So thankful I do not need tube feeding, which was tonight’s MNT topic. . I did like calculating the nutrient needs for the formulas! Math is fun.
I took my photos at home as I packed up my dinner so
1) They would be more aesthetically pleasing and
2) I wouldn’t have to take photos in class
My classmates know about the blog so it’s not a matter of embarrassment, but sometimes I want to eat my snack during class and haven’t taken a photo and certainly can’t interrupt class to take one! (In my night classes we do get a 10 minute break when I usually snap photos).
I packed this Nicole’s Nutty Goodness bar that Amelia brought me from Charleston to have during Nutr. Education.
Ok I lied, I wanted a texture photo to show you how absolutely delicious these bars are! They are like fruit leather texture with embedded fruits and nuts and taste just like PIE!!!!!! I would like to order some in the future for sure. Gotta eat down my bar stash first.
I packed this apple to have with the bars, but they were very filling so I passed on the apple and saved him for tomorrow.
The dinner highlight was this Turkey + Hummus + Laughing Cow sandwich on Flax Oat Bran. Plus mustard and lettuce. Mmm!
And a simple green leaf lettuce + veggie + almond salad with balsamic on the side. Salads like this are SO easy and quick to pack if your veggies are already chopped and lettuce already washed (mine wasn’t, but that’s what I’d do if I had to pack lunches every night on the flash)
Brain food.
Feelin Suave?
Hot off the ticker: Kate Walsh is asking America to choose her hairstyle for the Emmys this Sunday. Suave Celebrity Stylist Luke O’Connor will be styling her hair, but first, she is asking fans to visit www.SuaveStyledForASteal.com to view and vote for their favorite hair style for her to rock on the red carpet.
But the real excitement comes in the form of swag bags and coupons: After voting, visitors can enter for a chance to win one of 100 red carpet swag bags and download coupons for Suave products. My favorite shampoo is Suave’s Cawbunga Coconut (a 2-in-1 kids), which Matt makes fun of for “Smoothers the Monkey.” I like the purple professionals line a lot too.

Last night has caught up with me and I’m getting in bed right now. I hope I can sleep tight!

That picture of the apple is really gorgeous. I’m loving the new camera!
Kristen @ frostingandfroth.com says
I agree. Your new camera is awesome! And that sandwich looks great. The turkey + hummus + LC cheese combo is a classic in my household as well.
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
That apple is so pretty. Looks delish and crisp. 🙂
angieinatlanta says
I love easy, simple salads like that! Sometimes simple is best!
Stephanie says
Random, odd question: Do you ever feel weird crunching on all those veggies during class? Maybe it’s different since you are in a nutrition class, but whenever I eat a bunch of veggies at my desk at work I am paranoid everyone can hear me eat!
Lizzy says
sleep well kath. i’m about to head to bed soon myself!
Emily, homecookedem says
Thanks for passing on the Suave info! 🙂 Just entered!!
Heather says
What a great, simple dinner! I love a dinner to look forward too!
Amelia says
Your dinner looks yummy, especially on that bread.
I’m glad you liked the bars. I plan on hitting up the market Saturday morning to see if she has any new fall flavors yet! I’ll keep ya posted.
Amelia says
Those bars look amazing! I love when you can actually see chunks of the ingredients in the bar. Then you KNOW it’s not super processed.
tosha says
I love on-the-go salads but often have a hard time transporting the dressing without it leaking. Is that a jar that yours is in?
Sarah @ The Foodie Diaries says
Gracias for the texture shot–you can see the bar’s fruit leatheriness!
Jac says
I want some of those bars! Looks so yummy!
AnnQ says
That bar look Fabu! 🙂

Packed lunches (and dinners) are so much fun! 😀

Kat (Kat's Daily Plate) says
Kath,
Do you prep all of your veggies at the beginning of the week?
kay (eating machine) says
good meals in class make you feel so much better than “i’m starving where’s a vending machine!” runs…
(i’d know since last year i’d alternate between the two 🙂 )
Jenn (eating bender) says
Oh how Suave you are 😉 Gracias, Kath!
A bar that tastes like pie? Yes, please! That texture definitely looks out of this world. Hope you get a good night’s sleep!
Jenna says
your “lunch” dinner looks great! hope classes went well tonight kath!

