First time eating an Arnold Sandwich Thin!
If you haven’t heard, Arnold // Oroweat Bread is sponsoring the 2010 Healthy Living Summit! We are ever thankful for our sponsors and thrilled to have them on board 🙂 As a result, I was sent a few coupons to try out their sandwich thins, among others.
Upon first smell, I liked it. Y’all know I am a complete bread snob because of my Great Harvest future, so I’m a tough cookie to please. We shall see what my palate thinks of this guy. I have to say, as a nutrition expert-to-be, I was less than impressed with the ingredient list…
A schmear of Nat Nutty Cinnamon Honey with some IKEA Lingonberry Preserves.
On the side, Voksos (organic plain) – also part of a review package – and some flax + coconut in a little jar! With my orange Crate + Barrel spoon to play.
Every good lunchbox needs veggies, even if they are plain and chopped for lack of time…
I also packed a juicy organic pear, but I imagine myself (this is me talking at 9:38PM the night before…) eating this for a snack instead.
Thuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrssssssssssssday!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
mmmmmmmmmm veggies 🙂 such a colorful lunch! i like sandwich thins because i don’t get bogged down with bread-tummy after eating them, but the fresh, real stuff is the best!
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
Those Thins are so…thin! I can’t wait to try one at the HLS – they don’t have them in England 🙂
Have a great afternoon!
Camille says
I like the sandwich thins, but they definitely don’t fill you up!
In August I am moving right down the street from a Great Harvest! I am about to become a bread snob too 🙂
Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] says
I don’t think I’ve ever eaten zucchini raw – I’m for it though! For some reason the coconut + flax has got me drooling – mmm!
Jessica @ How Sweet says
I love sandwich thins! SO good. 🙂
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday says
I’m a bread snob too. I make my own bread and can totally tell the flavours and textures of a good bread.
Robyn @ Frugal 'n' Fit! says
I have always wanted to try Arnold sandwich thins (Don’t have them in Canada, or at least none that I can find!) but I’m disappointed to hear about their nutritional content. Bummer.
I love raw zucchini. It has basically no flavour, but it’s still delicious for some reason!
Rosalie says
Robyn@Frugal n Fit: President’s Choice (Loblaws, Superstore, Independent Grocer) makes something really similar, their multigrain thin buns (also in white whole wheat): http://www.presidentschoice.ca/LCLOnline/products.jsp?type=details&catIds=cat40002&catIds=102&productId=20194 They also have them in hotdog format. Hope that helps!
shannon (the daily balance) says
i’m a big fan of sandwich thins! despite the ingredient list ;(
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
I used to love Arnold’s sandwich thins but over time they have kind of become less appealing to me.. not sure why. Something about the taste? I’d rather just have real bread.
Ms Health says
It’s that nasty sucralose (splenda) in the Arnold’s Sandwich thins that leaves that after taste. Try Thomas Bagel thins with no artificial sweetener.
Jil @ Peace, Love & Munchies says
Can’t blame you – if I had access to a Great Harvest – let alone owning one – I could never look at bread the same again. Plus…I have never sunk my teeth into anything made by GH but just by the pictures I can tell it’s phenomenal bread.
Jo says
These are delicious! I eat them whenever I make a veggie burger. They taste good–as a opposed to much of the cardboard-tasting “whole” bread options out there.
Lisa says
I like the Sandwich Thins and Bagel Thins because they are low in calories. But when I eat some of Dave’s Killer Bread I’m reminded that bread can be REALLY good!
Lauren says
I have to agree on the Arnold’s Thins. I’ll pick them up at the store, then look over the ingredients list, and put them back. I’d rather have my Ezekiel Bread.
Coco @ Opera Girl Cooks says
I’ve been eyeing these sandwich thins at the grocery store for a while now, but like you said, the ingredient lists can be a big turn-off. Perhaps I will try making my own at home!
Erin says
I like the thins but the ingredient list isn’t awesome — I usually stick with Trader Joe’s whole wheat hamburger buns, which have only slightly more calories and a much better list of ingredients.
Lindsay @ Summit Sandwiches says
I used to like those Sandwich Thins, but I’ve since reverted back to regular bread. If I’m going to have a sandwich, I want the bread to add a little somethin-somethin to my sandwich. I want it to be glorious nutty and wheaty. I don’t want something that tastes uninspired and rather bland. I’ll take a few extra calories on my sammich if it means I can enjoy a superior taste and added heft. Why fear those extra calories? Seems silly if you ask me.
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
I really do like the sandwich thins, but I love Great Harvest bread even better. Their round shape and texture is perfect to put on egg puffs though.
Jess @ Jessica is Getting Fit says
Happy Thursday!
