For the longest time I’ve used my shallow white soup bowls for salads. I think that I have been using the wrong bowls for a long time! (Perhaps that explains my distaste for salads this year?) BECAUSE… I’ve started to use a big glass mixing bowl for salads and suddenly I like them again!? I am weird, I know.
I think it’s something about the combination of deeper sides, volume inside the bowl, and the way the ingredients fall back down that makes for a better salad eating experience!
Note my hand for scale!
The first salad I enjoyed in this big ole bowl you have already seen. It had arugula, a white wine and Dijon dressing, feta, slivered almonds, and sardines.
Second on the list was leftover Cook Smarts cod and pearled couscous. (Plus more arugula and that delicious butter sauce on top!) I heated up this fish, so this was more like a grain bowl! : )
And lastly, greens with tuna and sardine salad, raisins, almonds, and a lemony white wine dressing.
Do you have a dedicated salad bowl or a favorite at-home salad eating trick? Let me know!

Salads are my favourite meals, but I usually just eat them in whatever plate or bowl’s handy. No fancy glass bowls for me haha!

I love big bowls for salads! My boyfriend got a cobb salad at a restaurant this past weekend and it was SO skimpy. Small bowl, hardly any lettuce and meat– it was sad. Bring on the BIG salads!

I love big salads too ^^ they’re very filling and satisfying to even look at.

It seems so silly but the bowl makes a difference! Just last night I was asking my husband where our Ikea Vardagen bowl was, it is my favorite to mix up a salad in and than divide it on our plates!

I’m sure you’ve mentioned this before, but remind me: do you make those salad dressings yourself? Mine never turn out the way I want, and I’m sure a lot of it is just trial and error (I don’t loooove making salad dressings, so I usually end up buying them).
KathEats says
Yes I’ve been making them myself because I don’t like most premade dressings. I do love the Cindy’s Kitchen Caesar though!

I know this is kind of a silly question, but can you link to the bowls you purchased? I’m definitely in the market for a bigger bowl too- your salads look great! Thanks

They are these glass nesting mixing bowls. So great for both food prep and serving!

A big bowl that lets you mix the dressing 100% is always a favorite! Plus, the glass let’s you see all the goodies inside, yum!

BIG BOWLS TOTALLY MAKE A DIFFERENCE! Also, there need to be lots of things in my salad so I don’t feel like I”m eating diet food!

I think it makes a huge difference! Otherwise, there wouldn’t be much of a selection or market for kitchenware. We eat with our eyes first, and presentation can be a huge variable. These salads look great!

Yep, I have two colored bowls of the same size that I use for salads. I like being able to mix everything up without it falling all over the counter.

I love this idea! Maybe a big bowl will get me to eat more salads!!

Yes! Big bowls are the key to good salads for me, too. I think in a smaller bowl everything feels cramped, arugula will fling out an almond sliver as you pull it out, the dressing can’t get fully mixed.

I love using mixing bowls for salads! I also really like that you can actually stir it all around without making a mess and getting dressing everywhere!

My favorite salad trick is to toss it in a big bowl beforehand, and then serve it in a clean bowl. All of my favorite salad places toss the dressing with the salad/veggies before serving it and it just tastes SO much better than mixing it as you go. Plus, I always end up flinging food as I eat if I don’t pre-toss!

I’m like you and have to have hot/cold elements in my salad. Usually sauteed veggies (purple cabbage and kale are my favorite) on top of crisp, cold romaine lettuce. These look fantastic!

I’m all for a great salad when I’m eating out, but I never make them at home. I can’t even think about it without getting itchy. I’m not really sure why. Maybe all the chopping of different ingredients, mixing, the time it takes…

Yum! My salad “rules” are – biggest bowl as possible and cutting everything up small so that you get as many different textures and flavours in each bite as possible 🙂

I ALWAYS use big glass bowls to eat my salads! I just don’t feel like I have any room in anything else, and I need the deep sides to chop and mix and keep all the ingredients inside! I do not enjoy restaurants that deliver salads on plates, because it’s ultimately a mess (to me). oh I’ll eat them, but big bowls for the win! Also, I want to know the ingredients of the lemon wine vinaigrette dressing! It all looks so yummy! 🙂
KathEats says
It was a mix of flavored herby olive oil, white wine vinegar, dijon mustard, salt and cracked pepper, garlic powder. All unmeasured!
