All my troubles seemed so far away!
I’ve had a few requests for another day-in-the-life. This time with a 10 month old!
5:30a We woke up to Mazen crying but luckily he went back to sleep! Whew.
6:30a Awake! Matt is the brave one to get up first and brings Mazen in to nurse. Matt showers and M and I play with a magazine until he tries to crawl off the bed so we both get up.
7a New diaper and then kitchen playtime while we make breakfast. M plays in his bottom drawer of sippy cups and snacks while Matt and I cook and assemble. Matt makes eggs while I pour coffee and wash and cut fruit.
M’s beakfast is banana, egg, raspberries, blueberries. He eats about 60%. We have scrambled eggs, toast, fruit and coffee.
7:30a Prepare to leave for morning workout to walk Matt to work. It’s so hot now that this is the best time to go. Matt cleans kitchen while I get dressed. We both play with M intermittently.
7:45a Depart on walk. We take the long way because it’s a nice morning.
8:15a Arrive at bakery. Say hi to staff.
9a Arrive back home after taking the long way again. Covered 4 miles!
9:15a New diaper followed by stories in M’s room. Little Gorilla is his favorite!
9:40a Nurse. M nearly falls asleep nursing. Morning nap is usually at 9 but he didn’t seemed sleepy (probably from sleeping late) so I extended playtime a little.
9:45a I put him in crib and he cries for a second but once the door is closed he decides to play a bit. He stands up and plays with toys. But in 10 minutes he is asleep.
10a Shower time! No laundry to do today – yay!
10:20a Downstairs for work at the computer. Grab some sparkling water to drink.
I edit a bunch of photos, write Weekend post and simultaneously shop for a few things on Amazon for M – diaper liners and a crib wrap. I answer emails and comments ongoing.
11:30a Expect M to wake up any minute. His naps are usually 1.5 hours in the morning.
12:08p Mazen is up! That was a great nap – over 2 hours. Totally not the norm. I put him back in his crib for a photo and this happens:
Poor guy probably thought he was going down for another nap! A minute later he was happy again in a clean diaper and new outfit.
12:15p Then we head into the kitchen to make lunch. M gets a cracker to munch while I prep things.
12:26p Lunch!
Leftover quiche, peas, cheese, and broccoli for M.
Leftover quiche, peppers and hummus and a peach for me. Plus M’s quiche crust! Lucky me!
1p I clean up the kitchen (wash M’s tray, wipe counters and table, pick up crumbs, put dishes in dish washer. Luckily no cutting boards, frying pans or blenders were dirtied during this lunch!) I take a moment to also wipe down our porch door which is covered in fingerprints.
1:15p We head down to the basement for some playing and TV time for mama.
2p Back upstairs for a diaper change. Pee yew.
2:10p Decide to make lentils in the rice cooker for M to have for finger foods. He is playing with books in his room so I slip away.
The cookie jar winks at me from the background. I resist.
2:15p Head back downstairs and nurse on the couch. 2pm is usually naptime but this morning’s strange long nap is throwing us off. There are so many things about motherhood that you just have to make a call based on your gut: “Do I put him down or not?” “Do I try to feed him or not?” “Is he going to like this or not?” You just have to guess! I decided to keep him up a bit longer so we play a bit more downstairs. I hope a game of chase will tire him out!
2:30p Sense nap is coming, so we head back upstairs. M is getting a bit fussy
But still has energy!
He picks out a few books and we read. I spot a yawn so I know it’s time!
He tries to hide
2:50p I decide to give him the book in his crib. I give him kisses, darken the room and slip out. He actually reads it for a little bit!
3p Check mail again. Still not here. I spent all day excited for it! I decide I’m ready for a snack and in the mood for a smoothie. Since I didn’t have salad at lunch, I hop out to the garden and pick a bouquet of kale to throw in.
Slurp! Kale + milk + berries + banana
~3:15p All is quiet from the monitor! Work time for me. Back to the computer. More post writing, including this one!
4:00p Movement on the monitor. Hold my breath that it’s just a sleep cycle change. Remember that I need to pump up my bike tires or I can’t bike to dinner tonight.
4:15p Got caught up in emails – go to do bike tires now!
4:26p Never got upstairs – he is awake!
That is one happy napper.
