Support the new Eden Juice. I love their mission to turn discarded veggies into delicious juice.
Eden is a new environmentally friendly company that makes fresh, cold-pressed juices from imperfectly shaped fruits and vegetables. Eden reports that we throw away about 40% of all produce grown in the U.S. – not because it’s gone bad but because it doesn’t meet the standards of most grocery stores. Have you ever compared the bumps, knots and coloring of the veggies at the farmer’s market to those in a grocery store? The home-grown veggies are not as pretty, but they are just as nutritious! Eden bridges this gap by taking the ugly ducklings and turning them into swans – beautiful pressed juice.
This company is jumping into a Kickstarter campaign to help fund their business, and you can read all about on their website, drinkeden.com.
Lastly, Eden is giving away a $150 VISA gift card here if you’d like to enter!!

What a fantastic idea for a business! I hope they’re a success! I watched a special on Food Network a few years ago about all the food wasted because it isn’t perfect enough to go from farm to grocery store. It made me cry. And just recently while grocery shopping I was trying to pick out a zucchini but they were all huge. The employee was out there stocking them and I went to take one out of his box instead of from the display and he told me those were the “bad ones”. They looked nearly perfect! What a shame! When I asked, he told me that they’d probably be composted or go to a homeless shelter. I sure hope so. But still…

I hate to be a negative Nancy here, but this whole notion of “bottled” substances actually contributes more environmental damage than nearly anything else. The amount of oil (a non-renewable resource) required to transport these bottles around, the trash that is developed from these bottles which are not recycled and placed in landfills (with non-bio degradable plastics), the non-renewable oil used if the bottles are recycled and transported, and on and on…..
I like the idea of creating usable material from “damaged” food sources, but the packaging really bothers me, and for all the ideas that you give above, the bottles seem to be the elephant in the room. (I feel the same about bottled water too)

Yay Earth Day! I contributed by commuting to work today on my bike (even though here in Winnipeg, MB, Canada, it felt like -14 C/57 F this morning…brrr!) And found out about great recycling programs from TerraCycle (http://www.terracycle.com/en-US/) so I can be even kinder to the Earth. Wonderful idea to recycle bruised/imperfect fruits and veggies into drinks!! I’ve always had a fondness for “adopting” the most mis-shapen apples and bumpiest squash from the farmer’s market 🙂

That’s pretty awesome. I first learned of that wasteful practice in the book “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle” by Barbara Kingsolver. Thanks for this spotlight.
