Just out for a morning walk like me!
Excuse me sir
Watch your back! Attack of the chickens!
Those guys gave me quite a surprise on my walk this morning : )
I didn’t notice them because I was staring at this beauty:
My walk ended up being 6 miles (I google mapped it when I got home). Holy smokes! It didn’t feel like that long. Just a pleasant stroll! I have plans to walk to Karen’s as soon as I’m done with this post. My legs don’t feel anything like they would if I’d ran that far.
Sights seen:
Once back on my own farm, I showered and whipped up some lunch.
A nice hot mix of microwaved veggies – bok choy on the bottom, then pinto beans, broccoli, red pepper, leftover roasted butternut squash, and pecans.
Mixed up in a dressing made from these:
- The juice of half a lemon
- 1 tsp tahini
- 1/2 tsp garlic gold
- Pinch rosemary salt
Deeelicious!
Dessert
Karen and I are getting pedis this afternoon and going for a countryside drive!
Look out for chickens…
Faith says
First comment!!!! Enjoy your afternoon!

Your salad looks great. Are there other people out and about on your walk? (always worried about safety…)
KathEats says
Yes, lots!!
Amanda (The Nutritionist Reviews) says
Beautiful views! I love seeing nature like that. And what a colorful lunch! Last night I tried some basil olive oil and I thought of you with your flavored vinegars and oils : )
Katy (The Singing Runner) says
Beautiful scenery! 😀 Enjoy your girlie time! 😀
Evan Thomas says
Wow! We have wild turkeys but not chicken. Weird.
Freya (Brit Chick Runs) says
I love walks that you can just get lost into, like your own little world 🙂
Do you think you work as hard walking 6miles as you would running 6miles? Some people say you do, but I’m not sure..surely there’s more spring and bounce involved in running? I’m ALWAYS wondering about this!
KathEats says
Yes! What you lose on intensity you gain in time. Nearly equal.
lindsay says
I love this reply, Kath. I had childhood injuries that prevent me from running now without major pain. I ran through the age of about 20 before I realized the damage I was doing. Today, the majority of my longer workouts are nice long, fast walks involving hills/inclines. Most runners don’t consider walking a workout, so its refreshing to hear someone who is a runner and in great shape, also look at walking as a good workout, too.
And I LOVE the chicken photos! Too funny!
Jess @ atasteofconfidence says

Sounds like a lovely day so far. I find I can walk so much further than I can run – walking feels effortless.

I DEFINITELY thought those chickens were fake!

Awww, I love when chickens walk around. We have them around here, too. I worry they’ll get hit by a car, though!!
Lunch looks great. Love the mix and the dressing. 🙂

You’ve inspired me — I think I shall go for a walk as well!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
I think it’s so great how much you and your MIL hang out…if I saw mine as much as you see yours, I would have to drink A LOT more wine every night. 😀
Beautiful scenery!
Regina says
Where’s the head on that last chicken!?
Mollie says
HA! I thought the same thing at first…let out a little gasp!
sarah (sarah learns) says

Lol, how random is that?! Funny, though 😉 A pedicure is exactly what I need…perhaps an at-home spa day is in order tomorrow 🙂 Have fun tonight with Karen! Loving the scenery
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
Those little friends of yours must have been a big surprise!!! Here, the only surprises you get are pigeons. One actually flew directly in front of my face today!
Camille says
What beautiful sights! And how random to see chickens out there! 🙂
Eileen says
The chicken pictures are great! I’m so impressed by your 6 miles. I lack the patience to walk that much. 🙁
Amy at TheSceneFromMe says
Ha, those chicks were just trying to keep up with you Kath!
Seems like the railroad wouldn’t be such a safe place to walk. But it must be since you seem to do it alot. Do you carry pepper spray?
KathEats says
Oh I wasn’t walking on it – over it on a bridge!
Mom says
I wondered the same thing–how safe that was.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
ha ha those chickens are cute!
Runeatrepeat says
New blog name suggestion for ya: “Kath Eats Real Pretty Food”.Because you have the best photography ever 🙂
KathEats says
🙂 Thanks!

Your pictures are so lovely!
Your blog has a very “vintage ” vibe to it – beautiful!
KathEats says
Thanks!
Sana says
Ackk! those chickens better be careful!

