Literally! Matt’s phone rang at 4AM asking if he could come in to work – someone must have slept through their alarm and Conor was double staffed. Matt was supposed to work 9-5, I believe, so he didn’t get in bed that early. He’ll need a nice nap today for sure! He never, ever complains about work though, so I’m so glad he’s happy no matter what the time.
I fell back asleep like the princess and the pea and slept until 8AM!!!!!!!!! I didn’t set my alarm because I was going to wake up to Matt’s, so I guess I was stuck in my dreams. That would be 9 hours of sleep. Yikes. A little too much for me.
What’s almost as bad as finding a live roach in your house?
Finding a ROACH WING on the carpet. Where’s his body!?!? We’ve been really lucky with roaches/bugs this summer ever since I sprayed the outside door frames with some bug spray, so this took me by surprise. I am an expert bug spotter – I can walk in a room and spy anything moving, so I nearly jumped out of my skin when I saw this wing.
Breakfast rocked! (Um, I think all of my meals have "rocked" lately!)
Pineapple chobani
Erewhon Raisin Bran
Chia seeds
Malted barley
Rhubarb Raspberry Ginger preserves
You guys said you were excited to read how the pineapple Chobanis are – well I’ve already had 2 of ’em!!!! You must have forgotten that I proclaimed them the very best flavored yogurt I have ever tasted. They are fabulous – thick, creamy, not too sweet. I would buy the flavor by the case for sure.
This bowl was supposed to have a peach too, but I let it sit for a day too long and it went funky on me 🙁 Guess I got my fruit serving from the bits of pineapple in the yogurt, raspberries in the preserves and raisins in the cereal 😉
And I can’t wait to buy another bag of Charlottesville Shenandoah Joe coffee. Maybe if we move there I can make it my work space! Really the best plain (non-flavored) coffee I’ve ever had. And I only have about 1 cup left!
Dontcha just love French press froth bubbles!?

Seth @ Boy Meets Food says
Kath, if you are still having roach troubles, you might try this tip I saw at Lifehacker…
I guess you could say it’s the “green” approach:
“Here’s a safe approach to getting rid of roaches. Get yourself an empty glass jar. A washed out mayo jar will do. Dump your used coffee grounds into the jar; at least, enough to cover the bottom. Put the jar outside. You’ll need to sit the jar on the ground and tip it at a slight angle to lean against a wall or something. Don’t throw the lid away.
The roaches will not be able to resist the coffee’s aroma. They’ll climb up the wall and down into the jar to get to the grounds. Because the glass is slippery, they won’t be able to get out. If there are any roaches around, it won’t take long before you find your jar filling up. Get your gloves, put the lid on tight and toss the whole thing.
Just be sure you use your jar outside. You don’t want to lure the creepy crawlers into your house to get rid of them. Oh, a couple of spoons of wet instant coffee will work just as well.”
Holly (The Healthy Everythingtarian) says
ohhhh love that flavor too! that and the pomegranate are soooo delish!
what kind of french press do you have? i don’t know if you have mentioned this before, but i need to buy one so i stop buying coffee out.

Daria (Summer of the CSAs) says
Ugh, roaches are the WORST. By far my least favorite living creature on earth!
But you breakfast looks beautiful and delicious. 🙂

