Some mornings I wake up with so much energy. Others I’m quite slow. I think I got too much sleep last night! I got in bed to read at 9 and was doing the whole “eyes drowsy and jumping back awake” thing by 9:38 when I finally turned off the light. Even waking up to my alarm at 6:26 I still feel like that was too much!
Perhaps I should have set it for 5:26!?
Nevertheless, I had a wintertime breakfast today. Not sure why I was in the mood for a big bowl of muffiny oats – and even hot coffee! My wintertime staples. But I actually had pre-brewed cold coffee that I brought home from Great Harvest – half caf, half decaf, already brewed and mixed! So cold coffee it was.
Also, no sweating in this to-go coffee cup that was once an OpenSky promo!
My oats were a wonderful blend of Scottish oats, milk, banana, chia seeds, cottage cheese, blueberries, Red, White & Blueberry muffin, and sunflower butter drizzle
Really couldn’t ask for a more perfect breakfast! Filling too!
My mom brought me this linen at our 4th party. It smells just like my grandmother! (It was hers)
If you like chewy clusters of raw things, you’ll want to check here!!
Have a lovely day!
Mrs. Fish says
I’ve been craving hot oatmeal too lately! Hot oats are just so delicious and comforting!
kaila @ healthy helper! says
Mmmmm muffiny oats sound so good right now! I was a little chilly waking up so I think I’m going for a hot breakfast too!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
Love the new linen. Isn’t it funny how smells bring you back?
Grace @ Healthy Dreaming says
Your dining ware is always beautiful and lovely! I love the time you take to set the table and make everything pretty. Hope you have a wonderful Hump Day!
Hilliary @ Happily Ever Healthy says
I hade a huge bowl of hot oatmeal this morning! Southern Minnesota was an odd damp cold this morning!
Alexia (Dimple Snatcher) says
I love memory smells. SO SPECIAL.
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
The gooey PB on your wintery oats looks great!!!
I’ve been having trouble with the night time reading. I am reading The Hunger Games.. and I am finding it hard to STOP reading. I end up staying awake way longer then I intended to..and am exhausted when the old alarm goes off!
Melissa @ HerGreenLife says
What are your tips and tricks for actually getting to bed at such a nice early hour? We keep saying we need to get to bed earlier to we get more sleep, but in the end, we’re lucky if lights are out by 11 most nights 🙁
We made some red, white, and blueberry coffeecake on Saturday morning — delicious!
KathEats says
I don’t think there are really any tips involved – just turn off the TV, computer, DVR and get in bed! If you’re still doing chores and stuff at 11pm, then I don’t think I could really recommend anything without a look at your entire weekly schedule
Khushboo says
Same thing happens to me when I sleep TOO much- I feel so lethargic…fortunately that’s nothing a little exercise can’t fix 🙂
lynn @ the actor's diet says
i’ve been up since 5am b/c i’m going on a road trip! unfortunately the driver is still asleep.
Julie H. says
I love hot oats, all year long! It’s not just a winter thing for for this girl! Looks good, Kath…… And NO to the alarm clock question. 5:26? No good!
Katie says
Kath, I’m really getting into The House at Riverton. I was up at 4:30 and was able to read up to 189. Early morning seems to be a lot easier for me to focus than trying to stay awake at night lately. I need to read Bankers quickly before the kids get up and I my “work” day officially begins. I love old linens and the smells that linger with them. Last night I read an old book of mine with my daughter that we had found in the garage, but it smelled a little too dusty and musty! Have a wonderful day!
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
I used to love hot coffee + cigarettes in the summer but I cut those out a few years ago. But I still love the coffee!
Cait's Plate says
Oh man those Younger Bars look AWESOME. What’s the texture like – are they similar to a Probar?
I’m loving your bowl of oats…I’ve been craving a big bowl of muffin-y oats lately too but haven’t been able to bring myself to do with this heat. Hopefully a rainy morning will come around soon so I can dig in.
I adore that linen your mom gave you – it’s an extra bonus that it smells like your grandmother 🙂 My grandmother has such a distinct, comforting smell. As soon as I walk into her house it just hits me and I feel so happy.
