Apparently a tornado may have come through our area last night?
Might as well have because Matt and I tossed and turned until about 1AM. I think it was the coffee at brunch 🙁 I was better off than he was, but I couldn’t sleep because he kept moving!! Needless to say, I set the alarm back an extra hour and canceled our workout. Sleep always overrides exercise! Always!
Good thing because we had plans to bike to the gym together and it poured all night and morning!
‘Twas a good day for a warm bowl of oatmeal 🙂
Today I made a large batch of oats for my office!! We made them on the stovetop and I’m transporting them in the crockpot. I sure hope they keep their consistency.
My adjusted recipe for 10 portions came out a wee bit too salty. Hope they don’t notice!
I put some pumpkin in my bowl, heated it up, and then scooped on what looked like my normal portion size of the whipped banana chia oats.
Topped with Emily’s Cocoa Molasses Granola, coconut butter (totally re-addicted to this!), coconut flakes, and a tbsp drizzle clump of Nuttzo (<– also re-addicted).
Served in a new Open Sky feature: a Sagaform bowl. Love the design of these pieces! I’m working to get more fun bowls and oatmealware in the shop 🙂
Also featuring a matching mug. The handle makes the piece!
Still no signs of froth when we make a double batch 😥
It all remains in the French press!
Don’t rock the table…coffee spills
The Oatmealmobile must be on her way!

You’re so right! Sleep always trumps exercise. I can’t function without my sleep. I really like that mug and bowl — so cute. Happy Monday 🙂
Jessica @ How Sweet says
How sweet of you to make oatmeal! 🙂
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
Wow you spoil your office :p
I can’t believe you (attempted to) slept through a tornado, that’s amazing! I always thought tornados were like a massive massive deal, cos we don’t get anything of the sort here…it sounds so scary!
Have a good day 🙂
Karla says
Ugh I didn’t sleep at all last night either! I let sleep trump exercise this morning too! Hope you have a good day!
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
Yum! I wish I worked in your office…
It’s raining here too and is supposed to all day today and tomorrow. sad!
Jenny says
Great oatmeal- hope it’s the start of a great day!
rustique says
Aww, oatmeal show and tell. I imagine you’d be the most fun to host that.
Christina says
Aww, that’s so cute that you’re bringing oatmeal in. You should get one of those little single stove tops at work!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
Yeah, if I have coffee past about 11:00, it keeps me up too. Crazy that our bodies are so sensitive like that. And kind of cool 🙂
Have a great Monday, Kath!
Marina says
I hope oatmeal will survive! 🙂
Joanne says
Too bad you missed your workout – always tomorrow.
Cute bowls. Good oats. It should be a terrific Monday.
Heather (www.runningwithsass.com) says
I heard about the storms up that way on the radio! no fun!

Andrea says
I bet your coworkers will be so happy! Love the combo you created this morning. Coconut is amazing!
have a great Monday!
Daniel says
Last time I had caffeine (4 years or so ago?) I got really hyper for about an hour and then crashed and got very shaky. It’s probably because I had quit soda cold turkey for a year before that and accidentally had one that day.
I hope your oats turn out well! A special occasion or just something fun and exciting for work?
Michele | aka Raw Juice Girl says
LOVE the new bowl and cup!
Yes, sleep is always most important!! 😀
Wish I was one of your coworkers- they’re lucky to get your oatmeal!!!! 😉
Mae says
Hey Kath, I just had a question Re: your different plate sets. Where do you store the different shapes and sizes of bowls, plates, and cups? I have trouble making anything accesible because everything is different sizes so they get burried. 🙁 Thank you!
(Oh, and it’s so sweet of you to make oatmeal for your work!)
Kath says
They do get burried and I have stacks that are falling over. But I just deal and try to re-organized every now and then!
Lauren @ Eater not a runner says
Love the matching bowl and mug…..very cute!
Mae says
Oh, and one more question (sorry!)… If you have time, could you make a chart with the oatmeal recipe for different servings? It would be such a helpful resource!
If you don’t have time or don’t want to, don’t worry about it! 🙂
Kath says
I don’t really have that information – I just do it in my head. Just remember it’s always equal parts oats, milk, water and banana to taste. Just go easy on the salt!
katherine says
Your colleagues must LOVE you for bringing oats to them!!
Ashley says
Glad you guys are okay after those storms–here in Raleigh the thunder and wind kept me awake for half the night, and I know it was worse over in the western part of the state!
Also, I love your bright red crockpot. 🙂
Paige(Running Around Normal) says
Oatmealmobile bahaha love that. So nice of you to cook oats for your office mates 🙂
Sorry about the sleepless nights. Hate those…
Heather @ Side of Sneakers says
Ah the tornado almost hit us! It was crazy how wide spread that storm was. We were ready to hunker down in the bathroom it got so bad at one point!!
Kath says
OH no!!
Mary Frances says
Geeze… really scarry – glad you were OK enough to be back online.
Lisa says
Hi Kath, I love reading your blog and seeing all the great recipes you use and meals you create! I live in Ireland so it is hard to get a lot of the ingredients but I have added them to my list for the next time I am State side! I was just wondering what the calorie content would be for the average portion of oatmeal you make for breakfast, including the various butters and toppings? Keep up the great work I look forward to your posts and I will definitely visit a Great Harvest on my next trip for some delicious bread!