Julia says
I was laughing so hard when I read your comment about the roach: where is his body??? Ha ha! That would be my first thought too… I really hate those roaches, but I used to be more afraid of them when I was younger. Luckily: they don’t really live here in Europe:)
Have a great day! xxx Julia (Taste of living)
Lizzy says
you confirmed it Kath, i must go out and get a pineapple chobani asap! have a super friday! 🙂
Eve says
That’s one nice thing about living in a new building in NYC – I never have bug problems. I know some people have roaches & mice – but I really can’t deal with them!
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
Roaches are the worst bugs! I hope you don’t get surprised by it.
Heather says
Roaches are gross! I had the same problem with my peaches – they went from rock hard to moldy before I had the chance to eat them.
Your breakfast looks delicious as always!
Kristie says
I’d be jumping for joy at pineapple flavoured yogurt too!
And jumping out of my skin if I saw a giant roach wing on the carpet. ICK.
Andrea [bella eats] says
Glad you’re still enjoying the jam and coffee! Move here!!! 🙂
Lauri says
I tried out the Google Calendar! Took me awhile to hang the hang of it- but I think Im gonna like it!!! Printed out a full calendar with school assignments, tests, social events, etc! Thanks for the tip!
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
YIKES! I would freak out if I only saw the roach’s wing. Keep your eyes open for a wingless creepy-crawly. 😉
Even without the peach, that breakfast sounds amazing. I’ve never tried the pineapple chobani, but it sounds SO good!
Angela (Run Study Eat) says
Love that little agenda! And gross….I cannot deal with bugs.
Jess says
Oh Kath you would NOT want to make Shenandoah Joe’s your work space….it is FRIGHTENING in there!! lol Great coffee apparently attracts the weirdos 😛 I tried working on my thesis there a couple times but the clientle was FAR too interesting!!
Hope you can come back soon to Cville!!
Kate says
Pineapple Chobani sounds awesome!
Ewww, roaches are so gross. I’ve never seen one up here in Boston (in my house, at least), so maybe we are safe? Unfortunately I just found pantry moths! Although not as gross, they still gross me out. And I have to put all my grains and flours in tupperware.
Rebecca says
I love the pineapple chobani!! I am dying to try the pomegranate kind!
Susan says
Hmm, I think I need to get a new french press filter. My froth has been littered with grinds lately 😛
I agree, 9 hours is a touch too much sleep for me too. It leaves me groggy all day! 7-8 hours is juuuust right 😉 Have a great Friday!
Sara says
Sorry about the roach experience! The breakfast looks great, though, even minus the peach. Like the small-flake raisin bran, too.
Marathonval says
Romantic date huh? Have a great time! 🙂
AnnQ says
Oh, MAN! Roaches are super-duper nas-ty! (not to state the obvious!!) I understand how you’re feeling.
And your breakfast does look like it was awesome! 😀
….and, once again after reading you blog, I want coffee. 🙂
Jo says
hey kath – I’m so with you on Gossip Girl – I just recently discovered it and am currently working my way through season 1 – but trying to eek it out so I don’t watch it all at once!!
Quick question – do you always soak chia seeds? Thinking of buying some but was wondering how I should eat them.
Also – with the cacao nibs – what do you do with them?
thanks!
Elsa says
I love that “Romantic outing” is on your agenda for today.
Enjoy!
Lainie says
The best flavor ever huh? That’s a bold statement!!! I’m DYING to try the pineapple chobani…wish I could find it!
Jen C. says
You probably needed that sleep! Sounds heavenly. I also love that you put romantic outing on your agenda. Hope you guys get to do something fun together…after Matt’s nap, that is!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Pineapple chobani, I have to agree, is the BEST flavor ever. I’m in love. I think they need to make lemon chobani’s next. 😀
Lovin’ your breakfast combo…and so glad you’re loving the semester so far! It’s making me excited to start my classes next week! 😀
Bec says
eeek a roach???? I would be so freaked out! At least you had that pretty bowl of oats to calm you down 🙂
Amanda@lessonsinmoderation says
I am having a hard time finding the pineapple Chobani. Can’t wait to try it. As far as greek yogurt goes, I must admit I go with what’s on sale but I usually always wish I got the Chobani. I’m a big fan of the blueberry.
Courtney Worthington says
EWWW! What kind of bug was that?! It was similar looking to the cockroach that made a most unwelcome appearance on our table eating Thai the other night. !!!!
Marisa (Trim The Fat) says
I’m dying to try the new pineapple Chobani! I’ve had the pomegranate and it is yum!!
Mandy A says
Are the pineapple Chobani’s available yet? I really want to try it 🙂
Sarah says
Glad you got some rest, even if it was more than you probably needed 😉
Hope Matt gets his nap too!
HeatherBakes says
I agree w/ the Chobani pineapple rave- isn’t it great?? I was so sad to eat my last container.
kristina Staszak says
hey kath! i love your blog i have to tell you. i look forward to reading everyday. just to let you know, those weird characters are still showing up, you had asked us to let you know if they were. some of the smiley faces are showing up although…anyways, happy friday to you!!
Jenna says
yeah i never can tell when peaches are ripe or not :/
Elizabeth (The Dallas Celiac) says
I would love to try the pineapple Chobani. I don’t usually eat flavored yogurts but pineapple sounds really refreshing.
Run Sarah says
I am terrified of roaches! We don’t have Chobani here so I may have to try a canned pineapple & plain yog dessert!
Serena says
I’m so jealous about your schedule – I leave for work at 7:30 and don’t get home until around 7 pm and that means 9 hours of sleep NEVER happens for me! HA – I usually don’t get 8.
I love the pineapple chobani too – it’s great in smoothies! Now if only you could convince Chobani to make their yogurt organic like Stoneyfield….
Angharad says
Your breakfast looks amazing as per usual! I love French Press coffee – nothing better in the morning and such a $$$ saver!
Evan Thomas says
Yikes, a roach wing would not sit well with me
I think I need to retry the pineapple chobani. the first time it didn’t do much for me but I think my expectations were just a bit off
Christie says
We have an exterminator come once every three months (for $55) and spray around the outside of our house. The first time he came he sprayed indoors as well. We don’t have a bug problem at all. Of course if you’re against killing the little buggers that might not work for you.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i woke up at 5:30 from my dog growling in my ear at something outside. never got back to sleep though!!!
Cait (Cait's Plate) says
Matt’s such a trooper! I would NOT be quite so graceful about getting woken up at 4am! Haha. That’s when you KNOW you really love what you do.
I can’t wait to try the pineapple now!! I’m sure it’s even better than words can describe!
Pam (Highway to Health) says
Ahh finding the wing is definitely worse! We just had a HUGE centipede in our bedroom, it freaked me out
Deva (Voracious Vorilee) says
Now I need to find Chobani!
Annamarina (Running Tails) says
I spotted the pineapple Chobani at our local Whole Foods and I can’t wait to try it!
Jenn Eats Nutritiously Now says

