Our beloved friends, Justin and Amanda, are moving away 😥 To Las Vegas. This coming weekend.
Tonight we went over to their house to say goodbye (for now!!)
Munchin’ on apps
[I took some of the wide-angle shots with Justin’s 28 mm / f2.8 Canon lens. Need it!!]
Would you like some dinner with your pita chips, Kath!?
Local brisket Amanda got at the farmer’s market
Good eats.
Had a half glass of pinot with my meal
Desssssertz!!!
And a HUGE HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO NATE!!!!!!!!!!!
Oatmeal cookies
Tartz!
It’s been way too long since I’ve had cake homemade this good 🙂 I polished off the icing, but left some cake. It was excellent and totallyyyyy moist!
The Berg’s just came back from Australia where they feasted on the infamous Vegemite.
They’ve been talking about it for weeks and tonight gave us an official tasting
On buttery white bread – it tasted just like a really (really) sharp cheddar cheese! And smelled just like our garage after Matt finishes brewing (it’s made from brewer’s yeast and is actually nutritious). And it LOOKS just like Maranatha Dark Chocolate Almond Butter!
He likes it!
Goodnight!
And good luck to the Bergs on their latest adventure!
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
Ooooh dinner looks awesome but saying goodbye to friends is so hard… it’s not goodbye though, its check ya later, right? 🙂 Night!
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
Good eats indeed!! I would have devoured those dessertz. Your lucky 10 miler legs got some good replenishment tonight.
Janelle says
Haha, Vegemite on Kath’s blog! My husband is from Australia, so Vegemite lives in our fridge, and I am required to feed it to our wee one at regular increments so that he develops a taste for it and “stays in touch with his Aussie roots.” I can’t stand it – SO salty – but I suppose you can’t argue with those B vitamins!
Meg @ Be Fit Be Full says
I tried really hard to like vegemite when I was abroad in Australia but just couldn’t get accustomed to the flavor. I much preferred nutella while I was over there 🙂
Jenn (www. j3nn.net ) says
Lovely spread! Everything looks fresh and tasty. Now I want some vegemite; anything that tastes like cheese must be awesome!! 😀
Jenn
Jenna says
Whose Nate?!
Everything looks sooo good!
Lorin says
How do you manage to leave homemade chocolate cake on the plate? I would never have that self-control. All the foods definately look delicious though!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
that’s crazy about vegamite…i always thought it was a sweet thing, not savory. sounds good though! and i don’t know how you can handle yourself around desserts like that…i would go straight fat kid on those tarts!
Run Sarah says
The food looks amazing – great photos too, I am itching for a wide angle lens too.
Karla says
What an amazing spread!! Vegemite though?!?!
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
Those are beautiful plates! I have heard about vegamite, I’m not sure if I would like it though…
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Sad that your friends are moving away but that cake looks AWESOME!!!! YUM! Not much better than good homemade cake.. especially when chocolate is involved!
Hannah says
AHHHHH HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY!!!!!!!!
I’m overwhelmed right now because it’s so rare for peopel who aren’t Australian to knwo how to do vegemite RIGHT! THank heavens the Bergs must have had some trustworthy guides. See, Americans tend to spread it on thickly like nutella, cause it looks like that (or maranatha, as you say :P) and that is jsut utterly, utterly inedible. But toast with melted butter and a thin spread of vegemite? Yum.
And it’s funny that you say it tastes like cheddar, because a popular snack here (for children, usually!) is Tiger Toast – toast with vegemite, topped with cheddar and grilled. Yay yay yay, this post made me so happy! (and I haven’t even eaten vegemite in years, haha!)
Katie says
Kath, That quinoa looks AMAZING! Do you know what was in it????
Kath says
Go check with Emily 🙂 (Frontburnerblog.com)
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
It’s always hard to see such good friends leave. Best of luck to the Bergs! 🙂
Lisa @bakebikeblog says
ooooh I am an Aussie and LOVE vegemite! We grew up with it so I guess we are accustomed to it 🙂
Mama Pea says
Maybe Vegemite has kind of a nutritional yeast taste? It sounds delicious to me.
I hope Justin remembered to pack his lens! 😉
Laura says
Ur I wouldn’t say so Mama P: in the U.K. we have a saying: Marmite- you either love it- or HATE it. Very, very strong taste hmmm.
Kath says
Yes, it was like nutr. yeast! We all thought so. But sharper and saltier.
And the lens may have ended up in my purse…and put back out of guilt.
kate says
Who needs dinner when you have pita chips?! Vegemite is made out of nutritional yeast isnt it?
Kath says
It’s made out of brewer’s yeast, which is different but I’m not sure how
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i like vegemite too!
