I have a TERRIFIC morning under my belt!! Er, waistband of my running pants!!
Suzanne is a blog reader, runner, triathlete engineer who lives in Arlington and comes to visit her parents and alma mater frequently. We have turned into running buddies! She emailed me to see if I wanted to join her for 8 miles at 8 today. SURE! I said. But could we turn 8 into 7!?
We ended up running 7.6 miles!! I’m ready to start building up my endurance again, and today was the start of that. Another half marathon in the spring perhaps?
Before we left, I had a coconut water and a date. Perfect fuel. My legs are a little sore from Body Pump, but a mile into our run they felt nicely warmed up.
I added an apricot to the middle of our run to see if it gave me a bump. I didn’t really notice a difference (like I do when I drink homemade sport drink) but this sure was easier to pack.
Wheeee!
After our run we hopped on bikes to attend Pancakes for Parkinsons! A free [donation-based] pancake event on the lawn that takes place each fall
I had two pancakes topped with strawberries, frozen blackberries and raspberries, chocolate chips, a squirt of whipped cream, a banana from home, a drizzle of syrup and some clumps from a squeezable Justin’s PB packet. OH, and that’s a Resee’s on top that Matt contributed to my plate! The pancakes were good, but it was so cold that they were cold by the time I ate them. Probably didn’t help that I put some half thawed frozen fruit on top!
Two cups of brown water
I am scared of mascots
After pancakes we were enjoying the morning so much we went for a walk (I think in total we covered 8.6 miles on foot!)
Downtown for some beverages
No, not that stuff
I got a tall misto with 1 pump pumpkin from Sbux
We biked to and from grounds as well. I have word there is a chocolate festival happening this morning and the farmer’s market, but after covering about 11 miles in total, my legs would prefer some foaming and a hot shower! We had SO much fun this morning.
Suzanne brought me some birthday cookies!! Is it lunchtime yet!?
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
Looks like such a fun morning!! I love the Reese’s on your pancake too…such a good idea 🙂 Hope you enjoy the rest of this beautiful day!

I went for a 90 minute run this morning and promptly arrived home to make kodiak cakes.
an hour later, my neighbor came over with a couple on a plate for me, already maple-syrupped.
Clearly, I run for pancakes too. And everyone knows it. 🙂
Dorry says
What an awesome morning – it really does seem that there are so many fun events in Charlottesville!
Laura says
I have to tell you – I made your pumpkin oatmeal pancakes yesterday and they were fantastic! Thanks!
Reeses on pancakes sounds perfect! I bet it would be good to make pancakes with Reeses in the batter… 😉
Melissa @ HerGreenLife says
What a fun, active fall morning! While I like the spirit of fundraiser pancake breakfasts, the cakes I make at home are SO much better. We had pumpkin pancakes this morning after our farmers’ market bike trip 🙂
Sarah says
Kath, is that the forerunner 305? How do you get the time on it?
Kath says
Yeah. I don’t remember how, but you can customize your homescreen. I read the manual.
Sarah says
Okay, thanks. I’ll pull mine out. 🙂
thetreadmilldiaries says
First – Happy Birthday! Looks like you had a great run, breakfast and day.
I indulged in a few pancakes myself today – covered in banana and tad of honey cinnamon sugar. They were the bomb. 😉 Love starting Saturdays off like that.

wahoowah! kath, i love pretending that i still live in c’ville, vicariously through you and the stories you tell about my alma mater. pancakes for parkinson’s is an AMAZING charity started by a good friend of ours- thank you for spot lighting it on your blog! i hope all of your c’ville readers have a chance to wander over to the lawn to learn more about the incredible event and of course, enjoy some pancakes! thanks for the great stories and photos to bring me back to a cool, crisp fall day on the Lawn. Wish I could make it back more often!
Kath says
🙂 The event was great!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
wow you’re brave to get that close to the mascot – my friend is FRIGHTENED of anything with a costume head. she got married at the Phillies baseball field and freaked out when they even SUGGESTED having the Philly Phanatic at her wedding.
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Looks like fun! I agree, pancakes are so so much better when they’re hot. What a great event – and well done on the run! 🙂

Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
I’m afraid of mascots, too!! Something about not knowing who is inside there freaks me out!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Nice job on the 7.6 miles! Pancakes sound like the best way to refuel after that, even if they were a bit cold. 😀
Chelsea @ Strawberry Sweat says
You are awesomely productive this morning! A run, pancakes, a walk…jeez girl 🙂 Those pancakes do look delicious… maybe I should make pancakes for lunch!
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says

