Strawberry Banana Almond Muesli
We dined in the garden this morning 😀 But afterwards, I had to get the husband to trim my hair. I went to a new salon and the woman had no idea what she was doing. I keep finding stray hairs and the whole back row had a big hanging down chunk that I just discovered! So picture us, him dressed in a tie for work, with a huge pair of kitchen shears trimming my hair over the garden. (Hair is great as a deer deterrent!)
We were up at 5 this morning for an early workout. I almost had to get off the Stairmaster early it was so exhausting today!! I could barely make 30 minutes and my HR was nearing 178 when I got off. Guess a few days off set me back. Whoever was asking me about Mets a while back, I finally remembered to look at the screen – it was 11.6 average over 30 minutes. Not really sure what that means! I also did a cool down on the Squirrelliptical and upper body lifting with resistance tubes. I find the tubes give me a much better workout than free weights and machines. My muscles are always more tired. I think it has to do with better isolation? It was a great workout.
Before I left I had half of a scone with AB. The husband ate the others, so they are all gone. Time to try another recipe!
Muesli was good – but not as filling as I has been before.
Today’s mixture:
- 1/3 cup dry rolled oats
- 1/3 cup chocolate granola from OhNuts.com (It got lost and I couldn’t taste it 🙁 )
- 1/3 cup low-fat plain yogurt (plus a dollop more)
- 1/3 cup vanilla hemp milk (plus a splash more)
- Small handful sliced almonds
- 1/2 tbsp-ish of ground flax
- 2/3 cup-ish cup of strawberries
- Half a small banana, sliced
With a steaming cup of coffee to keep me warm!
Agenda
- Commute to Winthrop
- Study 15 minutes
- Take Cultural Foods Final
- Pick up Physiology test
- Dietetics Final (not a real test)
- Medical Terminology Final
- Lunch @ Cupps with Christy
- Sell back textbooks
- Commute home
- VOTE
- Grocery store for milk
- Read on the hammock
Katie says
You have quite a busy day ahead of you…but at least it ends with reading in the hammock! Ahhh….
Becky in MD says
My boyfriend has recently become obsessed with buying a hammock….Maybe I’ll be joining you in reading on it! Also, I wanted to comment on book buy backs….it was always the worst experience! I got excited every year because I spent so much on books, and I was like “They have to give me a lot for this one, it was so expensive!” and then I never walked away with the money I deserved! And often times they woudn’t even buy the books back! It was the worst! Hopefully your school is better about it than mine!
rachel k says
dont sell your books back to student stores–they totally rip you off. i always managed to find some of my books at the uni’s library–this saved a bunch. with other books–sell them online and let the student stores be your last option.

yum, Muesli it is, this morning 🙂 Busy busy, enjoy the day & best of luck on all of those exams, wow!

I have a question for Kath and anyone else going back to school: I am considering going back to school to become an RD because of a long passion for FOOD, nutrition, and health. However, I still need to work FT to pay bills and would be going PT to school (1 or 2 classes at a time). I’m just wondering what everyone’s thoughts are on it….
I’m currently 26 and have been out of school for 6 years so it scares me to “you know what”!! Also, I’m realizing that just going very PT, means I’ll probably be doing it for like 8 years! YIKES! On the same note though, I HATE what I do and don’t want to be stuck in a cubicle on a computer for the next 40 years!! Luckily my husband is being VERY supportive and said I should do whatever makes me happy.
HELP!
Good food! says
Melissa – just wondering. What do you do now?
Kirsten says
Melissa, I’m in the same boat as you! Will it really take you 8 years? I have been out of school for 3 years and am now studying for the GRE to get my masters…. but not sure in what yet! I was a biochem undergrad, and now work as a sales rep for a biotech company and I really don’t like it. I want a job I enjoy. I’m thinking epidemiology or pathology? I enjoy research but you don’t make nearly as much as you do in sales. Maybe I just work for the wrong company… Any scientists out there?
Melissa (the other one) says
Kirsten and Good Food – Yeah, I think it would take that long 🙁 I’m meeting with the Dietetics advisor next week to see for sure. Back in 2000, I went to college for a year and got some GDR’s in (Sociology, English, Communications, Anatomy, Medical Terminology, etc) but then only went for a year. I then went to a Tech and graduated with an Associate’s Degree in Health Unit Coordinating. I did a 3 month clinical and HATED it! So, I got a job at an insurance company and have been here ever since. I sell Travel Insurance to Travel Agencies. Basically all I do is sit at a computer all day long and make prospect calls to Travel Agencies….. B-O-R-I-N-G!!!!!!
