It’s been weird being in the office so early – I forgot what it was like! Wish you could have joined me for this morning’s appointments. They were both very interesting and enjoyable to listen to.
I packed lunch today of a little of everything –
I started with my produce – leftover kale + tomato salad (I took some out of the bowl last night before Matt got to it!) and watermelon cubes
My protein source was an egg I hardboiled last night = simple, cheap + easy to pack.
The delicious part of lunch was a yogurt mixture of the last of a big container of Oikos (probably only about 1/3 a cup in there) plus 1/4 cup AgavePlus granola, a little me&goji and some chia seeds
And finally dessert – a piece of Great Harvest banana chocolate chip muffin. I’m pretty sure this guy was whole grain (probably not low-fat, but probably made with canola) so it’s likely the healthiest muffin you can buy in town 🙂
Since I came in early, I just have a few hours of work and then am headed back out. I’m planning to go running, but I hear there’s rain in the forecast 🙁 We’ll see! I’ve certainly got the energy craving.

Congrats!! What an awesome article!!!!

I really enjoyed the article but I thought your inspiration for the blog was Self’s “Eat Like Me.”
Mel @ She Run Brooklyn says
Wow, what a spread!
I love that you even had a dessert in there. Sometimes I even grab 1 hershey kiss after breakfast… am I crazy? 😉
Kath says
Christie,
I was the first independent food diary blog.

Melissa says
Congratulations on the article! You definately deserve the recognition.
I want that yogurt in my belly 🙂
Allyson says
Hey Kath,
I know you’ve been talking a lot about your food budget lately, and one of the financial blogs I read, Get Rich Slowly (http://www.getrichslowly.org/blog/) had a post today about food budgeting that might be helpful!
He linked to this article PACK with info: http://nchstd.documents.s3.amazonaws.com/More%20Month%20than%20Money%20PDF.pdf
I’ve only gotten a chance to skim it but so far so amazing! All real food on a budget. Kinda perfect!
Enjoy!

This message is my second one here…. I’ve just discover (last week) your blog and I’m now addict 🙂 It’s so inspiring for me to read your blog, you’re an extraordinary healthy example for everybody, including myself obviously! I’m from Quebec (that why my English isn’t so good) and I dream from a long time to become dietetician….but I’ve done 6 years at University then to become a career counselor… Even if I’ll turn 29 years old next years, I think I’ll try to register at this program…
Because of you, I now believe I can get exercices everyday and have fun! I’ve try this last week, and I’m so proud of me!
I won’t tell you all my story, but I wanted to thanks you for your example 🙂
Anna says
I feel like you should have at least mentioned Eat Like Me, but…whatev!
Cait (Cait's Plate) says
Yay! Thanks for the shoutout Kath 🙂
The article is awesome – it’s so true – two years ago no one was doing this and now there are so many out there it’s crazy!!
JENNA says
Regardless of whether you where first or eat like me was first…..(lol) you have a really great blog that has inspired tons of people and you should be proud.
Helen says
I meant to ask the last time I saw it…where’d you get your lunch bag, and did it hold all that lunch? I need a new one, and the longer it will last the better! Bigger is good, too 😉 And hopefully not toooo expensive, but if it’s good…
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Fun article, Kath! 😀
Hope you don’t get rained on!! :-o!!!
Becci says
Did you entire lunch go into your Built NY bag? I have been looking at those, but I am doubtful of their holding capacity!
Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) says
I like the hard-boiled egg. I just posted about all the health benefits of eggs yesterday. Also, eating yogurt out of the big tub is so fun – there’s finally enough room for all of my mix-ins!
Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) says
Wow what a tower!! And what a variety too! Very simple yet fun…love it!
Glad you are having a great day at work! Enjoy the rest of it =)
april says
You are so lucky you get a bunch of yummy baked goodies!
brandi says
i made hb eggs last night too! so quick and easy.
what a great article!
seems like we’re having the same weather here in VA – I’m hoping the rain holds out so we can run after work.
The Duo Dishes says
How about the yogurt mixed with bits of the muffin? Yum.
Mrs. Myers (Eat Move Write) says
Kath, how fun is that! I love the article. You should be very proud. It really is cool what you’ve done.
Danielle says
Your lunch looks so good, I love the tower of food, at the end of the day sometimes my co-workers tease me about the # of tupperware containers I have on my desk.
Kristi says
What a fun article! You def. deserve the aknowledgement!
Marissa says
I’m not trying to be rude or offensive but I agree that you should have mentioned “Eat Like Me.” Otherwise, you’re taking credit for something you didn’t do. Even though you were the first independent food blog, you weren’t the first food blog (which is what the article states).
I work in an industry where my career is built upon the ideas that I come up with…I never claim someone’s ideas as my own because I would never want someone to do that to me.
Chloe (Naturally Frugal) says
Awesome article Kath, it must feel great to be recognized in that way! Like so many other readers I’m addicted to your blog and love it because you are so down to earth and lead by a great example. Keep up the good work!
Kath says
Guys,
I did mention Eat Like Me in the interview, but I did not write the article or have control over its content!! Cristin’s blog was definitely an inspiration.
Kath
skinnyrunner says
congrats on the articles!
Whitney says
I love the article! Great job!
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
What a perfect lunch! I’m always so impressed by your ability to find some of the yummiest lunches to pack. What a perfect mix of different foods, textures, and tastes! 🙂
Hope you get in your run before it rains!
Emily says
Love the article!! You know you’re #1 in my book! 🙂
Katie says
Katie Drummond, article writer here. I just want to clarify that Kath did mention the Eat Like Me blog in our interview. It didn’t fit into the edited version, largely because I think Kath does deserve credit in her own right for being the first “indie-style” ongoing food blog.
Katie says
Hi Kath 🙂 I have been reading your blog for months but never commented. I just read the interview you gave on Extreme Self – I am recovering from anorexia and reading your blog has given me a lot of hope, it shows that there are some women out there who are well balanced and healthy around food. You are definitely a role model for me!
Jen says
I love all the variety in your lunch!!
I hope the rain holds out so you can get a run in!!! <3
Jenn Eats Nutritiously Now says
Ha! I like the huge stack of tupperware for your lunch!
Teddy says
Agave sweetened granola sounds fantastic! I usually use maple syrup but agave seems much healthier.