KathEats says
I forgot about Probars! Love those. Yes, the texture is similar!
Brittany (A Healthy Slice of Life) says
MMM hot oatmeal always sounds so much better to me than cold, overnight oats!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Looks tasty! And that cup is super cute… I love all things bright and colourful!
Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey says
My memories are so often tied to smells… I love that.
I envy your excess of sleep! I’m lucky to get 5.5 hrs during the week.

Aine @ Something to Chew Over says
I had hot oats this morning too – temporarily made me a little sweaty but was worth it 🙂
I had this:

Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing says
Sometimes I wake up in the peak of summer and crave a “winter” breakfast complete with hot coffee, too. And then I realize it’s already 80* outside, and have to talk myself through the logic of this idea when one lives in an un-air conditioned apartment…ha! 😉 Usually my brain wins, but every now and again I’ll sweat through my steaming cup of joe!
Freya (Brit Chick Runs) says
I seriously wanted nothing more than hot, puffy oats after my long run this morning..so it kinda sucked to come in to overnight millet flakes, cos I can’t eat oats anymore! Boo 🙁
Amanda says
I LOVE LOVE LOVE THAT CUP! where did you get it?
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I was given a bunch of my great grandmother’s linens when we first got married and they smelled just like her too. Spending the past 5 years in my china cabinet though they’ve lost the smell, but are still beautiful 🙂
Hillary says
Oh, heavens. That muffin looks too good to be true.
Angela says
Hey Kath-
I used to bike to work every day when I worked at GH because I could easily transition to my shorts/tshirt/headband look. I now work in a more professional setting and am going to start biking to work again. Luckily, it is a block from GH and I can take the same 3 mile bike path. Not far at all, but far enough to break a sweat! Any suggestions or tricks on how to go from bike-to-office?
KathEats says
Jealous you have a bike path!
I’m not a good person to ask because I just arrive to work all sweaty and wet. Sometimes I go stand in the walk-in cooler to cool down a bit. You could definitely bring some wet clothes to wipe off and a change of clothes if you get too too hot. But I just cool off slowly!
Angela says
oops not a literal bike path…I should have said “route”!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Looks a perfect way to start the day…breakfast looks amazing! I hope you have a great day too Kath!
Cindy says
I love oats every day! What is your favorite sunflower butter? The only brand i can find without added oil is Maranatha so that is the only one I have tried.
KathEats says
Trader Joe’s!!!!!!! Best ever.
Sarah says
i always notice a difference if I get too much sleep. I drag all day long. Strange how that works isn’t it? Muffiny oats look yumm!
Vicki says
I thought the last link was going to be something interesting instead of an open sky plug :/
KathEats says
Not a “plug” but a unique raw granola 25% off. Sorry if that is not exciting to you!
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
Occasionally I’ll crave hot oatmeal in the summer. I tend to get overheated if I eat it, though, so I usually stick to either overnight or cereal.
Margo @ peanut butter trees says
The red, white, and blueberry muffin makes the bowl of oats so pretty! Looks delicious.
Ashley says
That definitely looks like a wintery bowl, but with iced coffee it’s perfecto!
Katie @ Faith & Funfetti says
I had oats this morning too. I rarely eat oatmeal in the summer, but woke up craving it and wouldn’t settle for anything else. Definitely a staple in my house during the cooler months, but it hit the spot this morning as well! 🙂
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
MMM, looks good. I have not been in the mood for anything other than smoothies though, sorry! hah. But glad it hit the spot for ya!
Foodie says
I love filling breakfasts. Back when I used to have white-flour muffins or pastries, I would become hungry 2 hours after breakfast! It was ridiculous.
Flourchild says
Your breakfast looks great! I love the comment about the Linen smelling like your Grandma..When ever I smell lemon I think of my Grandma. She had a lemon tree outside her kitchen window and she just seemed to smell like fresh lemon all the time!
Angel7 says
I like the coffee cup, and the linen is so pretty!

