It was so fun touring the sights with Larbs today because she cares about all the same things that I do! She is always one step ahead navigating our next destination with her phone or researching a shop or restaurant. It was hilarious checking in to the conference when they asked for our last names: “Younger & Younger!”
We headed down to the waterfront after checking in to seek out caffeine and food sights
It was such a beautiful day to be out walking!
I got a Blue Bottle cappuccino – always amazing
Larbs is also a fashionista. She is French Connection meets Seven Jeans and I am Old Navy fused with LOFT. What can I say? I like comfortable clothes.
She insisted the shoes I had planned to wear 1) out of season (they were sandals) and 2) Not a good match for my outfits. Everyone here is in boots and I did bring some boots but I left them at Larbs‘s place, convincing myself I did not need 5 pairs of shoes for two days.
Turns out I DID need those boots! So we did what any girls would do – went boot shopping. And we went straight to Loehmann’s! Our favorite family discount shop
I came out with a sleek pair of everyday black multipurpose boots – 20% off to boot!
Ahem, Larbs wore these!
After quickly changing clothes, we met up with some other bloggers and walked to the evening event!
This year’s Friday night feast was much more intimate than the previous two, but the food was as good as ever.
The evening started with a Sabra hummus display of all kinds of hummus
21st Amendment just for you Kanz!
After meeting a bunch of new friendly blogging faces, we headed upstairs to the main event – a taste-tester’s dream of flavors.
They had everything from blogger-inspired recipes of comfort food to tarts and ravioli to two chef-made stations. If you’re curious, you can see the whole menu in the program PDF here.
Favorite Bites:
- The perfectly sweet Honey Cornbread
- The garlicky Lentil Salad
- The crunchy and rich Brandada Salt Cod Cakes
- The hot pink BEET RAVIOLI WITH GOAT CHEESE + ARUGULA <—- incredibly delicious!!
Foodbuzz opened the floor up for the evening’s agenda – with the classic Beth T at the mic! Beth now works as Foodbuzz’s community manager!
I was incredibly honored to win a new award this year – the Alaska Seafood Green Choice Award. As the sustainability sponsor of the weekend, the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute, who is helping to ensure the whole Foodbuzz Festival is as green as possible with things like composting, selected KERF as its Green Choice Winner. I by no means think I am a perfect example of green living, but I do my best and was humbled by the recognition.
Double blushing occurred when KERF was voted the 2011 Best Healthy Living Blog!!!
All I can say is thank you from the bottom of my heart!!
A blurry shot of my dinner mates. Very much enjoyed meeting some new faces tonight (and catching up with the not-so-new!) Hope to get to know many more of you tomorrow!
Did you think I skipped dessert!?
Heaven’s no!
Since they published the dessert menu online a few weeks ago, Larbs and I have been building up excitement for it.
It TOTALLY lived up to expectations!! My favorites were the Creamy Italian Nougat and Valrhona Chocolate Ganache Bite and the Mascarpone Cheesecake on a Gingersnap Crumble. And the Gingerbread Macaroon!!
Larbs and I have been up for 24 hours now, so I can’t wait to close my eyeballs!!
Lynn @ the actor's diet says

Congratulations on both awards, Kath! You & your blog definitely deserve it – (along with Daily Garnish) yours is my favorite blog & I look forward to reading every day. I really appreciate your dedication to 3 quality posts per day 🙂
Oh, and your new black boots are super adorable!
Kerstin says
Congratulations on your awards. I love your blog and think its great that you are out here (I work in SF). Hope you brought some warm clothes, its unusually chilly! Have a great time with your sister.
Emmy (WIne and Butter) says
WELL DESERVED sweet lady! And you ARE an amazing representation of green living – part of the reason I read you blog is as a daily reminder to be more green, and for little tips on how to do it.
Thanks partly to you I’ve got the food and the transport part almost nailed (okay im at a disadvantage because I cant drive anyhow) – now I just really need to switch focus to the clothes… 🙁
San Fransisco is an amazing city! Please please PLEASE tell me you are going to Tartine!? Goats cheese panini!!!!!!
Tini says
Kath. This is a great post! Really real and down to earth- no b.s. typical food blogger sugar coated exclamation point post. LARBS seems like a great influence. Congrats on all of your achievements. Kath, you are always reliable, 3 x a day never fail to tell us your story. Thanks for working so hard, so us readers tune in and always can depend on you. XOXO
Pam says
Congratulations on your awards Kath – you work hard at your blog, and spreading the ‘green’ message.
Those awards are well-deserved! Enjoy the rest of the event.

