Our weekend started out with SNOW! Nothing like you Yankees got – but a surprise inch was fun to wake up to. We have had so much surprise snow this year. The Weather Channel just doesn’t seem to get it right!
Friday night featured pizza, as usual. We had our friends over to share it with us.
Matt’s crust plus a homemade sauce made with cooked tomatoes, homemade goat cheese, cheddar, chorizo and peppers.
Charlottesville is on a roll with grocery stores. First a brand new Whole Foods, then Trader Joe’s and now a Fresh Market! I used to go to Fresh Market occasionally when I lived in Charlotte, mostly for coffee and a few special items like Swiss yogurt. But our history with the grocery store dates back most significantly to our college years when we’d visit Spartanburg, South Carolina where Matt grew up. His mom would always have a platter of crunchy baguette and the Fresh Market Cajun Krab dip ready for our arrival. I’m sure that was 5 of the 20 pounds I put on in college right there. To to make a short story long, Matt went to check out the new Fresh Market here in Cville and brought home some Krab dip for old time’s sake. It was just as delicious as I remember!
Our friends brought over a Greek salad to round out our meal – plus a bottle of delicious Malbec.
Our Saturday started out slow – Mazen and I went on a 5 mile adventure to Great Harvest, around town and back. Then we took a nap together. We were both worn out!
Matt came home from work in the early afternoon and announced that we were not going to spend the rest of the day alternating baby care with computer time. We were going OUT. We debated a few options and ended up heading over to Blenheim Vineyards where there was an anniversary celebration going on.
We tasted their four wines and loved them all. I actually preferred the drinkable, lower price point options to the more expensive bottles for once.
We split a glass of the red table wine while we enjoyed the afternoon
Blog reader Laura was in town visiting from San Diego and we coordinated a meet up with her. I was also spotted by 2 other blog readers while we were there – apparently it was the happenin’ place to be!
Back at the fort, we put together dinner and relaxed. And by relaxed I mean I worked on blog posts : ) Still trying to find the best time to work!
We made Wild Alaskan Black Cod {courtesy of Alaska Seafood} topped with a cilantro sauce made very similarly to the the chimichurri sauce we did a few weeks ago.
Plus millet made in the rice cooker topped with coconut butter
And brussels sprouts – roasted to a crisp!
French toast to start Sunday off right made with Cville Crunch bread, seared bananas, extra egg, granola and almond butter
Our Sunday was anything but relaxing – we had a painting job to tackle. More on this in an upcoming post!
Karen spent the day with us, and we had her for dinner as thanks. We had pork chops with beer-braised savoy cabbage and Omaha Steaks’ twice baked potatoes Matt’s grandma Bonnie sent us for Christmas.
Happy Valentine’s Day!

You managed to squeeze in a hell of a lot in to one weekend! Some gorgeous eats as always…love millet and even more amazing with coconut butter! Happy Valentine’s!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Yay for Whole Foods and Trader Joes, my two absolute favorite (and most commonly visited) grocery stores! And I lived in Charleston, SC for four years and I don’t remember ever hearing of Fresh Market, maybe it’s just in the upstate and in NC? Haha or I just lived in a college bubble.
Carly @ Snack Therapy says
You’re a Charlottesville celeb! ; ). The snow really is gorgeous. Sometimes I wish it snowed where I lived, in California. But then I remember how much I hate the cold, and I decide against it!
Anne @ eatcleaneatreal says
I am so jealous that Charlottesville now has a trader joes in addition to whole foods! My hometown is about an hour from there, and we used to go sometimes just for a whole foods trip…now it would be even MORE worthwhile! Enjoy all the good eats!!!!!
Although where I am now we have a Wegmans which is a nice consolation prize 😉
Lindsey @ Pas de Deux says
Looks like a great weekend 🙂
How did you cook the cabbage? I got a head in my relay foods bounty box, but I’ve never really cooked cabbage before, so I’m looking for ideas!
KathEats says
We used this recipe – with homebrew. It was great! https://www.katheats.com/recipage?recipe_id=6000148
Lindsey @ Pas de Deux says
Thanks! I will definitely be making this tonight 🙂
Susan Mc says
Ohhh so glad you posted that… cabbage + brew = yum!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
I have that silver salad bowl! Love it! 🙂 Glad you guys had a great weekend! It sounds relaxing, productive, and fun – perfect in my opinion! Happy Valentine’s Day!

