Happy Monday! My weekend actually felt pretty long – I traveled to Hillsborough in back in 24 hours!
Friday night I went to meet sweet Sawyer, BFF Sarah + John’s new baby boy! It was SO exciting to see him in person just minutes after he came into the world.
Saturday morning we had a babysitter come over early, so I squeezed in an athletic conditioning class and breakfast with my valentine before hitting the road.
Matt made quiche for breakfast, which I had with an extra slice of cinnamon swirl and samples from the breadboard.
I don’t recommend going to Great Harvest famished from a hard workout! Or maybe I do : )
Mardi Gras King Cakes ready to go!!
Coffee for the road!
My reason for traveling to Hillsborough was because my mom had her theater debut! I went out to lunch with my parents after the 3-hour drive there. Weaver Street Market has a great salad bar!
We relaxed at home all afternoon (watched the latest Downton!) so mom could prepare for her show.
Dad and I went over to the neighbor’s house for a home brew tasting before caravaning to the theater.
The show was dinner-theater style, so we were served a there-course meal before.
Salad, then a plated dinner of chicken, beef, mashed potatoes, some veggies and rolls.
And this strawberry shortcake – delicious frosting!!
Dad saw the play 3 different times!
The Dixie Swim Club is the story of 5 women who were on a college swim team together and get together at a beach cottage on the Outer Banks every August. We see slices of their lives over the course of many years. The director, Lisa, was actually my babysitter when I was young!
Mom played Jeri McNeal, a former nun who decided that God called her to have a baby and so she got artificially inseminated! She had to act out going into labor – she did a good job!
Her character was a bit ditsy and a bit spunky and she did a brilliant job acting!
I loved all of the characters – the women were fantastic. There were a lot of laughs!
Mom had SO much fun in her first play that she is ready to try out for another! They are doing Guys + Dolls this summer, and if I lived nearby I would totally try out with her.
I had good intentions of going for a run on Sunday morning, but the wind chill was so bad that I called it off. Plus I wanted to get back to my boys! Mom and I shared breakfast of eggs, oat berry teacake from Great Harvest and banana.
I listened to the first podcast of one of our Cville food bloggers, Jenée, on my way home. I’m excited to hear more!! I am so into podcasts during my runs these days.
A late lunch! No Bull Burger salad with stinky cheese and corn chips.
I snuggled with Mazen for a few hours before heading out with some girlfriends to see 50 Shades of Grey! The verdict? Totally exceeded expectations!! (And FYI, there were no mentions of the awful inner goddess : ) ) The sex scenes were well done, and the actors did a great job with their roles. I thought the first 20 minutes were quite awkward, but the movie got much better after that.
Afterwards we went to Rocksalt for dinner – vino.
Lamb + Clams shared with Ellen.
The crab cake served over a grit cake. I love all kinds cake!
And s’mores to share. Marshmallow all the time.
Mazen woke up at 6:15 this morning but went back to sleep. Instead of trying to go back to sleep myself, I decided to come down and write this post with a hot cup of coffee – and now it’s done! We are expecting a big snow storm tonight and tomorrow, so there’s an eerie feel in the air.

Congrats to your mom! How fun!
I also saw 50 Shades and agree with your thoughts. I was surprised by how much I liked Dakota Johnson as Ana.

So cool that your mom was in a play! Just goes to show that you can pick up new hobbies and try new things at any age in life. How did you and Matt celebrate Valentine’s Day this year?

How fun that you got to see your mom in a play! Always good to see a comedy! That quiche Matt made looks delicious!

Mmm scones. I’m making a kings cake tonight. Wish me luck!

My girlfriens and I went and saw 50 Shades yesterday as well. We couldn’t help giggling through much of the movie! It also exceeded my expectations though.

I am a s’more addict too! If I see it on any menu it is mine 😉
Emily @ Life on Food says
The closest Great Harvest just closed down. I am super sad. I will miss the sample board. I always went hungry. At first I would try to stay away but then I would dig right into the bought loaves and eat way too much on the way home.
KathEats says
Oh no…which location?
Pat says
Wow, that was a busy weekend! Our local community theatre group did that play a couple years ago. I really enjoyed it.

Nice post.
Micki says
I must admit, I know next to nothing about King Cakes besides them being delicious looking! Is there a cultural significance of a little baby sitting on top? New beginnings or something? I’m nowhere near any place that makes them, so I’ve not had much exposure to them. I’m learning so much!
Matt says
Oh man there are so many different traditions I’ve heard. It’s kinda an interesting mix of pagan stuff translated into Christianity. Wikipedia is your friend! (Not saying that to dismiss you – you’ll see how much tradition there truly is)
Nikki says
But what’s up with the baby sitting on top? Aren’t they supposed to be buried in the cake so that someone “gets lucky” and receives the baby in their slice?
Micki says
Oh, is it like a wedding cake pull, with a ring on a string, except on top?
Thanks for the reply, Matt. What do you say when people ask at the bakery?
Emily says
They’re placed on top so whomever purchases the cake can hide them inside. It’s so the bakers aren’t responsible for any choking mishaps.
I’m from New Orleans and the baby represents baby Jesus. It’s lucky to receive the baby in your piece and people also say you’re suppose to buy the next king cake!
Spice Chicken says
Yay, mom! How inspiring and courageous. And awesome that your dad attended the performance multiple times!

I have to tell you how much my husband and I are loving Great Harvest. The Hoffman Estates location opened last year a few miles from my house. I look forward to Mondays and Fridays when I stop by for a loaf. You and your family are great assets to the GH organization!
KathEats says
Aww thank you!
Holly says
Oh kath I love your mom! I’m so glad you had the chance to go and support her.
50 shades… Do you suggest seeing it with husband or girlfriends??
KathEats says
I think either…the theater was mostly women when I went but there were men too. It’s not too graphic – I think it’s more a question of the movie being a “chick flick” in plot and things.
Sabrina says
Please congratulate your mom for me!
Candice says
Glad to hear a postive review of 50 Shades. Seems like there are so many negative reviews, and I really liked the book (haven’t seen the movie).
Christy @TheMuddyApron says
I used to be in plays but I wasn’t very good. I admire anyone that can get up there in front of an audience and give it their all. Props to your mom.

Thanks everyone for your kind words about my play. I’m missing my character now that the show is over.

Hi Kath – besides Serial, what podcasts would you recommend?
KathEats says
This American Life is the only other one I like. I need suggestions too!
