We had a great time with our visitors this weekend!!
I didn’t touch my DSLR all weekend, but here are the highlights from my phone!
Friday night pizza party!! We ordered from Belmont and made salads on the side.
Saturday we packed in a full day for Mazen – visits to the Discovery Museum, toy store and bakery.
For lunch we hit up Bodos where I had this delicious smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel. I have big honkin’ bagels like this only a few times a year, and they are so good! Next time I should add a leaf of lettuce for a bit more nutrition : ) But my bagel was whole wheat!
Saturday night we had grand plans to go to World of Beer. My dad won a gift certificate when we went to Homebrew For Hunger last year. Mazen, however, after skipping his nap, was totally melting down. We just couldn’t see taking a toddler there, so mom and I stayed back with him and put him to bed early, and Kanz and dad went on to the restaurant, had a glorious time, and brought us back our dinners. We were more than happy with the room service.
Mom and I opened a bottle of Thomas George Estates wine from Sonoma while we chilled at home.
The food was worth the wait! I had grilled salmon, delicious potatoes with crispy pork and succotash.
Breakfast the next morning was fresh fruit and a few bagels we brought home from Bodos. I have started eating mango like I eat watermelon – bite off the “rind.” A trick I brought home from the DR!
We hung out in our jammies most of the morning and got a head start on Sunday chores. Lunch was leftover flatbread the guys brought back from WOB the night before, salad and cheese. Marcona almonds on the salad – so buttery!
We love our visits from G+P and hope they come back soon!! Mazen especially : )
Happy 26th!

Looks like fun! I, too, love fresh mango so much! Since it isn’t in season, I’m snacking a lot on the dried organic mango from Trader Joes which is pretty good.

Great weekend! But really, any weekend involving pizza is AMAZING.

Pizza from Belmont?! I’ve never tried it! Do you recommend it over other local pizza places?
KathEats says
It’s our favorite for delivery. Also love Christians, Vita Nova, Dr. Hos, Brixx and Fry’s Spring. Haven’t tried Lampo yet!

Looks like a delicious weekend! I love Bodos bagels! 🙂 If you ever travel to Harrisonburg, check out Mr. J’s bagels. They were a Saturday morning staple when I was in undergrad + grad school at JMU. 🙂

Looks like a wonderful weekend! I was wondering, since you said you’re enjoying your Vitamix, if you’d do a post on how to make smoothies (or healthy vita blasts). I’d be interested to hear how I could make some nutritional ones combining fruit, veggies, and protein. Do you ever use a protein powder in yours? If so, which ones do you recommend? And which ones have too many additives in them? I’ve never used a protein powder, but would like to. I’ve looked at them in the store, but I’m confused as to what kind to buy. They’re expensive!
KathEats says
Hi Donna, my smoothies usually have a mix of: frozen or fresh fruit, milk (real milk with protein in it), banana (for blendability), Greek yogurt (for protein) and sometimes oats (for staying energy) and peanut butter (for healthy fat). The amounts depend on if my smoothie is a snack or a meal (breakfast), but I almost always use a combination of those components. I don’t often use protein powders because they are expensive and I’d rather get my protein from real food, but if you want to use one (and I do from time to time) get either Tera’s Whey, which is made from grass-fed cows, or a pea/rice protein one, such as Vega brand.
Dana says
Craving that lox bagel right now!!!
Donna says
Thanks for the info on the smoothies! I usually put Greek yogurt in mine (for protein), but wondered if the protein powder would give the smoothie more staying power. I’m lactose intolerant so I can’t include milk (but I tolerate Greek yogurt) and usually combine that with frozen fruit. I just don’t want to get bored with the same combinations. I think I’ll try the oats in it too! I can’t imagine what that tastes like, but I’m willing to try it (at least once!)
KathEats says
The oats give it a nice doughy taste! If you are lactose intolerant, then one of the plant proteins might be a good addition. You can also add tofu!
Donna says
Thanks, Kath. When you say plant protein, are you referring to tofu? Or something else?
KathEats says
I mean protein powders made from whole pea, bean or rice protein verses isolated proteins.
Donna says
Wow, I wasn’t aware there were such things! I need to look into this. Thanks for the suggestions.

That mango looks delicious. With my first pregnancy I CRAVED mango like no ones business and bought them by the box. All was well until I broke out in crazy hives. Apparently the oil on mango skin is similar to poison oak? I’m pregnant again and am wanting mango but too terrified to try it!
KathEats says
I have heard that too! The skin makes my lips tingle a bit.
Kate says
I have that mango allergy! I used to love to pretend I was an islander and chomp directly on the fruit with my mouth and face, and then the next day I’d have a rash on my mouth and be like “whuh??” Then I finally ready about the poisonous oil and put two and two together. I can happily eat mango as long as someone else deals with the skin/cutting board/etc.

That does look like a fun weekend! You have me craving pizza now, too!
