You brush your teeth…ch ch ch-ch ch ch ch ch-ch.
Yeah, I have a cavity 🙁
I brush and floss 2-3 times a day, but I think I just have bad teeth. My cavity is small and on the surface – so at least that’s good. But the additional moolah I must fork over to repair it is not good news!
This meatloaf is good news:
It was amazing!
We used Better Homes & Garden’s Moroccan Meatloaf Recipe – which was chock full of raisins and fun spices. We swapped out the couscous for cooked millet that we had on hand and switched onion for red pepper (which was a great call!)
On the side: mustard greens sauteed in olive oil and maple syrup (always delicious!)
And No Knead Bread with buttah!
Super delicious and totally hit the spot after a long afternoon.
More good news: a Hail Merry chocolate macaroon for dessert and an upcoming Valentine’s day promotion that involves a cute tin and t-shirt.
Every night for the past few days I’ve been excited to go read in bed and every night something keeps me tied to my computer.
I must make time.
Stacy @ Every Little Thing says
I do the same, thinking about all teh good things I have to read, and then not making time for them 🙁
Allison @ Happy Tales says
Aw, I’m sorry to hear about your cavity! But I do believe that some people are just more prone to them than others. Don’t fret!
Also, that piece of bread looks like a peace symbol!!! In fact, I thought it was at first!
Jil @ Big City, Lil Kitchen says
Ohh that meatloaf looks great! Love the idea of raisins in there!
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
I don’t floss THAT often (just got in the habit of flossing 1x/day) but I know I have bad teeth. My momma is to blame!! Raisins in meatloaf sounds great.
Amanda (Eating Up) says
That meatloaf does look amazing! And I feel you on the teeth situation. I have bad ones too.
Karis says
I totally agree that some people just have bad teeth. I brush andfloss 2x/day and have a ton of fillings. My husband never flosses, brushes for about 20 seconds at night, and has never had a cavity in his life. It’s not fair.
Jess (Sweet Potato) says
Ugh, cavities are no fun! At least its just a surface one. Ive had a few of those… they are pretty easy. I love the idea of Moroccan meatloaf!
Evan Thomas says
Going to brush my teeth now! I must have great teeth, because I eat lots of sweets and don’t brush them often enough and haven’t gotten a cavity since 4th grade. I hope I didn’t just jinx myself.
Stacey (The Home-Cooked Vegan) says
I bet your house smelled amazing while that meatloaf was cooking! And boo! for your cavity, that stinks :/
Hope you find time to read tonight! I get so cranky if I don’t make time for ‘me’ during the day (and that almost always involves a book) 😉
Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn says
Dang, girl! I hate cavities, especially getting them filled!
When I was little, there was this song that a popular TV show character would sing (I honestly can’t remember who), and she would go “brusha, brusha, brusha!” and I can’t remember the rest of the song, but it was one of those songs that you would hear and would be stuck in your head forever!
missy says
Was it that toothpaste commercial in the movie Grease?
Amanda (The Nutritionist Reviews) says
I have been craving meatloaf! Looks like a neat recipe with the raisins.
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
I really need to floss more. Thanks for the reminder 🙂
Lindsey says
uuuggghh that’s exactly what happened to me last week! I’ve never had one in my life and I brush all the time. Still, cavity 🙁
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
Sorry about your cavity – Im a faithful brusher, but I could floss more often!
Emily @ One Sweet Vegan says
I’m ditching the husband tonight and going to bed early to read. I love my alone reading time.
Clare @ Fitting It All In says
Moroccan Meatloaf sounds so yummy – my parents would love it!
Balanced Healthy Life says
Sorry to hear you have a cavity. That’s never fun. At least your dinner looked really great!
Josephine @ Creating a Positive Life says
Booo I have a cavity too. First one in YEARS and I have pretty good dental hygiene practices. I am off to the dentist tomorrow 🙁
How do you guys handle health insurance being self-employed? Will anything change with GH?
KathEats says
We have private insurance through Blue Cross and have had it since I went back to school. It’s really not too expensive.
Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) says
We’re both suckers for meatloaf in this house. I really like the less common spices they used. May have to give this a whirl… possibly ‘mini-meatloaf-afy’ them 🙂
Meg says
Raisins in meatloaf?! Think I could sub for another dried fruit? Raisins and I don’t usually get along 😉
KathEats says
Sure!
sarah (sarah learns) says
boo on the cavity. i just went to the dentist on friday and i have one too! i haven’t had a cavity since i was 10 either. i brush/floss multiple times a day too! grrr.
i love raisins in savory dishes. that meatloaf sounds great! 🙂
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday says
Dammit. Now I`m going to be singing that song all night. It`s too catchy.
Christin@purplebirdblog says
That meatloaf sounds like such a fun switch from the norm. Sorry to hear about your cavity!
Valerie @ City|Life|Eats says
So sorry about the cavity. My husband is like that – takes great care of his teeth, but still gets cavities 🙁
Jeni @ stepping out says
I know exactly what you mean about the cavities. I’ve had that a couple times with my dentist (who’s sort of my uncle…way too complicated to explain). I have a Ishouldlikeyou–hate relationship with him. 😀
I once got a lecture on the “Bloom Effect” (teenagers drinking too much soda and eating sugary snacks) when I specifically told him that I didn’t drink soda or fruit juice or eat candy and etc.
That meatloaf looks amazing!
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
Yum! Love the raisins in there!
Krissy - Shiawase Life says
that chocolate macaroon looks scrumptious! mmm…and one cavity isn’t bad 🙂 last year…i had…NINE! UGH.
Stacie @ Imperfectly Healthy says
Awwww, I miss the “brush your teeth” song! I haven’t thought of it in so long!!
Carla @ Will Run for Health says
This is embarrassing: I faintly remembered the brush your teeth song…but just YouTubed it to bring it back to memory. Yikes!!
I don’t do as good of a job as I should taking care of my teeth. I skip cleanings, don’t floss everyday, and chew hard candy. I need to do a better job!
Tina says
I have horrible teeth-heredity. I use Pronamel toothpaste & my dentist told me to use Act Flouride rinse to get more flouride on my teeth. I’ve heard the horror stories about flouride, but I’d really rather have my teeth. Is it possible you’re brushing too much & wearing away the enamel? I’m no expert. Anyway, my husband has really good teeth, so I really hope our kids get his!
Lee says
I feel like I always have a cavity when I go to the dentist. I don’t get it! I brush my teeth and even remember to floss (mostly).
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
I feel your pain! I brush 2-3 times a day, floss, and use mouthwash yet still had to have 8 root canals after getting cavities *under* previous fillings!
Justeen @ Blissful Baking says
Ohh meatloaf with raisins sounds sooo delicious! I’m not a meatloaf lover, but this version sounds great!
Theresa says
What are you reading??? Or trying to read???!
KathEats says
Lonesome Dove
Heather says
Cavities are the worst!
I’ve been making myself read before bed – even 3 pages – every night for the past month. I think that I’ve been sleeping better because of it. My mind “turns-off” and I’m not having as many “stress” dreams.
I’m making myself make time – I think its worth it!
MonsteRawr says
I, too, have been trying to make more time to read. My next book on the docket is the Omnivore’s Dilemma. Here’s hoping there are many enthralling pages in both our futures!
Leila @ Spinach and Skittles says
Ugggh no matter how much I floss and brush I still have a cavity every time I see the dentist. Must be genetic or something. My last one was also a surface and the filling process only took 5 minutes! Maybe they will bill you by the minute and it will be cheaper? 🙂
Katy (The Singing Runner) says
🙁 Boo for cavities! Sorry to hear about it!
Camille says
Bummer about the cavity, but at least dinner looks amazing!
Anja says
I know what keeps me tied to my computer everynight! Your blog! Seriously. But I still make time to read in bed afterwards, which comes back to haunt me every morning when my alarm goes off at 4am to go to work. 🙂 gotta have some guilty pleasures in life though.
KathEats says
🙂 Thanks!
