[The above is a vast understatement]
As I walked to the gym for Cycle this morning, just the smells, the warmth, the green. Gosh I was happy! I did not like going in a dark room for the class, but it was a great workout and worth the brief dip into the darkness.
Back at home I snacked on a few dried plums and then made lunch at 12:30.
Do you love tuna salad?
Do you like smoked sardines?
Then you MUST try smoked trout!!
I picked up a tin at Trader Joe’s on our last visit because I love their smoked sardines and herring so much. This may have topped all of the other tinned fish!! It had the lightness of tuna (without the mercury) and the lovely smoked flavor of pulled pork. In fact, I bet I could turn this into a pulled pork sandwich pretty easily with some BBQ sauce. The smoked flavor was greater than the fishy flavor, so it barely felt like I was eating a fish.
I prepared the salad simply with 2 tsp mustard, 1 tsp mayonnaise, 3 pinches Old Bay, a pinch of salt and pepper.
Served on saltines! I used to have tuna salad on saltines all the time for lunch when I was in high school.
I had a celery stalk for extra dipping and a sliced plum on the side
Great filling lunch! It’s too bad I only bought one tin as an experiment. Need more trout!

I love warm weather, but the night sweats are not fun 🙁

i couldn’t agree more… warm weather instantly lifts my mood!! i’m definitely a summer girl!

Warm, humid weather delights this Louisiana native too! I will have to try the smoked trout. I love tuna on crackers. I could eat that every day! I even crave tuna right out of the pouch! Thanks for the tip.
Angel7 says
When I want a quick lunch, I usually always go to the kitchen cubbard for some tuna to make a tuna sandwich–yummy!

I LOVE fish salad on thin crackers — I might have to have that tomorrow! I am totally not on board with turning it into a pulled pork-style sandwich, though.
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I love warm weather. I just hate humidity!
Tuna salad is great. I’ve been loving it lately 🙂
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
Smoky trumps fishy flavoring, any day. Thanks for the product info/find!
And that first pic with the beach..omg. I just got the worst case of spring (summer) fever from it. Gorgeous!
Nikki says
I just fell in love with tuna sandwiches all over again!!! However, my fiancé and I are thinking about trying for a baby sometime soon–should I be eating much tuna (mercury-wise), and if so, are there kinds that don’t scoop up dolphins in search of tuna?
KathEats says
Chunk light is the lowest in mercury. I think the general public rec is 2-3 times a week. You should try the trout to have it more! Or sardines!
Andrea says
You can google “seafood watch list” and find some lists for seafood that is safe for you, the environment, and for the species of fish.
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I feel the same way about warm weather! I love that natural vitamin D!
Alyse says
I’m a canned fish fanatic but have never seen canned trout anywhere except online in bulk. It’s very disappointing.
Amilja says
I am new to your blog. You have beatiful photos and very well written blog. I enjoy reading it. I wish weather was warmer in my country too (Finland, North Europe). By the way, I am a nutritionist (Master of science in nutrition) so your blog is very interesting to me also in professional aspects. 🙂
KathEats says
Thanks and welcome!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
The smoked trout sounds intriguing!
Lynn says
Is the trout canned like tuna? Already flaked? I’m going to TJ’s this weekend and am thinking about picking some up. I ran out of pistachios and fig butter the other day and have to make the trip…I just wish I didn’t have to go all the way to Chapel Hill to get it (boo…hiss)
KathEats says
Yup! No skin or bones. I had to flake it up with my fork a bit though.
Lynn says
Awesome! Thanks! I’ve been on a serious fish kick lately…this will be a nice change
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
I always forget how much I love plums – thanks for reminding me!
Maria @ Sinfully Nutritious says
I love my vegan chickpea salad as much as I used to love tuna years ago. It is amazing how we can adapt recipes to recreate our favorites in a whole new way.
I think you are such an inspiration to stay so active during your pregnancy. Way to go Kath!