Stacy says
I went back to school for my Master’s after being out of college for 4 years. My program is considered the Executive program which means that my courses are a combination of online and intensive options.
It is tough to work full time and do homework, but it can definitely be done. I would recommend looking for either Executive options or courses/programs that offer night classes.
Michaela says
MET stands for metabolic equivalent. One MET represents and adult’s average, seated, resting oxygen consumption or energy expenditure. A 2-MET activity requires twice the resting metabolism, a 3 MET activity requires three times as much energy, etc. The MET provides a way to rate exercise intensity. For esample, If a person weighing 70kg bicycled with a 10 MET activity, the kCal expenditure is:
10.0 METS = 10.0kCal (1/kg * h) * 70 kg /60min
= 11.7 kCal per minute
I hope this all makes sense!
cara says
Wow what a busy day! Is it super busy there today because the election is so important?
VeggieGirl says
Mmm, Strawberry-Banana-Almond… such a delectable ingredient-combination for muesli!! Yum!!
Haha, so cute that Matt trimmed your hair in the garden :0D
Good luck with your Tuesday agenda!!
Betsy says
i always loved selling back my books cause it felt like free money. when it reality it was not at all. haha.
Katers says
Oooh, love that muesli combo! Def have to try that one. Did you see my carrot cake muesli? It’s my new heartsong.
I can’t believe you had the husband trim your hair! If I had P trim my hair, it would be even choppier than before, haha! Luckily, my hair is always different lengths – it’s super thick so I have to get it layered. If my hair is all one length, it gets HUGE!!
GreenTea says
Kirsten,
I graduated w/ a biology degree from a small liberal arts school. I found the same problem you are experiencing, the money is not so good in research. (Which seems totally unfair b/c people NEED the research being done oftentimes)…
So I’m looking into going back to get my PhD. That makes up the difference in the income from sales to research. Maybe I’ll even go work at a university where I can get little grad students to do my research hehehe. I’m mean.
healthyceliac says
Strawberry banana almond muesli, a husband why trims your hair and ending the day reading on a hammock? Sounds ideal 🙂
Good luck with the exams!
Andrea says
omg the more u talk about matt, the more jealous i get ;o) he’s a keeper
Heather says
Wow, busy day today!! Good luck on the finals 🙂
Melissa- I’m kind of in the same boat as you right now. I’ve been out of college for 4 years and am now applying to culinary school. I’m still trying to figure out how I’m ever going to balance the work/school thing… it’s definitely a challenge! Good luck to you!
Tina says
I love that VOTE is on your agenda! 🙂 I know too many young people that don’t vote. It’s so upsetting.
Jess says
It was a great feeling when I could finally do more than four minutes on the Stairmaster! haha.
I don’t know whether to trust the heart monitor on the elliptical on my gym. Sometimes I KNOW I’m working really hard and it says 88, and sometimes it jumps up to 200. I try to keep it in the 175 ish zone.. is that too much? It’s all confusing. Does anyone have a HRM and found it useful? I always consider buying one but I hate the strap and it’s more out of curiosity than anything else.
Alex says
I am so excited about the two primaries today!
It must be really exciting to vote in such a pivotal election!
I am from Michigan so my vote didn’t count…booooo
Justy2003 says
I graduated last year with a degree in microbiology/zoology and always knew I didn’t want to do research and be stuck in a lab all day/every day! So, I’m starting grad school in the fall for genetic counseling…and am super excited! 🙂
My boyfriend has been working in a research lab and is not loving it…or the pay. He’s on the lookout for something else and was thinking pharmaceutical sales or something, although that seems like it’s a difficult field to get into unless you have some experience.
Kirsten, how did you get into your sales job? And what do you not like about it?
Jess says
PS And Melissa, it might not take that long! You don’t have to take summers off, and depending on the courseload, you might be able to manage to take one very easy class with a medium course, or two easy ones together for a few semesters. (I’m graduating from undergrad and don’t want to leave 🙁 can you tell? haha.)
Tina says
Melissa,
I worked full-time while working on my Master’s (Higher Education Administration) part-time. I only took 2 classes at a time. It was definitely a challenge at times, but as long as you are dedicated, you will be fine.
I recently looked into pursuing a nutrition degree, but for me, with no science background, I would need to take a number of undergraduate/prerequisites. I’d pretty much be starting from scratch. I found a few night courses that I could take, but the “journey” was many, many years if I chose to take courses part-time.
