Our yard
Today’s weather was GORGEOUS! Close to 70 degrees and sunny.
I could not resist giving a run a try!!
But not without a stop to Harris Teeter for groceries and blister Band-Aids. (Also put on my thinnest socks! I think thick cotton socks are what caused this in the first place.)
I set off on a run with the intention of staying very close to my house. I did a figure 8 of about 3 miles so I was never more than 1.5 away.
The run was great!!
5.22 miles in a swift pace. I averaged about an 8:50 mile. (Mile 3 was all uphill – good practice for my hilly half!)
The good news is that my blister did fine!!! No pain at all.
In fact, the title of this post was going to be "three cheers for Band-Aid"
HOWEVER – when I took my shoe off after the run I noticed that the band-aid had SLIPPED (despite its claims for staying on through all sports and showers!) I would have been in trouble had I gone a few more miles. SO glad I decided to roll in at 5 and not 7 or 8.
BOO BAND-AID!! Going to try to return the box to Harris Teeter, which has a pretty good return policy.
Snacks this afternoon were my apple from lunch (never got around to eating him) and a PB&J LaraBar that JESSIE gave to me at the brunch last month!!!!!!!!!! Love the flavor, but it’s still not my very favorite 🙂
Due to the awesome spring weather…we grilled!!!
I picked up radicchio and asparagus at Harris Teeter to go with the very last of the Apple Lentil Walnut muffins. These lentil loaves were SO GOOD as leftovers, and as you can see, I got my effort’s worth out of them. Will definitely make them again!
Also grilled some tofu and carrot for my lunch tomorrow!! I just threw it in and am so glad I did because I have a killer salad for tomorrow!
The radicchio and asparagus just got a little olive oil and salt and pepper. More and more I just want to taste the flavorful veggies!
Wanted to have all my blog work done by 8 so I could veg on the couch (with laundry to fold!) but looks like I’m not going to make it to the TV tonight. We did finish The Office – so cute!
G’nite!
Katie says
Darn! I meant to make those lentil muffins this weekend and forgot. They do look incredibly yummy and I agree with you…muffin tins are the way to go. Love how cute they turn out! Thanks for the reminder.
Danielle (Coffee Run) says
Good job on the run 😀 Those are the bandaids I have except mine will not COME OFF! Seriously…it like fuses to my heel.
The veggies look amazing
Annie@stronghealthyfit says
Looks like an amazing dinner! Glad you had a good run. You are SO lucky to be having such nice weather! It takes so long for spring to arrive in NH. I need to move somewhere warm 🙂
Kamaile says
I’ve heard moleskin is great for blisters but I haven’t tried it yet. I’ve been told it’s in the same section that bandaids are in. Can’t wait to grill again! YUM!
Gabriela says
What gorgeous tulips! I can’t wait until spring is in full bloom 🙂 Whenever I get blisters, I just tape them with foam tape…something I learned from my ballet years! It never slips and doesn’t hurt to rip off, just make sure you take it off as soon as you’re done your workout to let the blister breathe! Have a great night 🙂
Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] says
Yay for Spring tulips!
Question: What type of sports bras do you wear?
Kath says
Well in that photo I had a tank top under my top and a Champion sports bra. But I love my GAP sports bra for running. It’s rather grandma looking but SUPER tight and great. I need a new one!
Allison says
I get chafing across my chest if I run more than 10km. I’ve tried lots of different sports bras and they all hurt. Do you ever get this on longer runs? Any suggestions. My podiatrist suggests wearing 2 pairs of thin socks for blister problems. I think it kind of works.
Maryann says
i get the chafing on my chest too! putting some vaseline on my chest where my sports bra rubs works every time.
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
I’m so happy to see you in running in shorts! That means spring is on the way!!!
Moleskin works the best for running blisters 🙂
Ann @ Appalachian Appetites says
Oh flowers! Come on Spring!!
I’m watching the Bachelor wedding tonight. Anyone else!? Though I probably should be getting some work done as well!
