If I had to choose a VERY favorite breakfast – in terms of flavor, enjoyment, versatility…this would be it.
Trader Joe’s Sunflower Butter (my very favorite nut butter ever) with overnight oats and a Great Harvest bran muffin crumble (although that is tied with granola topping).
I actually prefer OIAJ made with overnight oats to hot oats. Something about the sticky cold oats works really well with the sticky nut butter.
This jar was just SMASHING and took me a good 25-30 minutes to savor.
Inside The Jar
- 1/3 cup rolled oats, raw
- 1/3 cup plain yogurt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- Pinch salt
- Half banana
- Sprinkle cinnamon
- SUNFLOWER RESIDUE!!!
–> All in fridge overnight
This morning I added: some crumbled blueberry oat bran muffin top – YUM!!!
On the side: Coffee + Choffy blend. I really like the choffy as a way to reduce the caffeine but still get nice cup of coffee. And it imparts a nice dark chocolatey flavor!
Instead of biking into town today, I’m going to be flying!
Khushboo says
Cold OIAJ definitely trumps warm OIAJ! I must say, yours looks like quite the combo this morning! Have a great Friday 🙂
Kelsey says
What a perfect way to start out a Friday! I had one of your Dough Boy Smoothies this morning and it was delicious ;).
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
I will agree.. that OAIJ… especially in sunflower seed jar.. tops the chart!
Cait's Plate says
I JUST ordered some sunflower butter because I’ve been so jealous of yours! I also just had my very first overnight oats the other morning. The one thing I didn’t add in the night before was peanut butter, I gotta do that next time.
Hope you have a Nimbus 3000 for your fly to work 😉
HAPPY FRIDAY!
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
Totally agree with the OIAJ and I love that sunflower seed butter from TJs. Have a great Friday!
Krissie J says
Out of all the bloggers I follow, you have the cutest tableware, hands down. 🙂 I need to try OOAIJ.
Hope says
I’ve never had sunflower butter before. I’m curious to see what it tastes like! 🙂
Baking 'n' Books says
How much butter is left in the tub before you use it? Just the stuff on the sides?
Monika says
I’ve still yet to try OIAJ- how about OIAYC (oats in a yogurt container)? I’ve tried that 🙂
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
Haha dont cha just love how you feel after your fave breakie!? I’ve never eaten hot oats in a jar, I always liked em cold 🙂
Hannah says
It makes me happy that this is your favourite nut butter, because I can get amazing plain sunflower seed butter in Australia but can’t get any of the fancy flavoured ones you talk about 🙂
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday says
I don’t like the idea of hot oats in a plastic jar.
Colleen (What's Baking in the Barbershop) says
What a great looking breakfast! I think I need to recreate this for myself 🙂 Happy Friday!
katie @KatieDid says
Hot oats just don’t sit as well in my stomach as overnight. And nothing sits in my stomach quite as well as sunflower seed butter…. my favorite!!!
Will you be flying on your broom stick this morning? Jealous! 😉
Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing says
I finally got sunflower seed butter when we went to CA this year, but it was confiscated at the airport. 🙁 Should’ve thought about that. Oops! One of these days I’ll try it 🙂
Simply Life says
I love how many breakfast/oat ideas I’ve gotten from you and other bloggers – this sounds like one I need to try! Thanks!
Christine @ Burning It Off says
I’m so curious to try sunflower seed butter… but I already spend a fortune on nut butter, I’m scared to throw another one into the mix lol.
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
Trader Joe’s Sunflower Butter (my very favorite nut butter ever) = MINE TOO!!!!!!!
I love it. Like, it’s the best. And when you consider the great price, it even goes up another step in my mind 🙂
Your OIAJ looks….divine!
Have a fun day flying 🙂
Lindsay@ In Sweetness and In Health says
I need to try overnight oats! That looks amazing :). I’m kind of new to blogging and just wanted to say hello! I love reading yours!
Molly @ RDexposed says
Do you have a saddle small enough?
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
I’ve never done OIAJ overnight like that! I’m almost done with my almond butter, though. I know what I’ll be doing with it once it’s finished!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
TThat my fav OIAJ too – the extra bits of nut butter scraped from the sides MAKE the meal. I could dive into that 5th pic! 🙂
Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food says
yey for having your fav breakfast! 🙂 I have to say I don’t think any butter could top peanut butter for me! 🙂
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Oooh that does sound delicious!! I love all of your OIAJ combos Kath! I need to start going through my nut butters faster so I can make them too!
Nikki says
Looks delish, as always.
I still need to try OIAJ!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I’m trying to choke down my jar of sunflower seed butter, I’m just not liking it! Thinking of making granola with it to mask the flavor a bit 🙂
Krissy Murphy @ Shiawase Life says
I have to admit I was also underwhelmed after I saw so much blog love for the sunflower seed butter! I have grown to enjoy it a little more atop my oats, mixed with granola (like you wrote!!) but it’s a little too bitter for my taste. I was surprised, since I like eating sunflower seeds. The good thing about it was that it’s not as pricey.
