Matt and I took a personal day to head down to Richmond for some bizness.
Earlier this morning I went to a killer cycle class [drank 3 bottles of water to try to stay hydrated and beat this headache – unfortunately it’s still around on and off all day. One of the worst I’ve ever had
]After cycle I sipped some juice. Cycle is my only hard-core high intensity workout of the week and it sure leaves me drained! Juice helps so much to replenish. [Drank about 1/2 the bottle]
I also packed a few snacks for our car trip down – string cheese for protein
And grapes for sugar
Upon Brittany’s recommended, we ended up eating at Capital Ale House. She said they had good bean burgers and she was right!
Also a huge beer list, which made Matt very happy
He started with a Laughing Dog Barleywine
And I started with a salad!
Loved the bowl, the dill bleu cheese and the rye bread croutons!!! Impressive.
I got that bean burger after all –
It came with a cilantro slaw that I added from the side (picking out the onions) I ate half the burger and my fries!
Kanz got the lamb burger with brie – which was also very good
Then we completed our mission.
And last stop before heading home was Trader Joe’s!
Stocked up on beer [for him], sunflower butter [for her], smoked fish [for us] and my favorite Nuts About Raspberries trail mix and salty peanuts plus a Larabar I thought I might need on the ride home.
Back in the Ville fighting this headache and starting to think about dinner. See you VERY soon!
Vivi @ My.Beautiful.Air says
gosh those grapes look good – i am eating grapes like a maniac lately. spin class sounds killer!
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
Ugh those never-ending headaches suck! Hope it gets better. At least you got to go to Trader Joe’s – we don’t have one here, I’m so jealous!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
looks like a tasty lunch!! sunflower butter is always a priority when i hit up trader joe’s! i love their’s!
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
You two are the car-trip king & queen! Enjoy your little road trips while you can & they’re still…enjoyable…
Being in a car for hours with a new baby, well, it’s an experience 🙂
Nancy says
I seem to recall getting headaches in my second trimester and the nurse practitioner that I saw said it was due to increased estrogen levels causing mild swelling in the brain causing more frequent headaches.
Greta @ Staying Lost says
Those burgers look tasty! I am impressed with the restraint you showed at Trader Joe’s- I always end up with a full basket when I go there.
Melissa @ HerGreenLife says
Just what I was thinking about TJ’s. If I lived that far from a TJ’s, I would probably have a full CART. As it is, since it’s usually a car trip (rather than a bike trip) for us, we still try to stock up and minimize visits, often ending up with an overflowing basket (and a price tag that’s an unpleasant surprise).
Bridget says
BEAUTIFUL photos, Kath. The lighting, food, and your artistic eye are a stellar trio.
KathEats says
Thank you!

My first comment! I usually just read but when I read about your headache I thought I would chime in. I had headaches while I was pregnant with both of my children. At first I thought it was from dehydration, but when I experienced one of the worst headaches I had ever had, I went to the Dr. and found out I was having migraines (which I had never had). I know you do not like to take a lot of medicine, but if they get worse your Dr. can prescribe Darvocet to help. Mine at times were debilitating and as much as I hated to do it, I had to resort to meds…
You may already know that but just in case I thought I would share 🙂 Hope you get to feeling better soon! I love reading both Kerf and Berf!
KathEats says
Thanks for your first comment!! And for the advice. I’m working on it ;(
Elisabeth says
I’m sure there’s something else a doctor could prescribe if you have to end up going that route (hope the headache’s gone, though!), but Darvocet was banned by the FDA in the last year or two. (Possible cause of heart arrhythmia!)
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
What a fun lunch date and day!
TJ’s is the bomb–all their stuff is SO good!
Regina says
Have you tried caffeine? I’m 18 weeks pregnant and the headaches started a few weeks ago. Even just a little caffeine REALLY helps.
KathEats says
I haven’t had any today actually…2 days without any black tea – could that be to blame…hmmm
Cathy says
your body is needing caffeine. your so cute with your baby bump.
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
Haha i’m actually walking home from trader joe’s right now! I am very lucky to have one right next to my gym and only .5 miles from my apartment!
Kathy says
If you have peppermint oil you can rub in on the back of your neck and temples and it works really well on headaches without having to take medication. You can read more here : http://angelaharris.hubpages.com/hub/Headache-Cure-Essential-Oils
KathEats says
Thanks, I do and am going to try that
Lisa @bitesforbabies says
Why do we not have Trader Joe’s in Canada?? (or at least not where I live!) I heard they have Canadian-made products that cost LESS there than they do here!!!!!
Full-Flavored Life says
Now I am craving a black bean burger!! That looked so yummy!
Blessing {Working Mom Journal} says
Yes I recall those bad headaches. They were the reason why I slept in on most days.
Sarah says
I had a lot of headaches with my first pregnancy too. It was about the same timing as yours. My doctor thought it might be allergy related. Lots of things blooming. He told me to take 2 Tylenol and 2 Sudafed. Safe and totally worked. Just a thought…
Still loving my CVille Crunch I bought on OpenSky – Thanks!!
KathEats says
I only took 1 Tylenol…perhaps that’s part of the problem.
Glad you’re enjoying the Cluster!
Lara @ TresLaLa to TinyLaLa says
I know I’m being nosy, but what was the mission?!?
KathEats says
You’ll find out eventually!
Marie says
Congrats!! How exciting!! You must be over the moon!! Just read the good news on Babble!!
Rachel says

