Compared to other recent weekends, that one actually felt pretty long! I think because of the snow and light agenda. We spent a lot of time snuggling in bed!
We kicked things off with a Friday Fitness Happy Hour at ACAC. This one was themed “Couple’s Therapy.” Everyone was paired up (either with their real life partner or a friend partner) and we did challenges together. Matt and I are both very competitive, and so we were a little disappointed the challenges weren’t really measured, but we ended up having lots of fun in general. I also had 8 miles scheduled for Saturday, so I was happy to take it easy on my legs!
Matt and I did, however, win the Suck + Blow contest!!! By a landslide ; )
Gaby and I rockin’ the squat session!
Afterwards we drank wine and had apps from Trader Joe’s. I had some trail mix and a cup of chili once we got home.
My favorite bartender!!
And the best part – they had a photo booth!
Saturday morning Matt made us scrambled eggs, Irish Soda toast and orange. Pre-run fuel!!
The boys went to the gym, and I ran all around town with my friend Nelle. She had 22 miles on her schedule so we ran 8 of them together. It was only 21 degrees outside, and we seemed to be running uphill the whole time, but all-in-all it was a pretty good run. I took some dried cherries to eat at the halfway point and brought my Camelbak filled with water. My legs tightened up a few different times, but I finished strong. I’m REALLY hoping that it’s above freezing on race day in 3 weeks! I am one of those types where race weather will make or break me.
After my run, I tried to take a hot bath but all of my muscles kept cramping in the small space (ever had your abs cramp in a bathtub? Ouch!) I moved to the shower and then chugged more water.
And then ate all the chips! Half healthy kale chips and half crunchy tortilla chips.
Plus a big bowl of soup and a piece of toast. #refueled
I ran some errands in the afternoon and delivered some supplies to Mr. Sawyer and co. Cutie pie!
We had a lazy late afternoon on the couch watching Nashville and sippin’ some of Matt’s latest lager.
Mazen gets snuggling now and often says “Mommy can we please snuggle on the couch?” <3
For dinner we marinated some tofu in a mix of sesame oil, honey, rice wine vinegar and soy sauce and baked it for a long while on a rack so it got nice and firm.
Plus we stuffed peppers with leftover barley from a previous Cook Smarts meal – topped with cheese! These were so good.
Matt and I watched the movie Boyhood Saturday night. It was impressive in many ways, yet also quite ordinary in many ways. I haven’t really gathered my thoughts on it yet. It wasn’t really what I thought it was going to be, yet I still liked it.
Sunday morning breakfast. We were out of eggs, so we just ate lots of Irish Soda Bread!
I took a complete rest day, but we still went by ACAC for a little hot tubbing! Followed by showers and a visit to the grocery store…for lunch and groceries for the week.
Typical salad packed with garlicky kale (I am all about kale salads this winter) tofu, butter chicken, blue cheese and stuff. M was wild about the mac and cheese and nothing more. Can’t blame him!
Tonight we’re planning to make shrimp + grits with kale. Check Instagram for the details! (You can also see my Instagram feed at the bottom of this page).

I love that your gym has those Fitness Happy Hours…they seems so fun! LOL What does the ‘suck and blow’ contest involve exactly?
KathEats says
You suck a piece of paper to your mouth and then blow to transfer it to your partner.

Looks like a great weekend; love, food, and fun. Kinda like eat pray love every weekend except all in your neighbourhood. I love that you still play games and still have a playful side to you despite being an adult. You’re young at heart!

We had a similar weekend – productive but relaxing. Great job getting the long run done in cold temperatures. I love that you’re watching Nashville – such a fun show!

I had the same feelings about Boyhood. Cool but then just OK. I think it was the concept. Oh baby photos. So cute. And my heart would just melt with the snuggling comment.

Random question: What are your thoughts (as a dietitian) on dried apricots? I thought they were a healthy snack but recently I heard they have an added ingredient that is a ‘cancer-causer” for lack of a better term.
KathEats says
It’s the added sulfites to preserve color that are a concern. Natural food stores will have ones without sulfite that look brown but should taste the same.
Amanda says
I seek out the unsulphured dried apricots. They taste so much better. I don’t even like the bright orange ones anymore. Trader Joe’s sells them.

I love doing quiches for dinner! So quick and easy. Although mine usually don’t look quite as pretty as yours 😛 haha.

Random story of the day – I learned the hard way too about taking a hot bath after a cold run. After the super rainy and cold Disney half in Jan 2010 trig and I trekked back to our hotel and took burning hot showers. We both woke up in excruciating pain and so super sore and crampy. I learned my lesson to wait a little while before taking a hot/shower or bath! Never again.

Random question: Did you catch the name of the bartender? He looks EXACTLY like my friend David from college who I’ve since lost contact with, he was originally from Charlottesville, maybe that’s him? Or his doppelganger haha love your blog btw, I read it all the time 🙂
KathEats says
David!

Haha, mild about the mac and cheese… of course he was – it was missing the ketchup!!
