I am blasting some old One Direction tunes as I write to you! I love their new album, but their older songs are so youthful that you can’t help but feel happy listening to them. I hate that I missed out on a chance to see them in person (You should have seen how jealous I was when my high-school-aged cousin Natalie said she’d seen them! Ha!) I also missed the Charlie Puth concert in DC this weekend – and I would have loved to go to that. However, I am going to see Maroon 5 in September! But that’s a long ways away.
Enjoyed the above cocktail-hour cheese, crackers and vino with Sarah and her mom on Saturday!
Matt and I are still playing our time with Mazen by ear. For the most part, he’s is pretty busy during the week with work and generally freer on the weekends, so he had Mazen on Friday afternoon, Saturday afternoon and evening, and Sunday. It’s such a strange change to go from Mazen sleeping in my house 100% of the time to staying here alone a few nights a week. While I do miss him and his energy, it has actually been really nice to have some alone time. Matt always has lots of fun activities scheduled too (hikes, swimming, pizza dinners) so Mazen enjoys the spilt time and the excitement it brings to go somewhere new for a day or so.
So on my free Friday afternoon, I met a friend for lunch at Lampo. I forgot how delicious this place is!! It’s all wood-fired pizzas and delicious Italian food.
Also bubbly on a warm and sunny afternoon!!
Rosemary spiced olives. Loved these!
Kale and Brussels sprouts salads. The kale salad was my favorite with spiced almonds, crispy parsnips, and raisins.
Prosciutto and lemon pizza! That crust!!
On Friday night Matt brought Mazen home and I made dinner for us. Pasta with spicy sausage, kale, shiitake mushrooms and a garlic-butter-wine sauce.
Saturday morning we had a brunch, so I just had a cappuccino for breakfast with a few bites of Mazen’s eggs.
And then enjoyed smoked salmon bagels, an egg casserole and juicy berries for brunch! Plus a mimosa…or two : )
This little man wanted to wear his “out to dinner shirt” and his “Christmas fancy pants.” Isn’t he cute?!
On Saturday afternoon I went to a class at Elements Hot Yoga! I’ll write a full post about the new studio this week : ) Love it though!
Saturday night was chilled. I had my Lampo leftovers for dinner and watched the rest of the show Betrayal on Vudu.
Drank this makeshift milk shake for dessert! I mixed two-thirds Breyers Mint Chocolate chip with one third milk and mashed it together with a spoon. It’s an old trick my friend Kirsten taught me in high school!
On Sunday morning I SLEPT IN and then made myself a big breakfast before a full day of soccer.
Cappuccino, scrambled eggs, toast with butter and jam and fresh organic strawberries.
All fueled up for my games!
What were the highlights of your weekend??!

He’s so cute in his little shirt!!! Spicy sausage and kale sounds like an epic combination!

My grandmother made milkshakes that way. It brings back memories of her whenever I do that too. 🙂

hi sweet Kath!
Highlight was seeing my college girl. Took her to lunch and we went to the cutest boutique and just got to hang out for a couple hours in her college town. LOVE HER SO MUCH.
I miss her when she is at school but the new normal happens quicker than you think. However you always think about your kiddo when they are not physically with you. It’s just a momma thing. 🙂
XOXO

I can’t believe she is in college!! xo

That Prosciutto and lemon pizza looks like it would be the highlight of my week if I ate such a thing…lol 🙂
Our weekend was spent up north visiting my mom & dad. Mom has just started hospice, so spending as much time up there with them is really important to me. Highlights included Papa taking my three year old to his first haircut at the barber shop! He looks so grown up now.

I am so sorry to hear of your mother. Best to you and your family.

What a lovely weekend complete with amazing food!

I made the Morning Glory muffins you posted! My 4.5 and 1.5 year old boys LOVED them! I put about 2 cups of carrots in, too… The batter looked so full of carrot that I was skeptical how they would turn out, but they were perfect! Felt good about giving such a healthy muffin to the little ones 🙂 this will become a regular recipe for us!

So glad!!!

So glad you and Matt are working out the details. 🙂
My weekend highlight included a 3 hour nap with hubs and my 7 year old who is still recouping from having her tonsils/adenoids out and tubes put in last Wednesday. My littlest daughter was just a thumping away in my belly – she turns 23 weeks today!!

This post reminds me that I need to get more hot yoga in my life!

The pasta you made looks absolutely delicious!

Highlight of my weekend was a friend visiting! We went to a pure barre class and ran the cherry blossom 5k and ate some delicious meals (both out and at home), as well as some delicious glasses of wine over an episode of scandal!

If I brought back some high school tricks it would be seeing how many starbucks venti fraps I could drink with unlimited amounts of extra caramel and panda express orange chicken…. then go to 4 hour practices… can I have that metabolism back so I can eat unlimited amounts of peanut butter?
Tina says
I just had a late breakfast but now I feel like I haven’t eaten in days because the food in this post has made me insanely hungry! I am particularly intrigued by lemon and prosciutto on a pie. I think I need to try that next time I make pizza! Also, Mazen looks ridiculously adorable in that outfit!
This weekend for me consisted of a lot of down town due to a pesky migraine that hasn’t quit. I did make some pretty yummy quesdillas and go on a bit of a shopping spree at Home Goods though so that was fun!

