We had an awesome weekend that was jam-packed with {relaxing} fun!
We kicked it off with the weekly Market Street Wine Shop free tasting – we loved all three of these whites!! Saving this image of the labels for later..
Friday night dinner was roasted chicken legs, sautéed Brussels sprouts and baked sweet potatoes in coconut butter – the chicken and taters were leftovers so this came together in minutes.
Matt brought me a Bodos whole wheat bagel on Friday, so I had that on Saturday morning for breakfast. Super crunchy and smothered in sunbutter, banana and chia seeds.
Is it strange that one reason I’m sad about warm weather’s arrival is it means coffee season is over? I have loved my Shenandoah Joe’s Ethiopian Decaf SO MUCH. Sadly it’s currently unavailable because something happened to Dave’s shipment during Hurricane Sandy.
Matt took a half day on Saturday and walked Mazen around while I did a little shopping for a new yoga outfit (!)
And then we went out to lunch. Going out to dinner is a bit challenging with a 7pm baby bedtime, so lunch and brunch are our treats
We went to Whiskey Jar, which has a great menu. I had the blackened catfish salad and Matt got a big ole scoop of black-eyed pea hummus with veg and pita. Plus mac and cheese.
But the show-stopper was this cornbread topped with what I think was brown butter butter. (Is that how you’d say it!?) This was like cake!!
Mazen slept in his stroller and then played toys at the table. We were lucky to have a great table tucked away so I could feed him there as well.
After lunch we wanted to go hiking, but the logistics of going into the woods are just a little complicated these days, so we did an urban hike. We walked to UVA and then took the long way home covering almost 5 miles.
Apparently Shenandoah Joe got my memo that I heart foam : )
Saturday night we ate leftovers and went to bed early. Party people.
Sunday was jam-packed on a schedule.
Pancakes kicked it off…
Followed by a grocery store trip that involved getting some Greek catfish from the Whole Foods bar to go on top of salads for lunch. Rosemary garlic rolls on the side.
Then we set the table and prepped for a dinner party..
Can’t forget Sunday laundry!
After the house was in order, Mazen and I walked a mile and a half to a meet-up at Sweet Haus for my mom group. The weather was gorgeous!
We perfectly timed a run for Matt that ended at the meet up so I could pass the baby off and then go to a yoga class at our new VINYASA studio, Opal Yoga! I am beyond thrilled to have a hip, music-playing, almost-hot, flow yoga studio in town. More on this in another post!
We had to prep for our party all day because I got home from yoga just in time for a 5 minute shower and a nursing session before our party began.
We had a few friends over for pizzas and salad – our signature menu.
This one was fig, arugula, honey and goat cheese and then several sausage + pepper pies followed
We had two salads to share –
We laughed, drank wine and nibbled on an assortment of Sweet Haus candies for dessert. That big orange one was a pumpkin spice malt ball. Yum!
Matt and I have a tradition that after a party we can’t go to bed until the house is back in order. After the chaos of flying crumbs and many dirty glasses, this was how things looked before bed:
Goodnight, sleep tight.

Sounds like a lot of fun! You’re always going to cool looking restaurants, and yoga sounds great.
We’ve been trying to save money, so if we go out to eat, it’s usually to pick up a pizza or Chinese food, maybe every week or two. Keeping things simple. And I found free yoga in town, and have been going for snowshoe walks and runs for free exercise. We have a wedding to plan and a house to save for, so lots of saving happening here!

The first picture of Mazen is so cute 🙂 He really knows how to look good in photos 😀
Shel@PeachyPalate says
Wowsers those pancakes look good and I want to delve right in to the laptop for that bagel! Banana SunButter heaven! Such a cute pic of the laundry! There is a similar one of me as a baby having taken all my dads socks and underwear out his wardrobe when I was about 1!