Good luck with everything, Kath!
Karla says
Bandaids never stay on!
Those flowers are beautiful! Spring is almost here!!
Carly says
Get Feetures socks! I bought a new pair of running shoes on Saturday. The girl at the store convinced me that I could do my 7 mile run on Sunday in them if I wore Feetures socks (not cotton). She was so confident in them that she even GAVE me a $10 pair of socks to try out. FANTASTIC!!! No blisters, no pain, new shoes! I ended up ordering 5 more pairs on Amazon because they were only 6.25 apiece.
haya says
cotton socks are the devil. you shouldn’t ever be wearing them for runs!! get proper running socks.
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Ahhh…so jealous of your beautiful weather and yard! 😀 Spring is such a lovely time of year.
Glad to hear your blister was totally pain-free today! I used to go hiking a lot and ended up with blisters all the time. Since there was no way around hiking down a mountain, I had to rely on finding a way to keep the blister pain free while still walking on it. The solution? Moleskin! I can’t say it makes everything *completely* pain free, but it sure helps. 😀
jaclyn@todays lady says
Yay for spring weather!! Your flowers look great and so does that dinner!!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
such pretty purple flowers!!! i love radicchio by the way…so bitter and delicious! i’m a huge fan of salt + pepper roasted veggies 🙂
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
Signs of Spring! Love them. 🙂
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
We had asparagus tonight also. It was so good, thin and crisp.
Jennifer says
Yeah def. no cotton socks- or sports bras for that matter. No cotton when running! Running socks can be expensive but you can go to Target and get thin, non cotton athletic socks, 2 pairs for about $5.
mx says
hello from singapore. i like reading your blog, and you look really great after your run!
Kath says
Thanks!
Lori (Finding Radiance) says
I am so jealous of the flowers! I know we have a few more weeks before the tulips start to come up.
Katie says
moleskin for blisters (only thing I use in the backcountry) and never wear cotton socks, though I think your contingent warned you on that one. smart socks are worth every penny.
Anais says
I was so disappointed with the PB&J flavor but it’s actually really grown on me! It’s one of my faves now 🙂
Lisa @bakebikeblog says
Congrats on the run – despite the bandaid issues 🙁
I LOVE the look of that grilled tofu! I bet it tasted great too!
Pam (@ TotalHealthCounseling) says
Your dinner looks beautiful and delicious!
Pretty flowers in your yard, Spring is in the air 🙂
Kath says
Re. MOLESKIN: I have it but it doesn’t stay put!! Do I need a bigger piece? Smaller piece? I guess my feet move around a lot!
Izzlecanoe says
Hi Kath, Love your Blog and those flowers. You could try tincture of benzoin to make the skin sticky around the blister before you add the moleskin. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tincture_of_benzoin Just don’t get it on the blister itself as it stings like hell (its antiseptic so it wouldn’t actually do any harm, but it would hurt). I used to have the same problem making moleskin stick in some old hiking boots that were not exactly breathable, and thats the trick I used. The other thing is to get socks that wick moisture away.
Michele | aka Raw Juice Girl says
Yay for the pretty flowers – spring is almost here! 😀
LOVE asparagus. Yum!
Glad you enjoyed a run on this beautiful day.
Maggie @ Fit.Fun.Food says
Your pictures are beautiful! hooray for vegging! Hope you get some tomorrow!
Mara @ What's for Dinner? says
You must try moleskin. I wear it all the time with my dress shoes all day, then it stays on through my long walks!
Salah@myhealthiestlifestyle says
I really need to try those lentil loaves…..what exactly does it taste like? Is it supposed to imitate meatloaf?
Lauren says
Cross my fingers, but I have yet to get a big blister from running and I hope I can avoid it forever! Sorry your band-aid crapped out on you. 🙁
Heather @ Side of Sneakers says
Beautiful flowers!!! And beautiful grilled veggies too 🙂
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
Congrats on the good run! Sucks that the bandaid had slipped after all 🙁
Sara @ ActiveGal says
I just stopped by the grocery store tonight for blister band aids as well. I haven’t tried them yet, but hopefully they will help my foot not hurt so bad when I am running. Stupid blisters, you use the wrong socks ONE day and you are punished for the rest of the week!