Ally says
YES! So glad to see you enjoying the vegemite (I’m from Australia). Like Hannah, I hate it when most non-Aussies try it, they literally just pop a spoon of it in their mouths and grimace, then say how gross it is. Of course it’s gross on it’s own – Aussies wouldn’t even do that! Good to see you enjoying it the right way 🙂
It’s so good with cheese – toasted cheese & Vegemite sandwhiches are the best hangover cure 😉
Laura says
Yay! Vegemite on KERF, how exciting. I love the stuff, though I have been quite un-Australian and haven’t had any for about 6 months. I might have to indulge in its salty goodness tomorrow.
Anne @ Food Loving Polar Bear says
UHHUH, I didn’t get the Vegemite when I first tried it or the second time 😀
The bday cake looks delicious!
B says
Hey! I’m an aussie and I spread it on thick like nutella 😀 I think it tastes like soy-sauce in a spread!
But yes, its good to introduce it to people with some butter, and spread thinly, rather than on a spoon. Just dont let them smell the jar first! I also like it on a grilled cheese sandwhich.
Kath, I love your blog – its reliably beautiful and creative, and I am sure has inspired many other food bloggers. I really love how you share your experiences and education in nutrition. Although I rarely comment, the vegemite inspired me. You make me want to get out and try to get to the point where I can run a whole ten miles! And I am a running-hater!
Kath says
Thanks B! And soy sauce is a great description 🙂
Jaimers says
Holy mackerel that looks like a good meal.
I always wondered what Vegemite was!
Andrea @ Tastebud Approved says
Ugh, totally jealous of all the delicious looking food! Hope you had as good of a time with your friends as you did with all that lovely food!
Jo says
Hi Kath
As an avid Aussie reader of your blog, I’m glad you didn’t bag out our national food of choice 🙂 It is an excellent source of B vitamins (and sodium, but let’s not go there) and it makes a great additive to soups and stocks for vegetarian folk!
Ruth says
Reading between the lines I’m guessing you hated the Vegemite! that doesn’t surprise me, as Marmite is FAR superior 🙂
Kath says
No I liked it!!!!!!!!
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
Awh that’s sad they’re leaving, but I bet they’ll have a ball in Vegas! (And get very poor very quickly with all the slot machines!?) I love that whole spread of food – it looks amazing! All the best to them 🙂
Diana says
Ahhh, the food looks delicious! And that cake is so cute 🙂
Laura says
Over in England we have a plethora of marmite infused things: covered cashews, protein bars, rice cakes, crackers… no escape! My best friend has marmite on toast every morning + I just can’t go near her afterwards 😉 I’d really, really like to like it though- lots of B vitamins etc!
Its always so sad when good friends move away- but now you have an excuse to go to Las Vegas he he!
Laura says
P.S. if Matt likes it: maybe he could check this out for inspiration (if he ever needed any!) http://www.marmite.com/love/sarnies/
Rachel (Suburban Yogini) says
Vegemite > Marmite. Fact
(not that I’m biased or anything)
Phoebe says
YAY! you knew how to eat your vegemite! Im from Aust, have grown up with it and definitely love it! Spread thinly on toast with butter or on sour dough also with butter and its delish! I think its one of those foods you can definitely get cravings for! Love your blog!
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
What an amazing spread! Yum!
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
It’s so sad when good friends move away. Looks like you guys all had a wonderful night.
Amanda @ The Hungry Wanderers says
I love that Kath has so many Vegemite-loving readers :o) We had wanted to bring every one back the little packets of Vegemite that you can get at cafes or hotel breakfast buffets but when we began trying to gather some, no one had any! We were glad we were able to get everyone over to try some, and I’m impressed that so many of them liked it 🙂 Matt almost tried to spread it on thick but thankfully I was there to intervene!
Amanda @ The Hungry Wanderers says
Oh, and one more thing! If it weren’t for my friend Jaclyn who wanted to meet Kath when she came to visit me, I would have never met as good of friends as Kath and Matt and in turn our entire group of friends here in Charlotte (I was too shy!). The Husband and I are going to miss them immensely when we move in a few days but we’re so happy to have found them all. So, moral of the story – if you want to meet a blogger, just ask! You never know if you’re going to find some really amazing friends out of it 🙂
Kath says
🙂
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Fun, fun night filled with friends and good food! Everything looks perfect! 😀
Jo says
Ha ha – the eternal vegemite vs Marmite debate.
obviously marmite wins HANDS DOWN….
However, its cos I’m british and I think its just what you have been bought up on.
toast with butter and marmite is the best BUT cheese and marmite toasties are really awesome too.
we used to eat banana and marmite sandwiches at school (but that’s more because I was away at boarding school and the food was pretty dire and that’s all we had to hand! I wouldn’t really recommend it)
Anne P says
Ah , vegemite. Brings me back to study abroad in Australia! 🙂