Highlight of my weekend was finding out my hubby surprised me with tickets to see duran duran this Tuesday, my favorite! (They are my One Direction lol)

Hahaha love how you phrased that! Have fun!

Heya! I have been thinking about getting a Breville smart toaster oven-I think I spy one at your place. Do you LOVE it? Or NO? I’m torn because I don’t just want another appliance just for fun-I want to use it. Never had a toaster oven before, not sure if I should just use my regular oven and keep it simple. Any thoughts would be appreciated–Thanks Kath!
KathEats says
LOVE IT! This is the one I have. From Bed, Bath and Beyond.
Susan says
We have a Breville toaster oven (the same one from Bed Bath and Beyond) and use it every day. It sure beats heating up the big oven, which makes the house hot, especially in summer (we live in NC.) The Breville can even fit a whole pizza! Well worth the $$$!

Wr went to Damascus, VA for the weekend and rode th VA creeper trail both days. On Saturday from Damascus almost to Abingdon and back for a total of 24 miles, and Sunday we shuttled up to White Top and rode down to Damascus for 18 miles. On the way home we stopped by Grayson Highlands State Park and hiked up to see the ponies. While cold, it was a beautiful weekend.
KathEats says
Love the VA Creeper trail! And you sure have some energy while going through chemo – hugs!

Figuring out custody is such a tricky thing and each family has to find what’s best for their children.
My friend has been doing this :
Monday-Tues-Wed Mom, Thurs-Fri Dad, Sat-Sun Mom. Then they switch around starting with the dad.
Monday-Tues-Wed Dad, Thurs-Fri Mom, Sat-Sun Dad.
So basically the child sees each parent every 2-3 days and spend every other weekend with each parent. This is possible only if both parent leaves less then 20-30 minutes apart. The switch parent during the week at day care (mom drops, dad picks up) and on weekend, drives to each other houses.
My custody agreement is much more different as the dad leaves 2 hours away. Every other weekend visitation in my home with dad, one week during christmas vacation at his dad, one week during summer at this dad. It looks very little on paper and it’s actually even less as his dad regularly cancels (my son doesn’t know his dad he’s coming until he texts me he’s on his way). But it’s the best his dad can offer him.
Some of my friends do a week at mom, a week at dads. I have a colleague that did: Full school year at dad, weekends at mom and they switch the next year. So many options, for many different families.
I think it’s great that you can eat together as parents. I also do this when my son’s dad comes for his visitation and my son loves every minute of it. The nights away from my house are still very hard on my mommy’s heart, even after 4 years of doing this. We always want to be right there for our kids, I think it’ll be like this his whole life.
Hugs to you as you figure out what’s best for your family.
KathEats says
It’s great that people come up with all kinds of creative solutions to this. My initial thought would be for quicker turnarounds because we live so close by, but I actually think the week on, week off might be better for kids to adjust. That would be hard on me though, and since I work from home it doesn’t make sense to have sitters for M while at his dad’s house, so I think me doing during the week and Matt some of the weekend with visits throughout makes the most sense.

All that delicious looking food is making me hungry! Those olives look especially good!

I just realized who Mazen reminds me of a kid Ben Afleck especially in his younger years, (not batman Ben lol) it’s the smile, so cute.
Sounds like you had a great weekend!

You’re the first to say that but cute!!

Kath, you have so many wonderful pictures. Do you ever have trouble deciding which ones to feature?

I know you are still deciding the outcome of your separation, but I wanted to tell you that am really holding out for you and Matt to get back together. I am so glad you have so many supportive readers who will give you a pat on the back no matter what you decide. That is my first reaction as well, but I couldn’t bring myself to do it becasue I have been in this position before. I absolutely cannot stress strongly enough how not deciding to end your marriage would be the best decision you ever make, not only for you and Matt, but for Mazen. It makes me sad to hear how a child gets to spend life with their mom and dad discussed in a logistical way. They should be able to be with their mom AND dad..always. The parents’ schedules should not be a deciding factor on when the child gets to spend time with their mom or dad. And kids aside, a husband and a wife need a wife and a husband, even though all husbands and wives are imperfect. Because they both decided to make ONE life together, not separate lives apart. I know I made just a random reader, but I am speaking from experience when I say not giving up is worth it. It’s worth it for Mazen and it’s worth it for Matt. It’s worth it for you. I genuinely hope this doesn’t come across as critical..I truly feel what I shared.

OH my gosh, I totally used to make milkshakes just like that growing up! Only I would use the breyers vanilla bean, milk, and then just go crazy with a wooden mixing spoon! Those milkshakes were the best!!
