^^^I LOVE this quote. It is the answer to so many questions about life, priorities, and big decisions. And it’s a reminder to not sweat the small stuff.
Speaking of sweating, I’ve been loving the sauna before my workouts lately! I try to get to the gym 15 minutes before class starts and go in there to warm up. It has the same effect that “just put on your workout clothes” does to get you more pumped for a workout. I pretend it’s July and I’m about to jump in a pool! I just wear my workout clothes because I leave before I really start to sweat, so it’s easy to pop in and out. My muscles always say thank you when we start the class warm-up!
Speaking of workout classes, I’ve been lifting less weight this year. Last year I REALLY pushed myself and got a lot stronger. But during the fall, when I was playing in two soccer games per Sunday, I started to take Mondays off of strength class and then still grabbed my same weights on Wednesdays. The result of going from two to one strength training classes a week is that I got a little weaker without realizing it and then hurt myself a few times. So now I’m a notch lower on all weight fronts, but I’m still feeling good and tired at the end of class. The ole guns don’t seem all that much smaller
Speaking of soccer, I am not planning to play in the women’s league this spring, which makes me really sad. Last spring and fall I was just playing SO MUCH soccer on Sundays – sometimes up to three games – and it was hard to walk at the end of the day. I love both women’s league and co-ed, but, since I am the captain of co-ed and have been with my team for three years now, I decided to let women’s league go. I’m hoping I can still come back and sub for some games though!
And speaking of Sundays, I think Mazen and I are taking a little excursion this Sunday, since there is no school on Monday. Stay tuned!

I have to say, I’m intrigued by the idea of going in the sauna BEFORE a workout! There isn’t a sauna at my gym, and honestly, I never go in them anyway. However, I’ve always been told to go in AFTER a workout?
KathEats says
Well I’m not going in to sweat out all the hydration in my body. When I go in before, I leave when I start to sweat (which takes about 6-8 minutes if I’m starting from cold!)

I love these little casual posts! The sauna sounds soo nice 🙂 It’s so great you’ve managed to keep playing a team sport as an adult. I always loved playing basketball (though I’m truly terrible at it haha), but never play now. I may need to look for a very casual group to play with…one that would not mind if I never scored a basket!
KathEats says
Look in your community! I bet you have an adult league. Teams are always looking for new players here, even if you’re very rusty!

I like this quick little post! Short, informative, and personal. Kinda like one of those “How ya doin? Here’s what’s up with me” text messages from a friend!
well here’s what’s up with me. I”ve been eating well (lotsa big ol salads, good proteins, conscious about the type of carbs), but I need to amp up the physical activity again so I’m getting back into yoga and jogging.
KathEats says
I always need more yoga!! Just waiting for the day when ACAC has hot vinyasa : )

I love this quote, too! I’ve actually thought about it a lot in terms of my (new) business. I try to spend more time (than I did before, at least) thinking about the things that actually matter, like helping people feel better and making the business sustainable, instead of the number of followers on Instagram, FB, etc. It’s also a great quote for life in general. Thanks for the reminder!

I love the quote too! I haven’t had a sauna in so long, but one seriously sounds perfect right now in the freezing weather!

I’ve been super into all these books and success gurus recently and they all say that the only thing philosophers agree on is that you will become what you focus on! Dream and focus that’s the plan!

Just if your interested in this little cultural/historical fact about saunas. My husband is of Finnish heritage, and they use the sauna as part of the bathing routine. You shower and then you go into the sauna for relaxation. And, when it gets too hot, you go jump in the lake, shower, or snow 🙂 Women even used to give birth in saunas because they were sterile. It’s also a no no to wear clothes in the sauna.
KathEats says
I would love to spend an hour doing sauna / shower / sauna / shower : ) I also wouldn’t wear clothes if I had more time to undress, rinse off, etc, but my philosophy is that some sauna is better than no sauna.
Jana says
I hope your workout clothes are made of natural fibers because synthetic fibers release toxins in the temperatures saunas create. Toxins that other people will breathe through their skin and their respiratory system. Please consider wearing natural fibers.

Hi Kath. Long time reader here. Just for a little background, I went to a blog meet-up at the Brooklyn Brewery in 2009? 2010? I credit you with my love of kale and acorn squash. I even cut my citrus differently after a lesson you got while doing your school rotation for your RD. All that to say I’m not a casual reader! But I have been lately. Your blog used to be slice of life with a focus on the food, healthy eating, exercise, what’s new in nutrition, how to fit it all in, volunteerism (hey Girls on the Run). Now it seems very flipped. Is this the new KERF? If so, that’s your prerogative but I can’t be the only reader who misses the inspiration I used to get from your blog. Am I???
KathEats says
Hi Abby, can you tell me what you mean by flipped? Do you just mean it seems I don’t care about those things anymore? I think after having a baby, I am still trying to figure out the best work/life balance between topical posts that allow me to work ahead by are less personal and lifestyle posts that talk more about my personal experiences with healthy living on a day-to-day real-time basis. I’m finally feeling a more predictable schedule so that I can write more spur-of-the-moment, but I am also not the same person I was 7 years ago. I just have to go with the flow and write what feels most natural, and I’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback lately on how things are going, so I gotta keep that in mind too. Thanks for the note.

I’ve been focusing on strength training since having my son and it makes such a huge difference. Come to think of it, I have avoided injuries for over a year, yay!

I am so intrigued about the soccer teams you play on – it sounds so fun. I want to join a local league but I have ZERO experience besides watching my niece and nephew play ? Any advice?
KathEats says
There are definitely players in our league who have never played before. Most teams in the lower divisions are happy to have another active body because you can learn the game. I’d recommend finding your adult league contact and emailing them to see if they can assign you to a team. Another option is to ask around for some pickup games in your area and start there so you can get a little experience before joining an organized team.
