Guess who came to visit this weekend? Grammie Buzz and Pea! It was mom’s 60th birthday and she chose to spend it with her cute grandson.
When they arrived on Thursday we all headed down to the park after nap. Lots of our friends were there to join us!
BFFs!
Mom’s birthday dinner came next. (Note the background game of chase between Mazen and Pea! Pea is also pleased that Mazen can say his name – Hi Pea! Bye-Bye Pea!)
We served rosemary flank steak from The Organic Butcher
Some of the best sweet potato fries we’ve ever made (thanks to a super long roast)
And a green salad with some Flora Dutch gouda that my mom proclaimed was the best cheese she’s ever tasted!
Of course we had been looking forward to dessert for months!
Two dozen Sweet Haus mini cupcakes!
Lemon // Cookie Dough // Pistachio // Coconut // Carrot Cake // Almond
Happy Birthday to you!
Everybody loved them : )
On Friday, after bowls of oatmeal, mom and I went to the gym together. We had Bodos bagels and salads for lunch.
After nap we packed up and headed to Jefferson Vineyards for the afternoon with our friends Sarah + Sylvia. They have lots of green space for running!
A sharing dispute…
But don’t worry, Mazen loves his “Saya”
Friday evening Matt and I left the grandparents in charge and went out on a date!
I made sure everything was all laid out before we left
And then it was out on the town!
We went to Brookville, a fabulously local restaurant
This is my new favorite drink: The Buffalo Gold. It’s a mix of Foggy Ridge Cider Pippin Gold, Buffalo Trace bourbon, grenadine, ginger ale and a cherry. Sweet and bourbon-y! I actually found the recipe here!
Matt got the most neon Saison ever!
We had the perfect window table for people watching!
We love that Brookville offers a 3-courses-for-$36 option, so we flew with that for the evening. Surprise us chef!
We were first served an amuse of bacon fat popcorn. Whoa was this good…and perfectly salted! Brookville has a thing for bacon : )
Next up: Manakintowne Chive & Gouda Fritters
Perfectly crunchy!
Our second small plate was Woodson’s Mill Grits, Slow Cooked Egg, Greens and Mushrooms
Loved the drippy egg, and Woodson’s Mill grits are just incredible.
And finally – the House Seasoned Fried Chicken, Bacon Waffle, Fried Egg, Frisee, Kim Kim & Maple Syrup. SO good!
We left too full for another round or dessert. ‘Twas a delicious night!
Mom and Dad left on Saturday morning, and we ended the weekend with a cookout at our neighbor’s house.
Sunday I played a whole 90 minute soccer game that we sadly lost.
We went from 70* on Saturday eating outside to cold and rainy on Sunday. When will spring ever be here to stay!?
Sarah (The Simple Dietitian) says
What a fun filled weekend!!! And so nice that your parents were able to babysit for you and Matt (and nice for them to be able to spend some time with their grandson too, I’m sure!) 😀
And there’s just something about the outdoor pictures that make me deliciously happy. Maybe it’s the reminder that spring is on the way and New England will be seeing grass soon too!! 😉
Becky says
I’ve realized I’ve reached the point where I can no longer keep grits on hand that aren’t Woodson Mills. I’m totally hooked. Grits have long been my comfort food, but those are just oh my.
Livi says
Who wouldn’t want to spend their birthday with that cute little Mazen? Looks like a fun weekend!
Ali @ Peaches and Football says
The rosemary flank steak looks wonderful – I want that for dinner tonight!!!!
I’m still so envious of your beautiful weather – the kiddos don’t know how lucky they are to be able to prance around outside. It was 11 when I left for work this morning. I’m ready for 50 degree weather – let alone 60s or 70s. 🙂
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Haha it snowed here in Chicago so we’re still waiting on Spring! And those mini birthday cupcakes are so cute, great idea! I’d probably eat one of each flavor…
Maggie says
Ahh I was JUST saying I wanted to go back to Brookville soon, and now I think it’s on the list for this weekend. I love that popcorn, and the hot sauce on the chicken and waffles is SO good. I tried Zin Burger last night- YUM!! I can’t say it necessarily beats Citizen, but it’s way closer to us, so it’s definitely a good option to have.
Jackie says
What a fun weekend!!!!
Tragic Sandwich says
What a great weekend–and what great meals!
Elizabeth {Positively Healthy} says
Awesome looking weekend!! The food all looks divine. Loving your jacket with the navy stripes!
Hannah @ eat, drink and save money says
I gave bacon up for lent, but purposely kept bacon fat on the rotation. I need that popcorn. I have a mild obsession with truffle oil on my popcorn so I know bacon fat popcorn would make me happy too!
Cheri Armour says
Lots of pretty photos for the weekend! What kind of camera are you taking your photos with?
KathEats says
A Canon Mark II : )
Jess @ The Baguette Diet says
That Brookville food looks amazing! I love the whole classic Southern food revisited trend, seems to be everywhere these days…except Paris unfortunately 🙁
Ali says
A date night sounds so glorious! I need to work on that for my husband and I!
Leah @ goodnightcheese says
All this amazing looking food is making me hungry. Did you and Matt each get three different courses, or three of the same?
KathEats says
You had to do 3 of the same, but we would have loved to do 3 different

