After a long week of wedding festivities, we were happy to be home again and back to normal life.
Friday night was low key and indoors due to bad weather. Matt and I were glad to resume our Mad Men watching! We’re now on Season 4 and loving it.
Saturday morning we risked getting wet with a run + walk to the market. I try to run a mile or so the long way to the market to break at sweat before the rest of my workout is in the form of walking.
First stop is always to say hi to dada!
Second stop is to Shenandoah Joe’s for coffee. This week I got ICED!
Speaking of ice, check out the latest from Nugget’s Raw Kombucha! It was soooo fresh. Can’t wait to try more flavors and get a kombucha float sometime soon.
For breakfast I had fresh berries
And a local egg fried up by Babes In The Wood served on some Great Harvest bread.
Back home we baby proofed the house a bit for Mr. Crawl (love/hating on the new gate at the top of the stairs)
Motion courtesy of VINE – the latest social media in motion! {Click to play if it doesn’t automatically start}
And to keep some fun in the weekend, we strolled downtown for cocktails
Glass Haus Kitchen has some AMAZING hand-crafted options. I asked the bartender to surprise me with something based on bourbon and this was muddled strawberries, Art of the Age Rhuby (rhubarb, cardamom, vanilla and coriander), Verjus blanc and bourbon.
We came home for dinner (that’s life with a baby) and had an awesome local trout I bought at the market pan-seared with some garlic scape and butter.
Served with kale salad from our garden and corn on the cob
Sunday morning breakfast!! Eggs, fruit extravaganza, toast with Wild Friends PB
Sunday I went to the gym, did lots of laundry, and went to see The Great Gatsby with Karen! Loved it like I loved Moulin Rouge.
Sunday night Shanna and Mike invited us to our house for a BBQ! Man I miss that porch.
We had turkey burgers, kale salad, pasta salad and lots of fruit.
Happy Weekend!

I need to find a farmers market to go to, that looks like such an enjoyable way to spend a morning. Also, I’m digging your use of vine on here! I didn’t know you could upload them to blogs and it adds a nice element.

Love all the videos….so cute! I passed a great harvest this past weekend in Greensboro. I hope one day I’ll have the chance to come by Charlottesville!
Anele @ Success Along the Weigh says

Liz says
Mazen in action. Can’t get cutier than that!
Amanda M says
I’m on MadMen season 4 too. Almost done with it, but it’s good!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
How fun! Loved the video action!
Molly @ RDexposed says
Love porches! That might be the thing I dislike the most about living in an apt!
Also, Mazen is getting cuter by the day!
Evelyn says
what is garlic scape?
Sooooo your friends bbq’d for you at your own home? Awesome!!
Ali @ Peaches and Football says
Ha – babies crawling around are so adorable. He’s at a great stage now too. 🙂 I haven’t seen Great Gatsby yet but I loved Moulin Rouge so I need to add it to my list of summer movies to watch. By the way, I can smell those raspberries through my computer screen. They look wonderful!
Karen says
Those vine videos of Mazen are so funny…loved seeing the little guy in motion! My fav. was broccoli boy – hysterical, esp. entrancing b/c the continuous looping aspect of the videos!
Great progress on the Mad Men viewing! 🙂
rosie says
We had the same idea on Saturday afternoon! Hauled Linden up to Skybar for a drink, then had an early dinner at Whiskey Jar. We should have called you guys!

Darn!
sara @ fitcupcaker says
I love love gelato, but kambucha flavor, the would be a first for me!
Nicole says
Such a lovely, relaxing weekend! I tried some of my dad’s baked trout the other day, could not get myself to like the flavor… Maybe pan-searing it will make it taste better? Or maybe it’s just the fish in itself 😉
Lauren @ The Highlands Life says
We know how the restaurant dining days are seldom. I’d much rather enjoy my meal at home then try and keeps squirmy baby content so close to bath and night time sleep. Ghats y’all were able to grab a quick cocktail though!
Hillary | Nutrition Nut on the Run says
M’s rosy cheeks are too cute. & Vine, that’s fun! I haven’t joined on that social media bandwagon just yet.
jessica says
Where do you get Mazens adorable outfits? I love the stripes! My son is 11 weeks and I have a hard time finding boy clothes without goofy sayings on them.
KathEats says
Old Navy, Gap and Carter’s Outlet are our favs
jessica says
Thanks! I thought I spotted an Old Navy polo:) I will have to check out Carters’ Outlet
Maria Tadic says
I love the addition of the videos! Especially the one with Mazen crawling – good luck!
Emily @ Life on Food says
Your weekend posts not on the weekend always make me happy and sad. Sad that is not the week now. Happy to start thinking/dreaming about what I want to do during the coming weekend.
Alex says
I like the videos! You should do those more often.