Looks like a great event, I’m sure the food was amazing..

Wow, awesome post. The leaf in the latte is food art!
Congrats on your award, that’s awesome!!
“This year’s Friday night feast was much more intimate than the previous two, but the food was as good as ever.” <– that's good to hear. Last year's Fri night event was pretty big feeling to me.
And the desserts…nice.
The blogger pics..nice. First one I've seen of the whole FB fest of any other bloggers in a group shot is this post of yours 🙂
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
Congratulations!!! Sounds like you had quite a day: adventures with Larbs, new boots, amazing food and well deserved recognition!
susan says

Hillary says
A huge congrats to you on both of your wins, Kath! Enjoy the trip.
Gillian says
Aww so jealous your at foodbuzz! I was hoping to be there with my cousin…checking in we would have been “Young and Young” 🙂
Karen says
I thoroughly enjoyed this dispatch from the road, Kath. The comparisons of yours and Larbs’s styles was oh so funny. It’s refreshing to hear you poke fun at yourself. I’m a comfort over style gal myself so I can relate so well to those conversations with “concerned” sisters and friends!
HUGE congrats on your two awards, Kath, esp. the overall best healthy living blog. Your blog represents the epitomy of that award – a gentle, balanced approach to healthy living. I’m so happy for you and proud of you!
Love ya,
Karen.
Brittnie (A Joy Renewed) says
Congrats!! What an honor!
You and your sister’s style preference sounds identical to me and my younger sister. I am an AT Loft (comfy clothes) girl all the way and my sister is totally trendy – heels, jackets, leggings, boots, scarfs, etc. She is always giving me fashion tips – “you really should throw away those shoes, you need new jeans,” etc etc. She tries to keep me looking good – ha – but it’s a hard job. 🙂 Your dress with the boots looks awesome.
Shelby says
I’m surprised you didn’t head to Biscoff Coffee Corner on Pier 39 for a caffeine fix! Your pics are great, love the new boots!
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
Woah! Great pics! -Verry jealous haha 🙂
Sally says
Congrats on the awards!
Those boots are super cute – you’ll get a lot of use out of them! Your sister is very brave to traipse around in heels like that, though!!
Sally says
I just re-read that and realized that the thought in my brain didn’t quite make it through my fingers. Her heels are lovely, I just meant that they don’t look comfortable for walking. Doh!
Mom says
You should have seen her traipsing down high steps at the Dean Dome (UNC-Chapel Hill) at her high school graduation. I was a wreck.
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Congrats on the two awards!
I would have been all over that beet ravioli too. 😀
Brittany says
Congratulations on best healthy living blog – that’s awesome!! Wish I could have been there to see congratulate you in person! Have fun this weekend.
Beth WA says
Congratulations on your awards. I am a loyal reader, and you deserved these awards. You have helped me incorporate so many healthy foods into my life in delicious ways. Especially oatmeal.
Beth WA
kelsey @ living the gluten free life says
Congratulations! Good thing you had the new boots to accept your award!
Susan H. @ the food allergy chronicles says
Congradulations on your awards! You put alot of work into your blogs and deserve all the recognition!
I can totally relate on the fashion…whenever I get together with my two girlfriends I always feel like I am on ‘What Not To Wear”. Last time I got together with them I ended up purchasing a pair of tall black boots…seeing them in a couple of weeks…not sure what they will decide I am lacking in style! lol!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