Sarah R says
Oh man, I can’t wait for the flowers to start blooming. It was so nice here today (aka 55 degrees!) that the dog got two walks. I also can’t wait for grilled asparagus. So yummy!
Gina Candy says
Kath, try Nexcare bandages by 3M (active extra cushion) if you can find them in your area. They DO NOT come off regardless of the sneakers/socks, sweat, etc. They also come in assorted sizes so will cover just about anything you need to cover.
Abby says
The fact that you’re running in shorts gives me hope! Spring is around the corner! And those flowers—lovely!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Glad you had a good run!! I had blister issues at one point that would NOT go away and I found one brand that works wonders… but I can’t remember the name at the moment.
LOVED the weather today! Totally gorgeous and would have been perfect for grilling. Might have to do that tomorrow…
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
OMG, FLOWERS!!!!! So pretty! 😀 Spring really is here!
Congrats on the run, and I’m glad those blisters didn’t give you trouble. I’d suggest trying Band-aid Toughstrips. Those things hold like crazy!

Kath says
Welcome!!
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
Band-aid makes two different shapes and the other one (not the one you purchased) is wonderful. I’ve had them on my heals since Tuesday last week through showers, long runs and the like with no problem.
caronae says
Oh crocuses, how I love thee. Too bad I live in the city and don’t have a yard 🙁
Happy spring!
Kaite@ Two Lives, One Lifestyle says
How lovely to see the flowers poking through!
Kati @ Living Well says
Wasn’t that “Office” the best one ever?!! I had a pb&j larabar today too- my 1st one of that flavor! It was pretty good, but not great? I wish it had a more grape jelly flavor than cherry :–)
Madeline @ Greens and Jeans says
Cotton kills! Get your feet into some wicking socks and your feet will be MUCH happier!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
those are the best bandaids.
amber's notebook says
YAY! I hope my tulips pop up soon!!
Deva (Voracious Vorilee) says
Grilled vegetables are so good – I can’t wait until we can start grilling again. I miss my grilled zucchini!
Mary (Food & Fun) says
i had blister issues and i bought those blister bandaids too…ALWAYS SLIPPED OFF! So then I bought the super adhesive regular old bandaid….I think it was even CVS brand. Those stuck to my foot like nothing else. I would highly recommend buying just regular old super sticky bandaids.
christina cadden says
Those band aids never work for me either.
Emily says
First time commenter. Long time follower.
I am so glad someone asked you what kind of sports bra you wear. (I had the EXACT same question) I have had some major problems finding a good one. I will have to check out gap.
I love your blog Kath. Your oatmeal has pretty much revolutionized my mornings.
cheers!
Kath says
It’s a hook in the back type. It doesn’t budge…if you know what I mean! Very supportive.

Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
Oh you lucky woman, getting all that gorgoeous weather! I’m so jealous – it’s cold and dreary still where I am 🙁 good on you for making the most of it 🙂
Amy says
Those blister band-aids are pretty good if you tape them on. I got a bad blister on the side of my foot from a pair of dress shoes, and I have been protecting it by putting a band-aid on the blister and then wrapping my foot in lots of paper medical tape (I’ve used other tapes too, but I think I like the paper tape best — and it’s cheapest. I wrap my foot in tape or at least wrap the tape half around so that the band-aid/tape does not move around.
When you get the right amount of tape on, it works wonders! I put paper tape on my feet before runs all of the time to prevent blisters. Any spots that seem susceptible to blisters or past blister sites, I wrap up!
Moleskin is also great — but I think you need to err on the side of using too much of it in order to prevent it from moving around.