7.6 is a major run! I just ran 8 for the first time and needed to rest after that. And then you kept going! Thanks for being matchmaker too. Lauri and I are going to be Foodbuzz roomies. See you in a few weeks, and happy early KERFday!
Kath says
Oh yay! Glad she found you 🙂

Great run! I only did 5 miles this morning, so you have me beat! So beautiful there! I LOVED Virginia when we visited. We are actually having a pretty cool day here is Dallas, surprisingly enough! I am a sucker for pancakes too. Yours look delicious!
Lee says
You should do the Charlottesville Half marathon. I did it back in 2006 and really enjoyed it. I’m not from there, but my parents live in the DC and we just drove from there.
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
Fun Morning – mascots scare me too. The one that scares me the most even though it’s not really a mascot? The king from Burger King – talk about creepy.
Paige @Running Around Normal says
Ah fun times!!
Umm yes that mascot in particular is very scary! I think they’re scariest when it’s a mascot of a person. A bird notsomuch. A bear? Not afraid. A person…eeeek!!
Alison (Ali on the Run) says
Ahhhh I’m scared of mascots, too! Like totally terrified. So glad to see someone else shares my fear (though you’re brave to have gotten so close to it).
Heather says
looks like a beautiful day! The pancakes look awesome.
too funny about the mascott.
Shannon (A Better Me) says
Don’t feel bad. Santa still scares the crap out of me! I don’t think there’s a single picture of me sitting on his lap when I was younger where I wasn’t screaming! 🙂 Pancakes looked nummy!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Those pancakes sound to DIE!
Madeleine @ Notes On A Page says
I’m scared of mascots, too! You were very brave to get your picture taken, haha! It’s nice to hear I’m not alone… I always get made fun of for it 😛
Mads says
I’m not so much afraid of mascots as I am their smell. P-U! Stinky costumes
What a great fundraiser! Nummy too
Maren says
I agree with you on the mascots, they’re scary and creepy.
Lindsay says
I think that you should train to run the Disney Princess Marathon. I think it would be an amazing race for you to run in and not too far from home. 🙂
Kath says
Not that close to home! I don’t know if I’m up for a marathon…half maybe!
Amy says
I think Disney Princess has a half! Any race that encourages tutu-wearing is tops in my book. 🙂
Amy says
I think Disney Princess has a half! Any race that encourages tutu-wearing is tops in my book. I’d so do it. 🙂
Amy says
Hmm, that posted twice. Bad computer!
I’d still do the Disney Princess Half, AND wear a tutu.
stacey-healthylife says
There are so many fun activities in your area, so jealous.
Olivia says
Kath, you may have mentioned this in a previous post, but how did you start running? Did you do a couch to 5K program or just jump in and slowly add length? Did you start during or after your weight loss? You seem meticulous about things so I’m just curious if there is a particular program/method you would recommend.
Kath says
Luckily I’ve been running my whole life. Not necessarily well or fast, but I started running in middle school (for fun and exercise with my friends – we used to run before school for a bit) and then continuing with 4-5 miles until my foot surgery of 2005. Running <5 miles has always been easy for me, but going above that is a challenge. Couch to 5K seems to be the best out there!
Olivia says
Thanks for the reply!!
Erika @ Food, Fitness, & Fun says
I would totally run for pancakes! SUCH a great idea… 😀
Hannah says
I feel like crying! I miss UVA (I did an exchange year there in 2007) so much! The Lawn and all the orange 🙁
Amy says
I went for a run this morning (I’m here in Cville) and crashed the chocolate festival’s 5k – the Chocolate Chase! I didn’t know about it until we saw them setting up. My friend and I passed their water station and everything, and we thought about pretending to be the first-place finishers, but we declined. 🙂
Also, I thought I’d mention to you that pumpkin was on sale at Kroger earlier this week – you know, just in case you need more. 🙂
Kath says
First off, I ALSO crashed the 5K! We ran near it and I ALSO got water!!
Second, I went all through Kroger at Barrack’s Road on Thursday and couldn’t find pumpkin anywhere!! Luckily I’m all stocked up now from Food Lion. Where did you find it!?
Amy says
The Kroger up 29 near Lowe’s. They had tons of it! You can also try the Lowe’s at 29/Hydraulic.
Evyn says
Holy moly this post made me homesick!! I lived in Charlottesville for 6 years and just recently moved to South Korea. While living in Seoul is great, I do miss good ole Cville from time to time. Anyway, I just started reading your blog and I’m really loving it. Can’t wait to read more! 🙂
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
