And eaten with a spoon?
That extra hour allowed me to read in bed last night for 30 minutes! It was fun times. I was asleep by 9:26 and my alarm went off at 5:46 – nearly 8.5 hours. Not quite 9, but I’ll take it
I showered and came down to make a big green SIAB.
The Mix
- 1 cup frozen strawberries
- 1 small frozen banana
- 2 GIANT handfuls spinach
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 packet Green SuperFood
- 1 tsp cocoa powder
Now I’m COLD!
I added the Superfood powder because why not?
But here’s where the real magic lies:
Yum! I got addicted to cocoa in green smoothies from the Chocolate Amazing Meal. A little cocoa isn’t quite the same, but it’s still good!
Topped with Nature’s Path, coconut butter and Nuttzo PF
A discount is coming on the Nuttzo PF next week!
Today’s beverage was a ChocoMint Tiger Wing tea from Golden Moon.
I liked the chocolate after taste, but wish it had been [a lot] mintier.
Freezing cold! Our heat is off and summer has reverted back to spring. Brrrr!
Good Bite
Here’s the Greek Pasta Salad I made a while back for a Good Bite video!
Time for Tuesday!
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
Ah gosh, don’t even get me started on SIAB! The BEST way to start the day 😀 I’ve literally had about 10 in the past 2 weeks 😛 I add a tbsp of cocoa powder in mine – I think it gives it much more depth of flavour, it’s delicious 😀
Have a good day!
Jenn (www. j3nn.net ) says
Oooh, strawberries, that’s newly KERF (or maybe I missed it). 🙂 Love the bowl it’s in!!
Jenn
Kath says
Ha! yes, new 🙂
Veggielady4life says
LOVE the SIAB bowl today!! It’s my favorite in a while!!
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
I’ve never tried SIAB! Must be nice to slow down and eat it with a spoon rather than drink it because it lasts longer! Plus, you can add toppings that way. Delicious!
Wei-Wei says
I hate it when the weather fools you into thinking it’s going to be warm… then the temperatures drop again. It’s so annoying to have to check the weather everyday! Oh well, I guess that’s spring for ya… Looks like the skies just love being bipolar 😉
What would happen if you didn’t add any ilquid to SIAB? Would you get an extremely THICK smoothie or something like the banana soft serve people have been talking about?
Loving your blog as always! 😀
Wei-Wei
Kath says
I don’t think it would even blend – it would be so thick.
coco says
great video!!! 🙂
have a nice day Kath!
Annie@stronghealthyfit says
I will definitely buy some nutzo if there’s any kind of discount 😉 I’m dying to try that stuff!!
Claire says
I can’t wait for the Nuttzo discount! I really have been wanting to try this stuff…love the cute video too.
Jil @ Peace, Love & Munchies says
I agree – it’s reverted back to chilly weather up here and I don’t approve! haha The breakfast looks delicious!!
Naomi (onefitfoodie) says
love that video!!! so cute and that recipe does sound SO easy! i never thought to add the veggies to the hot water!! 🙂
Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) says
I just can’t get into SIAB — but hey, different strokes for different folks. 😉 I love smoothies/GM’s as a snack but my brain doesn’t accept they are “enough” for a meal (even though I know they are haha)
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Yeah, Tuesday…one day down…4 more to go! I need to get on the smoothie thing, but have not been to the store yet. Question, will the spinach mix in well with a blender or is the vita-mix the only way to go with it? Have a great day, Kath!
Amy @ The adventures of a ginger grad student says
Hey Sarena,
I make smoothies in my magic bullet blender or a regular blender all the time with spinach. It usually blends in really well, but I recommend pre-blending the spinach first with the liquid, then adding the rest, I do that all the time in my big blender and it prevents chunks. I also do that if I want to add oatmeal or cottage cheese, and it works as well.
Pat Kilmain says
I do just the opposite – add the spinach last, and it works fine! I just have a regular blender.
Kath says
I had no problem with spinach in my Cuisinart blender, but I couldn’t get kale smooth. The Vita-mix can handle kale no problem and does blend things even smoother than ever.
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Thanks! I will definitely give it a try! I have been craving spinach lately and with the warmer weather, smoothies are looking very appealing! I will give it a go!
jen trinque says
Ugh, I know, we had to put the winter comforter back on the bed because the temps got so chilly again (in western North Carolina)! No fun! That prompted me to have oatmeal for breakfast – no cold smoothies for me!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
LOVE cocoa in smoothies! i just came up with a chocolate covered strawberry green monster and a chocolate peanut butter green monster, and they both have regular cocoa powder in them. YUM!
