.
Janelle says
For some reason, you seem so… Southern to me. I like it. 🙂
kate says
Did you go with one of the pediatrician groups in town? I like how they have such late hours so I know I can call whenever I have a question.
KathEats says
Yup
Annette @FitnessPerks says
I love your porch! It is very pretty and so open and fresh looking 🙂
Catalina @ Cake with Love says

Kathy W. says
I love the white frames! Your porch looks totally party-worthy!
Emily M. says
your huge hunk-a toast with pb has me wanting the exact same right about now! its such a classic and so simple, but besides maybe OIAJ, nothing beats it.
Sarah (The Simple Dietitian) says
Aw, I love it! The flag looks superb, Kath. 😀
Julia H. @ Going Gulia says
What a cool story that would be if the flag is indeed one that was brought back from the war. Little piece of history on your porch!
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
The porch looks great with the flag and the posters, but you might think about the fact that with the bright sunshine, the posters might fade. Just a thought. Lunch looks tasty!
KathEats says
That’s ok with me because this was the best spot for them in the house 🙂
Elisabeth says
The flag looks great on the white beadboard, as do the prints. I would definitely buy them if they came to OS! Hope the pediatrician turns out to be a good one!
Tonya says
omg only a pregnant woman could be enjoy and be forgiven such a random mix of goodies LOL. Beautiful flag!
Kylie @ immaeatthat says
Your porch is gorgeous!:)
Amy @ Garden Therapy says
Love the look of these crackers.. can you post the recipe again? I am unsure which post it was in! I am dying to try them out and make them. 🙂

Your porch is seriously gorgeous. You guys have done such an incredible job with it.
And haha – I’ve been dealing with a foggy camera myself these days! I have to remember to “temper” it outside before I go to take my pictures!
BroccoliHut says
I have grown to love the victory garden posters too–they were hanging in all of the nutrition classrooms at Meredith (where I got my MS), so I’ve spend many hours staring at them, whether I liked it or not 😉
Alicia says
Kath, I would love to see a post just about your porch. I think so many of us look at your porch pictures and wish longingly for our own. Are there skylights in the porch? The natural light in there seems amazing. And what does this amazing porch look like from outside? We need a total porch pictorial.
KathEats says
You are in luck! There is one I posted a few months ago : )

Andrea @ The Skinny Chronicles says
Oooh, I love the vintage-y posters. Very cool! Very much my motto on life! Happy Friday.
Connie says
I need some of those posters! Please tell us when they go on sale. I just did a kitchen remodel in a 1923’s bungalow and need, need, need.
Annie says
Hmmm – Connie’s got me thinking here! My 1920s kitchen is currently ripped out down to the studs for a remodel. Those posters might look really spiffy on my new walls.
Mom says
Love the flag! Love the posters!
Angel7 says
I love how light & airy your back porch is! It gets great natural light!
And I absolutely love the posters!!!

I have a thing about flags too. I particularly like the Stars and Stripes but not as much as our Union Jack 🙂 It looks great hanging on your wall like that.
