I can’t remember the last time I was sick. I think it was in 2009 when Karen and I both came down with something after a trip to Asheville. Late Thursday I started feeling queasy and then…it was all downhill for the rest of the night. Being sick with a baby who wants to nurse every 2 hours all night was rough. One time I just got him latched on and had to jump back up and run. Ugh. THANKFULLY he never got what I had, which we think sounded like norovirus or the stomach flu. Hooray for breast milk. Things had calmed down by Friday, but developed a fever of 101 all day! Matt had to go into work, so I was home with Mazen. He played on the floor while I laid next to him and passed him toys until Matt could come home and took care of him the rest of the day so I could sleep. Single parents: hats off once again.
It took me the entire weekend plus some, but my stomach is finally feeling better. If I didn’t know otherwise, I would have thought I drank 2 bottles of wine AND had morning sickness at the same time. The lingering nausea took me right back to a year ago…the food aversions, the constant churning. Thank goodness for maternal fat stores because I barely ate anything and somehow managed to keep my milk supply going. Mazen didn’t seem affected at all by the whole ordeal.
First meal – buttered toast + Izze from the bakery
Tried to drink some chicken broth and ate an egg with more toast for dinner
This was the most delicious AB&J sandwich. Just like mom used to make. Loaded up to pack in the calories. It’s rare that you’re trying to make a 500 calorie sandwich, but I knew I needed the fuel!
I only managed to eat half of this chicken breast + cheese sandwich for dinner. And that’s the only green thing I ate all weekend.
Feeling a little better on Sunday…
Kodiak cake with banana + syrup. Not a typical KERF pancake to be so simple!
Lunch was a tortilla with egg and avocado
Matt and I were lucky enough to be able to slip away for a few hours to go on a date! To see The Hobbit!!!! We are HUGE Lord of the Rings fans and our first date was to see Fellowship of the Ring 11 years ago. It was surreal sitting in the theater with an encore of our favorite trilogy, and we both loved the first of The Hobbit movies. The dialogue was great, and the foodie scenes even better!!
We enjoyed some classic popcorn and a Coke Zero that made my stomach feel much better (at mom’s advice!)
For the Superbowl, we had Kipton (who babysat!) and Karen over to make pizzas.
My little football! My aunt + uncle (who live in Baltimore) gave us this onesie. So glad he had the perfect occasion to wear it!
ACHOO!
Salad
Dough
We made a version of THIS pizza in honor of New Orleans. Andouille, shrimp, chicken, gruyere, cream sauce.
Wish I could have fit more, but my stomach was just not having it. I was proud of eating those greens though!
Lots of sparkling water –
Maze calls this his heartbreaker face : )
Here’s to a healthier second half of the week!
Hillary | Nutrition Nut on the Run says
Yummm… I love your love for pizza. I think pesto pizza is a must for my weekly menu.
To a healthier week…!
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I hope you feel better! Despite not feeling good, all of the food in this post looks and sounds great! I love the pizza. 🙂
Lynn @ the actor's diet says
Being sick stinks!!! Glad it didn’t affect the little guy.
Mom says
Glad you’re better. Go Baltimore Ravens!
Carly @ Snack Therapy says
It’s a little bit ironic that this time last year you were dealing with morning sickness! It’s like you came full circle, except now you have your darling little peanut on the outside : ).
I’m loving that sneeze picture. What a great moment to capture! Your food looks delicious as always. Sometimes simplicity is the best! Buttered toast and AB&J sandwiches = Yum!
Jess. says
Glad to see you are feeling better! Sickness sucks & I imagine it to be a thousand times worse with a wee one :-\
Sara @ fitcupcaker says
Def a heartbreak face…so cute! I would never want to leave my house if that little guy was around! All your bread looks so awesome!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
Ugh, so sorry to hear you weren’t feeling well! What a blessing that little Mazen didn’t get it though. Glad you’re feeling a little better now!
JessicaR says
I am not a kid person at ALL, but those sneezing photos even warmed my cold heart! 😉 Too cute!
emily says
Glad you’re feeling better! Your sick eats were still more exciting than my weekend eats 🙂
Shel@PeachyPalate says
Oh god you poor thing! I hope you feel better soon; my go to nausea cure are ice lolly’s – even just frozen juice is good! Good call on the Maranatha and Jam sambo, even amidst the sickness tails you have managed to ignite a food craving!
Amelia says
You poor thing! Taking care of a baby while sick is so brutal. The only benefit is that when you’re back to the routine, it feels pretty easy for awhile. Sending healthy wishes! xoxo
KathEats says
True!!! It’s feeling easy today 🙂
cathy says
There is a horrible flu going around. Both my kids had it. Glad you’re feeling better and so glad Maze didn’t catch it!!
Monique says
Ugh, I had the norovirus last weekend. It was the worst weekend of my life and the quickest 10 lbs i ever lost. Glad you are feeling better!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Oh no, that sounds awful! I got the flu right before Christmas but luckily I just had an awful fever (103) and a little nausea for a few days.