Marie@feedingfive says
I feel for you. I have soft teeth and no matter how much I brush or floss (always) I have had a ton of cavities, root canals, and huge fillings. One filling was so big that when I did Invisilign it shifted my tooth and the whole tooth fell out. Cute huh? I had to wait until the Invisilign was done before getting my new tooth. That will be next week and I can’t wait.
KathEats says
oh no!
Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says
i love the opening graphic. i can almost “hear” the brushing sound effect from your ch ch ch-ch ch ch ch ch-ch. 🙂
stacey-healthylife says
I love the addition of the raisins in the meatloaf.
Annette says
I don’t love meatloaf….and raisins….. 🙁
Lauren Grier says
Have you ever tried sealing your teeth? I had this procedure done 10 years ago and have never had a cavity….and I am not a good flosser. Might be worth checking out. Plus, the procedure takes less than an hour and is pain free!
KathEats says
Do you mean sealants?
Lauren Grier says
Yup! Sorry for the confusion!
P.S. Love your blog:)
Beatrix @ Beaglebea says
I too brush every morning and night and floss (almost every night) but I still get cavities. I need to find myself a dentist though, I have had bad experiences and have been avoiding going becuas they screwed up my jaw when I had my wisdom teeth extracted almost 12 years ago. (I now suffer from TMJ syndrom). It’s on my list of things to do.
Jessica @ The Virtual Scrapbook says
No Knead Bread sounds so good right now! Sorry about the cavity, I do totally believe that some people have bad teeth. And some never ever floss and barely brush and have never had a cavity. Argh!!
lynn @ the actor's diet says
it’s so frustrating when you floss, brush, use the expensive products and STILL get cavities. which happens for me too.
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
Love all the flavors in the meatloaf!
Gill (snaxandthecity) says
I remember that song!! haha that made me laugh.
That meatloaf recipe sounds a lot like bobotie, a Sth African dish my mum makes. So good!
Katie says
Cavities stink : p sorry to hear you have one, but good to hear its not that bad ; p
I used to hate meatloaf as a child and my mom made it alot, me and my sisters would fear the nights she made it, lol! This looks soooooooooo good, I wouldn’t fear eating this meatloaf ; )
Michele @ Healthy Cultivations says
The meatloaf looks really interesting. The addition of somewhat non-traditional ingredients gives such new life to seemingly old hat dishes.
[email protected] says
You just moved and have a new dentist, right? I did the same and went with my neighbor’s recommendation for a dentist, I was a little skeptical of where he pointed I had a cavity, got a second opinion and my teeth were fine. I have awful teeth and have spent a ton of money and time at dentist. I’m now very skeptical of their care. Just sayin’ be careful, there are medical providers out there that have tossed ethics out the window and we are paying the price… 🙁
I don’t need a dentist ruining a perfectly good tooth for his gain.
KathEats says
I saw the cavity and heard it beep on the density tester, so I trust their opinion
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
What a neat spin on meatloaf! I love adding dried fruit to dishes.
I haven’t had time to read in bed lately either. Too much studying to do! 🙁
Lauren says
Awww, that’s too bad about the cavity but at least you have meatloaf like that to take the painful news away. This looks amazing!
Carly says
I am just like you with my teeth! I floss and brush multiple times a day and I always wind up with a cavity. My mom thinks that maybe one of her prenatal vitamins (no longer on the market) may have something to do with this!?!? Luckily I went to the dentist this week as well with a clean bill of health – I was shocked! Good luck with the filling 🙁
Lily @ Lily's Health Pad says
I don’t eat a lot of meat…it just isn’t that appealing to me. But for some reason, I’ve really been craving a good meatloaf these days!