Kath says
Hi Lisa! They are usually around 500 calories. Some days a little more, some a little less.
skinnyrunner says
So I had french press coffee for the first time this weekend. and it is good! strong but much better tasting than my old coffee pot.
Naomi (onefitfoodie) says
awww your the best for making them oatmeal!!! they will LOVE ITTT 🙂
jaclyn@todays lady says
Last night I woke up to thunder and heavy heavy rain!! Weather like that makes me feel so cozy!
I love how you’re bringing oatmeal to your coworkers!!! They’re gonna love it 🙂
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
That is one lucky office! I over slept today. I guess that was my body over riding the workout! Not a great way to start the week for me though…
Danielle (Coffee Run) says
That was really nice of you to make oatmeal for the office! It sure beats the usual muffins & doughnuts 😉
cara says
I hope the lack of sleep doesn’t get to you all day!
Heather says
I hope the lack of sleep doesn’t mess up your day!
Oatmeal to go sounds delicious – are you bringing toppings? I love that bowl – the red is so pretty!
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
I hate toss and turn nights. I do that tall the time and poor Hunni thinks I’m a dead fish.
Lauren says
The ladies you work with must seriously love you. I hope you brought them some good toppings, too!
caronae says
So cool that you made a giant batch of homemade oats for the office. I bet they’ll love it! And you’re right about sleep coming first. Waking up early to exercise WON’T energize me for my day if I am short on sleep!
Jenn (www.j3nn.net) says
Cute new bowl and cup! 🙂
Jenn
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Can’t wait to see how your office likes the oats!
And I LOVE that bowl! I have a serious cute bowl addiction.
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
Why didn’t I think of transporting oatmeal in a crockpot? I totally could have brought oatmeal to my brunch potluck after all….perhaps to the next one 🙂
HeatherBakes says
Aww, oats for the office! What a good coworker you are!
Good call on choosing sleep. You can always exercise later (at least that’s what I tell myself).
Beth @ DiningAndDishing says
Oh I hope you do add more pretty oat bowls to your shop…buying cute oatmeal bowls one at a time is one of my fave things to do! And I’m sure if anyone knows a good bowl for oats it’s you 🙂
Annie@stronghealthyfit says
That’s a very important lesson, choosing sleep over exercise. I just recently learned to go by that and not freak out about it. I think it comes with getting a little older and being more sensitive to sleep deprivation!
Hannah says
Are the oats for your coworkers to eat, or for you to have on hand at work? Are you taking all your condiments, too? Either way – brilliant idea!
Kalli@Fitandfortysomething says
lucky office mates……wish i had you around instead they bring donuts-yuck-well love but not good for me 🙂
Amy @ The adventures of a ginger grad student says
I hear you on the sleep before exercise. Last night I had a really rough time falling asleep and then when I finally did I tossed and turned all night, so I canceled my swim for this morning, and slept in a bit longer…though I may attempt that swim tonight, weather permitting. When I woke up this morning there was snow on the ground again, and now it’s freezing rain, I miss the hot spell we had last week where I could go out without a jacket 🙁
lo says
How good of you to bring a hearty, wholesome breakfast to all those lucky people in your office! If they complain about the salt, you can send a portion of that oatmeal over to me. I love mine a bit on the saltier side!
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
Glad you got in a full night’s rest! LOVE that bowl and mug set!
Kristilyn (singer-songwriter) says
I don’t even add salt to my oats … I tried a recipe once that had salt and I hated it! Too salty.
Hope your oats transfer okay!
K
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
curious to hear how the oats hold up in the crockpot
Mary Frances says
Me too… Did you have to add a little more milk or water, or were they just as perfect as when you first made them before putting into crockpot?
Kath says
They held up well with stirring – no additional liquids added!
Cole says
Tossing and turning is never fun. But I am so jealous of the people who get your oatmeal!
Ellen says
I love oats with salt…I gre up on them. I typically eat my oats with just salt every morning with a morning star soy sausage patty yum!
Chelsea (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) says
Crockpot oats sound like a great idea! Anxious to hear how they turn out. I live for your oatmeal toppings, Kath!
Rose-Anne says
Ah, such a cute set of dishes! I love red and white together–so crisp and colorful.
And now I’m feeling a twinge of regret that I didn’t have coconut butter on my oatmeal this morning…that stuff is amazing.
Jil says
Aww, I hate when you just can’t sleep! I agree sleep overrides exercise! The oats look fab and I bet your office will love ’em – the crock pot is a great idea.
jessica says
Hi Kath – I have been adding chia seeds to my stovetop oats right in the beginning when I add the water + milk to the oats. Should I be worried that boiling the chia seeds will reduce the nutritional value of the seeds? Thanks!
Kath says
Not that I know of. The oats shouldn’t be going above about 200 degrees (just under boiling) and I bet that’s OK
jessica says
Oops! I boil my oats!
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
What I nice thing to bring your special oatmeal for everyone, what was the occasion?
Kath says
No occasion in particular!
Carolyn @ lovinlosing says
Sleep always trumps exercise for me even thought I like working out in the mornings, I just can’t get up most of the time.
