This weekend we wrapped up our vacation and made our way back to Cville in a couple of steps. I don’t have much to report other than some sad cell phone photos!
From Bald Head we drove to Hillsborough where Mazen and I spent the night so we could have a chance to hang out with Larbs and Matt, who were visiting for a wedding.
We all headed to downtown Durham for dinner on Friday night.
We tried to go to Bull City Burger, but it was too crowded and loud, so instead we went to Tyler’s Taproom. I had fried pickles, a beer, a salad and fish and chips that hit the spot. (A lot of this was shared!)
Saturday morning we woke up and ate oatmeal!
PB&J time
After digesting, we went running on Hillsborough’s new trail along the Eno River. We covered about 3 miles or so and had a good time talking.
After quick showers, we walked back downtown for salads at Weaver Street Market. Mine was piled high with vegetables (I feel like I have a lot of veggie eating to do this week!) and I shared a kombucha with Larbs.
Mazen and I road-tripped back to Cville where we were greeted by our BFFs Sarah and Sylvia! The kiddos played in the yard while I frantically unpacked from our trip and made dinner while chatting with Sarah. We eventually pulled 2 huge sheet pans of sweet potato fries out of the oven – mixed in with some parsnip fries! – and had them along with No Bull Burgers.
Sunday morning I made us all apple pancakes!
The Sayas went home, and Maze and I went grocery shopping for the week and tidied up a bit.
And then we headed out into the country to see Sarah’s new house! They have renovated a house but have yet to move in. The house came with a killer pool that was just prepped for human swimming!
We splashed around and enjoyed burgers on the grill and simple salads.
The rest of the weekend was spent catching up on house work and prepping for the week ahead. Happy Summah!
PS. My camera is fine!!! The lens, however, is not. Thankfully I have a backup. Can’t wait to get back to some happy snapping. Although I have to say only using my phone for a week was pretty awesome : )

Looks like you had a great vacation and welcome home! Must make those apple pancakes!
Kaila @healthyhelperblog! says
Like mother, like son! Looks like we have another oatmeal lover on our hands! LOL 🙂
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out says
Fried pickles are my favorite!! I can’t resist getting them at a good burger joint!
Sally says
I love Weaver Street Market! I’ve went a few times while visiting a friend at UNC. I always feel like I could spend hours wandering around.
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
The nice thing about the phone camera is that it’s nice and convenient to carry around. That’s actually why I haven’t invested in a bigger camera…I have a feeling I just wouldn’t feel like carrying it around with me ever. LOL
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Those apple pancakes look so good – I loooove cooked apples! Our Whole Foods this weekend had this apple, raisin, walnut dish in the hotbar section that was delicious!
Shel@PeachyPalate says
I wouldn’t have even known they were cell phone photos!!! Is Mazen a nut butter fan? No Bull Burgers really do seem like the handiest thing ever! Great that you were straight home to a fun visitor! Makes coming home so much easier!
Sophie says
Mazen looks so grown up! It’s funny because at first you can see Matt, but then I see you in him too!
It looks like you had a lovely weekend!
Katie says
My husband came yesterday from a weekend with the guys and said that he discovered the deliciousness of fried pickles. I tried them this spring when my sister ordered them for the table when we were out for lunch. Mazen is so cute! His face, hair, smile and expressions remind me a lot of my son at that age.
Leah (goodnight cheese) says
Those pictures look pretty good to me! Have you considered just using that instead of lugging around a camera? I remember when you reviewed your phone and talked about how much you loved the camera.
KathEats says
Yes I almost always use it in public now. But people and food do look best with a dslr
Kimberly says
I agree that the pics look just as good with the cell phone camera! It’s crazy how good those cameras are now. Very clear pictures.
Leah (goodnight cheese) says
Wait, so does that mean you’re going to keep using the camera or stick to the phone?
Vanessa says
Oh my gosh his smile in the grocery cart – too much to handle! It looks like an awesome weekend.
Chelsea@TableForOne says
Looks like some fun road-trippin! All those burgers look delicious too. It’s only 9:30am, and now I want one!
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
That pool looks awesome!!!
Hannah @ eat, drink, and save money says
Happy to hear your camera is fine! Do you have any good advice for picking out a camera bag? Mine is ripping and I’d like a better one that can carry mine plus 2 lenses. How do you cart yours around? I’m too nervous to throw it in my purse with baby snacks and liquids!
KathEats says
I used to have a padded back, but that’s not practical when I have a diaper bag too. My diaper bag actually has a good pocket for the camera (on the other side as the snacks), but more often than not I leave my camera at home. When I travel I put it in a little camera-size padded bag and put that in my tote bag with wallet and things. Point of the story: there is no good way : )
Tiffany says
Actually, I got a pretty cute cover from camera coats! They run Facebook deals often and I can stick it in another bag!
KathEats says
Just looked them up. .. so cute! How well padded are they?
Karen says
Kath – For what it’s worth, I actually love this collection of photos…maybe more than those taken w/your camera. They look really sharp to my untrained eye!
KathEats says
🙂
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves says
So much fun! I haven’t had PB&J oats in forever, but now you put the idea back in my head.. 😉
And I agree that it’s pretty nice just using my phone as my camera!
Emily @ Life on Food says
Mazen’s little chair at the end is so cute. Where is it from?
KathEats says
It is our friend’s – probably Target!
joelle (on a pink typewriter) says
That is one excited face for a bowl of oats! I can relate. 😉
Erin says
I had the exact same oats for breakfast. So good!
Kath – I’m a relatively new follower to your blog and love the content and healthy eating inspiration!
KathEats says
Thank you and welcome Erin!!
Nichole says
Wow, I was just at Bull City Burger on Saturday, you really must go if you get a chance! Also, if you have a sweet tooth, Monuts right across from them has pretty awesome, interesting doughnuts 🙂 You cannot forget Fullsteam Brewery right up the street either.
Laura says
I was at BCB on Sunday, so yummy! Especially their Corcoran cooler, it’s my fav summer drink!
Karen says
Is Maze wearing new babyaviators?
KathEats says
Not here but they just came in mail!
Alex @ True Femme says
I’ve never had fried pickles before but I really want to try them! And the apple pancakes look so good! I’m sad that summer is almost over but I guess that means apple and pumpkin items aren’t too far away!
Jeri says
I never thought about adding jelly to oatmeal. Someone gave me a jar of home made carrot cake jam and a jar of blackberry peach. Since I only eat bread on the weekends, I wasn’t eating it up. Now I have more reason to enjoy these homemade gifts