Phoebe says
Good luck on your exams! It sounds like you have an incredibly productive day ahead of you.
Nick says
Keep workin on those scones! I’m sure there’s a healthy way to put together a delicious scone recipe.
As for those textbooks of yours, sell them on ebay! It’ll take a little more time but you’ll get a good amount more money (more money to put into the scones).
– The Peanut Butter Boy
Melissa (the other one) says
Tina,
Thanks for the inspiration, that’s very true!
I know, that’s what I’m worried about….I basically have to start from scratch because I have no science background. I was trying to think of something else I could go for that wouldn’t take as long, but if it’s not something I’d enjoy as much anyway, I guess it defeats the purpose of going back to school!
Kiala says
Soooo yesterday I tried to mix it up and I had a half cup Kashi Go Lean Crunch with one sliced banana and about 4 sliced strawberries. Oh and half a cup of milk and can I just say my tummy was NOT HAPPY AT ALL?
WTF? It’s like the exact same amount of fiber as the oatmeal.
I am mad.
I think I am going to sue Kashi.
I mean it.
Kirsten says
GreenTea-I thought about PhD, but by the time I’m finished I’ll be almost 30 and probably thinknig about kids… we’ll see. Definitly get the grads to do cell cultures and count cells, it’s like grad school pledging!
Justy- genetic counseling sounds cool! I’ve looked at that before. Like you I didn’t want to sit at a lab bench allll day every day either, which is why I went into sales, but have found that scientists are so hard to deal with on this end! They all want free stuff!! We are difficult people 🙂
Sales is hard to get into – I started at a small biotech company that was trying to expand, so I did customer support and marketing – knowing that in about a year I’d get to go more into sales, which I did. It has it’s ups and downs… Ups definitly being the money. I work for such a small company sowe don’t have brand name recognition like BD and Invitrogen, so that’s hard. You have a ton of pressure on you to make the numbers every month and that is very stressful too. People are often rude (no one likes being sold, but everyone likes to buy!). I hate making prospecting calls, that’s the worst. I’d be happy to talk off blog more if you’s like? I’m also intested to hear more about genetic couseling!
Ash says
Kiala,
Is this what you had for breakfast? If so, the reason you were probably not satisfied is because you didn’t eat enough. When I have that cereal for breakfast I eat about 1 1/2 cups and 1 1/2 cups milk then add some fruit.
Amanda@Down Home Dieting says
I love scones! I just made some cinnamon flax scones last week. I posted the recipe on my site.

if your hair was THAT bad, you should seriously call the salon and ask them to redo it. ask for a different stylist. I would be PISSED!
CourtneyS says
Kiala, sometimes Go Lean Crunch does that to my stomach. I’ve been eating it for years, too, and you just never know!
At least all you science people will probably make some money when you’re all done with school! I’m 27 and working on my PhD in political science (as my sister says, SOCIAL science is not REAL science!) By the time I’m done, I’ll have some expensive degrees…and make no money. Oh well. Do what you love.
Steph says
Kiala,
That Kashi cereal does the same thing to my stomach. I started eating it to get more fiber, and my tummy was not happy.
creatingadiva says
Justy – Genetic counseling sounds very cool…I hear its the most up and coming profession in the sciences other than medicine (which is only up and coming b/c people are always sick ;)) ….In the next few years, we are going to get so advanced with what we can do to manipulate the genetics of our bodies, we are going to NEED as many genetic counselors as we can get!
I’m currently applying to medical schools after an undergrad degree in finance and biology. I would love to be able to pursue a job in finance while I wait for my medical apps to go through but the market is so down 🙁 I’ve also thought about a masters of public health in the past..and now I don’t know anymore…maybe sales is the best way to do it? aghh soo many decisions!
creatingadiva says
my post is scattered…but my comp is being loco and I don’t have time (as I run out the door) to rewrite what I was going to say…be back later!
working says
I wouldn’t count on the PhD being a money-maker. I’m glad I’m doing it, but an academic isn’t going to make that much money, so make sure you love it! I went back as a second career and I’ll never make what I once did, but it was time for me to make a change.
Sidi says
Being active is great, keeps you in shape… 😉
CourtneyS says
I couldn’t agree more about academia. It’s not the place to make your millions! One refreshing thing about it is that you’re surrounded by people who really, REALLY want to be doing it.
Working, cool blog! I’m taking my exams in the fall and will finally start my dissertation, so I can totally relate.
Kelsey says
Sell your books on www.half.com! It’s a part of e-bay and I almost always get as much as I paid for them if they’re in good condition. You do have to pay shippping but if you ship them media mail, it’s usually only $5.