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
Ugh Kath, that sounds awful. I have felt sick before at times and can only describe it as you did, ‘drank 2 bottles of wine AND had morning sickness at the same time’ and it’s the worst! Thankfully you’re on the mend, god bless maternal fat stores for milk production, and that Mazen was unaffected!
Brooke says
I know I won’t be the only one to say this, but the picture of Mazen sneezing is adorable! So fun that you caught it in a picture. I’m also glad to hear that you’re feeling better.
Nina @ Too Hottie For That Body says
Oh yuck, I’m so glad you’re better. Everytime I feel nauseous I claim that I will never get pregnant again, not ever… but I’ve got two daughters so this hasn’t proven to be that great of a form of birth control.
Colleen says
Mazen is just getting cuter and cuter – love those cheeks!
Anna @ On Anna's Plate says
Oh man– being sick like that SUCKS. You’re a trooper for feeding Mazen through the whole ordeal– and yes, a wonder that he didn’t get sick too!!
Glad you got to enjoy some yummy food by the end of the weekend at least!
Diane says
Sorry you were so sick! I remember having a stomach virus when my first child was 4 weeks old and my husband had to go to work so I was on my own. I remember leaning over to barf while nursing, it was awful. Then it got even worse when both my husband and daughter got it too. I made my husband’s mom come over and take care of her son while I took care of my daughter and myself. I couldn’t take care of all 3 of us (I was still feeling bad) at one time.
Mazen is getting so handsome!
KathEats says
Oh gosh!
Kat @ Kat's Health Corner says
I’ve always loved your food photography, but my goodness, you capture the most perfect moments of Mazen! Gorgeous!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
He could seriously not be any cuter! I’m glad you’re feeling better. Being sick and being the mom are NOT easy. You took it like a champ! I hope this week is much better for you.
Dayna says
Glad to see that Mazen is a Ravens fan!!
Cathy says
Sorry to hear u were sick Kath. I had oral surgery for a fractured molar. PAIN!! Still recovering from it and hoping all the stitches dissolve soon. I think I’ve lost weight not eating regular meals. Take care.
Tara says
I’m disappointed to see Mazen in a Ravens onesie despite how cute he looks! Next time he needs to wear a 49ers one 🙂
Kavi says
OMG, that first photo of Mazen is so cute I want to reach through the screen and hug him 🙂 Sorry to hear that you were sick, but glad to hear you’re on the mend!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Sorry to hear you’ve been so under the weather and out of commission Kath! Being sick is never fun. I can’t say I’ve ever been into the Lord of the Rings, but now that you’ve mentioned foodie scenes in the Hobbit, I may be a little interested. 😉 PS Mazen is quite possibly one of the cutest babies I’ve ever seen. He’s going to be a heartbreaker for sure!
Kaila @healthyhelperblog! says
Wow Mazen is so adorable! I love all the expressive faces! Definitely a great little personality coming out!!!
Jeanie says
I’m glad you’re feeling better. Oh, how I hate being sick. I’m from California so was going to mention that Mazen (who happens to get cuter every time I see a new picture) has the wrong onesie on, but I’ll let it pass. And the pizza looks delish!
Sarah says
Booooo! We all had this about three weeks ago. So hard to go through it yourself, worse to have to take care of little ones who have it. So glad Maze steered clear. You did a good job hanging in there, Kath!
ashley says
He’s such a cute baby!
Sara @ sarasmiles says
Nice action shot with the sneeze! He looks as happy as can be. And I’m so sorry you were sick, but glad to hear you’re feeling better. AB&J makes even the weakest stomachs better
Megan S says
Augh! The sneeze pictures! Dying from cuteness.
Sarah (The Simple Dietitian) says
I hope you are feeling completely better!
The pictures of you and Mazen are just so sweet. You’re absolutely beautiful, and I love to see how happy and healthy you look with your adorable little boy. 😀
Pam says
Sorry you were sick, no fun 🙁 Glad you didn’t pass it on to Mazen.
My Dad and stepmom got a stomach bug recently when they went to run the Disney half-marathon. They got sick a few hours later and were stuck in bed at the hotel for a few days. They were feeling well enough for their flight home on a Tuesday (they got sick on a Saturday), but were still not 100% until the end of the week.
Lindsay says
Oh my goodness that sneeze photo made my day! Maze is just a bundle of adorableness. I do not know how you did the mommy-thang whilst sick, I had what it sounds like you had two weeks ago and could barely move off the sofa I was so weak!! Glad you are feeling better, and The Hobbit was amazing! My hubs and I kept saying how we loved journeying back into that world again:)
Lisa says
You just described my 4 year old over the past day. He finally stopped throwing up and then the fever came! Bleaching away to try to prevent the rest of us from catching it!
Glad you are feeling better.