Fantastic post!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
A photo of teeny tiny Mazen popped up on your sidebar, and I just can’t believe how much he’s grown since then! He looks like he’s such a fun baby these days. Glad you guys had a delicious and fun weekend!

let’s see your new yoga outfit! 🙂
Lauryn says
aww what a fun weekend…your baby is SO cute. I have said it a lot but IM sure it never gets old hearing it 🙂 Yay for a new yoga outfit!!! Its my birthday next week and I think I totally need to indulge in new workout clothes, I am down about 30 lbs since last year so that will be quie a treat!
KathEats says
Congrats!!
Susan H @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
Wow! That surely is blackened catfish…yummy! What a great fun filled weekend you all had. I agree…waking up to a messy after party kitchen is not the way I like to start off my day. 🙂
Jessica says
Once again your cleaning skills have inspired me. I can’t believe even with a little baby you guys are able to take the time to clean up after a party and have your house in tip top shape before you head to bed.
Sam says
I second this!
Heather @ Fit Mama Real Food says
That sounds like a great weekend! I agree, dinners out can be tough with an early baby bedtime. I find life’s so much easier if I stick with what works for Hunter. Baby always wins 🙂
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
That picture of Mazen in the laundry pile is SO adorable!!
Carly @ Snack Therapy says
Mazen looks like a little Swedish baby in that first picture! Too cute for words! I’m also jealous of your new Lulu outfit. New workout clothes are so fun!

As always, change takes time to adjust to. I’ve read your blog for quite some time now and enjoy all aspects of it.
What I like even more now, is the lumping together of information. I LIKE a weeks worth of meals together because it’s easier to process and learn from. Dinner would be most helpful to me since we should have the breakfast and lunch figured out by now.. Love the MyFitnessPal post.
christina says
me too. And Mazen is just TOO CUTE!!!!!!!!!
Marlow says
Me too! And I hope it helps you!! As a blogger who TRIES to blog ONCE a day, 5 days a week, I never knew how you could write 3 a day!! Although you are a pro 😉
Liz says
Mazen smiles a lot. Such a cute baby!
Lisa says
I’m glad you are enjoying winter but I am more than ready for spring!! Speaking of coffee….what kind of frother do you have at home?
KathEats says
This one from IKEA – but now available on Amazon!

So glad Maze likes restaurants and laundry!
Morgan says
Mazen’s smiles are just too much to handle! They literally melt me 🙂
Pizza looks amazing as usual! Thanks for sharing!
Nina @ Too Hottie For That Body says
What a great weekend! I wish my husband and I had the same agreement after parties. He’s still under the impression that he’s a frat boy so instead of having elegant pizza and salad parties we have chili cookoffs where someone else up throwing out their back trying to do a keg stand.
KathEats says
Haha!
Lynn @ the actor's diet says
I had a bag of pumpkin malt balls over Xmas. I miss them.
Maria Tadic says
I love these posts of yours! You could write a book…seriously. I dont know what it is. But I’m totally fascinated by the posts. And the pictures of Mazen are so cute its not even funny – he’s like a little baby gap commercial!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I read every word in this post and I’m completely distracted by the cuteness that is Mazen’s cheeks! He is so incredibly adorable!
ES says
Your friends must be light eaters! I think i could finish a whole pizza that size by myself! They look delicious!
Amanda Cowan says
I just spent some $$ at Lulumon this weekend too, and at Athleta too. I LOVE their stuff and I was so happy to see what their return policy was like! So flexible and friendly. And slightly less pricey than Lulumon. Buying workout stuff is tough because it might feel good in the dressing room but when you’re actually out and about using it it’s a different story. Either way, I have lots of great new pants to wear out hiking and whatnot. I had oatmeal pancakes yesterday that were awesome, but chose eggs this morning to switch it up. Now I’m wishing I’d chosen pancakes again. 🙁 darn you and your yummy looking meals!
Anna @ On Anna's Plate says
Yum– that candy bowl looks tasty! Sounds like a really fun weekend. We’ve had great luck taking Lila on hikes in the Ergo…as long as the hike isn’t *too* vigorous 🙂
Katherine says
That photo of Mazen hiding in the laundry is possibly the cutest baby photo I’ve ever seen. It’s perfect!
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
What yummy eats! That picture of Mazen on the laundry is too cute!
Sarah @ Making Thyme for Health says
The photos of Mazen are so adorable, especially in all of the laundry! Any weekend with wine is a good one. I noticed that one wine is Excelsior…have you seen Silver Linings Playbook? I had never heard that word prior to seeing that movie.
KathEats says
I haven’t
Heidi says
End of coffee season?? In Seattle there is no such thing! 🙂
Ella P says
I had the same thought, no end of coffee season even in hot hot weather 🙂
Even in extreme conditions there is a moment for a delicious cuppa, espresso would be more than perfect (the Italians know it well….)
Emily @ Life on Food says
I love how organized you are with fun things and baby things and personal things. Definitely the way to go!
Jess. says
Looks like a really great weekend! I am so jealous of the nice walking weather you have. It is nothing but cold and rain and slushy snow here. Hoping things are better in the next couple of weeks!
I am also crazy about getting the house organized before bed after a party (well every night really) It is just so nice to wake up to a clean house.
Alice says
You seem to be incredibly active Kath.
Do you think walking is a sufficent daily activity for an aging 30 year old? Only have a treadmill with no incline and impossible outdoor conditions.
Would it be okay to do say 1 mile slow in the morning. A 2 miles a little later sometime and maybe another 1-2 miles later again. Is it okay to break it up and to make that the sole focus of my “fitness”?
Thanks for any tips.
KathEats says
I think walking is great exercise. But you’re missing out on the benefits of heart-pumping cardio and strength training, so the more you can get the intensity up at times and add some home weight lifting, the better!
Louise says
Alice, I wanted to add that I exercise at home using exercise videos when the weather is nasty. Working out at home best fits my schedule because I work full time (and then some!) and have a toddler. I’ve found Jillian Michaels’ 30 Day Shred series to be effective, and challenging. It only requires a yoga mat and hand weights. I’ve increased my endurance, and I’ve seen a change in my body in just 30 days.
Kath, Mazen is so adorable! What a great smile!
Grace @ Grace Dishes says
Mazen is absolutely the cutest baby EVER! The candy pieces look like little jewels!