Congrats on your awards, Kath!! You most definitely deserve them. 😉 Looks like you guys had some fantastic eats!!
katie @KatieDid says
You deserve those awards so much, congrats!!! Have a great weekend!!
Carla @Will Run for Health says
Congrats Kath! I too have a taller, more fashion younger sister. I’m all about the Dansko and she’s all about the boots and heels. Enjoy your trip!
Dad says
Congrats Kath! And to think you owe all that healthy living to me:
o over your pleas for more, only allowed you to have Oscar Meyer Lunchables once a week,
o only let Mom make boxed mac’n’cheese once a week,
o enforced the no eating all the Halloween candy rule after trick-or-treating
o made you eat your veggies — what again did you like besides potatoes and rice?
o forced you to go into the woods and hike despite your fear of bears and snakes
o taught you to read while walking
Sara says
What a sweet comment. Thank goodness for Dads.
Mom says
Yes but who started taking pictures of her the day she was born and helped show her how much fun photography was?
Becca says
Oh this made me laugh! Kath always picked on me for being healthy, and now look…she’s one of the healthiest women in America 🙂 Gives me hope for my girls…who beg for mac-n-cheese everyday!
Mom says
Becca, You let those darling girls eat all the mac and cheese they want!
KathEats says
Hahah – I can’t deny any of these!! But also, know that making me try “one bite” of vegetables was not effective – there were many peas in napkins.
Dad says
Yeah, I still find some of the things my parents made me eat revolting especially liver and boiled yellow squash. Still don’t know if this is an effective parenting technique for anyone.
Jodie says
Congratulations on both awards Kath! I’ve been following your blog for years but I don’t think I’ve ever commented before… your funny, sweet account of the special friendship between sisters (and the things only they can tell us and make us do!) made my heart swell so much that this little lurker had to come out to say thanks for all you do with your blog.
(Also I’m going to call my two sisters today – we live in different countries now and it’s totally things like fashion lessons and equal interests when traveling that I miss right now!)
Mom says
Jodie,
What a nice comment, esp since I was the one who used to hear Laura crying when Kath pushed her off the couch (when they were preschoolers.)
Yes, call your sisters. I always wanted one!
Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles says
What an amazing time…. and those boots are awesome! You’ll be able to wear them all the time! Cute, cute! Have fun!
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
congrats, kath!! that is such an amazing award to receive. you should be very proud.
what a fun day with your sister — i love the way you described your styles! you both are super cute 🙂
Jen on the Edge says
Congratulations on your awards!
Love the new boots. What I really want to know is where you found that great dress?!?!?
KathEats says
Thanks Jen! The dress was actually a find at a clothing swap I went to in Cville!
Jen says
Congrats on your awards! Although I will be honest and say I’m surprised at the Green award, while I do think you create an awareness of it, there are so many blogs that are particularly about Green Living as their main blogging focus. Your blog is more about you and your everyday life to me. I don’t mean that in a negative way – just how it is.
KathEats says
Well this event is food blogs
Jen says
Yes I know that and I am referring to “Green” food blogs – not just environment, etc. But like I said, I understand re: the awards, it’s just my (small) opinon. 🙂
Lindsay says
I’m in your hummus photo! 🙂
KathEats says
Awesome!! Hope to see you today!
Amanda says
Wow, congratulations, Kath! That’s a big deal! 🙂
The food looks incredible. Very jealous!