I hate the college book stores…they are a huge rip-off.
GreenTea says
No, the PhD itself won’t get me money.
Luckily I found a pharmaceutical sales job which will hire me pending my acceptance into a research-based PhD program. Then pay for it 🙂
I get to do what I love, get a degree for it, work a few years in sales, then eventually end up teaching other students who love the same things I do. Yeah maybe it won’t be that easy, but I tend to look on the bright side of things! 🙂 I can’t wait
PS says
Go Lean Crunch was not tummy friendly to me, either. Weird that it was only the “Crunch” version though. Ugh. That and those Fiber One bars? Not nice at all!
rachel k says
im getting my MPH (full time) and working (full time). it’s very doable–just have to manage time pretty wisely.
melissa, i love nutrition as well, but i also love 1,000 other things (policy, education, maternal and child health, immigrant health, HIV/AIDS education, health in teh developing world, advocacy etc..). my mph will let me give me the skills to impact all of these areas on varying levels, plus i can always get CE (continuing education) credits when I want to learn more.
ive thought about RD myself, but i am taking nutrition courses (some on the side, some toward my MPH) and i will just learn what i can now and go from there. my nutrition courses will really make me more markatable, but i am not really interested in one-one-one dietetic counseling–id rather train larger groups of people/design nutrition education programs.
hope this helps! let me know if you have any questions!

BTW…just to make everyone jealous…saw Jake Gylenhal crossing the street today. About 2 blocks from where I work in Columbia, SC.
He was looking GOOD!!!

Kirsten-
My e-mail is [email protected] if you want to chat!
creatingadiva-
Genetic counseling is pretty up and coming! It’s been around for a while, but it’s been growing quite a bit the past few years…so I’m definitely not worried about finding a job when I’m done with school! And I’ll get to work with people in different situations every day and actually feel like I’m making a difference in someone’s life. I think it’ll be a rewarding job…once I’m there! 🙂
working says
GreenTea, good luck. Not to be a total Debbie Downer, but my experience with science PhDs is that they expect you to be full-time (but if you’re a woman in science, there are tons of scholarships and grants for us).
Courtney, good luck with comps! I’m glad that period is over :).
I’ve also had, um, digestive issues with GoLean crunch. Maybe it’s the combination of fiber and protein? I only eat it when I’m going to be working at home!
Kirsten says
rachel k – are you specializing in anything in particular? such as epidemiology? Those two usually go hand in hand, but I’m wodnering what kind of jobs are available out there upon graduating.
Lbelle says
does anybody know the approximate calorie count for a whole wheat flagel (flat bagel)?
thank you!

Attention yogurt lovers….
Has anyone tried Spega Italian yogurt? I found it at Trader Joe’s. It comes in a little glass crock and, whicle a bit pricey, it is the best yogurt ever. Esp. the cinnamon ginger flavor! So creamy and delish!
Kiala says
Maybe it is the combination. I’d like, donate it to the homeless or somehting but wouldn’t that be MEAN?
I’m glad it’s not just me.
rachel k says
kirsten,
i am specializing in health behavior and education–at least im pretty sure that’s the track i will take. im also considering policy and management, just for the epidemiological skills it will provide….i will decide in the fall. are you getting your MPH?
Kiala says
something.
I’m a real gud spellur.
Kirsten says
rachel k –
I’m strongly considering it. I really love diseases (studying their characteristics that is…yes, i’m a huge nerd) so epidemiology would be a good fit for me, and all the programs are usually MPH, I’m just concerned about the job market for it.
KellyA says
Hello lovelies,
Does anyone have a pedometer that they love? I’m looking for an affordable, accurate model. Any advice would be great! Thanks!
Kelly T says
I posted a comment earlier about METS but its gone. Kath must HATE them.
Kirsten- i laughed when you said you love diseases.
Kelly A- i have a sportline that closes which is helpful so you dont accidentally hit the buttons and reset it. i got it at target for like 8 bucks. dont spend anymore than that, they arent worth it. if i had a dollar for every one that i dropped in the toilet or dropped on the ground and then stepped on or kicked when I was trying to pick it up, or threw at someone that made me mad…
flipflops says
Kirsten, Green Tea. I’m in my mid 30s and pursuing doctoral degree/on leave of absence right now, one or two slow classes at a time. Don’t let age deter you. My uncle is 58 and just started himself. It is doable. I’m hoping to finish before our adoption is finalized.
rachel k says
Kirsten,
The job market for MPHs is pretty good–especially in certain parts of the country/world. Where would you want to work? You can look at the job prospects for epidemiologists here: http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos008.htm
http://www.explorehealthcareers.org/en/Career.45.aspx
Fortunately for people with their MPH, or really any other health related degree, job prospects will always be quite good. There are always sick people. Plus, if Obama is president he will (supposedly) put a lot more money into prevention. Only a measly 7% of our country’s health care dollars goes to prevention! Crazy! Anyway, I think public health can be a pretty exciting field.