Hello Kathy I found your blog about a year ago while researching school to become an RD. I loved it so much i visit most days. I found out i was expecting the day you wrote your blog saying you were making changes and i was so upset that maybe you would not be around as much. But i am glad to see that you are talking more nutrition and still showing snap shots of your life in cville. I love that you worked with mazen to get him to smile as i want to do the same with my baby, what is the name of your baby blog?? You have such a cute southern life, your family is wonderful. Keep up the good work!!!

Your weekend looks like it was FULL of great eats (especially that Whiskey Jar lunch!!)
And I absolutely LOVE urban hikes. My husband and I began urban hiking about 2 years ago and now we try to go whenever we can – it’s especially great when we’re in a new city (so much to check out and try)!

Diana @ Eating Made Easy says
Loving your little guy in all the clothes. You have the best weekends and I love how mazen comes along for most everything. You could do a cookbook with Pizzas alone. Yum
Sarah (The Simple Dietitian) says
Ahhh…Mazen just makes me melt. 😀
Pam says
I so want that blackened catfish! The cornbread looks devine, my husband loves cornbread.
I like your policy of cleaning up right after a party before going to bed. I usually manage to clean about halfway before going to bed after a party. It feels good to have that much done, now if I could only convince my husband to help with the other half!
Claudia says
Oh my goodness, Mazen looks so much like you in that first picture! Good looking guy.
Alex @ Delicious-Knowledge says
What a fun weekend! I love Bodo’s bagels. I used to get them all the time in college- I did my RD undergrad at JMU- and would always road trip to visit friends at UVA. They were the best! I would get a whole bag of day-old bagels to freeze and eat throughout the week. Mazen is adorable 🙂
Katie @ Real Food Katie's Way says
Man I love your kitchen!!!
Moira says
THe butter at Whiskey Jar is sorghum butter 😉
KathEats says

You had a very hectic weekend schedule. It was full of fun and excitement! I wonder what those salads were. BTW, Baby Mazen is growing up so fast. He looked so cute with all those laundry.

Hi! Can you tell me what the difference is between coconut butter and coconut oil (if there is one)?

I’m on the road, but on my food topics page I have a post on coconut butter
