My lunch finally escaped my camera!
And look who escaped their car to pay us a surprise visit!!! I knew there was a chance they’d stop by the bakery on their way home from their hike trip, but I had totally forgot until I saw my dad step out of the car. What a pleasant surprise! I only wish they could have stayed for dinner.
Afternoon snack was a Kombucha that Matt brought me to the bakery one day when he spontaneously stopped into Whole Foods. What a sweetheart.
Something else I’ve been meaning to share with you all:
KERF reader Lisa makes these gorgeous notepads by hand with adorable foodie designs on the front. Each notebook is hand-stamped with custom-made foodie stamps and the papers are 100% recycled! I absolutely love these and use them at the bakery everyday:
You can purchase them at Lisa’s Esty Store or buy a Heirloom + Local bundle through OpenSky.
After a hard day’s work (Matt took the day off!) I arrived home on my bike to our weekly family slider feast. Wouldn’t be summer without burgers, and we’ve decided to maximize or time with them! Karen and Matt had got a great start on them!
The three of us are really loving sliders for dinner! The little buns from GH are the perfect size for a 2-3 ounce burger.
The meat tonight was a sample from Organic Prairie by Organic Valley. I spoke a bit about this new humane brand in this post. The meat was neatly vacuum packed for easy freezing and thawing – thumbs up for convenience. I could go years without eating chicken or turkey or pork and be fine, but I really do love the taste of beef. I crave it sometimes. I wonder if it has anything to do with the iron or nutrients in red meat?
Our sliders were topped with K+M (hey – Kath + Matt!!), tomato, pickle, basil. It was outstanding!
Apparently this fly thought so too. GET OFF MY DINNER!
On the side: corn + zucchini
And a tomato, cucumber and goat feta salad tossed with balsamic and olive oil
After dinner I cut into this bad boy:
Wouldn’t be summer without it..
Going to catch the first half of SYTYCD.
Wouldn’t be summer without it!
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
Loving all the summer food! Going now to browse through notebooks 🙂
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
What an awesome surprise. It is fun when you forget those great things (like a surprise from the rents..and then they just “show up”
And Matt is too sweet for surprising you with Kombucha. That stuff is addicting!
Kelsey says
Bye Bye Mr. Fly! I crave pork!! and lamb…. but never ever beef!!
Lexi @ A Spoonful of Sunshine says
You’re right–I can’t imagine a summer cookout without burgers, corn on the cob, and watermelon! Such good memories, both had and to come 🙂

aww that notepad is so simple but such a cute idea!
Brenda says
Oh Kath, your dinner looks delish as always! Glad your mom and dad were able to stop by on their way home. I hope they are able to pick the bears up from their exclusive camp when they get home :). I am super excited because Mr. UPS finally brought my package from OpenSky! I am enjoying C’ville Clusters as I type! I recall a post about the labels being rubbed off because of the heat but I didn’t pay to much attention as our weather has been unseasonably cool. Is there somewhere I could look for the directions on how to cook both the oatmeal and pancake mixes?
KathEats says
Yep – the labels are in this post!

and i completely agree about craving beef. i hadn’t had any in at least a month, and this weekend i just HAD to have a burger two nights in a row!
Lisa @ Sunny Seed Stories says
That’s funny–I am not a huge meat eater either (nothing against it, it’s just not my favorite), but I do love a good burger. Must be the nutrients… Yours look delicious as always, btw.
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
SO glad I got to see your parents as I was flying out the door! It wouldn’t be a B+C visit without breadboard sampling 🙂
KathEats says
I don’t think B had any sweets!!
Eileen says
I think the iron in beef makes people crave it. I was a vegetarian for a year and a half (mostly just an experiment) but when I got pregnant, I craved red meat, and I was sure my body was seeking more iron. I also crave it more when I’m running higher mileage.
Jilliam says
The same thing happened to me when I was pregnant. Also after being vegetarian/vegan for 7 years- I never ate much steak before that, but suddenly it was all I wanted to eat for a lonnnng time! I was really bothered by it at the time, but I eventually listened to my body.
Baking N Books says
What are the benefits of Kombucha? Is there sugar in it by chance?
Eek – flies! Gross! I would have freaked – but you were able to take a photo?!
KathEats says
It landed AS I was taking the photo – otherwise it would not have been allowed to stay!
Baking N Books says
LOL! Well – at least the camera “caught” it before you bit into it! 🙂
Tammy @ Palm Trees and Manatees says
What do you find is the best way to marinate veggies for grilling/the grill pan? Loving all your grilled veggies lately!
KathEats says
I don’t marinate them – just slather in some EVOO and salt/pepa
Tammy @ Palm Trees and Manatees says
Thanks! Easy — just how I like it!
Courtney @ The Granola Chronicles says