Hannah says
So many wonderful colours on your plate – you do know how to make food look incredibly appealing! 🙂
Anne says
I’m so jealous of your BBQ! I wish we could do the same, but we have soooo much snow on our backyard that it’s hard to open the door, so BBQ is out of the question 😀
Kath says
Thanks for the blister advice!
christie @ honoring health says
Oh man, so jealous of the grilling out. I have been thinking about it for days now and hope to get something on the grill this weekend!
Chelsea (Chelsea's Chew and Run Fun) says
Hooray for the flowers poking out of the ground! Also, hooray for that fabulous array of grilled veggies you had for dinner. The asparagus in particular looks divine. Can’t wait to see what you do with the leftovers!
Nora@LiveLifeEatRight says
I love seeing flowers pop up for the first time! Spring is almost here 🙂 This also means, PERFECT running weather is almost here too!!! Looks like such a nice day!

Jen says
I have yellow flowers in my yard! I’m so excited spring is finally getting here.
Jessie says
No flowers here, but mountains are nice, too 🙂 Veggies are a great way to celebrate the start of Spring.
Stacey says
Ohhh I know! I’m LOVING this weather! yesterday while I was coaching, the girls and I were outside on the track and I was wearing pants and I was cursing myself because it was totally short-weather!!! S’posed to be nice today too 😀
Good job on your fast run!
Kacie says
Kathy I love your blog!! I also tired my first Pb&J Lara bar yesterday… mmmm! Still not my favorite lara bar either, but yummy to say the least!
Katie says
I see everyone has questions about your wardrobe on this post! What kind of shirt did you wear for your run? I love it, but I can’t quite make out the logo!
Kath says
Old Navy!! I LOVE them!
Heather says
yay for the run! I love spring weather, I am getting so excited about it!
Jil says
MM those roasted veggies look amazing!
Michelle @ G(Y)G says
I feel like I have so much to say about this post!
1.) those purple flowers are gorgeous and such a nice reminder that spring IS coming 🙂
2.) fabulous green running top! what a great color, and I love that it has thumb holes
3.) pb &j larabar = favorite flavor. so good.
4.) the grilled veggies/tofu and your dinner plate are making my mouth water.
Kristilyn (My 29th Year) says
Good job on the run! I think it must be the material of the bandaids because the reusable moleskin I bought looks the same – and it doesn’t stick at all! Well, it does in the beginning but, like you said, if you plan to get any mileage in, it’s not going to stay put! Hopefully you can find something better.
I love those little muffins! Can you think of any substitutes for some of the hard-to-find ingredients? I’m thinking of the kombu, mirin, and arrowroot … any suggestions?
K
Kath says
Omit all three!!
Carolyn says
I finally tried the PB & J Larabar and thought it was horrible. Super tart and bitter! 🙁 Maybe it’s b/c I got it at TJ Maxx on clearance. LOL It wasn’t expired, though.
Kelly says
I agree about the PB&J. My favorite is a toss up between the Coconut Cashew and the Gingersnap. Yum. 🙂
Tara @ Geek Baker says
I’m loving your running shirt with the thumb holes. Looks perfect for Spring and Fall when I don’t want to wear gloves. 🙂 What brand is it?
Kath says
Old Navy7
Tara @ Geek Baker says
Oh, and I had dog-eared the page for that Apple Walnut Lentil Loaf in my Clean Foods book ages ago. After you made them I decided it was time to do the same! So. Good. 🙂 Though I made the Tofu Stuffed Shells from that book as well this weekend and was nearly as impressed, so don’t rush to try that one….
Kim says
Cotton is rotten! Moisture wicking socks are the way to go.
Alex says
I would make sure that you followed the directions for putting the band-aid on closely before you return them – mine always stay, but you have to make sure to put them on correctly.
Also – cotton socks?! Really?!? No wonder you got a blister. Switch to moisture-wicking socks!
Marianne says
I’ve never had luck with band-aids not slipping either. When breaking in new skates, I would always get blisters/wounds on my ankles, but it didn’t matter what I chose to put on them to protect them, they would slide off anyways. I eventually gave up and suffered through it – sometimes, that’s easier than trying to pad it.