I really like the sandwich thins because I can stay within reasonable calorie ranges at cookouts and bbqs with them!
Becca says
Bleck! I am not a sandwich thin gal. If I’m going to eat a sandwich, I need the real stuff. The bread makes the sandwich for me.
Jillian says
I’m not even a bread snob since I don’t really love bread, I’ve always wondered why the thins are so popular amongest “healthy living” bloggers, for lack of a better term- don’t they contain Sucralose? Dudes, that’s *Splenda*! The one variety I’ve seen did, and the rest of their ingredient lists aren’t good at all- I tend to assume that a lot of people aren’t reading labels..
Sarah (OC2Seattle) says
Interested in the verdict on the sandwich thins. Isn’t it amazing how hard it is to find bread with basics like a good fiber count, no sugar etc.?
Caroline says
I think you need sugar to make bread because the yeast feed on it.
Cyclist Kate says
The yeast can feed on the starches in the flour, too, without adding sugar. Artisan breads are more often than not just flour, water, yeast, and salt! *friendly bread baker service announcement*
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
I like them as burger buns. I was never a bun girl so they are just enough so I can add my toppings to my burgers.
Stacy (StacyGrowsHealthy) says
The sandiwch thins aren’t my favorite, but it is nice to be able to have a sandwich for only 100 calories or so of bread.
Courtney @ Sweet Tooth, Sweet Life says
I really like the sandwich thins, I eat them quite often!
Did you know they also make them now in the shape for a hot dog/sausage? They’re called Sandwich “Flats”! Just saw ’em the other day at the store.
theemptynutjar says
i wish we had the fage and voskos in canada..or maybe it is, but just not in my parts 🙁 too bad. i think i eat too much yogurt actually, its crazy 🙂
“nutrition-expert-to-be” is a controversial thing….we can never be experts in anything 🙂 (but i know what u r saying!)
Lilliah says
Uhh…yes, a lot of people are experts in every field you can think of- what are you talking about?!
Rose-Anne says
I think there are at least two ideas that pop into people’s heads when we think “expert”:
1) A person formally trained in a discipline (i.e., completing a rigorous RD program).
2) A person who knows absolutely everything that there is to know about something.
Kath is about a hair away from #1, so I think her claim is legitimate 🙂 And no one can claim #2 because it’s an imagined state of knowledge. We’re always discovering new things, like the idea of “healthy fats” or the micronutrients in vegetables.
Personally I feel like the more we know, the more we realize how much we DON’T know. It’s humbling!
Katherine says
I think I say this on every post (why stop now)
I love what you’re eating out of/with!
cute spoon and jar
Rachel says
Oh man Sandwich Thins are the bomb, diggity. For sure!!
Mikala says
Hi Kath! Unfortunately we don’t have a Great Harvest here in SoCal by me. Any good recommendations for a different bread company that meats your ingredient/nutrition standards?
Kath says
I would look for something at your local health food store or farmer’s market that was made from scratch. Most national brands are going to have more preservatives and all. I liked a lot of Trader Joe’s breads and Ezekiel.
Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
I love those sandwich thins. My only complaint is that most of them have splenda in them and they’re a little high in sodium. But everything in moderation, I’m not a purist by any means. For just 100 calories, it’s hard to argue with full sized sandwich material.
Jenn
Paige (Running Around Normal) says
I love Arnold’s thins! They make great sandwich slices or buns!
Lori says
I love the Arnold thins. If I had a Great Harvet I’m sure that would be much better:) Hope to check yours out when you come to Charlottesville – i’m about 90 mins or so from there. It’s just the closest bakery is way out of my way:(
kim says
This is related to the last post. We were in the same boat house under deposit etc but you are in THE BEST position just think of it that way. It will all work out and you will look back and say wow…how did that all come together!! hang in there!
Jess says
I wouldn’t mind hearing exactly which ingredients you dislike and why. I buy Orowheat sometimes.
Kath says
Water = bland.
Polydextrose = starchy sugar
Soybean oil = nothing wrong with it in general, but it’s in EVERYTHING so I boycott it.
Sucralose – I don’t use artificial sweeteners
Soy lecithin = same as the soybean oil. Not necessarily “bad” but why is it in bread!
Monoglycerides = fats. I’d rather just see a little oil, or none at all.
Jess says
Thanks for answering!
Caroline says
Hmm, I know you are eating the Sandwich THins b/c Arnold sent them. However, I have to say to Arnold (not dissing you) that I don’t like the concept of sandwich or bagel “thins.” I want real bread and real bagels!
