We spent last Friday night and most of Saturday in Richmond! Here’s the recap.
Thomas’s Aunt Layton lives in Richmond and offered to host the boys for a night while we had parents’ night out at a hotel. Of course we jumped on the offer. Layton and her partner John had lots of activities and delicious food planned. They roasted s’mores on the fire pit and played with Layton’s yoga studio in her basement. The boys had a wonderful visit.
While they were with Layton and John, Thomas and I spent the night at the Quirk Hotel!
I’d been to the Richmond Quirk for lunch before and done at Staycation at the Charlottesville location, but I’d never stayed at this property. It’s seriously one of the cutest hotel lobbies there is!
Perks with Capital One Venture X
I booked our stay with my Venture X card, which is my favorite travel card. I had a $300 travel credit with this card and some points to cancel out the $50 balance, so our stay was no cost to us. PLUS, since it’s a Lifestyle Collection hotel with Capital One, we were upgraded to a suite and given $90 of on-site credits to put towards drinks and breakfast! I didn’t realize we had these perks and we used them enthusiastically. Read more about the Venture X benefits here.
Our Loft
Our loft was spacious and very cool.
Dinner at Chez Foushee
After we changed for dinner we walked 2 blocks to Chez Foushee.
The ambiance was upscale and vintage such that I felt like we had stepped into France.
We had a couple of cocktails while we listened to a live saxophonist. Mine was Rye Whiskey and Thyme. I loved it!
We shared fried oysters and french bread to start.
I loved my crab cake with crispy potatoes and asparagus. Thomas had a shrimp spring risotto that he loved.
After Dinner Drinks
We got back to the Quirk around 8 and didn’t want to go to bed, so we ended up using our hotel credits on a round of drinks! I had an Old Fashioned and Thomas an Espresso Martini. They were perfection and the bar ambiance was just what we wanted.
Quirk Hotel Breakfast
We enjoyed Blanchards coffee (and appreciated the free refills!) from the lobby and ordered breakfast with the rest of our credit.
I had the Hearty & Healthy with a Greek yogurt parfait and avocado toast plus a side salad. Thomas had poached eggs over biscuit with gravy.
Science Museum of Richmond
After we reunited with the boys, we went to the Science Museum of Virginia. I was especially excited for the planetarium. It was the perfect chilly, rainy day activity.
The boys loved the speed exhibits, and we saw the creepy bugs and snakes.
The highlight for me was The Dome where we saw a large screen film about astronauts training underwater for space walks. Afterwards we had an astronomy lesson. It was very good (but could have used more space music!)
I couldn’t resist getting some astronaut ice cream to share around afterwards.
We said goodbye to Layton and John and headed back to Cville for the rest of the weekend.

Wow what a great weekend! Now I’m looking forward to visiting the Adler Planetarium here in Chicago this summer. Chicago is a fabulous city. I hope you and the family will come visit sometime soon.