Karen says
Yeah, I’ve tasted it but didn’t feel the love either. I am die-hard (crunchy!) almond butter fan, myself 🙂
Laurie says
So last night I was at Wegmans and I saw something on the shelf that I bought solely because I thought, Kath would love this…. Biscoff spread! Havent tried it yet
Christine (The Raw Project) says
TJ’s Sunflower butter is addicting, it sounds amazing with oats. Great way to start the day!
Andrea @ Onion in My Hair says
Kath – Your OpenSky ads are ALL over the Huffington Post today.
Love it!
Sarah says
Okay, that’s it. This week I’m trying over night oats for the first time and that’s final!
kate says
I would have to agree sunflower butter is my favorite and you cant beat the price @ TJS I always stock up when I go!
Liv @ The Salty n' Sweet says
I have an empty jar of sunflower buttah AND one of almond buttah. I need to get my butt moving on making OOIAJ!! I always forget to do it before I go to sleep 🙁
The Teenage Taste says
Wow. I can definitely see how this is your all-time favorite breakfast. I love using overnight oats for OIAJ. So yummy! 🙂
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
Overnight oats are SO refreshing in summer. Yum!
Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life says
I’ve just recently been eating the sunflower seed butter and I love it! Can you believe it was sitting in my pantry for over 4 months before I actually decided to open it? Talk about a crime…
Kathryn says
I had OIAJ this morning for the first time! Cold overnight oats in my nearly empty sunflower seed butter jar from Trader Joes. Thanks for introducing me to these delicious flavors.
Emily @ One Sweet Vegan says
I know what I’m buying the next time I’m at TJs!
Lindsay @ Pinch of Yum says
That’s a cool butterfly picture! And I haven’t tried overnight oats but I just posted today about my love for oats.
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
Love TJ’s Sunflower butter!! Its the best!!!
Amber says
I tried oiaj a couple weeks ago and I must have done it wrong. I mixed it with yogurt and milk and some cinnamon, but when I came back the next morning it was like cold cereal. It didn’t really absorb much at all. Is it supposed to be thick? I was bummed…
Kori says
I’ve experienced that from time to time. In order to avoid this result, I mix the milk/liquid with the oats first and allow them to sit and soak for a little bit before I stir in the yogurt. I hope this helps!
Amanda- The Nutritionist Reviews says
Oooh a butterfly! How nice : )
Hilary says
Perfect breakfast for summer! Although I like my breakfasts a tad more fruit-y than half a banana…still, I’d have no prob finishing that off! 😉
Chris says
I must get some sunflower seed butter soon! We have a whole #OOIAJ following on Twitter! lol Currently stuck on strawberries and cottage cheese in the mix for a cheesecake taste! Had to drop pumpkin for a while. Was turning orange! lol
Rebecca says
Oh my word that has got to be the best breakfast ever!! I absolutely adore TJ’s sunflower butter. My mom, sister and I went just wiped a jar clean in a week and ever since, my sister’s been begging to get more! We were putting it on everything :o)
Aine @ Something to Chew Over says
I do love overnight oats but I don’t know if anything can top hot oats for me! But then I’m in Ireland and cold food is less appealing here 😉
Thanks for introducing me to the joy of topping my breakfast with muffin crumble goodness! I often do it now.
Susan (Oliepants) says
You know I’ve never tried sunflower butter. It really seems like I’m missing out!!!
Becki @ Becki's Whole Life says
I do have to try these overnight oats. I have been topping my yogurt and berries with crumbled whole wheat biscuits (got the idea from you crumbling your muffins) and its my new favorite breakfast. I would have to imagine I will love this, too. I love Almond butter and I love Oats so I have to try! Thanks for the inspiration:-)
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I want to try sunflower butter!!!
lynn @ the actor's diet says
nothing like a good bfast to start the day – esp. one you love! sunbutter = love
Ann @ Day by Day says
I had the exact same breakfast yesterday morning! Trader Joe’s sunflower seed butter overnight oats in a jar! Only thing mine didn’t have was the crumbled oat bran muffin. And I was a little disappointed because there wasn’t really enough nut butter residue in the jar to enjoy it!
Jackie @ That Deep Breath says
OIAJ is definitely one of my favorite breakfasts! I’m dying to try sunflower butter
Emily says
I love cold overnight oats in a jar! They are sooo delicious and cold and gooey and stickey! Yummy. And good for you.
Johanna B says
Such a lovely moth on your window. A beautiful monarch butterfly landed on my shirt yesterday as I was leaving the library. I just stood there hoping he wouldn’t fly away too quickly. I’m so glad to live in a world that still has butterflies.
Mom says
Oh no! My daughter has turned into a giant moth! (Or is that a butterfly?)
Hillary says
Hey Kath,
http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/23/garden/home-brewing-need-a-beer-hit-the-basement.html?src=me&ref=general
Thought you and Matt would enjoy this!
KathEats says
Someday we will have a basement brewery that cool 🙂
Hillary says
Awesome, right?!
Leila @ Spinach and Skittles says
I’ve never tried OIAJ, because my husband keeps finishing jars and washing them. But today he left a nearly empty one on the counter and texted me to say that he left the jar for “Kath’s oatmeal or whatever.” Hahaha, now I can finally try it!