Cait's Plate says
Ah! LOVE the photos (and Larbs’ shoes!). And that cappuccino!!!
Can’t wait for you to sleep – I’d be a mess if I hadn’t slept for 24 hours!
Emily says
Congrats, Kath! You deserve it:) Younger & Younger definitely has a ring to it.
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Congrats on both awards Kath, very much deserved! I’m not sure how many more of these foodbuzz recaps I can read though without kicking myself for not going!
Nancy says
Congratulations on your awards! I am sure this recognition will continue to bring you new readers who will enjoy your page as much as I do! There’s nothing better than doing what you love and excelling at it — great job!
Meagan says
What an exciting day! Conferences, good company and delicious food always make a winner!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Congrats girl! You deserve it! 🙂
How fun it must be to get to go with your sister! And I LOVE the new boots! 😉
Marie@feedingfive says
I am so glad you won that award, you absolutely deserve it. How fun that you and your sister got to experience this together. I can only imagine all the work that goes into your blog, so many have learned from you and will continue to do so, keep up the EXCELLENT work.
p.s. I voted for you but even if you hadn’t won it wouldn’t change the influence you’ve had. We all would have just figured the votes were miscounted.
JenATX says
Yay, great job Kath!
And I do agree, sandals are out of season! But fashion is what we want to make of it right? Glad you got to do some shopping with the sis though 🙂
Becca says
So proud of you! Congrats on you awards!!
Meredith says
Congratulations on your awards!! Have a great weekend in San Fran, your pics are making me want to visit 🙂 I love your sister’s coat, I was actually looking at a very similar one online yesterday @ OLD NAVY – 60 beans! 😉 I think your outfit with the new boots is very stylish!!
Noga says
You’re in my city!! Have fun (sorry for the freezing weather). Btw, who is Kanz? you always mention him, I’ve been suspecting it’s you dad but I am not sure.
KathEats says
It’s matt’s nickname!!
Zoe @ loseweightandgainhealth says
I am so thrilled you won. This is totally well deserved. Congratulations and keep blogging

jamie Stolarz says
Congratulations, Kath! What an accomplishment! You are truly inspiring! (By the way, I love your boots!)
donna says
Congrats! Well deserved!
Erica says
Hi Kath! You’ve probably answered these questions a million times. But why are yours and your sister’s last names the same? And why do you call your husband Kanz?
KathEats says
We have the same last name because I kept my name when I got married.
And Kanz is my nickname for Matt – short for Kanzi the bonobo who can do sign language!
Gem says
Congratulations Kath! Very well deserved on both accounts 🙂
Meg says
Congrats on your awards, Kath! I know in the comments of a recent post you mentioned that you don’t necessarily consider yourself to be a healthy living blogger. I’m guessing winning the award has changed your mind a little bit?
KathEats says
Yeah 🙂
Leslie says
Congratulations to you on your award. It is always nice to be reconized for success in your professsion. I read your blog daily and have for a few years. I am appreciative that you take the time to post each day no matter what else may be going on(moving, opening a business, travel, family issues etc) I find that I am influenced in a positive way by what I read here. I am closer to your mom’s age, (Love her blog) but find your message that is relevant to many. I believe that your success has come from the fact that you have been able to change and adapt to remain at the top year after year. You have set the standard. Many have emulated you, and I’m sure there are critics as well. Thank you for hanging in there through it all. I look forward to reading along as your journey continues.
KathEats says
Thanks Leslie!!
Lani says
Wow, congrats on the awards,
Kath! Much deserved.:) The Ferry building is one of my favorite places, ever. It’s so nice you are getting on some sisterly bonding, too.
Enjoy SF!
Katherine says
Congrats!!! You are very deserving of your awards! In the very short time that I have been reading your blog (maybe 2 months?), I have already introduced so many new healthy foods into my diet and my family’s diet. You make healthy eating seem easy and natural, as it should be! Have a blast this weekend with your sister!
Cat says
You would have been correct with the sandals about 72 hours ago, but our weather went from Indian Summer (the most peeeeeerfect time in San Francisco) to our version of winter in the past two days. Too bad Foodbuzz wasn’t last weekend! The weather was in the low 80s and beautiful!
hemp jogger says

Congratulations on your awards, or perhaps they should be called rewards, for all of the
obvious hard work and dedication to your blog. I, for one, am happy for all of your hard
work as I love your blog. It gives me great inspiration to keep going to the gym and “try” to
eat better. So, congratulations once again!!!
Julia H. @ The Petite Spiel says
Great boots! I’m a big fan of boots…I actually spent a good two years trying to find a cute pair (yes, I really am that indecisive of a shopper) and finally bought some at Target this summer. I wear them almost every day!
