Another weekend filled with fun to share with you all!
Fridays After Five have begun, which means we have plans every Friday until September!
It was so much fun to take Mazen, although a bit tricky to work around naps and bedtime. We took his dinner and ours to go and things worked out well in the end.
Little guy liked his broccoli, peas, butternut squash and green beans blend!
We parents shared two salads with our friends – a lentil and millet Moroccan salad (recipe coming) and a kale salad, plus we munched on their arugula pasta salad and a triple berry + mint fruit salad. Delish!
Another weekend routine that has started with springtime is the city market.
We met Matt there for breakfast because he had baked me a surprise loaf of Irish Soda Bread! My favorite, and like Christmas in July to get it so far out from St. Patrick’s Day.
Also for breakfast we shared fresh strawberries and a small donut
Later for lunch we made salads with leftover veggie burgers a friend made and kale from the garden
Mazen enjoyed more veggie blend and some oatmeal
Later in the afternoon we took Beansy to the park for some swingin’
And crawl practice
And laugh practice
And by late afternoon, we headed into the country to a friends’ house for an Alternative Foxfield Party. Foxfield is a big horse race here and quite the wild event. We used to attend the Carolina Cup in Camden, SC in college – I don’t know if I want to relive those days!
We dressed in bold colors and bowties to celebrate : )
We nibbled on cheese and crackers
Sipped mint juleps, of course
Raced the horses….er, zebras
And enjoyed dinner outside
Featuring No Bull Burgers
And a great arugula and bean salad
Sunday was slow and boring in contrast. We watched 3 episodes of Mad Men, took a walk, one of us took 3 naps, I went to yoga at Opal Yoga, Matt went running and we had quiche for dinner. Exciting times!
Kaila @healthyhelperblog! says
I love that it’s picnic weather again! So happy. The dad and son matching bow ties are adorable! What handsome bunch! 🙂
Ali @ Peaches and Football says
It’s great to see the family shots of the three of you together! I know that must be a challenge when you’re the one behind the camera but those photos of you guys together are so precious. What a beautiful family!
How do you like Mad Men? I watched the first episode and didn’t get hooked in at all and I’m wondering if it’s me or if I need to watch a few more to get into it.
KathEats says
It took us a while to get into it, but we love it now! Totally hooked. Just started season 3
Jessica says
My husband and I were VERY ambivalent after watching the first episode, but it gets better and better for sure.
Ali @ Peaches and Football says
Good to know – I’ll stick with it for a few more episodes then! Thanks 🙂
Anele @ Success Along the Weigh says
OH. MY. GOODNESS. That family pic of you all with your guys in bow ties is PRECIOUS! I hope you frame it somewhere! As usual, awesome eats and you make me feel like my bun selections are super boring! HA!
Katie says
I tried No Bull burgers when I was in Charlottesville last year! So good! I wish we had them here (not too far away in Blacksburg). That arugula bean salad looks yummy… is it a bean salad served over arugula or bean salad with arugula in it?
KathEats says
It was an arugula salad with garbanzos and whole wheat penne in it
Katie says
Yum 🙂
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
What adorable photos Kath!! Such a beautiful family.
Sara @ fitcupcaker says
What a fun packed weekend! Mazen keeps you busy for sure! He is so cute! I love being able to eat dinner outside in the warm weather!
Hayley @ Running on Pumpkin says
I want to try a No Bull Burger they always look amazing!
Diane says
They mentioned at the market last weekend that they do ship them!
Racheal @ Running with Racheal says
Those bow-ties kill me! So cute! 🙂 Now I am dreaming of a nice day at the park!
Diane says
LOVE the bowties! Mazen is so cute.
Who is your favorite strawberry vendor at the market? I recall last year having some trouble finding strawberries that hadn’t been sprayed.
KathEats says
I bought these from the Agriberry folks. She said they only spray when absolutely necessary and follow guidelines from an organization (that slips my mind) to keep things as close to organic as possible. I haven’t seen other vendors with them to bring up conversation yet though
Diane says
Thanks! 🙂
Lynn @ the actor's diet says
Bow ties. I die.