Becki @ Becki's Whole Life says
I am loving all of the fresh produce – isn’t summer the best?? The sliders look great. We crave burgers here too. When my husband and I had a meatless week a few weeks back the one time he almost cracked, he IM’d me and said “I want a hamburger so bad!!!!” Could have cared less about any other meat – he wanted a burger! I wonder if you are right about the iron. Interesting!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
What a nice surprise from the parents! I still haven’t bought a watermelon this summer, need to fix that asap!

The grilled zucchini looks super yum! I’ve never had that before. Now I must!*
CheezyK says
Mmmmm, those burgers look fantastic. I’ve cooked burgers up a few times lately just to give me that summer feeling in the middle of our cold, wet winter. Didn’t really work last time – I had to do them in the fry pan as it was too cold out to fire up the BBQ! Not the same at all … 🙁
Love the fact that you stopped to take a pic of the fly instead of swatting it straight off! The things you lovely food bloggers do for our entertainment 🙂
KathEats says
I didn’t allow him to rest there – he plopped down JUST as I snapped my shutter!
CheezyK says
Ah, so awesome timing rather than super dedication – either way, pretty cool.

Aren’t burgers the greatest? I just had a bison burger and it was fantastic!!!
Maryea @ Happy Healthy Mama says

Allispin says
“I could go years without eating chicken or turkey or pork and be fine, but I really do love the taste of beef. I crave it sometimes.”
I crave it ALL THE TIME. I’ve been eating pseudo-vegetarian for the past… 4 years or so but I have eaten meat here and there. I’m not a big fan of seafood in general and I have NO taste for pork (and barely crave chicken or turkey at all), but lately my boyfriend and I have been buying ground beef from a local co-op. The meat comes for a farm about 5 miles away and is so delicious. Beef is the one meat I still crave.
new to your blog, keep up the good work 🙂
KathEats says
Welcome!!
Shayla @ The Good Life says
That dinner screams summer!! It looks absolutely delicious! And I definitely crave beef over any other meat…I think it definitely comes from needing that iron…and I have to say I especially crave it when its that time of the month!
Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance says
Awesome that your parents came by as a surprise 🙂
Haha you caught a fly on your burger?! Be careful! They carry little germies in their feet!
Olena (The Fit Gourmet) says
All this time I was wondering what this kombucha stuff was all about and why it’s worth the fuss and a trip to WF. Just goodgled it and OMG – it’s the “mushroom tea” juice!!! We used to have this Asian mushroom living in a gallon of weak tea at our home in Ukraine when I was a little girl. It was very en vogue then, to have this mushroom as a pet. People would pass the offshoots (or whatever they’re called in shroom-land) to their friends, and there was free kombucha in the house 24/7. Imagine. We used to make it ourselves and I never even suspected it would become cool in North America one day. Wonder if there’s a way to buy this mushroom anywhere here?
Ella says
this is such an intriguing story! Did the mushroom somehow ferment the tea, like Kombucha?
KathEats says
It’s all the same with kombucha – it’s called a scobi! I need Faith, Averie or Allie to step in with all the details, but there’s some definite mushroom sharing going on
Olena (The Fit Gourmet) says
Basically, the mushroom lives in the solution of weak black tea and ferments it into what’s called kombucha here. One every coupla days, you siphon off the kombucha and feed the shroom fresh tea solution. Ours lived in a 3-litre glass jar on a wondow sill.
Thanks for this blast from the past, Kath! 😉
Kasey says
Oh my gosh, seriously just laughed out loud in the library when I read GET OFF MY DINNER. haha thanks for making my night, Kath you crack me up!

I’m sure you’ve heard this a million times, but you look so much like your mother!
Casey says
Two reasons I could never become a vegetarian. 1. cheeseburgers 2. bacon.
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I love burgers too, as long as they’re homemade with real ground beef. I can’t stand frozen or fast food burgers!
Lauren says
I thought about you last night when I was watching SYTYCD…Celine Dion!!! That’s twice this season. I also am crushing on Jess too, not sure what it is about him…probably the fact that he is an amazing dancer!