i was visiting the beach with my best friend’s family and freaked out when they had dakota bread because i’d read about it on your blog! i couldn’t wait to try it. haha small world… i’m the one in the last group photo on the left 🙂
KathEats says
OH fun!!! Looks like a dream beach week 🙂
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
Looks like a great lunch…the food looks fresh and wholesome!
Kelly says
Have you ever gotten migraines? I know that pregnancy hormones can lead to more migraines and even first migraines for some. I am a migraine sufferer, and I only got ONE during my first pregnancy, and it was killer! I rarely use drugs, but I use some hard core stuff to combat that pain. It was rough only using TYLENOL for pain relief. Yikes. My migraines were always stress related, and the best medicine was always rest and lightening my load. So that is my recommendation!
KathEats says
I haven’t ever had them before…that I recall
Angela @ Happy Fit Mama says
I can never leave an area that has a TJ’s without stopping in to pay(literally) my respects.
Malory @ Raw Summer says
Next time you should try the local brewery of RVA, Legend! Maybe better after baby. 🙂
Julie says
What are the benefits of sunflower butter…just curious!
KathEats says
Lots of vitamins [very good source of vitamin E!] plus protein
KathEats says
[And healthy fats!]
stephanie @cookinfanatic says
looks like you were right nearby my house today, that’s my tjs haha! love cap ale – they do $1 burger nights on mondays with the purchase of a beverage which is stellar. glad u enjoyed!
KathEats says
🙂 We need to do another meet up this spring!
stephanie @cookinfanatic says
Yes, I totally agree!! 🙂
Laura says
I am almost exactly as far along as you are in my pregnancy, and I am getting headaches as well! I’ve found that downing a glass of soda INSTANTLY makes mine go away! The small bit of caffeine (only about 40 mg) apparently opens up your blood vessels and helps alleviate the “pressurized” feeling. Just a suggestion, hope you get some relief! :/
KathEats says
I’m going to have some with breakfast for sure
Natasha says
My OB always recommended 2 extra strength Tylenol and a coke for headaches. I don’t usually drink sodas so even that little bit of the caffeine, combined with the Tylenol, really did the trick every time!
katie @KatieDid says
wow having to plan for snacks and eating seems to a little part time job 😉
Brittany (Eating Bird Food) says
So glad that you all decided to try Capital Ale House. And TJ’s is always worth a stop. 🙂
Hope you’re feeling better.
Meagan says
How can you go to TJ’s and not buy any of their wonderful chocolate???
KathEats says
OH we did!! I just forgot to put that on. A 3 pack of their super dark!
KathEats says
[Although something about pregnancy has reduced my love for chocolate]
Cait's Plate says
Sorry that headache is hanging on! I got a Black Bean Burger tonight too! At Bad (used to be “Big”) Daddy’s! 🙂
KathEats says
Did they change names or owners!?
Cait's Plate says
I think just their name for some reason! I’m sad, I liked “Big Daddy” better!
Liz @ iheartvegetables says
The black bean burgers at Capital Ale house are SO good! I remember being so excited that I could participate in dollar burger night, when I moved here! Veggie options = so awesome.
Hope you enjoyed your time in RVA! Come back soon 🙂
andrea says
with my first pg, I had many headaches…the dr ok’d me to take advil in moderation – and it did wonders! I maybe took 8-10 the whole pg and wasnt supposed to towards the end, but the middle trimester is when I really needed them. might be worth asking – hope its gone soon!
j3nn says
Your shopping basket is so skinny! LOL Even when I use a hand basket it’s overflowing. I have zero discipline at TJ’s (or any other grocery store).
jojo says
I’m sorry to hear you still have the headache!
When I used to take cycling class, I would finish a whole bottle of water, and it was a huge one! I guess it’s a sign of a good work out! 🙂
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
I love Trader Joe’s, just wish it was closer…
Molly @ RDexposed says
One beer for him but two nut butter jars for you? I think Matt needed at least one more beer. 😉
KathEats says
Haha. I think he was hesitant to buy too much Mission St. – not wild about their beers. Saving pennies for a trip to Beer Run!
Sara says
I’m sorry to hear you are having headaches. I had them when pregnant also – and at about the exact same point in pregnancy as you. I had no morning sickness so headaches were about all I had to deal with. One thing I did was lay in a dark room with a cold cloth on my head. After about a month they were gone. Hang in there!
Whitney says
My hubby spent several months in Richmond for job training and managed to visit Capital Ale house about twice a week! If I recall correctly, Wednesday nights were ‘steal the mug’ nights – where you got to keep your beer glass. We now have a ridiculous amount of random beer glasses. Whatever makes the hubs happy, I guess!
Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning says
Man, those burgers look GOOD.
I make a TJs stop whenever I’m near one too (though our closest is about 35 min away- it’s still not nextdoor!). I’ve actually never been in one that sells wine though, and need to fix that!
Angel7 says
I sooo wish we had a Trader Joe’s by us!!! That is my fave grocery store!!!
I hope your headache is completely gone!

Diana @ frontyardfoodie says
My worst headaches (aside from migraines) are always during pregnancy. I get them up to once a week and sometimes they last three days….TORTURE. I’m a total wimp with headaches. They suck the life out of me.
I hope you get to feeling better! I usually try to take a walk, drink a heavy dose of caffeine, take a couple Tylenol and lay down. Sometimes it actually works:)
Sara says
Yay for Richmond!