Maria @ Beautiful Busy Bee says
Wow you’re an early bird!!!! I go to bed no earlier than 10:45. If I’m running I’ll get up at 7:30, if I’m running before work I’ll get up at 6:20 (which is torture for me) and if I’m not running I’ll get up at 8 or 9. 🙂
Hayley @ Oat Couture says
Those oats look like exactly what I am craving! 🙂 I know what you mean about sleep I have been getting too much recently and it’s really messing with my system! Hate waking up with alarms though, I need a better body clock! 🙂
Marie Rizzo says
Just wondering how much cottage cheese you put in the oatmeal. That is one ingrediant I can never figure out the correct amount. Would it be a third cup to take the place of the mile? I love your blog, even if I am in my middle forties. 🙂 It has helped me balance out my life and eating. Thank you for being committed to blogging.
Marie Rizzo says
Sorry meant to type milk and it came out mile. 🙂
KathEats says
Glad you love KERF!!
I usually do 2 heaping spoonfuls – so maybe 1/4 to 1/3 a cup?
emily says
I have a fresh jar of Biscoff, I’d love to trade you for a bag of GH granola! 🙂
Namaste Gurl says
I eat oats no matter what time of year it is 🙂 Hehe.
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
Yeah, sleeping too long makes me very groggy; usually the less I sleep, the more energy I have.
Love the muffin oats! I have muffins downstairs… so tempting. 🙂
Jackie @ That Deep Breath says
That bowl of oats looks delicious! I can’t wait to make a big bowl when I get home from vacation. I can eat oats no matter what time of year…or weather!
Kristin @ eat healthy. be happy. live well says
The oats look great! I always eat my oats hot. I’ve tried the cold overnight oats, but just can’t do it!!
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
Warm muffiny oats sounds soooo good right now!
Kara says
For some reason I was in the mood for a big bowl of hot oats this morning, too. And I followed your lead from way back when and added an egg to the oats — O’m’gosh! They were fluffy, creamy deliciousness.
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
cute mug and glad that it’s a non-sweater 🙂 I hate condensation dripping all over me from my iced coffees.
I use reusable mugs, i.e. my starbucks one, for my iced coffee and it works well. Your open sky one is cuter though!
Katie O. says
I hate getting too much sleep! It’s really such a balance. Sometimes too little and sometimes too much but either way it’s no good. 🙂
Tiff @ Love, Sweat, and Beers says
That looks too good for seasonal containment. 🙂 Glad you enjoyed them!
Hope says
That hot oatmeal looks so good! I haven’t had hot oats in such a long time. I should change that. 🙂
I never feel fully rested no matter how much sleep I get. It stinks 🙁
Jess says
I’d defititely say thats a perfect breakfast, its not breakfast now, but its made me want to eat it. haha
Jess.
Meg says
Apparently today is comment day 🙂 I’ve been a reader for a few months, but have yet to comment! Apparently (per Tim Ferris’s book!), often times the sluggish feeling after a long night’s sleep comes from low blood sugar, having not eaten for 10-12 hours! I get cranky if I don’t eat for 2-3 hours 🙂
Brittany @ Itty Bits of Balance says
For some reason I can never do cold coffee in the mornings! There is something about a warm cup that gets me ready for the day 😀
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I’ve been craving hot oatmeal, but it’s been way too hot in the mornings lately! I hope tomorrow is cooler so that I can have some. 😀
anna says
I had a $10 credit to use before the end of the month, and your granola deal is an absolutely perfect thing to spend it towards! Thanks 🙂
I woke up groggy and wanted hot oats this morning too… maybe a groggy body wants a comforting, warm, and nourishing wake-up 🙂 (I wish I’d had a muffin to crumble on them, though!)
Jodie says
Been reading your blog for around 3months now, love the pictures of your food, the bakery etc. I always get blown away by what you put in your oats, eg. muffins & peanut butter? Thats a little strange for me I have to say but I will have to try some time! Its winter here in Australia now, love starting the day with our oats with bananas, berries & chia seeds. I love your blog, it inspires me for my food choices!