How much does Mazen weigh now? He is so chubby! 🙂
KathEats says
Probably like 19-20 pounds by now
Sandra says
Such a cutie and very photogenic – which is probably lucky with how many photos you take!!!!
Lovely picture of you and Matt going to the movies, date night never gets old.
Elisabeth says
Sounds like norovirus to me…yuck! Glad you’re feeling better 🙂
Alison says
Hope you are recovering well! The bug is most certainly going around…I was sick on Friday with a fever and through the weekend I had a bad cold. Now I just don’t have a voice!
I cannot get enough of Mazen’s big smile–so cute!!
That AB&J sammie looks like it hit the spot!
Dynamics says
Not to age myself here but I used to get a small bottle of cola syrup from the pharmacist. Guaranteed to help calm an upset stomach. Worked every time. The Pediatrician is the one who gave me the prescription for my daughter. I always thought you should drink 7-up and boy was I wrong.
Eileen says
HA … I had that once. I got a stomach bug the day of our school play. I had the lead … NO WAY was I missing it, and Coke syrup got me through. Ahhhh, memories!
Jennyh says
Sickness is the worst esp for moms with infants. I got the GI bug wheny twins were 3 months old for like 3 days. It was just awful. I had stopped nursing so luckily my husband could take them out of the house and leave me in isolation. I couldn’t imagine takin care of them and running to the bathroom.
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Baby SNEEZE! Who knew that could be so cute?! 😉
Anne @ eatcleaneatreal.com says
Oh no…so sorry you were sick 🙁 That is NO FUN. But Mazen is just about the cutest thing in the entire world. Im sure that made you feel better when you were lying on the floor!
a farmer in the dell says
being sick is the pits! hopefully you guys have a better rest of the week.
Joe @ The Frolicking Fells says
My wife and I love The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings too! (We are actually planning on watching all three extended edition versions of the original trilogy this weekend.)
My wife even recently started up her own Middle Earth-themed food blog called Middle-Earth Meals, featuring recipes inspired by the books and movies. (http://middleearthmeals.com/)
KathEats says
Oh how fun!! Hope there are lots of taters : )
Joe @ The Frolicking Fells says
She just updated it a few minutes ago actually and now we’re going to have a Lord of the Rings Extended Edition Marathon! I put up a post too about how the movies have affected me. Needless to say, we’re just a little obsessed…hah!
the 3volution of j3nn says
Mazen is getting so big! He’s adorable. That smile is gold. Thankfully he didn’t catch what you had. At least it’s gone now. 🙂
Jen says
I hope you feel better soon Kath! Just wanted to say thanks for being an inspiration – you keep doing what you want to do and don’t let others change that.
You and Matt are soooo cute together by the way 🙂
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
I am so glad you are feeling better. I read an article on the norovirus last night. It looks like everyone is getting it this year and it’s highly contagious. It is so hard when you are sick and have to take care of little ones. Looks like you did a great job though and ended up having a pretty good weekend 🙂
Chelsea @ Designs on Dinner says
So far, the only people who have told me they liked ‘The Hobbit’ were those who have never seen ‘The Lord of the Rings.’ I’m glad you and Matt enjoyed it–finally I can go see it! 🙂
KathEats says
Really? I can see how those who LOVED LOTR might think The Hobbit would spoil the purity or something. But I’m all for more entertainment : )
carol says
What a sweet, sweet child. He’s beautiful!!1
lily says
Why in the world are you feeding an almost 5 month old every 2 hours at night?! I am confused.
KathEats says
I don’t normally – he was just up and crying all night and it seemed to be what he wanted
brett says
yeah, kath. how dare you take are of your child?!
Liz says
Argh sorry to hear you were ill. Glad to hear you are better now!
Mazen looks like such a happy baby 🙂
Mollie says
he is precious! 🙂
Patty says
The sneezing pictures are my favorite. So cute! In some of the pictures that you’ve posted I can remember reading posts and seeing pictures where you have the same expressions on your face as Mazen does. Biology is amazing!
Hope you are back to 100%!
Laurie says
Oh how terrible! Glad you’re feeling better! Mazen is spool adorable!! You and Matt make beautiful babies! 🙂
Laurie says
Sorry should be ‘soooo adorable’!

The PB&J looks delicious, it’s making me crave one right now! What a childhood fave (but actually, for me, pb&js remind me most of high school…)
Spice Chicken says
Poor Kath! I’m catching up on posts and it is so good to hear you are feeling better now. On an unrelated note, you might enjoy the novel The Brief, Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao by Junot Diaz. It has a lot of Tolkien references.
Amanda says
I had the exact same thing last weekend….that’s why I’m just now getting back to your blog! It feels good to have an appetite again. Be well 🙂
Diana @ Eating Made Easy says
Your pizza’s always look amazing! I’m def going to try your dough recipe next time I make pizza. I just came down with a cold…feeling lucky it’s not the flu. Feel better.
