This weekend we went to Primland Resort in Meadows of Dan, Virginia, to celebrate Thomas’s best friend’s 40th birthday. Here is the recap!
Primland Resort has been on our bucket list for a long time. But we needed a really special reason to go. That reason was Kyle’s 40th!
Thomas and Kyle have been best friends since 9th grade. So when Kyle’s wife Carly suggested a group of friends join them for a weekend at Primland, we were so in!
Primland Resort: Our Weekend Escape
Primland is a 12,000-acre luxury mountain estate that is part of Auberge Resorts. It was definitely one of the nicest – if not THE nicest – resort we’ve visited.
The service was impeccable – everyone was so friendly. The resort is on the small side with only 30 rooms, so there was a very lovely intimate feel. It’s a wonderful place to come for a couples’ weekend, and an ideal spot for a small group like ours.
The grounds are stunning with gorgeous views – you are up on a mountaintop! The lodge sits at the very top. I can only imagine how beautiful it is in the peak of fall foliage!
Get Good Directions Before You Go
Primland is in Meadows of Dan, Virginia, about a 3.5-hour drive from Charlottesville. Unfortunately it took us more like 4.5 hours to get there because we got VERY LOST. Google Maps directed us to a dot in the middle of the 12,000 acre property and we found ourselves on a dusty one-lane path (I hesitate to call it a road) with no cell service. Luckily we turned back and called for help once we were back in range.
When we pulled into the gate we joked that we felt a little like we were in an M. Night Shyamalan movie. We were about to be hunted!?
The lodge is 4-5 miles from the gate, so even once you’re on the property, you still have a long drive until you get there.
Activities At Primland
There is a beautiful golf course, a full spa, multiple restaurants, trails, fishing, horseback riding, ATVs, skeet shooting, an observatory and more.
I was happy to relax in the spa and pool and lobby with the ladies. Check out the pool!
The men golfed both days! Kyle and Thomas are avid golfers and this birthday trip had to have a strong golf component.
Our Room
The Lodge is the main house where our room was, but there are also cottages and treehouses you can stay in. We went with the most basic Mountain Room, which was above and beyond beautiful!!
The bathroom was impressive, the bed plush, and the automatic lights and blinds were great. The room was also well-stocked with a mini fridge, complimentary snacks and drinks, and cozy robes and slippers.
Our friends got a suite – it was impressive!!
Lunch at 19th Hole Pub
Thomas and the guys went out golfing as soon as we arrived, and the other ladies were in the spa, so I took myself to the pub for lunch.
I had the best kale Caesar and delicious truffle deviled eggs!
Fireplace Chat with the Girls
Primland is pet-friendly!
Dinner at Stables
On Friday night we took a shuttle down to Stables for a family-style dinner.
The rustic atmosphere was fun, and there was a band playing bluegrass cover songs!
We started our meal with salads with homemade ranch and toasty breadcrumbs.
And then we shared this board for dinner. I think Primland is taking charcuterie boards to a whole new level!! The board included: fried chicken, grilled fish, brisket, and ribs plus creamed corn, mac and cheese, green beans, brussels sprouts, cornbread, and rolls.
When they first set it down we were thinking we’d need a second board for the table, but we couldn’t even finish the first!! It was delicious and filling. A smaller dessert board followed while we sang HBD to Kyle!
When we got back to the resort, we put on our bathing suits and robes and headed to the pool + hot tub! Lots of laughs were shared.
Breakfast at Elements
We met for breakfast at 8:30 on Saturday. Loved the fresh coconut pineapple juices, and I had this towering bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit!
We had some donuts for the table to share – the middle spread was maple and my favorite.
Saturday Activities
While we were lucky with sunny skies, the temps were back down to freezing. Saturday’s high was in the low 40s and you could hear the wind from the inside. I think it even snowed a few times! Poor cold boys. The weather was no problem for the spa ladies, but the golfers were not too happy!
The spa was amazing
The spa was expansive and nice. I went early to use the steam room and hot tub before a facial! My treatment was great, and I spent some time in the relaxation room after with a mimosa!
Light Lunch
I had a salad for lunch and then met everyone at the pool for the afternoon.
Happy Hour
Happy bday to Kyle!
Wine Cellar Dinner
For the birthday night, we did a private dinner in the wine cellar. What a special occasion!! It was intimate (how many times can I use that word?!) and the perfect setting for us to tell stories about Kyle.
Toast
We started with a special wine toast.
Salad Course
The meal began with a plated salad of beets, strawberries, and chevre. Totally loved this combo.
The Main Course
Chef Zack brought out a board of smoked and grilled meats – duck, lamb, chicken, and salmon – plus mashed potatoes, cheese grits, asparagus, and brussels.
Everything was INcredible. Everyone raved about the duck and grits!
Dessert
Dessert was a blueberry galette with scoops of French vanilla ice cream. Out of this world!
Farewell Breakfast
We gathered back in the restaurant in the morning for a final breakfast. Skillet pancake, eggs, biscuits, and a few mimosas for the party people.
Add Primland to your travel bucket list!
This weekend was amazing for so many reasons: because we haven’t had much time with friends the past two years, because Primland was such an awesome resort, and because it was a great weekend all around.

Looks like an amazing place and a fun weekend!! Did the guys plan their outfits or was the coordinating a total coincidence!?
Kath Younger says
Coincidence! Although one might have said “blazer and jeans” to inspire the rest.

Your story of getting lost reminded me of our honeymoon! We were heading to the Smoky Mountains and booked a B and B in West Virginia on the way. The MapQuest directions (10 years ago lol) brought us to a dark empty road with no sign of the place… we finally turned into an old estate, complete with an old library on the back where we could see an old lady rocking in the lamplight and ended up getting chased by a crazy man who came out of nowhere waving a gun and telling us to get out of our car. When we finally found our B and B the owner told us with a big grin, “no locks on the doors here…everyone is friendly in this town!”
Kath Younger says
Omg!!! So scary!!!

We have booked 4 days at Primland for ourselves and family this July. Do you think there is enough to do with a 3 and 4 year old? We all love to hike and enjoy outdoor activities. They also love a pool so I figure that will be something we can do as well.
Kath Younger says
Yes! Lots to do it will just cost extra for the activities that are equipment based.