Looks like a fun weekend. Mazen is such a cutie pie! But has he been feeling ok? I’m only asking because his cheeks are so red – my son developed similar red blotches on his cheeks and it turned out to be a parvovirus colloquially called “slapped cheek disease.” It’s not particularly dangerous, but if Mazen has it too, he might start feeling pretty unwell, cranky, feverish and dehydrated if it goes untreated. I hope it’s not the case.
KathEats says
They were worse than ever last week. We just went to the doctor and she chalked it up to teething + cold winter air. (He has gotten 7 teeth in the past 2 months.) I slather on Aquaphor religiously now. He’s feeling fine otherwise! It’s actually MUCH better this week.
John B says
You take great pictures, and eat very well!
simple green moms says

We’re back cold too…possible snow tomorrow : (

Such a fun weekend! I am loving all of the food pictures. Looks like it was also a delicious weekend. Those Sweet Haus Cupcakes were delightful….I wish we had a cute cupcake shop around us.
foodandfarm says
Do you have a recipe for the rosemary flank steak?
KathEats says
It was from The Organic Butcher and came in their special herb marinade
Rebekah {aCricketSang} says
Such great photography as always!
The Zen Kat says
I love that picture of the little diva in sunnies! Model in training for sure. Brookville is delicious. Next time you’ll have to save room for their desserts. Chocolate cookies with bacon- strange but tasty! See you soon!
Rachel says
Looks like an awesome weekend! I have the same crib for my twins, and I’m wondering what kind of teething guard you have on the ends (looks like plastic?). I made some fabric covers for the sides, but the ends are tricky. Thank you!
KathEats says
We have this one on the ends and it’s been good so far.
Astrid says
I love your yellow jacket from the mom-kiddos-group picture! It looks cozy but spring-like at the same time! Same with the striped blazer in the with picture your friend Sarah. Simple but not boring 🙂
Kendall says
Aw, so cute! Looks like a great weekend, all in all. Your sweet potato wedges look amazing too!
kristin says
Looks like lots of fun! I love the aqua necklace. Can you share where it is from?
KathEats says
Matt got it for me in key west from a guy on the pier there

You weren’t joking about ‘lot’s of friends joining you’ at the park – wow, what a crew!! Looks like a great weekend, I love date nights. 🙂
Shel@PeachyPalate says
Happy Belated Bday to your mum!!! Which cupcake stole the show? Weather has taken a turn here too…windy, rainy, cold…about 4 degrees today and wind so strong it felt like the car might just blow over!
KathEats says
Coconut!
Mom says
Thanks!
Mom says
And they were all delicious, but I think the lemon was my very favorite.
Jenna says
Could you tell me how you do your sweet potato fries? I have tried them SO many times and they always come out soggy but I love them so I keep trying without success.
KathEats says
We coat them in olive oil, cinnamon, cayenne and salt and then roast on a cooling rack (like this one) for about an hour at 400*. 45 minutes at least.
Jen@HealthyFoodandFamily says
All that delicious food!!! My stomach is doing some serious grumbling right now…
Looks like a great weekend 🙂
Lydia Rehrman says

Thanks so much for the quick response to those questions for my paper. Wonderful information. And so jealous of that wonderful dinner. I live here in Baton Rouge, just a quick 50 minutes to New Orleans – unbelievable food. But I love that you have so many incredible places in such a close vicinity.
Sara says
Aw, I love that Mazen calls his friend Saya!! My name is Sara, and my brother, who is 18 months older than me, couldn’t pronounce the R in my name when I was a baby and also called me Saya! The rest of my family called me “Say” as a nickname to my brother’s mispronunciation and a couple of them still call me that, even as a 32 year old! That’s so cute to see another little one calling a Sara (or Sarah in this case!) Saya! 🙂
KathEats says
It’s his name for both mom Sarah and baby Sylvia : )
Jeanie says
Happy birthday to your mom! Both of your dinners look fantastic, and I’ll have the carrot cake cupcake, please.
Mom says
Thanks!
Anjar Vissell says
What beautiful pictures! You look so healthy and pretty. That restaurant looks GOOOOD! I am with English as my second language – what is an “amuse” of popcorn? I would like to order something like that!
KathEats says
Short for amuse-bouche : )
Sarahf says
What a great weekend! Your Mum does not look 60! Spring has arrived here, the cherry blossoms have all come out. Sadly it’s tipping with rain, so we can’t get out to enjoy them. 🙁
robin says
Karen looks great and so pretty in yellow:)
