This was one of those weekends where we squeezed something into every second!! I’m sad it’s over!
Friday we stayed home and saved our energy. We used to have such fun on Fridays but lately it’s been our calm-before-the-storm day to just have a simple dinner at home. It doesn’t help that Matt often goes into work for a few hours every Saturday morning, so it doesn’t really feel like the weekend has started yet.
We had our final Cook Smarts meal of the week – a turkey + veggie rice dish.
Saturday morning I had a light breakfast in anticipation of a run, visit the City Market and brunch. Banana + Barney Butter.
The Cville Marathon was going on, so I chose a route that would take us beside (but not interfering with) the runners. I ran on the sidewalk, and Mazen and I cheered them on as I covered about 3.5 miles myself.
We ended at the market – first one of the year – yay!
Our first stop was to the busy Great Harvest tent to say hi to Natalie…(where I also met a blog reader!)
I bought a sweet potato scone for us to share {Jamberry Nails for spring!}
We walked home (making my total mileage 4.5 – nice!) and played around a bit before brunch at our neighbors!
Happy Birthday John!
Christine and John had quite the spread – I love the idea of a birthday brunch (that lasted well into the afternoon!)
They had mimosas, a Bloody Mary bar…
…and a keg of local IPA. Thumbs up for beer!
I had a couple of mimosas – I can’t really do vodka or beer before noon!
To eat they had beautiful fruit, egg casseroles..
…and a crockpot of apple cinnamon oatmeal!
Both Mazen and I loved the oatmeal : )
There were lots of kiddos in attendance, and J + C set up this cute tent out of a card table and cover
If I were just a little bit more confident on the sewing machine I would totally make one of these! So clever.
M loved it!
Rosy Cheek Update: THE LAST MOLAR IS HALFWAY IN!! He has gotten 8 new teeth in the last 2 months. SO stoked we’re almost done (except for the 2 year old molars).
Later that afternoon I headed to a baby shower for my friend Gina!
She’s having a little boy in just a few more weeks!
We chatted about labor, babies and cute boy clothes over cupcakes, cookies, fruit dip and coffee.
The boys had a great time playing at the park while I was gone. Mazen sure is getting plenty of fresh air now that spring is here! ‘Bout time.
The same brunch neighbors have a little girl and we have started trading babysitting since our houses are so close. This was our night to go out, so Matt and I went to Ten, a modern Japanese restaurant downtown. We’ve been trying to go here for years but it’s always packed! We took seats at the bar and had a great dinner.
Sivas-Sonoma Old Vine Zin – YUM!
The Spicy Toro roll, tempura shrimp and tuna + avocado rice bowl. Super delicious!!
We wrapped up the weekend with the usual Sunday activities:
Breakfast // groceries // meal prep // laundry // cleaning // soccer game (we tied!) // playtime // dinner
Hope you had a great weekend as well!

What a fun weekend! looks awesome!

What a fun spring weekend. LOVE the first and last pictures of you and Mazen and the ones of him with Matt – treasure those sweet moments! I miss my kids being that age. Did the teething bother Mazen much? It didn’t bother my kids much, my son a little bit more because he had ear infection and then tonsil/adenoid problems. The trading babysitting is such a great idea, one that we have never done. Although now that my sister has moved to town, we are able to “trade babysitting” although it doesn’t seem quite like “babysitting” when it is my niece. Hope you have a wonderful week!
KathEats says
It actually doesn’t seem to bother him too much. .. just the cheeks!

