Here are some updates we’ve made to our yard
Oof – our yard has been through the ringer! Thomas LOVES landscaping, which is a really good balance for us because I don’t really care what my yard looks like. (I want it to look nice, but I’m not going to sing to the grass every night.) He spent the entire month of September working in the yard. (I never exaggerate, do I?)
The grass got some much needed fertilizer!
Seriously though, there was a time when I never knew what was going to show up. Like the day when a giant dump truck came by to drop a giant pile of dirt in the front.
And then came back two hours later with MORE dirt!
All that super nutrient-dense pay dirt (from Panorama Farm!) got spread through the yard by hand, by Thomas. Poor guy worked after the sun had set a few nights. (He also planted all of those Schip Laurel bushes in the front by hand!)
T put down special straw netting to help with the erosion on the back hill. That’s the main reason the sod died on the hill, so we’re trying to keep the new seed in place.
We had a grass company come and fertilize, aerate and seed.
And I’ll be darned if there isn’t baby grass growing all over the yard now!
Here are two edible greens I had this week –
Tender baby greens with leftover squash, ravioli, and gouda.
And arugula with a white wine Dijon dressing, chicken, red peppers, and cheese.
What song should I sing to the grass tonight?!

LOL to singing to the grass every night haha. I WISH one of us loved landscaping. I love pretty outdoor spaces, but not really the process of getting there. Exciting that it seems like all of his hard work is paying off!

The whole yard process looks like a huge workout. You’re so lucky Thomas loves doing it!

Wow, that’s a lot of work! I do everything by myself, so some week the weeds are high, but the inside is clean! Some week the yard is gorgeous, but the house is a mess. I can’t be everywhere! And it’s ok. 🙂

I know the struggle! I think it is especially hard to keep the yard looking nice with a dog too… one year we tried really hard to combat the pet damage. My husband read online that you could ‘rinse’ the area of the yard where the dog went to the bathroom to help with the ‘nitrogen damage’. So for the next few months we had a ‘pee watering can’ to pour over our dog’s potty spots. It sounds so ridiculous to admit LOL! Glad we ended up giving up on that… not sure what our neighbors thought haha. Good luck with your yard troubles!

Oh, I love what T has done to the lawn! I bet it will look fabulous once it all grows in! Unfortunately in my area we have drought restrictions so I can’t really plant anything. It’s lucky that you don’t have to deal with those types of restrictions in Charlottesville right now!

We are just starting to have restrictions actually.

I love these home & garden posts. Good luck with your grass!
Also, I meant to respond to a question you posed a few days ago about online home decor services. I tried Decorist about a year ago for my apartment living/dining room. I got the service at a 50% off special, which was $100 at the time. A steal compared to what’s out there now!
I took an online style quiz and was matched with a designer, who told me to put together a Pinterest board of inspiration rooms. I also shared with her dimensions and photos of my room, which furniture pieces I wanted to keep and what I was willing to replace, and set a loose budget. Having a budget was nice because it meant the items she picked were attainable for me. She then designed 2 looks based on my preferences.
You pick your favorite of the two designs, and get one chance to communicate edits to your designer before she completes the finished look.
Honestly, I wasn’t wowed by the designs; I thought they looked a little…immature? Like a teenage girls room. It just didn’t hit the mark for me in terms of the young-sophisticate look I was going for. This could have been my fault communicating as well. However, I did like a mirror she recommended for my dining room and ended up purchasing that. It was a good buy.
I would still try another service, though. I LOVE interior design, which makes it really hard to decorate my own space. I just don’t know which direction to take since I love so many styles. I think I’m in the same boat as you with being a little shy to pull the trigger on big purchases.
If you decide to try a service (and maybe finagle a coupon code for your readers? hehe, just kidding) I’s very mucb look forward to that post!

Cool! Thanks for sharing your experiences. I’m going to try Havenly I think!

Do you still keep in contact with that Designer? Or is it just a one-time diagnose some sort of thing where she gives a free consultation and that’s it?

This post made me laugh because it so clearly illustrated that the UK and US are really two people divided by a common language! For yard in England, read garden (probably front garden in this case) for dirt, read earth or possibly compost but I think this is probably plain earth, for sod, read turf and for arugula, read rocket….
Sod and dirt would have quite different meanings, not very positive ones, but I can cope with all of them except “yard” because that to me is an enclosed area, often paved, definitely uncultivated and sometimes industrial such as in “builder’s yard”. So that’s the picture I see when I read the word. Good thing there are photos in this case, and well-done Thomas!
