All morning we learned about wheat!! The key to fabulous Great Harvest bread. My background in food science sure prepared me for this experience.
All the Great Harvest’s in the country!
Two hundred TWENTY SIX!!
Midmorning snack of tea and trail mix
And then we headed out for lunch – thankfully the SUN is out!! It has increased from 0 to 2 degrees, I believe!
The [short] walk was fabulous!
Charming Dillon!
We went to Papa T’s – which was hard to describe!
I ordered the Chinese Chicken Salad, which was very good!
With chicken, oranges, pineapple and a pretty good amount of veggies
I also snacked on some of the group table’s chips!
Back to work! Bread tasting on the horizon!
Stacy @ Every Little Thing says
There is a Great Harvest here in St. Louis (at least one, maybe more) and I’ve been to them elsewhere as well. So excited for this new adventure you’re on! Personally, I’d love to learn about wheat haha.
Emma@ cuddlenread.blogspot.com says
I’m so excited for one to come to VA!
Evan Thomas says
Random question for a bakery but does Great Harvest have plan for a gluten-free line of breads?
Christin@purplebirdblog says
How cool would that be?!
Natalia - a side of simple says
Even if it’s just using gluten-free flours (without shutting down the entire facility for days, Kath) I think it would really extend the products to so many people!
Karen says
Right…that would be a huge appeal to those who are gluten-sensitive (and there seems to be an increasing percentage of the population who is/thinks they are) even if it would not provide the guarantee required by those who are truly allergic. It seems to me such an initiative would be a wise and progressive business decision.
Kath says
I guess i should clarify that we’re definitely not against the idea of gluten-free breads, but it is EXTREMELY difficult from a production standpoint to manage (especially when you mill whole wheat flour on site 6 days a week and need 1 day of rest). We won’t be starting with them, but if the market demands it, we will most definitely give it some serious thought.
Amber K says
I think you’re right, it would definitely add some difficulty! It is becoming more prevalent, but you’d have to figure out if you would make enough money to offset your expenses. (I was just diagnosed with celiac as well as my best friend and her two daughters!)
Karen says
Makes good sense!
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
That salad looks great! I love mandarin oranges on salads – they are perfectly sweet. Enjoy tasting the bread – I’m jealous. 🙂
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
Bread tasting… mmmm. That sounds like my kind of work.
Jil @ Big City, Lil Kitchen says

Still no Great Harvest in Arkansas. I hope to try this famous bread one day!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
You can’t go wrong with your work being bread tasting! Looks like you are having a great learning day!
Dorry says
226! That’s fun. We need more red dots in Texas! 🙂
Freya (Brit Chick Runs) says
Hehe, I love how Americans say ‘two hundred twenty six’ as opposed to ‘two hundred AND twenty six’ – makes me smile every time 🙂
Christena says
Interesting. I’m sitting here now saying it both ways….I don’t say the “and” either.
Emily G. says
lol I say it as “two twenty six – and if I shy away from that I saw it as “two hundred twenty six”
I never thought about that!!
Lindsay says
As a teacher, we don’t say the AND because it implies there is a decimal point. Think in terms of money. We say twenty six dollars and seven cents.
Jamie @ Food in Real Life says
Until I saw that map, I had NO idea that there are 2 great harvests in my area!! OH JOY!! Stay warm! 🙂
Lauren at KeepItSweet says
Can I come for the bread tasting? 🙂
Katryn@rampantcuisine says
Looks like a fun day! I’m excited to see a few GH locations in the MD area!
Melissa @ HerGreenLife says
Okay, I’ve been putting off taking a walk all afternoon because it’s gray and cold, but this may be the kick I need to get up and move a little, cold or no (and, no, it’s not anywhere near as cold as zero degrees where I am).
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
That salad looks delicious!!
foodandfarm says
Trust me… its still very cold in va!
Kara says
A salad on a cold day? You are really hardcore 🙂 I grew up near a Great Harvest, I love their bread so much! We used to run there in track (it was 2 miles from the high school) just to eat the free samples and then run back!
Ilana says
Are you guys GH franchise no. 226? Regardless-Lucky number for you!
So glad you are having a fun and exciting adventure with Matt!
I hope the rest of the trip goes even better!