My husband had a feeding tube for six months. Creepy but I’m glad that’s an option for people in trouble.
Salad looks yummy!
Jen says
Yep, tube feeding is very sad. My dad passed away 2 weeks ago and he had a feeding tube for the last 2 months of his life. It wasn’t pretty but it did the job of getting some pounds back on him, at least temporarily. If nothing else, it reminded me that the basic purpose of eating is nourishment; any joy or other emotions we associate with eating are purely mental. Rest in peace, dad.
Chloe (Naturally Frugal) says
That salad looks awesome, I need to remember to have salad fixin’s on hand for my lunches more often.
Do most people bring food with them or eat out? I’d be interested in what nutrition students do as opposed to those out in the work force who might buy meals more frequently. Personally, I love bringing my meals because it’s a) way more inexpensive and b) healthy for me!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
hope you have a restful night’s sleep!
Susan says
We had to do all the tube feeding calculation stuff in my MNT class in college, but the funny part is that, as a nurse, the doctors do all the ordering of tube feedings and TPN!
Ellen @ Peace in Motion says
I love the salad and sandwich combo. It never fails me!
Madelin @ What is for breakfast? says
I love the look of that bar! And your salad! Enjoy your classes 🙂
sarah (ghost world) says
doctors may order tube feeds but we rely heavily on the RD’s recommendations for the patients since they definitely have more expertise than we do!
in pediatrics, tube feeds are not as sad — they’re just a reality in the NICU and PICU but a lot of the kids who have to go on temporary tube feeds will still get better and live great (non tube feeding) lives once again! in the interim, the feeds are so important to help their bodies fight whatever the problem is! you’d be surprised how often we will sometimes NOT feed a kid because they’re ‘too sick’ but the RD will step in and say that we are hurting them more than helping them by holding off.
on another note, the salad looks awesome! i would like to bring more salads for lunch.
christie, honoring health says
I have a friend whose child was a preemie and he still has to be fed through a tube at 5 years old, it is really sad. 🙁
On a brighter note, I really want to order some of those bars, they look fantastic and gluten free bars are hard to come by. The only ones I know of are lara bars, Kind bars and bumble bars. I like them but they kind of get old.

I’ve read for a long time, but never commented till today…
I’m a Speech Pathologist and I work in a nursing home/rehab center. We have a ton of tube-feeders, many of whom I work with to try to strengthen their swallows so they can eat something orally, whether it’s for meals or just for pleasure feeding. I work very closely with the RD on providing adequate nutrition, weaning from the tube eventually (if possible!), and it can be pretty sad. I have a new patient who is 33 yrs old, NPO (nothing by mouth at all), G-tube fed. If you do your clinical rotations at a hospital, you might be collaborating with an SLP!

Great lighting on the food shots!
Ana says
if you like #s so much kath, why have you never considered being an accountant? i guess that would require more schooling though…at least you can do formulas for patients as a dietition!
Amari says
I heard about your new Canon Rebel, I have one of those! Aren’t they the best? It has just the right amount of bells and whistles! Packing lunch or dinner can be tricky especially if you bring a salad; its definetely key to store the dressing seperately! Nice pics!
Kath says
Stephanie,
Yes, I do. And I chew slowly!
tosha,
Yes, a jar some pesto came in once. They make the perfect dressing transporters because there is no leaking.
Kat,
No – see the post text!
Jen,
So sorry to hear about your dad. Hope he was in good hands.
Chloe,
Most pack things to eat, but you’d be surprised at the number of sugary sodas + candy bars I’ve seen amongst the nutrition crowd. But I’d say overall it’s a prettty healthy bunch 🙂
sarah (ghost world),
Wish I could come shadow you for a day!
Ana,
My grandfather wanted me to be one! I think I would have liked being a CPA, but I think nutrition is more up my ally topic-wise.

Haha, Matt is so funny! I use Suave too because it’s decent shampoo and it’s fairly cheap…sometimes I even have coupons. Thanks for the link!
Meredith (Pursuing Balance) says
Feeding tubes definitely aren’t fun! I think it’s more uncomfortable taking it out than putting it in (well, for NGT anyway).
Kate says
Looks like a delicious lunch! I pre-chop all of my veggies on Sundays, at least for the first three lunches of the week or so. Then all I have to do is load up my Tupperware in the morning and add toppings. Easy, healthy lunch at work!

I love Suave! Thanks for the link!