4:30p I put on a clean diaper and we head out to the kitchen. The mail is here!! Nothing good though. I put the lentils away and give M some banana for a snack.
5:15p Dada is home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
5:25p I nurse one more time before I head out the door.
5:40p It’s pouring down rain so I have to drive to my dinner : ( Lucky though since I never pumped up my tires.
I was invited to Two Guys Tacos for a complimentary dinner to try out their offerings. I meet my friend Hillary and we enjoy a sampling of tacos and chips.
The bean and cheese empanada was outstanding!!
We shared fish tacos and a sampling of meat ones. We eat an apple churro for dessert.
Hillary and I stroll around UVA for a bit before I head home to the boys. {Another mile under my belt!} The weather has improved tremendously!
7:30p M is all clean and snuggly and ready for bed. {Karen was over and cooked a delicious looking mahi mahi dish with Matt}.
7:40p Final nursing session and bedtime for the wee one
8p After checking some emails and comments, Matt and I grab a couple of sparkling waters and watch our nightly episode of Mad Men. Only about 5 to go until we’re all caught up on Netflix! What ever will we do!?
Most nights we also watch a few M videos from the day or laugh at his funny sleep positions on the monitor : )
9p I decide to peek at The Bachelorette and get caught watching that. If I don’t get to bed soon I’ll cut into my 8 hours! Matt is listening to some live Beer Network brew cast thing.
10:15p Finally drag myself upstairs and fall asleep before my head hits the pillow.
Anele @ Success Along the Weigh says
Now after reading that, I need a nap! I will also begin my apple churro obsession.
Christine@ Apple of My Eye says
I loved this! Mazen is just the cutest little boy who has the biggest personality! Love his chubby smile and overall happiness!
You guys are a beautiful family :)!
Ashlee@HisnHers says
It’s so awesome that you are able to stay at home with Mazen! He’s such a cutie.
Hoping when I have kids I will turn into a morning person haha
Megan says
A little warning…once, when putting my oldest down for a nap when he was a year old or so, I gave him a few little board books to look at in his crib. He woke from his nap 2 hours later screaming and crying. When I ran in to get him, I discovered that he had chewed the books to pieces and had a wad of paper stuck to the roof of his mouth!! I had to fish it out with my fingers, and needless to say, NEVER put him or any of my other children to bed with a board book again.
KathEats says
Yikes! I watch M on the monitor, but I’ll keep this in mind
Mom says
Kath’s sister Laura spend hours shredding one, once. A library book too!
Tiffany says
Thanks so much for sharing Megan!
Sam says
My little guy has torn a few up but fortunately there was never a swallowing issue.
Kim says
Thank you for this post kath! I love these 🙂 mazen is just too cute and handsome 🙂 I have two questions that I hope you don’t mind me asking! When do you do your cleaning (vacuuming, dusting, bathroom cleaning etc ) and do you hand wash dishes or use your dishwasher mostly with so much more plates, spoons, etc with mazen? Thanks for your great blog and time 🙂
KathEats says
I chip at little things all week long – vacuum with my little Elextrolux cordless maybe every other day and do weekly chores like wiping down sinks often on Sunday mornings. I was on my hands and knees this past Sunday cleaning the baseboards in our basement! I have someone come monthly to deep clean, which has been a huge help since having a baby.
I put everything but cookware/cutting board type things in the dishwasher
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Looks like a great day! Yay for good naps!
Suzanne says
Busy day!! Mazen is SUCH a cutie-patootie; and boy can he eat by the looks of it!
Liz @ The Shrinking Owl says
Wow, you are so busy! I can’t believe you get so much done with a baby, a business to run, and a blog! You’re such an inspiration to women everywhere.
Melissa says
Sounds like a full and exciting day! Thanks for the recap!
Mandy @ The Running Herbivore says
What a lovely life you’ve created for yourself! 🙂
Now I want tacos.
And a cute little baby.
Okay I’ll wait on the cute little baby!
Julie @ RDelicious Kitchen says
i love how you are able to show others than even on busy days, you can still eat healthy!
Ps. What software do you use for writing your blog posts?
KathEats says
Windows Live Writer : )
Laurie says
DARLING post!!! You are going to LOVE looking at these in years to come! 🙂 Thanks for sharing!
Grace says
I work full time and have a toddler, and although I love my job, seeing posts like this make me want to stay at home – your days seem so relaxed, laid-back, and easy! What a fantastic napper and sleeper Mazen is, you are very, very lucky!