RhodeyGirl says
The cavity isn’t your fault! If you’re brushing and flossing consistently and eating the right things then it is just your genetics. Don’t despair! 🙂 🙂 🙂
KathEats says
: )
Kim @ girlevolving says
I think you can be predisposed toward cavities, so don’t feel bad! My mom is always good about flossing and brushing and using mouthwash and she just has more dental problems. 🙁
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Meatloaf is one of my most favorite meals. I’m not even a big meat eater, but I think I could eat it every day if I didn’t love so many other things too. 😉
Sorry to hear about the cavity! I have the same issue with my teeth, no matter how well I take care of them. Not fun! 🙁
Katherine: Unemployed says
gotta change out that brush every 3 months; love it
Heather says
I have that same issue with my teeth! I rinse, floss and even brush with a rx toothpaste! So frustrating. You should ask your dentist about the prescription toothpaste if you are not against fluoride.
Shannon Ditto says
Hi Kath!
I have been an everyday reader of your blog for the last few months. Just wanted to say how much I love reading about all of your adventures, especially food adventures! I have also enjoyed many of your recipes as well:) The meatloaf looks fantastic and will def being trying to make that soon!
Shannoon
KathEats says
Thanks Shannon!
Jessica says
that’s too bad about the cavity 🙁
I have to find a new dentist in my area… but I’m so scared of the dentist!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
Meatloaf has never been my thing, but this looks awesome! You should rename it: Not Your Mamma’s Ketchup-laden Meatloaf. 🙂
I do the same thing with the computer at night. Maybe I need a computer curfew?!
CaSaundra says
I still don’t have a cavity and I am almost twenty–fingers crossed I can live to be 80 without one 😉 Hope all is well Kath!
Caitlin says
I had never really had meatloaf until a few days ago. Something about the word meatoaf just really freaked me out. I even made up this awful excuse in college of why I couldn’t eat the meatloaf my roommate made! ahh 🙂
Anyway I made turkey meatloaf a few days ago (from Candace Cameron’s..DJ from Full House new book), and it was awesome! Now I wonder why I was so afraid of it!
KathEats says
So cool she has a book!
Marija-The Healthiest Habits says
I understand you totally 🙁 My teeth look great but are prone to cavity even if I brush them after every single meal and floss before going to bed. Bad luck, I guess 🙂 and because of that-we have to see our dentist more often.
You meat loaf looks amazing indeed!
Kara says
I love the idea of that recipe! Meatloaf is one of my favorite things, so I will have to try that out. Thanks for the idea!
Melomeals: Vegan for $3.33 a Day says
millet is soo good in loaves.. and mustard greens with maple syrup? Hell yeah.
Paige @Running Around Normal says
Ahh that’s disheartening that you got a cavity even though you brush AND floss regularly! What a bummer. Sometimes you can only do what ya do!
Hope says
I’m sorry to hear about the cavity! I hate going to the dentist. I have been avoiding going for a while now. I’m finally going at the beginning of March and I am terrified! I am so afraid that I have a million cavities. 🙁 I hope I don’t.
Kiran says
Sorry about the cavity and glad it’s only the surface. Time for my doc’s appt! 😉
I can relate to your qualm trying to catch up on book, mine is the same. Hoping to return to book reading habits soon!
Jess @ atasteofconfidence says
I love the toothbrush song- sorry about your cavity!
Sara @ myfancytuna.blogspot.com says
That meatloaf looks SO good! I wish my roommates appreciated raisins, especially in savory dishes – I love the contrast of flavors, but they think it’s weird. Boo!
rae says
google Dr. Ellie (dentist in Rochester, NY) – and read her blog about how small cavities can, in fact, ‘heal’ if you follow the system that she sets forth . . . it’s worth a try!
Thealogian says
Not to seem like a crazy person, but when I was uninsured and had a cavity, I asked the dentist if it was possible to have the filling (or a similarly surfacy, shallow cavity) without the shots. He agreed and it only pinched, seriously! Not bad at all. So, when I was insured and got another cavity, I asked if it was okay to do it without as well because I really hate shots in the mouth, plus you are all numb for hours afterward and drolling. My new dentist agreed and once again, NOT BAD AT ALL. I don’t know your exact situation re insurance, I know you are starting your own GH Bakery, but if you are paying out of pocket and if it isn’t deep, consider foregoing the shots. I believe I saved almost $100 when I was uninsured. Peace & Health!
KathEats says
He mentioned this, but I am WAY TOO SCARED!!