Pretty pretty french press coffee. Love.

Holly,
I have a small 3-cup by Bodum, but I want an 8 cup in a fun color!
http://www.bodum.com/
Seth ,
But what if I attract all the ones in the whole neighborhood!!
Jess ,
Ha! Well I still need more coffee!!
Jo ,
No, I didn’t soak today’s chias. Only when I want them to thicken something.
The cacao nibs have only made it onto oats so far – and into my mouth!
kristina ,
Oh BUMMER!!! I fixed all the formatting so it should not be happening. I really have no idea how to fix yours 🙁
Kath
Jenn (www. j3nn.net ) says
LOL @ roach wing 😯
Your yogurt bowl looks fab, can’t wait to try the pineapple flavor!!
Your coffee looks like hot chocolate with those bubbles. 🙂

Katharina says
Oof! Your breakfast looks so yummy! And to comment on your last post – i need to find a friend to trim my hair. I’m in dire need of one!
Angela (Oh She Glows) says
omg the roach wing comment cracked me up!!! Where IS his body!? hahaha
Betsey says
Kath-
How do you get such a beautiful cup of coffee from your French press? I’ve got a little baby one that my guy (also Matt! What a great name!) gave me for Valentine’s Day, and I love it, but I feel like it’s missing something…namely FROTH!
How do you do it?
Michele | aka Raw Juice Girl says
That breakfast sounds–and looks–amazing! YUM! 😀
*smiles*
Michele
Kath says
Betsey ,
My routine:
2 cups of water on high for 3 minutes
3 heaping spoonfuls of coffee in the press
Pour water over coffee and wait 60 seconds
Stir
Set timer for 3 minutes
Press
Meanwhile, heat a few tbsp milk in microwave and then pour coffee over milk.
I read recently that the fresher your grind of beans is the more gas the produce in that first step and the more froth comes out. Try my method with fresh beans and see if you get it!