I wish I could afford a house cleaner like you, but it’s not in our budget. I’ll often find myself cleaning the bathtub at 10 pm before I go bed, because it’s the only chance I get to clean! Mazen is such a cute little guy, and seems like such an easy baby! Honestly, I’m amazed that he’ll sit and calmly play while you prep for meals and clean. My daughter is super active and wants to be involved in everything I do. I’ve had to be very creative in how I work in the kitchen, clean, etc. in a way where I can include her in what I do. I love these “day-in-the-life” posts, keep ’em coming! 🙂
Sam says
Grace, my little guy is the same way! Into everything we do and has never sat still from pretty much day 1. I hear ya on meal prep and cleaning being close to impossible. But I love reading about days-in-the-life-of families with all kinds of babies! 🙂
Liz says
Loooooved this post! Thanks to share. Please do more of these at least once a month 🙂 I know they might be lot of work. But they are so fun to read. Plus a tons of ideas on everything! Thanks to share again!!
Rachel says
oh my goodness the pictures of M coming at you made my day. It made me laugh out loud 🙂
Lauren @ The Highlands Life says
I love people’s day in the life posts and am about to do one myself about life with a 9 month old.
My guy has those blocks too. He loves to chew on them and loves when we squeeze them to puff air out.
Amanda says
When you are finished with Mad Men, I’d recommend Homeland! Have you watched that at all? My husband and I started watching at the beginning of the summer as most of our “regular” shows aren’t on now and we’re hooked! It’s only 2 seasons in, so it’s easy to catch up!
KathEats says
everyone has recommended Homeland to me but it just doesn’t sound like something I would like. but I feel like since everyone loves it I probably should give it a try!
Bill Randall says
Homeland is a cross between The West Wing and Zero Dark Thirty. It is very good, but maybe too dark and rough for your tastes.
Sara says
I highly, highly recommend Scandal. Season 1 is on Netflix for sure, but a couple months ago I had to buy Season 2 on Amazon Prime to stream (not sure if Season 2 is available on Netflix for free yet or not). I was absolutely obsessed after the first episode! It’s so, so good. I am about 2/3 of the way through Season 2 (there’s only been two season so far). Try it out and I guarantee you guys will be hooked after the first episode!
Caitlin says
A few thoughts from this…
-Super jealous of your garden, we swear we’ll make one happen every year and fail.
-The sequence of photos of M crawling towards you before nap time is awesome and hilarious.
-As a wedding gift we got a Zojirushi rice cooker (life changer!) and I’ve been feeling things out and while it seems like you can’t really screw much up (have only made oatmeal and brown rice)- how do you cook your lentils?
KathEats says
I did two to one water to Lentils and used The mixed setting
Tiffany says
Thanks for sharing, Kath! Do the lentils come out mushy or perfect with a bite? Is there a set time that you wait until you know its ready? Thank you so much!
I once did quinoa and lentils, per Emily’s instructions, and the quinoa turned into mush while the lentils weren’t done yet 🙁
I absolutely love the pictures and day in the life post. Is Mazen walking yet? Can you believe its been 10 months! It feels like yesterday you told us you were pregnant!
KathEats says
Yes, they came out eating friendly – not mush.
Julie says
Wonderful post! Mazen continues to be more adorable every day!
Jennifer says
Can you please clarify what this means:
Breakfast is banana, egg, raspberries, blueberries. Eats about 60%. We have scrambled eggs, toast, fruit and coffee.
Did you eat 60% of your “first” breakfast, then have another (maybe after Mazen was playing or nursing?). Thanks!
KathEats says
Sorry – something messed up in the post (I think a photo is missing too!?) I fixed the text. I was trying to say that Mazen ate 60% of his
Bill Randall says
How were the salsa at that taco place? Not too spicy, I hope! LOL!
Carolyn says
First off, Mazen is just too cute!! You’re one lucky mama!
I had to laugh about you being so excited to get the mail! I used to be like that when I was little. I’m sure I drove my mom crazy asking when the mail was coming! lol These days now that the mail is mostly bills I’m not as excited. lol
Love reading these day in the life posts!