KathEats says
“Or whatever” haha. I can imagine it!!
Lauri (Redheadrecipes.com) says
I need to pick up a jar of Sunflower butter next time I’m at TJ’s! I’ve heard good things about it from several people!
(We are getting a TJ’s in Mt Pleasant in the next month or so!!!!!!)
Kathryn says
I wonder if TJ’s Sunflower butter is made in a nut-free facility? I found a brand at Wegmans that is, but I’d love to try TJ’s also and I bet it’s cheaper than $6/jar. My son was recently diagnosed with a peanut allergy, so this has been my go-to PB stand-in since I don’t want to keep peanuts in the house.
Jennifer says
I’ve never tried Sunflower butter. I bet it’s really good. Your flying comment cracked me up. Hope you have a great day!
Kris says
FYI Kath and KERF readers, Loft has shorts for $20 in stores and online today.
Catherine@happinessafterheartache says
I need to try sunflower nut butter. But I only remember when I’m reading about it on blogs-never in the supermarket. Where are my post-its???
Kelly @ Foodie Fiasco says
Hahaha. That sounds exactly like something I would do. I am really excited to try sunflower seed butter, too. By the way, I just went to your blog, I REALLY like it. Two boxes of butter to make Stuff! Looks like you got some great stuff (no pun inteneded) over there!
The Healthy Engineer says
I saw a moth like that in the gym yesterday and I seriously thought it was a hummingbird!! I got so freaked out about it that I even dreamed about spiders last night.
I know many people won’t know what I’m talking about, but the word “smashing” makes me think about The Wild Thornberries…:P
emily says
I know what you are talking about!!! 😀
Kelly @ Foodie Fiasco says
That looks incredible! Thank you so much for telling me about choffy. You always whip up something fantastic, Kath.
Laura Jane @ Recovering Chocoholic says
Sounds like a great way to start the day! I don’t know where you find all those jars. I don’t care for peanut butter or any substitutes, so I have less empty jars than most people.
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
I really prefer OIAJ to be cold too. Love scraping up the nut butter when it’s cold. It’s almost fudgelike!
rebecca says
ever have sunbutter crunchy? the crunch is different than that of pb/ab and i actually like the flavor better than tj’s.
PR_Cal says
Ah! Someone needs to send me some sunflower seed butter (preferably the TJS since everyone raves about it) because I can’t find any anywhere. I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. 🙂
Any Albertans out there know where to get some?
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
Cold and doughy is more appealing to me than hot oats, too! I’m not a “breakfast food” person, so my first meal is usually cold. 🙂
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
I don’t know why I’m so scared to try OIAJ. I like oatmeal but the thought of cold oatmeal just doesn’t sound all that appealing. I know I just need to give it a try! Whoever invented this concoction should get major props 🙂
Anna says
It doesn’t get goopy like cooked oatmeal, so don’t think of cold goo. It’s soooo worth trying- go for it!
Mrs A says
Hey! I just came into the bakery today and I LOVED IT!!! Matt was busy helping a customer and you had just gotten there on your bike and were helping someone, too, so I didn’t get a chance to say hi in person, but my sandwich (Monticello Garden on Honey Wheat) was AWESOME and the popeye bread was AMAZING! I bought a loaf of it and a cinnamon knot to bring home with me! I live 40 minutes west, but I can’t wait to come back in SOON!! Maybe after yoga on Tuesday mornings….. anyway, just had to tell you that you and Matt sure created an awesome bakery!!
KathEats says
YAY!!!!!!!
Mastering Public Health (@MasPublicHealth) says
I agree; I tend to enjoy cold breakfasts much more than hot ones (including oats), even during the winter. Yesterday, I had no ice and–believe me–discovered the hard way there is little that is more unenjoyable than a warm green smoothie!
Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] says
I had no idea that was your very favorite nut butter. I guess I will be finally adding it to my basket the next time I’m at Tj’s 😉
I wish it took me that long to savor breakfast. My favorite meal is always over before I know it!
Mary Legare Whaley says
Cold oats are amazing! I eat similar oatmeal + yogurt + fruit combos for dessert at night–waaay better than ice cream!
Holly says
I have that jar in my fridge right now– cannot wait to turn it into OIAJ!!!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I’ve never tried making OIAJ with overnight oats! I stick to hot oats because I like how the heat helps to melt the nut butter off the side of the jar. 😀
Flourchild says
My Overnight oats are sitting in my refrigerator right now! I can’t wait to eat them in the morning!
Now I need to find some Sunflower butter. We do not have a Trader Joes here..but I may beable to find it at Fred Meyers, in their health food section.
Julia H. says
Question: would omitting the chia seeds (I don’t use them) affect how the OIAJ comes out texture-wise? I think I’ve read that chia seeds absorb water, so I thought that might make a difference…
Thanks!
KathEats says
You can absolutely make them without chia, but they do add to the textuer
tour du lich mien tay says
I’ve never had sunflower butter before. I’m curious to see what it tastes like! 🙂
