We started the day Leave It To Beaver style with a gourmet breakfast of Raspberry French Toast and Coffee.
I dipped slices of Great Harvest Flax Oat Bran in egg and then dredged them in a dry mixture of ground flax seeds, coconut and cinnamon
French press a’brewin’
Toppings included 1/2 a container of Vanilla Oikos each (coupon purchase 😉 ), fresh raspberries, sliced peace, coconut sprinkle, blob of Almond Haze and a drizzle of this guy Coulis de Framboise from Dean & Deluca. I’ve been waiting forever to use this on French toast!
Matt loved it <3

Gather Your Calculators
You guys know that I no longer count calories or keep a food journal (post coming up about weaning!) but I will always support calorie counting as good method for weight loss. Here’s a post on just that: Crunching Numbers.

Busy day ahead! I’m going to athletic conditioning with Victoria around 11 and we’ll be a bit rushed to get to lunch. I may have to post via iPhone!
Have a great Monday

What a difference your new camera makes! All of the pictures are beautiful!
Wish I had those french toast for breakfast, too…

i Love this week’s Gather post on Calorie Counting. I’ve been feeling the same way! Counting doesn’t equal obsession and I’ve been a little annoyed with the bad rap it gets on other blogs. Thanks for putting my feelings into words.
When i count, it’s like my budget for the day. I plan out my meals and suprisingly i’m much more satisfied and I can conciously enjoy what I eat throughout the day. I see how I can stretch them out and take full advantage of my food choices. Without counting I am not nearly as mindful about how much I eat.
Foodie (Fab and Delicious Food) says
Mmmm, that looks so good!
Have a great day!

Hey Kath- You are a wonderfully conscientious eater but also seem to keep things real, and balanced, which I love and respect. This is why I’d love to hear your take on french press coffee and findings that it may raise cholesterol more so than just regular coffee. What are your thoughts?

Loving the french toast action! I’ve got to pick up some bread and eggs because if I see ONE more french toast post, I’m going to have to cave and eat NON-healthy french toast 🙂

I also lost weight by calorie counting, but do not count anymore. I think counting is good when you’re trying to lose for the first time because it retrains you to understand what appropriate portion sizes are.
Now I go by more of a “needs” method. I think – have I gotten enough protein / grains / vegetables / fruit today? and adjust accordingly. I’ve also found that if I always make veggies my top priority, I do pretty well!
JENNA says
🙂 I love your bfast! It looks so gorgeous!! I’m dying to try some of that Coulis de Framboise!

Looks great! I am hooked on your oatmeal pancake recipe right now, but French toast is next to try! Random question…the pancakes are basically the same as what I use for oatmeal except with eggs instead of protein powder, but keep me full WAY longer than my regular oats. Is there some science that the protein in eggs is more satisfying than other types of protein?
Julie @savvyeats says
Your breakfast looks delicious!
I’m so excited for your “weaning” post — I did calorie counting for awhile, but became way too obsessed with my “number.” I think I’m too much of a perfectionist for calorie counting to work for me long-term! Only recently have I convinced myself to not count, and just eat when I’m hungry and eat mostly healthy foods.
Leianna says
That breakfast is amazing, love the combo of greek yogurt, fruit and almond butter!

I love that french toast, wow! You could serve that in a restaurant (and I would order it!)

Your pictures are beautiful! I never think of French Toast as a week-day meal but it really isn’t that difficult to make. I love the idea of fresh peaches on top – I need to go to the Farmers’ Market tomorrow and see if I can find some.

Angie All The Way says
Kath, thank you for writing that article!
I agree with you 100% and because I am still on my weight loss journey I have found it necessary to count, otherwise I was not having success. I consider myself to have turned a new healthy leaf on this road which has so far led me to be 120 light lighter! And it has bothered me that many healthy living bloggers have mostly been of the opinion that counting calories would most likely lead to obsessive behaviour (in a bad way) and while I understand that to be true for many people, it did make me question my own efforts (even though successful) on the inevitable long road of having lots to lose.
Counting works and shouldn’t always be associated with a negative behavour, Great job!

I cannot wait to read the post on weaning myself off my food journal!! I’ve been maintaining a 115 pound weight loss for six years and i STILL keep a food journal – I think only because I’m nervous I’ll go overboard without it. I actually decided last night that I’d give a go this week to not using it obsessively – to just eating intuitively and seeing what happens! I’m sure I have the skills and habits in place to do it, especially after so many years of practice, but it’s still scary!!

I think calorie counting is essential for anyone not eating completely real food. For people that do, only if necessary. So thanks for posting the article 🙂

I LOVED you article. As a math major and an organizational junkie, I completely understand about the need to count and keep track of things. Although I’ve stopped calorie counting(only been a few days now!), I completey support the habit. It has totally made me aware of portion sizes and brought out healthy habits in me. A lot of people get mad when they hear the phrase, “A calorie is a calorie”. Their justification for getting mad is because they think people who follow this ideology fill themselves up with crap instead of wholesome food for the same number of calories.
It is not so for everyone.
When I say a calorie is a calorie, I mean it to say: be careful with portion sizes. Eating 13 apples instead of a big mac and fries is still going to make you gain weight because you are consuming a lot calories for one meal.
Ok, I’m done. Sorry for the long comment!
Lele says

i am chewing on my computer screen right now, MAJOR HOLY YUM!
i really like the exchange system compared to calorie counting once you learn it, it’s just more freeing and then you don’t feel trapped with counting yet you will always still be in the same ball park. i’ve been writing up a post on it….just a ponder :p have a wonderful day!
Tay says
Oh WOW Kath – that French toast looks beyond words. I’ve never thought to dip it in a flax/cinnamon mixture after the eggs. Good idea 🙂 And you can barely see the bread under all those goodies on top!!
About the calorie counting – I also say it’s necessary for weight loss. Along with food journals. I do so much mindless snacking, and I see my mom doing it too. And without food journals, you really really underestimate how much you eat. Handfuls of this or that leave you mind in a flash, but if you record them, they’re permanent.
Amanda says
That breakfast looks sooooo good! Yum!
Kath says
Thanks everyone!!
Holly,
Unless you have a clinical reason to be worried about your cholesterol, I wouldn’t avoid french press. Plus, I always drink it with oats, which lower cholesterol so it’s a neutral effect if there is one!
ellie,
Well eggs have fat too, so that could be contributing. Fat keeps me full longer than protein. And I have a personal theory that animal proteins are more satiating than plant ones. But it hasn’t been properly tested 😉

Also, thanks for the link about counting calories. I’ve just recently re-started counting because I am hoping to lose a bit more weight, so I appreciate any information.