Mastering Public Health says
Those thinly-sliced breads always look cute but they sneakily contain artificial sweeteners (Sucralose) that I believe cause harm so I will not purchase them. Also prefer organic due to all the pesticides on conventionally-grown wheat!
Ashley@thehungryscholar says
I love that tabletop!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
I think maybe the sandwich thins might make a better snack, but I can’t imagine it filling me up…they’re so very tiny! But maybe with a few extra snacks and veggies like you have, it will be filling. I haven’t tried them yet either, so I’m interested in hearing what you have to say about them! 😀
Amber K says
Do any arnold/orowheat products not have a bunch of junk in them? I tend to stay away from most breads because of that.
Annie @ stronghealthyfit says
I haven’t tried those sandwich thins yet, and I don’t really plan on it. I consider them in the category of ‘diet’ foods, aka NOT real foods and ones that are part of the brainwashing of women to keep us in the pursuit of thinness. I care about the quality of my bread, that’s one thing I spend more $$ on at the grocery store. I don’t need a replacement, esp. one with excess inredients! Sorry for the rant 🙂
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i try to avoid the thins if i can – but i do appreciate them somedays when i’m feeling a sandwich but don’t want a SANDWICH
KatieH says
I love the EarthGrains Thins! Unlike the other brands, they have a great ingredient list.
EarthGrains ingredients: Whole wheat flour, water, sugar, wheat gluten, oat fiber, yeast, soybean oil, cultured wheat flour, salt, distilled vinegar, guar gum, enzymes, enzyme-modified soy lecithin, Raisin juice concentrate, Wheat bran, Milk, Soy flour, Sesame seeds.
LC @ Let Them Eat Lentils says
Those things taste SO freakin good. My friends and I got them this year at the beach and everyone could not stop RAVING about them.
Kristina says
I am not at all a fan of the Arnold Thins – there isn’t enough THERE there!
I’d definitely rather have some nice, chewy, thick bread for a sandwich.
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
I actually love the sandwich thins! Especially for an egg sandwich in the morning! Delicious 🙂
lauri Watson says
Hiya- I love sandwich thins for burgers- But not for sandwiches! I’ve recently switched to the EarthGrains sandwich thins- Have you tried those yet?
Lisa @bakebikeblog says
I have seen these around the blog world but I don’t think they are available in Australia 🙁
runnerforever says
I went through a sandwich thin phase, but they never quite satisfied me like a real sandwich. Hope you get some good rest, you take on so much!
Shu says
Hey! I just discovered your blog … Really really like it! I think it’s wonderful, keep up the healthy lifestyle. You’ve become my new role model 🙂
Kath says
Welcome!
Simply Life says
I haven’t tried the thins yet either…
PhysiqueSpeak says
Oh, I love these little buns heated with some pb and j!
Shannon says
I like the sandwich thins. I don’t actually care for bread all that much; I’d rather have the filling. The thins are a nice conveyor of fillings!
Deva (Voracious Vorilee) says
I like the sandwich thins for egg sandwiches, and in place of regular burger buns, but I prefer Nature’s Made bread overall.
Nicole, RD says
I am a huge fan of the Arnold’s Thins!
Alycia @ Fit n Fresh says
Those veggies look delish!! And I’m hardly ever hankering for raw veg! Weird?
Hannah says
Hmm, we don’t have these in Australia… guess I could just attack a normal roll with a meat mallet, but that probably wouldn’t suit the calorie-focused peeps out here! 😀
Kristin says
Sadly, there isn’t a Great Harvest anywhere in site near me. Do you have a suggestion for breads that are in the regular grocery stores??
Kath says
See my response to Mikala above!
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
I have never hard those sandwich thins, but I know they are all the rage. I don’t think the ingredients are that great and that it’s a lot of hype but not as good as Great Harvest.
jessica says
The sandwich thins are much better used with burgers!
Kath says
SANDWICH THINS: Despite not loving the ingredients, I thought it tasted OK! I especially liked it as PB&J because while I love me some hearty, doughy bread, I really enjoyed tasting the PB&J first and foremost and the bread (thin) in the background. I do see how these guys are pretty versatile too. But again, they’re not really that close to real food.
M. Carter @ the Movies says
I bought a small stockpile of lingonberry preserves from my last trip to Ikea. If those Swedes could just invent some lingonberry vodka, I’d be all set. 🙂
Adriana says
I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this, but Trader Joe’s has come out with their own line of Multi-Grain thins that has a better ingredient list. I tried them recently and I am replacing my Arnold’s Sandwich thins with the TJ’s ones. Might be something to look into!
Hercynia says
Yeah, it’s good, very useful, thanks 🙂
Kel says
Sandwich thins make me sad. One word – sucralose.