ME TOO!!!! I even love the humidity.
And mmmmmm, watermelon! It’s been my BIGGEST pregnancy craving!
Hillary says
It’s kind of incredible how much weather affects my mood. I am a miserable, miserable person in the winter. I just HATE being cold and uncomfortable for several months at a time. As soon as warm weather hits, I immediately feel like a new person. I already moved from New England to the Mid-Atlantic, but I think I might need to move even further south!
Ellie@Fit for the Soul says
ommgsh I looove smoked fish! And I love trout…your food is looking really good! And I like warm weather, but I think I always tend to lean towards cooler weather
kristen @ verbs and vignettes says
mmm plum! I saw them in the store the other day, but I got distracted and forgot to go back. add to that list sangria for me! nothing better than an afternoon outside with some wine-drenched fruit. 🙂
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
Now smoked trout I would do! When I visit my mom, I love to go to the local fishery and buy their smoked white fish and salmon…this stuff is goooood! They were featured on Lynn Crawfords, Pitchin In show on Food Network! Quite something for our small town in Canada!
Whitney @ Whit Likes Fit says
It was 42F this morning and people were wearing puffy coats. Send some warmth over to Portland please?
Jen says
I had no idea they had tinned trout. I haven’t ate it for years but remember catching and frying them up for a meal as a kid. Will look out for it.
Lali says
Love the Pin It Button!
Grace @ Grace Dishes says
I love warm weather but I don’t enjoy hot and humid weather. Thankfully Tampa right now is decent in the mornings so I can still go out for runs!
Hope you have a lovely day.
Jasper {crunchylittlebites} says
you describe those happy feelings quite well! It’s tough being cooped up in an office but the walks to and from work are the most lovely times of day!

sadly we are heading into Winter here 🙁

Love warm weather, too! Living in Sweden for a semester has really made me appreciate spring that starts in march. I think tomorrow will be the first day this year over 60 degrees!
Also – Trader Joes sells smoked trout?!?! Can’t wait to try it!

Can’t help but take the invitation: Some of my summer loves: sandals, warmth on my skin, picnics, making rounds at the local ice cream shops…:)
Annette @FitnessPerks says
I totally agree with you!! LOVE warm weather. It’s the BEST 🙂
Healthy Living Val says
Trout is definitely a good alternative to tuna – since it’s so easy to throw into a salad or pasta I end up eating tuna a lot more than any other fish but the mercury is a real concern. I tried to do the sardines thing by mashing them with olive oil, lemon, and capers and spreading on crackers but it was still too fishy. Too bad because they are such a good source of omega-3s/fatty acids.
Laura @ She Eats Well says
Oh that plum. I keep hoping that the Farmers Market will have plums and stone fruits soon…crossing my fingers!
Fran says
It’s been raining in London. Every day for about the last fortnight, and with rain predicted for pretty much all of May 🙁
Can I ask – why do you have your drink in a jar? I’ve noticed it on a few blogs lately.
KathEats says
Jars are just the chic rage these days. And I like the spout more than our 10 year old glasses

Mmm…trout! I prefer mine fresh from the river, but I’d be in for giving canned a try. I’ll have to go scouting. 🙂
madison @ toldinvain says
I’ve always thought about trying these!! Maybe next time I will be brave enough 🙂

I just saw this on Foodgawker and immediately though of you. Between your frosting and Biscoff obsessions, this must have been created for you! 😉

Hi Kath, I’ve always loved your website and marshmallow oatmeal! You’ve inspired me to take pretty photos of my meals :)) Just wondering – where do you usually buy your silverware / dishes? Your spoons and bowls and plates look so cute!!
Phoebe says
For example, the dot spoon and blue bowl in this post look adorable!
KathEats says
Most of my fancy stuff comes from my grandmother’s collection. She gave me a bunch of things when she moved out of her long-time house years ago. Others are mostly one-time purchases from stores like Crate + Barrel and Pier 1
Phoebe says
Thanks!

I haven’t seen one peach, plum(b) or nectarine around me yet!! I keep waiting!! I hope they pop up soon…
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I haven’t even broken out of the fear of sardines or canned salmon…haha! but smoked trout – added to the list! 😉
Maura @ My Healthy 'Ohana says
I’m going to try this! I’ve been craving tuna salad, my favorite way to prepare it is with a little mayo and relish…and I usually dip into it with Quaker Quakes rice snacks or pita chips 🙂
Abby says
You should try Trader Joe’s smoked oysters – really good! Although I haven’t looked up the safety…maybe I should do that now.
KathEats says
I have some smoked oysters, but I’m scared. How do you eat yours?
Abby says
Out of the can. I wish I had a better answer, but they have a lot of flavor and seem like a good protein. I will say that I don’t always want them. I’ll get a craving and then really enjoy them. If I open some when I’m not in the mood I won’t be able to finish them. Makes me think of you and sardines 🙂
KathEats says
Maybe just on saltines?