Lindsey says
I started Mad Men this summer and I have become so obsessed! I don’t know what I will do when I have to wait a week for the next episode once I’m caught up. Loved this post by the way! Your family is so sweet:)
Kim says
When did you start mazen with Cheerios?
KathEats says
About 7 months?
Julianne @ LifeOffLeash says
What a fun recap! Who knew reading about someone else’s life would be so entertaining? Little M is just so stinkin’ cute. You should get him into modeling 🙂
char eats greens says
I love seeing this and seeing how other mom’s days go!!! I totally want to do this one day. I love the pic of him crying when you set him back in his crib. My girl would totally do the same thing – “mom, I just woke up from a nap, why are you putting me back in?!”
lorin says
I just finished the Mad Men on Netflix last night! I read that they don’t release a new season until the new season comes on t.v. I don’t know what to do with my life now…ha.
Karen says
This was super fun – and interesting – to read. I see so much of each of your parents in Maze’s darling face these days – there’s one shot in which his expression and his eyes look exactly like your dad’s. I love the crawling sequence shots and the first pic…what a doll!
Alison says
I love these kinds of posts and always marvel at the work of mothers! Mazen gets cuter every day!
Kim says
Whew, what a busy day! Thanks goodness for naps! I love the close up picture of Mazen after his ~3:00PM nap… such rosy cheeks!
Nicole says
I love these. So fun to see what other moms days go like.

anne says
What a cutie pie! Great post.

I absolutely love these posts especially because I am a new mommy. Thank you so much fr sharing Kath 🙂 I wanted to ask you how you work activities such as pool, mom playgroups, walks and errands such as grocery shopping around Mazens nap schedule? Do you work around his naps? Do you ever miss out on activities due to his naps. I am really struggling with this right now and would love to hear your thoughts!
KathEats says
He naps at 9 and 2 so we just do our activities between naps. sometimes we do have to miss out. I have to miss my pump class these days because it interferes With nap time. 🙁
robin says
Good post to read tonight, my daughters in labor keeps my mind busy. Soon we all will have alittle boy to hold:)
KathEats says
Awwww best of luck!
Maureen says
I am absolutely drained after reading this! You are one busy Mama! 🙂
Charlotte says
I seriously love your life Kath. So wholesome, filled with joy, and balanced. Great role model as always. Too many healthy living bloggers seem so disordered but appear perfect online…you seem to be completely real. I hope others follow in your path as I try to on my own as well.
Maria Tadic says
I totally didn’t think you could do lentils in a rice cooker. That’s such a smart idea! Do you follow the usual water to lentils ratio and timing? Can you do regular pre-soaked beans in there too?! That’s be so convenient!
KathEats says
You can but the beans often boil over!
J @ semplicemente ... J says
Simply loved this post!!!!
Tami @Nutmeg Notebook says
This brings back memories of when my children were little! Enjoy every moment as it passes far too quickly.

I just loved reading your “day in the life” post! Mazen is absolutely adorable. I miss those days when my boys were babies 🙂 As always, your food pictures are exquisite. You are a very talented photographer!!
kai says
haven’t seen chia seeds in awhile on your blog, did you stop buying them?
KathEats says
Nope just out for the moment
Kathy W. says
I love these posts!! make them a monthly thing, plz kay thx?
Allie says
What crib wrap did you end up getting? Do you like it? I’m now in the market for one since we have a little beaver on our hands 🙂
KathEats says
This one for the long sides and this one for the short (because our crib has solid sides). I like them both. I like that I can put the tie one in the wash. The gummi ones are newish, but so far so good.
Lindsay says
This was such a lovely look into your every-day, thank you so much for that! You also have me VERY motivated for my Monday: it’s time for me to get cracking on some things around here!
MElissa says
Kath- I would love to know how you clean your floors. They look so clean in the pictures (& I’m sure you keep them that way for Mazen) & we have a lot of trouble with this in my home, especially the kitchen. What do you use/how often/etc? Thanks!
KathEats says
I have yet to come to a really good solution for this. I’m down on the steam mop. It works, but it’s just a bit too much to do regularly. I use my cordless Elextrolux vacuum almost daily and bought a little microfiber refillable mop at BB&Beyond and have been using the Method Wood Floor Cleaner with that. It’s doing well so far. Really getting down on my hands and knees is what really gets the floors their cleanest. Luckily (unluckily!?) I get to do that daily after Mazen’s meals