Can’t believe the market is already starting up! That makes me excited for summer and for our own farmers market to get under way!! Jam packed weekends really are the best! 🙂

what a weekend! And I love the idea of setting up a bloody mary bar – anything interactive (and involving alcohol…) sounds like fun to me!
Leslee @ Her Happy Balance says
Wow, you really did have a bustling weekend! Brunch is quickly becoming one my favorite meals and ways to celebrate with friends. I’m a big fan of spicy bloody Mary’s with horseradish, celery salt, tabasco and fun garnishes 🙂

My girl Nia is a little behind in age than M and I find the teeth coming in is never ending!!! I seriously hope it’s the reason she chooses to get up 1-3x a night lately. Let’s just say, I love caffeine lately haha. Sounds like a busy, but good weekend. Can’t wait for the farmers’ market to start up here in Ontario next month!

Sounds like a great family weekend! Baseball season has started here for 3 of my 4 boys and I love it. I also got the sports gear in the garage organized ( it was a mess). That felt great!

Kath….quick note about jamberry….used to sell it myself and stopped when I realized how toxic they are. I had several clients complain about pain and brittleness…
They are made from pvc which if u look up about is a hormone disruptor and is not healthy at all to wear….they get away with saying its non toxic b/c of no chemicals but it shouldn’t be worn on the body at all. I am just looking out for u as I”ve seen u wear them before..
They are so cute tho :0)
KathEats says
Hmmm I hadn’t given it that much thought to be honest. I will consider wearing them more sparingly. Thanks for the head’s up
Darlene says
What is jamberry?
KathEats says
It’s the nail wraps I’m wearing in the scone photo

So busy! I’m jealous that you can walk/ run to your market. I wish we lived in an area more conducive to walking.

LOVE market time of year! I went to my first one of the year on Sunday, sun was shining, it was 19 degrees and it felt like summer! Also just tried Shrimp for the first time EVER; never thought I would having been vegan for the past 6 years but I loved em!

I am putting the idea of birthday brunch on the back burner for future parties! Such a good idea.
Heidi says
My baby is a major drooler too, and I fixed the irritated cheeks thing by putting a bath towel on his crib mattress every time he sleeps and naps. It seems to soak up the liquid better than a sheet alone. (I tuck it into the sides of the mattress and make sure his face is on it. His were really red without it.
KathEats says
I think that is what is happening with us too for various reasons. Thanks for the tip!
Ali says
What a nice weekend! We were in the hospital with croup with our 13 month old, so that wasn’t very much fun.
KathEats says
Oh no. Just read your post – that sounds so scary. Glad he’s OK!

It was so nice to meet you on Saturday at the market. We had a lovely weekend in C’ville and enjoyed treats and take home loaves from the bakery. You did have a jam packed weekend, but everything looked fun! Mazen is so cute!!

That was a beautiful weekend Kath! I watched the sunrise on Oahu for my 28th birthday and attended a luau! I had no idea a decade ago that this gal from Ohio would be livin the island life;)
KathEats says
Wow sounds amazing!!! I hope to get to Hawaii some time in my life
Jo says
What is the appetizer bite pictured that has cantaloupe on the bottom and grape tomato on top – what is in between? Looks yummy! Mazen eats more real food than most adults do! You are teaching him such good eating habits. I see so many kids that won’t eat anything except chicken nuggets and fries!
KathEats says
Cantaloupe, tomato and mozzarella.
And he barely are anything beyond the oatmeal! not always a great eater.
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves says
That last picture melts my heart ? Looks like you all had a blast this past weekend! Love that you got to spend so much time in the sunshine.
I wish I had a tent like that when I was a toddler! 😉
Patty says
Kath, I love your dress at the baby shower. Is that a Stitchfix find?
KathEats says
I bought it at a boutique here in town called Bittersweet. Thanks!
Ella says
KATH what a great idea with the babysitting swap! I stopped reading in the middle of this post to email my down-the-street neighbor who has a baby and a toddler just like us, to see if she might do this.
KathEats says
Haha awesome!
Jennie says
Great post kath! Seems that you and Matt go out to eat alot (simply observation) how do you budget for such an expense? Just curious as its a goal my husband and I are working towards 🙂
KathEats says
We have a monthly entertainment budget for going out and yes we go out more than we maybe should!