What do you do now? Which MPH programs are you thinking about?
PS says
Kiala-a good righter, too. 😉
KellyA says
haha thanks Kelly…hilarious.
laura says
Kath, I have a question for you (and anyone else who can answer!!) I am trying to lose some weight quickly for an event in about 2 weeks. I know that 2 weeks is not enough time to healthily lose any significant weight, but this is kind of an emergency…I know that phase 1 of the south beach diet (low carb) lasts about 2 weeks and often yields pretty significant weight loss, so I’ve been following a low carb diet for the past 2 days and hope to stick with it for 2 weeks. I’m vegetarian however (but i do eat seafood) so my options are sort of limited. I pretty much eat lots of egg whites, low starch veggies, nuts, nut butters, flax, fage yogurt (high protein, low carb?), tofu, seafood, hummus, and beans. Does this sound like a good way to lose weight in 2 weeks????
Kiala says
Thanks PS.:)
KC says
How does needing to lose weight in 2 weeks constitute an “emergency?”
Ally says
Kelly T- I bought my pedometer for around 8 dollars at Target as well! It’s works great and I don’t see any reason to spend more money on one.
I absolutely had selling back books. I go to a private school so we have to buy our own books every year the most expensive books are ‘upgraded’ so the only way you can sell them back is through ebay! It’s such a hassle.
Kath says
Wow you guys are all so smart and talented!! So many grad students 🙂
Melissa
Like the others said, it’s definitely possible to work full time and work towards a degree, but it wouldn’t be possible at Winthrop unless you worked nights because the classes they offer are very specific times during the day and are only offered once a year, so it’s very inflexible. BUT – all programs are different so if you hunt around I’m sure you could find one to meet your needs. It just might require some scheduling changes if it requires core courses that are during the day.
Michaela ,
Thanks for the Met explanation!!
Katers ,
I did see the carrot cake muesli!! I need to get creative with it – I’ve got something up my sleeve in the next few days.
Amanda@Down Home,
I did see your scones!!! How is the texture?? Crispy and crumbly or cake-like moist? It’s so hard to tell from the photos (and I almost made yours but didn’t have buttermilk so went with a milk recipe).
Kelly T,
I LOVE Mets!!! I have no idea what happened to your met post. It’s not in spam or moderation. Strange??
laura ,
You probably won’t lose more than a pound or 2 in those 2 weeks, but you can certainly improve your self confidence and feel your absolute best by eating as many whole foods as possible. Focus on fresh produce, whole grains, low-fat dairy and cut out sweets and alcohol. If you feel great on the inside, you’ll look your best on the outside.
Kath
JennS says
quick! does anyone how how many tablespoons a 3/4 pound of butter is??? thanks!
BethT says
1 pound of butter – 4 sticks
and i believe each stick = 8 tbsp
so, 8X3 = 24 tbsp
Amandamoo says
Melissa,
I am getting my master’s degree in school counseling through the University of Phoenix. They offer both on campus and online programs nationwide so check them out. Regis University has similar program structure. These schools will be more expensive, on average, than a typical university because they are private schools but they accomodate working full time very well. Good luck!
CourtneyS says
Laura, I would take the advice of Kath and others…focus on eating high quality whole food with as much nutrition as possible, drink tons of water and avoid alcohol, and work out (within reason.) Before your event, get a great dress and go for a mani/pedi. You’ll be radiant!
Michelle says
You should go see my aunt next time you need a cut! She does a fabulous job, actually she just chopped my hair off the other day. Her salon is in Carmel Commons 🙂
Ally says
Michelle- I used to get my hair cut there! I live ten minutes away from there if I walk and less than a minute by car 🙂
I get it cut at the salon in Belk’s at South Park now. I’m worried about moving because i’ve grown to love my stylist!
But anyways, Kath- do you know if Cupps is still open on Saturday? I checked the website and couldn’t find anything.
Kath says
Michelle,
I definitely will!! What’s her name and the salon name??
Ally,
It closes on the 10th – what day is that?!
K