Marisa @ Uproot from Oregon says
Mazen is a veggie lover just like you! It’s so awesome!! Looks like a fun and wonderful weekend with lots of family time, and mint juleps never hurt of course : )
Stacy @ Stacy Eats says
How fun to have those Fridays after Five each week until September!
Sara R. says
So much fun! I LOVE Maze’s bowtie (and Matt’s too, of course)! I’m also so jealous that your farmer’s market is open already…it’s so much better than my local one to begin with AND it opens weeks earlier? Not fair!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Look at those little teeth!! So cute! 🙂
Karen says
LOVE the photos of Mazen eating his veggie blend (complete with spillover!) and the boys in their bow ties…absolutely adorable! Your looking so pretty in that green dress/top too!
Mazen is looking so much like you and your parents and especially Larbs these days – those distinctively shaped blue eyes!
How could a Sunday filled with back to back episodes of Mad Men be classified as boring?! Best show/characters ever created! 🙂
Matt says
Mazen is a stud in that bow-tie. Teaching him early. I love it!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
oh my gosh, that is too cute!!! I LOVE bowties and Maze looks adorable in his!
Morgan says
It’s so fun to get a sneak peek into how others enjoy their weekend time! Thanks for sharing 🙂

melinda says
My husband and i stopped in charlottesville while on vacation. Really enjoy your blog and enjoyed coffees and scriffins at the bakery. Keep up the good work that you do.
KathEats says
So glad you enjoyed your stay! And scriffins…lol! They are scuffins but scriffins is even cuter!
jill says
How do you make your mint julips??
KathEats says
Muddled mint, simple syrup (1:1 sugar to water) and bourbon. I’m not sure of the exact proportions – Matt??
Brenda says
You should give the Alton Brown method a try- muddle the mint WITH sugar until it forms a paste. That way when you add the whiskey and seltzer/water it doesn’t just have huge pieces of mint floating around. They are so refreshing in the warmer months! Yum.
KathEats says
Brilliant!
Liz says
Mazen is the cutiest baby ever!
Lisa @bitesforbabies says
Great pics..I especially like the one of the flowers in the vase with Mazen in his high chair in the background! Very artsy 😉

Alyssa @ Road to RD says
Mazen is getting so big! No less adorable though!
Miss Polkadot says
Not just saying this but: Mazen seems to get cuter and cuter by the day, or, well, by the post :). Even more so with the bowtie.
Miranda @ Cracked Up Chicken says
Do you massage the kale for you kale salads? Mine always seems tough. Maybe I don’t massage enough??
KathEats says
Yes – an acid like lime juice and some salt will help
Jessica Locke says
Those No Bull burgers always look so good! Wish they woud trickle down to Florida!
KathEats says
They can via UPS : )
Karen says
Love Mazen’s cute little toothies ! Can’t wait to hear about him crawling across the porch by the 4th of July, I’m guessing !
Jennifer says
The pictures of your family are so adorable. I just had a baby three months ago and I love looking at pictures of other’s little ones. It’s inspiring to hear how active you are even with a family to take care of. In addition, you also make time to prepare tasty meals. Thanks for setting a great example, I have gotten some inspiration after reading this post.
Kristi says
So did you leave before Mazen’s bedtime? We’d love to go to some summer concerts at the amphitheater across the street but they don’t start till around bedtime!! Don’t know how bad it would mess up his schedule…
KathEats says
Yeah, but he goes to bed at 8 so we had more time.
Rebecca says
Hi Kath! I love all the spring and summer foods we have to look forward to over the next few months, don’t you? I have a cooking question for you, since you’re so good at combining foods and flavors in ways I would never think of and you have a knack for making food prep easy! I really love crockpot cooking, but I have yet to figure out how I can use my trusty crock in spring and summertime to take advantage of all the seasonal foods available. Do you have any good ideas for summertime crockpot dishes I could try? Thanks in advance (because I KNOW you’ll come up with something great!!!!1!!)
KathEats says
Hmmm…you are kind but I’m a bit stumped! What about a risotto with asparagus and maybe peas too? (I think I want to make this now!) http://kidscooking.about.com/od/ricerecipes/r/crockpot-risotto-asparagus.htm
Lisa says
Yummmm love the salads Kath! So looking forward to the recipe! Til then take care Lisa
Deb @ Dietitian Debbie Dishes says