I used to play rugby in college and we had a tournament every year at UVA and we’d play on that field (your second sight picture.) what a blast from the past!
KathEats says
Maybe that’s why it’s called Rugby Road!?
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Your salad (and pics!) = gorgeous. What a lovely day for a walk. 😀
Melissa @ For the Love of Health says
That looks like the perfect lunch!
Justeen @ Blissful Baking says
I really enjoy long walks too! Being outside in the fresh air always puts me in such a good mood!
Emily @ Savory and Savage says
Lol, adorable chickens. The oddest thing I have ever seen on my walks is the flock of wild conures which live in my neighborhood. 🙂
Rachel (Olalliberry) says
I love taking long walks on weekends. You’re right, it is so much less strenuous than running that I can walk for hours without getting tired. And you get more time to enjoy the scenery!
Emily says
Looks like you had a lovely walk! About how long did it take you to walk six miles? Also…your salad looks soo good!
KathEats says
I walk maybe an 18 minute mile when I’m out, so a broken 1.45?
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
Haha, so random! I love the last pic!
Lauren at KeepItSweet says
Your chicken pictures are amazing!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Those chickens are SO random! I don’t think I’ve ever encountered anything other than a squirrel on my walks! 😛
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Sounds like a great afternoon! I’m in desperate need of a pedi. Hope you enjoyed it!
Alyssa says
I love going out with girls to get pedis 🙂 Do that with my mother-in-law whenever I get the chance!
maria @ Chasing the Now says
That last photo cracked me up. Looks like the chicken’s head was cut off!
Emily says
I love that you have chicken sightings on your walks 🙂 I usually only get to see squirrels, maybe the occasional rabbit. The warm salad looks good, I really need to invest in some tahini for dressings and homemade hummus. Whats your fav brand?
KathEats says
Mine is EarthFare brand – brought with us on the move!
Stephanie@Thorns Have Roses says
I LOVE that tahini dressing combo. I’ve been making something similar this week subbing the tahini for sunflower seed butter. Amazing. I have a garlic oil but something tells me the garlic gold would be even tastier. Your walk looks like it was lovely!
Katy @ RecipeCan says
Ah! Why doesn’t the chicken have a head lol?!
Kristina says
LOVE Lemon/Tahini dressing – I just finished making a salad using it (this one in fact: http://www.101cookbooks.com/archives/001493.html)… looks like a great lunch 🙂
Raya says
Omgosh love the chickens. There’s a town near where I’m from in Florida that ALWAYS has chickens in the road-they even have “Will brake for Chickens” bumper stickers!
Hannah says
I really need to start preparing extra veg so I can make beautiful leftover salads like you! (And not just eat chocolate dipped in sunflower butter for lunch)
Kris says
I like your chickens much better than the gator I came across on my walk. He was sunning himself a little too close to the sidewalk. I made a mad dash past him. Not that running would have helped had he chosen me as his next snack. Did you know gators run really fast? Up to 25 mph for smaller gators!
Kris says
Error report — small gators run more 7-10 mph; still faster than me, slowpoke that I am.
KathEats says
OMG – scary!
Lizz @ Leading the Good Life says
1. I love train tracks. LOVE them. Not really sure why, though.
2. I love tahini. LOVE it. Because it tastes awesome. 🙂
3. Not really sure how I feel about chickens. Especially now that they’ve discovered they are related to the T-Rex!
Y says
I hope this comes across as hopeful and not belittling, so here I go… As a med student, I’ve still got lots to learn but from class, docs emphased that endometrial cancer counts amongst the “good cancers” (relatively of course) to get. They tend to present early and have a high survival rate (>95% at 5 years — INSANELY GOOD!) So keep that Karen active, happy, and hopeful. And uber hydrated once radiation starts.
KathEats says
Thanks for your encouragement! That is what her doctors have stressed too – but she has a more aggressive kind of cell, so it’s a bit more concerning of spread. Plus the chemo is an extra layer of stress 🙁
Catarina says
Oh I love to walk and walk and walk around the city… And in more rural places it’s even lovelier (finding chickens is awesome :D).
Your salad looks lovely! How do you microwave the veggies? Really curious since it’s a pain when I get home late and starving to be boiling or steaming my veggies.. Takes forever :$
KathEats says
Just 2.5 minutes in my glass container. Made sure they were a bit moist.
Catarina says
Thanks! 😀
Rachel says
My goodness! I love earth fare, it is nice to see some of their products photographed. I did not realize there were any locations outside of north Carolina.
KathEats says
There aren’t here in VA – I brought it with me on the move!
stacey-healthylife says
That would surprise me about the chickens too.
Allison @ Happy Tales says
You are sooo lucky! I didn’t realize you could walk to Karen’s… I wish my mom/Ryan’s mom lived closer. I’d be walking to visit ’em every single day!
Kelly says
This reminds me of a run I went on when I was visiting San Jose. It was so weird to see a couple of chickens wandering around in a big city. I’m pretty sure someone was in violation of farm animal zoning laws. 🙂
Christin@purplebirdblog says
Hehehe, the east side of town here is also populated with chickens and roosters, in a residential neighborhood not anywhere close to the country! 😀
Joy says
What a gorgeous walk!