I notice that you’ve been doing a lot of kale salads lately, and I’m wondering how you make them. Whenever I try to make them, they are just too bitter. Do you have any suggestions for kale salads? Or any trick you use to cut down on the bitter taste?
KathEats says
We do them massaged-style. Starting with clean, chopped kale, we massage in a mix of lime juice, olive oil and salt often with a touch of balsamic. Sometimes I just use the Garlic Gold Lemon Vinaigrette. Just keep massaging until it’s “cooked.” Letting it sit longer will help too. I honestly don’t find kale to be that bitter compared to other greens, but I do think the dressing helps a lot.
Susan H @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
Oh, I would love to have a front porch…luckily, we have the back deck to sit out and enjoy the garden. Great reminder for me to check out our local market next week. 🙂
Faith says
I was in a momentary time warp when I saw the picture of your old porch! Had many great dinners out there.
Ana says
Hi Kath
First of all, Mazen is the cutest baby around!
Second, I am looking for a recipe that I made from your blog for a cold Asian/Peanut Noodle Salad. It was a recipe one of your friends made for you and the recipe was posted on the comments. I made it at our house a couple times and today my son asked me to make again, but I cannot find that post… do you know where it is?
(I tried looking on your recipage but did not find the recipe there).
Thanks!
Ana
KathEats says
Is this it? Hillary’s cold sesame noodles?
Ana says
Yes!!! That is it Kath, thanks!!!
It will make a great dinner for these nights of hot weather 🙂

Shanna says

i’m glad to finally hear someone liked the great gatsby. i love his romeo + juliet, so i’m guessing i will, too.

I love the excitement on little M’s face as he’s crawling in that video – So cute!!
Amelia says
You look so pretty in purple!
Love your updates and posts lately. I have been in my last two weeks of electives of my DI and so busy that I have only been able to read but not comment. Busy=good. Larbs wedding photos were gorgeous!!! Love the cake. Mazen is more handsome by the day too. 🙂
Alyssa says
Looks wonderful!! So relaxing and delicious 🙂
Lindsey @ Pas de Deux says
What a fun weekend! Sarah and I seriously must have just missed you at the market–and we made almost all of the same stops–though the raspberries were gone by the time I got there. I think I might have to try the kombucha float this weekend!
robin says
awww hes crawlin:) All the food looks wonderful and so do the drinks!
Cait's Plate says
Looks like a perfect weekend! Can’t believe how big Mazen is getting!
I love your sunglasses – do you mind my asking what brand they are? I just lost mine while kayaking in Charleston (sank right into the water!) and have been looking for some new ones 🙂
KathEats says
Thanks! I have no idea where they are from actually. They are my junk pair that live in my stroller! 🙂
Cool story: the most expensive sunglasses I ever bought were about $50. I wore them in a lake and of course they sank to the bottom when I got splashed swimming off of a boat. I bought a new pair on eBay and when I messaged the seller after paying for them she told me that they had been found on the bottom of a river – she is a diver who picks up brand-name things from bodies of water! Sadly I lost those too sometime later so I only buy cheap sunglasses now. Although my friends Seamane and Rob are always getting on me to get some better pairs : )
Cait's Plate says
HAHA! Oh my gosh that really is too funny! I wish that would happen with mine! I couldn’t believe how quickly they sunk to the bottom. I literally grabbed for them as soon as I heard them hit the water and they had already gone down!
Thank you for the brand suggestions I will definitely check them out…though I’m thinking your route of only buying the cheap ones might be the way I go too! 🙂
Kristi says
Is Mazen using his paci again? For some reason I thought you got rid of it, cold turkey, but maybe that was just for sleeping? I’m just holding out for the day my boy can put his paci back in at night! Still waiting for that… 😉
KathEats says
Haha it’s a toy now! I left it in there and he plays with it.
Brittnie (A Joy Renewed) says
He’s crawling so well! Cutie! Clara is sooooo close to crawling. Sigh. Almost there :). I was hoping she would crawl by 12 months but no luck. Hoping now by 15 months!
And I totally get the going home for dinner. . . it’s just easier with a baby. And when we do go out to dinner, we go at like 5pm. So wild and crazy, right?
Karen says
Some great pictures there and I LOVE the crawling video! He has style!
I have my sunglasses on a string that goes around my neck! It may not be cool but it saves a lot of lost sunglasses!
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
That trout was AMAZING. I’m super excited that I still have another fillet in the fridge waiting to be turned into a fish salad of some sort. [And I’m super excited that I’m not really vegan anymore…]
Lindsay says
That does seem like a wonderful weekend, Mazen is such a charmer. All the bbqs you are always having with friends makes me long for our family and friends to live closer, but Alas, the have to come visit us in Hawaii;) Oh darn! Hoping to get our grill up and running this weekend, and can’t wait to start potting plants for some fresh produce of our own!
Tina says
It’s almost midnight but the food in this post is seriously making my mouth water! That kale salad specifically! I’ve got some curly kale going NUTS in the garden and I’ve been trying to think of what beyond juicing and kale chips to do with it. I think I’ll have to make a fresh salad with some of the harvest!