Food Makes Fun Fuel says
I didn’t know scharffen burger sold cocoa powder! Their chocolate is the best
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
Yummy looking breakfast! I love adding superfoods to my smoothies!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
Yum! You and I are breakfast twins…but my green monster doesn’t have the same fun toppings 🙁
Katie says
Hi Kath! First time responding and I’m pretty excited about it! My name is Katie and your breakfast looks delicious. I read your bio and I just wanted to let you know I’m an RD and am curious how you are enjoying your experience of becoming one! I just graduated in August with my Masters and took my RD exam in November after I got married in September. Your story is very inspiring and I bet you’re excited to almost be done with your 2.5 journey to becoming an RD! Congrats in advance and I’ll talk to you later 🙂
Kath says
Hi! I am enjoying it 🙂 I’m in my last few months of clinical at a big hospital, but sadly I can’t really blog about any day-to-day details.
Kierstan says
Gotta love a green smoothie in the morning, whether in a bowl or mug!
Your pasta salad looks marvelous…needs some tomatoes though! 🙂
Jessie says
Nothin’ like a greeen smoothie to start the day right 🙂
Christina says
It’s been so cold in the mornings here in NY too. The Earth tricked us with that summer weather!
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
We just went from Summer weather to Winter weather! Such a trick 🙁
Paige(Running Around Normal) says
It’s getting a little chilled here in Illinois, too. Brrrr! The smoothie looks great as always!

Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
I loooove SIABs!!!
This weather is not making me happy 🙁 I miss the high 70s! But I’m sure it’ll be back up there before we know it!
Daniel says
I was disappointed that I didn’t find a picture of the fungus in the back of the 3rd floor dorm freezer when I read the title for your post… (Just kidding :P)
The SIAB looks great as usual! I know what you mean about the cold though, I can’t stand it or else I’d have one before my workouts because of how easy they are to eat 🙂
Midgetkeeper says
I love chocolate in anything! Have a great day.
Cait (Cait's Plate) says
STASH tea makes a GREAT chocolate mint flavor – both chocolate and mint come out really well in it.
That SIAB looks amazing as always – I’ll never get over my love for those bowls!! They’re almost as beautiful as what’s inside 🙂
Chelsea (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) says
Your post reminded me that it’s been far too long since I had a bright green monster. In a bowl, no less. Love your selection of toppings! It all looks like a delicious, nutritious breakfast soup. 🙂
Brynn says
I added cocoa to a SIAB last week and had to throw it out. It was that exact cocoa powder actually. Maybe it’s better if there’s a banana in there to sweeten it up.
Amanda @ Cakes and Ale says
I love to mix cocoa powder in my oatmeal too… and plain yogurt! Chocolate pretty much goes with anything, in my opinion!
Lauren @ eater not a runner says
I have the same cocoa powder….so good for smoothies 🙂
Amber K says
I neer thought to eat a green monster in a bowl! But I love adding unsweetened cocoa powder to my green monsters. Something about eating something green that tastes like chocolate….so good!
Lily @ Lily's Health Pad says
I adore tea, and I’ve never seen a chocolate mint flavored one! That sounds soooo good!
Heather (The Single Dish) says
Great video! Love greek pasta salad, yum.
[email protected] says
I wish things would warm up so I would want to drink my green smoothies again. I just can’t do it when the weather is cold!
Abby says
I can’t get past that dirt tast with the amazing grass. Even the chocolate flavor. I still drink it sometimes, though because I know it’s good for me!
KRISTEN'S RAW says
I adore those pictures! YUM YUM!!!! I’m off to make my smoothie now. 🙂
Cheers,
Kristen

Ashley says
Tea Spot in Boulder, CO [I think you got samples from them??] makes THEE most amazing Green Roasted Mint loose leaf tea. No chocolate…but sooo refreshing. Strong, earthy and minty!! Just thought I’d pass that along 😉
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
That tea sounds really good and almost dessert like. Chocolate in anything is always a good thing.
Lisa says
ooh peanut free Nuttzo- how do you like it? better than original, or the same?
i dont think there would be too much of a change, i dont think nuttzo was too peanutty to begin with !!
very flaxseedy to me 😉
(yea, im making up words tonight!)
Kath says
It’s soooooo much better!! Hazelnutty and sweet and fluffy from the chia seeds!
Hannah says
Oooh, the coconut looks even more like snow in this post! (Funny how I can feel nostalgic about snow now, once I’m back in Australia with no chance of being bombarded with it again :P) One day, I’ll have a blender and be able to make your SIABS…