Kath says
The cost of real estate!
MT girlie says
Time and budget allowing…. step on over to the “Pata-gucci outlet” after all that bread nibblin’ for some capilene… they often have great sales on tops/bottoms… varying weights… will make your chilly jaunts throughout Dillon even more enjoyable : >

I liked seeing that map laying out where all the stores are located. The one in Tennessee is in Nashville but we need one in Memphis. We used to have one years ago. We all wish it would come back! I remember going there with my Mom when I was little and getting delicious samples.

chiara says
love reading about this stage of your journey. so exciting! we just moved to the DC area 5 weeks ago and in honor of your new adventure, i checked and found out that there is a Rockville Great Harvest about 10 minutes from my house. My sons (3 and 1) and I went and checked it out this afternoon. Great products. Sampled the pumpkin bread and the honey wheat and bought a loaf of challah. Definitely going back for the Dakota and and the High Five Fiber later this week. What is the deal with freezing GH bread–any tips? I wasnt so impressed with the store/set-up. The photos you have posted of some of the other ones look much nicer/hipper/what have you. Very friendly staff though. Im sure your and Matt’s location will be awesome in its design. Cant wait! Stay warm!
Kath says
Hey Chiara! Long time no talk 🙂
So glad you found the store. High Five Fiber is definitely one of my favorites!!
Josephine @ Creating a Positive Life says
So glad to see Alaska on the map. We have a Great Harvest here in Anchorage, AK and it is A-MA-ZING! As I am sure all locations are and yours will be 🙂

ezzie says
YAY I just went to the GH website and found one super close to where I live! & I didn’t even know about it! 😛
Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says
love it!
and i didnt know your background was specifically in food science. My sister just got her masters in food science. She already had a master’s in chemistry! She’s my Alton Brown 🙂
Kath says
Well the RD degree is 20% food science – but I don’t really have any more background than that!
Allison @ Happy Tales says
Gosh, Dillon look so charming! Question– do you by chance know which city has the most Great Harvest Bread Co.’s? Just curious, 226 is a lot!
Kath says
Well I don’t think there are more than a couple in each city because one owner gets each area and most of the time there’s only one per 10 mile radius or so, but I know some of the Western towns have a lot, and Northern VA and North Carolina cities!
Karen says
Found the nearest Great Harvest today – an hour away in Austin. Bought one loaf & will definitely be back. Good luck to you with your adventures.
stacey-healthylife says
I bet learning all about the wheat and grinding was probably very interesting, in a nerdy way, but still fun.
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
How fun! It must be great putting your food science experience to use. And the bread tastings would be totally wonderful. 😀
Have fun! 😀
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says

Amanda says
It’s so much fun reading about this experience you guys are having. The towns in Montana are adorable. It’s so interesting getting a peek into Great Harvest. Also, fun to read how many people went out today and found their local stores. And I was so happy to see my local GH red pushpin on the map-Rockford, Illinois!!
Joelle (The Pancake Girl) says
I am STILL dying to try Great Harvest bread- you make it look so amazing! I think there’s one in Vegas so next time I go back home to visit my fam I’m going to check it out.
Thanks for the coat tip earlier!

Anne (butter and bear) says
Looks like such a cute town, but I don’t think I could handle walking around in 0 degree weather!
Chelo says
We only have one GH in central, WA and by luck I was going there today for an appointment because it’s a 2 hour drive from my hometown. I made a point of stopping and buying their bread I love the honey swirl and will be back for more! 🙂 I so enjoy reading your blog by the way.

I LOVE Matt’s t-shirt! Any idea where he got it?
Kath says
Twin Oats Tofu! Where we toured
Meaghan @ OhReillyWrites says
I was looking over the GH map and was surprised to see one around my county! After some googling, I realized they have a store two streets over from my dad’s house. Guess I’ll have to stop by tomorrow and see what all the fuss is about 🙂
Caitlin (Radiate Life) says
Montana looks amazing! Your adventure chronicles just beckon me West that much more. My aunt studied at UM-Missoula for a semester in the 90s, and I’ve wanted to trek out there ever since. Perhaps my honeymoon 🙂
Hope says
I love Great Harvest Bread. I’m lucky that there is one within 15 minutes of my house and 10 minutes from work! Their challah bread is incredible!
Ashley (The Vegetable Life) says
I need to find a Great Harvest near me!!!! I want to try this bead soooo bad!!!!!!!
Allison W. says
Any plans for additional Great Harvests in Chicago? The one in Shorewood near my sister’s house closed in 2010. Its too bad that we don’t have one in the city, I would think there’s a high demand!