Natalie M. says
Oooo I’d savor a mix of Great Granola, Goldenberries, Figs, Dates, Chia Seeds.. Man that sounds yummalicious!
Katherine says
Is Canola Oil healthy? It is genetically engineered…from rapeseed and is possibly toxic for humans…
Sure it has health benefits – low in saturted fats, but is it natural?

Shannon (The Daily Balance) says
great article! so well-deserved 😉
Stacey says
🙁 Hope you got your energy craving in somehow!! I’m excited about tomorrow if this stupid rain holds off…oh and I was planning on throwing on my pj pants and skipping a workout altogether but you have now inspired me to get off my arse and do SOMETHING (though it may be at the gym)
Thanks!
Gena (Choosing Raw) says
Great interview, K, and very good response to the eating disorder query.

Great Article/Interview! It was fun to read!!!! You should be super flattered that we’ve all followed in your footsteps with food blogs!
I often wondered if you were a bit of a celebrity? I know I’d trip over myself if I met you or saw you out and about! 🙂
Lara says
I have that same lunch bag and to the reader who asked if it fits a lot, YES it fits a ton. I call it the “clown bag” (like the clown car–where so many clowns fit into the little car) It is amazing how much you can cram in there.
Sarah (LovIN My Tummy) says
Gracie builds towers like that all the time. I hope your mom doesn’t have to scrape up the yogurt off the floor when it topples. Grr…
Helen says
Lara (comment #43) – so where can I buy it?
Beth @ CrossBorderCravings says
I had no idea you are the “original” food blogger! What a claim to fame!
mb says
katie drummond… is that misspickle? she is amazing! loved the article!
amber says
Great article. I always wondered who was the first food blogger and I thought it was yours, although I feel as if I get the sense from other blogs that they were the “starters”. That is one thing that bothers me about the blog world, I feel as if there are so many people who take credit for things they so called started, in this case you deserve the credit and never harp about it.
I think your blog is my favorite because you not only inspired may others to change their eating habits or document their healthy ways but your photography is amazing and your writing style is very addicting. Eat LIke me was the first food blog I ever read but I never became attached to it like I have become with yours. I am glad you have finally been given the credit as the one who started it all. Congratulations.
Ruth says
Just ran into your blog… LOVE IT!
you tower looks great!
Kristen says
It looks like I started blog reading with the best and the original! I hate to use the word addiction….maybe compulsion? Anyways, I totally dig your blog and wish you the best! Great article. 🙂 I started blogging just a month ago at one of the craziest times of my life…wedding time…maybe not the brightest idea, but so fun!
Joelle (The Pancake Girl) says
Congrats on the article Kath! Well deserved, as many others have stated you truly are an inspiration for all those striving to maintain a healthy lifestyle in this hustle-bustle society.
Casey @ Double Scooped says
Awesome article! That’s quite an honor 😉
Marie says
I know that I’m going to get in trouble for saying this, but I have to agree with those who questioned the accuracy of being the “first food blogger”. I guess you mean Cristin works for “Self” magazine, so that doesn’t allow her the title of the first independent food blogger, but didn’t Roni start an independent food blog at a site called “weightwatchen”? Please know I’m not trying to start a huge argument, just asking a question.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
great article! you’re an inspiration, kath!
MelanieF says
What a wonderful article! Your blog was the first one I ever read. And I still read it today almost 1 year and half later. 🙂
Thanks Kath for giving us such a great blog!

What a great balanced lunch! I love the Oikos yogurt, but I’m curious on what you think of it? Do you like it better than the other greek yogurts (Chaboni or Fage?) I have been hooked on the Oikos but I’m so tempted to try these other brands.
Hope you had a wonderful day at work Kath!
Kath says
Allyson ,
Thanks for the links!!
Caroline ,
Thanks!! Go for it!!
Helen + Becci ,
LOVE my lunch bag. I got it in a boutique, but you can get them on Amazon. Built NY Gourmet Getaway. It holds a TON of stuff because it stretches and then folds flat when empty. Machine washable too. And the longest I’ve ever owned a lunchbox.
Katherine,
I think so.
Lauren ,
I do like it better than Fage. It’s smoothier. Chobani’s a tough call, but it’s not available everywhere – I like their flavors. Trader Joe’s is good too. It’s really a toss up on flavor, but I do love that Oikos is organic too.
Kath
Helen says
Thanks, Kath!
TJ’s plain nonfat was the first I had of Greek yogurt, ever, and I loved it mixed with honey!
MarathonVal says
What a cool article! I only recently found your blog (a few months ago), and so I had no idea you were the unofficial “pioneer” of the healthy eating blogs!

I love Oikos!
