I’ve been alternating days of walking and weights with some soccer games sprinkled in! While I know there is some risk with a group sport, I think the risk is low because it’s mostly spread out and 100% outdoors. I am ok with all activities outside, from outdoor dining to social distanced gatherings (like a happy hour with people sitting 6′ apart and no contact). I am not ok with indoors of any kind. I have no idea how we will all keep sane this winter!
Until then – sunscreen!
The gym is on pause
For the short term, we have paused our gym membership. This makes me super sad, of course, but I know we won’t be doing any indoor classes for a while. I really would love to add some cycle classes as a non-weight bearing option for my bad foot, but not for now. And I admit the thought of a Peloton bike has crossed my mind! But I don’t think we’d get our money’s worth once the gym opens up. If I knew I wouldn’t be back for YEARS I would totally invest in one (and a full weight collection!) I do love the social aspect of the gym, so once I feel comfortable going back, I’d choose meeting friends at a cycle class any day over cycling at home. I should probably just ride my bike outside and SWIM more!
I’ve also gone to a few of Matt and Katie’s bootcamp classes which are held in an open-air warehouse space.
My every-other-day weight routine is paying off!
Game face ON:
I found a 35 pound kettlebell at Play It Again Sports, and I have my 15 pound weights for upper body stuff. I really could use a set of 10s for smaller muscles and a set of 20s too, but I’m trying to make do with what I have on hand. (Kicking myself for giving away 2 sets of weights when I moved!) I have a resistance band from some foot physical therapy that I can use occasionally for random small muscles.
I’m starting to see some more definition:
Scootins’ A Sport!
This not-even-2-year-old picked up scootering SO quickly!! Thomas holds his back, but he knows how to ride! This is the helmet we bought. The scooter was Mazen’s!

I wondered if you were still doing BodyPump classes before the gyms closed. I remember you doing them years ago and honestly – the name always made me chuckle. But then I tried one in January at my Y and I LOVED it! I started going to BP twice a week and tried some BodyCombat classes, too. When everything closed, I signed up for Les Mills On Demand and bought the SmartBar weight set, found a used club-sized stepper at Play It Again Sports, got a new yoga mat (cork – so fancy!), and picked up some resistance bands, too. Now I have a perfect home gym and hundred of workouts available. I couldn’t stick with home workouts in the past, but now that the gym is at home, I don’t have any excuse. Plus, with school at home and a new job starting at the end of August, I don’t want to try to fit going to the gym into my schedule…especially if I’m concerned about safety. Les Mills offers a free two-week trial, so you and your readers should check it out if you’re interested! It has truly changed my relationship with fitness and exercise.

I haven’t done an “official” Body Pump class in years. The ones that I did at my gym prior to shut down were a spin off class that had morphed away from official pump years ago. Sounds like you have a great set up in your home! It’s true, once you have the equipment, not having to drive anywhere is so convenient!

I so agree about outdoor activities feeling safer. I wonder, though, how you managed your girls weekend at the lake? Did you all get tested beforehand? I miss my friends SO MUCH, but I’m worried about gatherings because that seems to be where infections are being spread.
Kath Younger says
We didn’t get tested but we were “extra careful” the week before we went. I agree about social gatherings and I’m not going to any parties or getting within 6′ of friends on a daily or even regular basis. We took a risk for a one-time weekend, and I’m ok with that level of risk because the number of people was small (3), and no one was doing anything that involved crowds/indoors/travel the week before. That said, it was “riskier” than staying home.

You might want to get that Pelaton. A safe vaccine is realistically not likely for a year or so, and even then the first available vaccines likely won’t be”sterile” …meaning it just reduces symptoms, but doesn’t prevent contracting the illness. If that concerns you, you may want to plan for home workouts for a whiel.

Check out the Schwinn IC4. It’s compatible with the peleton and zwift software. It’s something we’re thinking about for when we can’t get OUT on the trails

I was going to suggest the same. There are many options for bikes that are far cheaper than a Peloton. I’m thinking of getting an IC4 also. I have been using the Peloton app for a year or so, and love it!
Also had to laugh, I just got the Joovy helmet for my daughter, and recognized it right away. It’s so much better than what they sell in the local stores for kids helments.

Get the Peleton. You won’t regret it.