The nearest Whole Foods and TJ’s is in KC (about an hour from me) but my daughter lives there and since I go see her regularly I get to shop at my two favorite stores as a bonus.
Maria Tadic says
All your meals look so good! Especially that pizza! I love homemade pizza…you just can’t get any better (cept maybe in NYC). Looks like you had a fun weekend!
Alisha @ Alisha's Appetite says
I always find my mouth watering at Matt’s pizzas! Looks delicious!
Anele @ Success Along the Weigh says
We’re getting a Whole Foods on our side of town next year which is quite the welcome sight so we won’t have to drive all the way on the other side of town to be looky lou’s! Looks like more good eats! You’re making me want to eat homemade pizza! YUM!
Anna @ On Anna's Plate says
Looks like a great weekend! I’m jealous of that snow– which is funny, because when we lived in a place that got snow regularly, I hated it! Now that we’re back in the south, I miss it. 🙂
Can’t wait to see the paint job– my husband and I just bought a new house, and we’re thinking about what colors we want to paint with when we move in. Didn’t you have a green dining room at one point? We’re thinking about green for our living room, but I’m a little gunshy when it comes to using bright colors like that. Need to just bite the bullet and go for it I guess!
KathEats says
Yep – La Fonda Olive was the color
Mom says
Paint looks great! I miss that good crab dip Karen used to get us. Delish!
Rachel says
I’m from Spartanburg and the Fresh Market is probably the only up side to living there! HA! The pizza looks wonderful!
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
Eats look delicious! What a weekend. Can’t wait to hear about the painting project!
lisa fine @ vermont vittles says
Hope you two (or three!) have something fun planned for tonight. Homemade pizza sounds like a possibility in our house.
We’re going skiing for Valentine’s Day, and last night we went out to the movies. Also on the agenda is picking up our winter CSA share and locally-roasted coffee. Speaking of CSAs and local produce, when will you guys start your garden up again?
KathEats says
I suppose when it warms up a bit!
Lisa @bitesforbabies says
Those brussels sprouts are making me hungry! They are so delicious “roasted to a crisp!” I love adding some crispy pancetta or prosciutto on top too!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Your fish + Brussels dinner looks divine. Happy <3 Day to you 🙂

They are putting a Fresh Market right next to my house. I have never been to one before and hoping it is pretty good.
I love your easy, relaxed entertaining style. I always feel like I have to have some BIG fancy meal or table decor and just end up not inviting people over as much because I don’t want to go to the trouble. If I kept it more simple, I bet we would have people over more.
Ashlee says
Those potatoes look awesome! Mine are never that pretty. Maybe I should stick the the store bought kind 😉
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
Another painting project! Can’t wait to see how it turns out!
Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning says
Whole Foods, TJs and Fresh Market?! You are spoiled!! 🙂 I actually just got back from a WF/TJs run and had to drive 40 minutes to get there (luckily they’re right near each other).
Ahhh Blenheim is my favorite. I’ve been hoarding the bottles of wine that I bought there over the last summer (I think I actually still have one from when Greg and I visited the fall before, too!).
Looks like a fun (and tasty!) weekend!
Mallory says
Haha I went to Wofford and that Fresh Market was always worth the trip over to the east side of town. Small world! I live in DC now, so Whole Foods, TJ’s, and local organic stores abound. Still miss that good ‘ole Sparkle City!
cathy says
The first picture is gorgeous!
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
Love all of those grocery store! We just got a new Whole Foods and Trader Joes too. Looks like you had a great weekend.
Elisa says
Hi Kath! I have to ask because my husband and I are in the midst of buying our own – where did you get that incredible bed frame?? I have been looking for a similar one for months and can’t find one anywhere. Appreciate your help!
KathEats says
World Market. Sadly I don’t think they make it anymore. Pottery Barn does, but it’s super $$!
Sara @ fitcupcaker says
Happy valentines day..I wish I was there to enjoy #1 the homemade goat cheese and #2 the pizza with the goat cheese, looks to die for!

“Karen spent the day with us, and we had her for dinner as thanks.”
I know what you meant, but that’s definitely not how I read it the first time!!
KathEats says
haha…delicious Karen!
Alicia @ Wanna Be Ina says
Kath, went to see how Mazen is doing, and baby kerf wouldn’t load. Just fyi.
LOVE Fresh Market for certain things. Hubby is addicted to their banana bread. I like that I can get fresh Gulf shrimp there even though I am stuck in the middle of Indiana!
Had no clue Matt was from Spartanburg. Converse College was on my short list of schools way back when!
KathEats says
Thanks, seems to be fixed now?
Laura (Blogging Over Thyme) says
I find that so weird that you keep having mini-sprinklings of snow, while DC/NoVA is getting nothing basically. My boyfriend has a theory that all the bad (flunk-out) meteorologists go to the DC area…haha –> Hope no one takes offense to that! 🙂
Sam says
LOVE this new blogging style! Recently you have published some of the best posts, everyday I am excited to come and read!! Thank you.

Love Blenheim!! Was really impressed with their Painted Red we tried a few weeks ago and also super excited to find that local Ellwood Thompsons here carries it (and their Chard!) I wish I lived closer to all those beautiful vineyards, what a fabulous afternoon 🙂 And I agree with the comment above, loving the posts lately!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I just love wine tasting! It’s been awhile since I’ve gone, I’ve got to make time to do that again. 😉
Kathy W. says
ironically, I recently discovered there’s a Fresh Market about 40 miles away, & was wondering if it was worth the trip we we happened to be in that part of town… think I will check it out!
annnnd…can’t wait to hear the painting story!!
Kathy W. says
“if we” not “we we” 🙂

Yay millet! I’ve been making Brussels sprouts your way and love them. Thanks for all the great ideas.

I’m near Asheville and we have Whole Food, Earth Fare, Fresh Market and about to get a Trader Joes! I’m not going to know where to go. They are all so good. I love the Krab dip from Fesh Market….one of my favorite things!
