The above title would be a total understatement of last night’s wild winds. We had CRAZY wind last night. I imagined the Wicked Witch of the West flying by our window.
I was up until 3AM not able to sleep.
But I really blame the 1.5 cups of Starbucks extra strongly brewed coffee yesterday. I knew it was too much caffeine when I drank it. I am really sensitive to caffeine and normally if I have a second cup, I can tell a difference in my sleep quality. I knew last night at 11PM when I was still wide awake that it was going to be a rough night. The storm only added to my racing heart.
2AM Twitter Feed
First I had to get ear plugs. Then I was hot. Then I realized I was also starving. So I went down for a snack, hoping the milk + cereal would kick in those sleepy hormones like in the movies.
Quaker Squares never tasted so good!
I finally fell asleep around 3AM. And was up again around 9.
When I got up, the gray day was on its way out
To break into a little sunshine!
I see bits of damage – mostly that this gutter is now lose
I am almost always the first one out of bed making breakfast. But today Matt was and I got to pad down when it was just being plated bowled.
The Mix
- 1/3 cup oats, milk, water
- 1/2 banana
- 1 tbsp flax
- Pinch salt
- Jam According To Daniel (the best EVER!)
- Ambrosial Granola
- Maranatha PB
Weaker coffee today – Whole Foods blend!
I don’t feel that tired, but more like I have the flu in my body and lungs. I will probably take a 20 minute power nap and hopefully that will reset my body. Think I need to back off on the coffee soon!
Camille says
Haha, I love your Twitter feed 🙂
Try to call it an early night and I’m sure you will be okay! Did you catch Glee last night? It was a really good episode!
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
I feel that same way when I don’t get enough sleep. It’s the worst.
Stacy @ Every Little Thing says
haha I followed your Twitter feed for a bit before I had to get to bed. We had crazy winds about a month ago and I was scared our back fence would fall down (it’s def on it’s way!) but it survived. We had quite the messy yard to clean up afterwards, though! Hopefully the gutter is all you’ll have to worry about.
Samantha @ Bikini Birthday says
Oh man, getting a bad sleep is the worst.
I can drink espresso before bed, but regular coffee keeps me wired.
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I definitely notice a difference in my energy and sleep when I drink multiple coffees or have them after about 3pm. I’m a girl who needs sleep, so staying up till 12 or 1 is not good for me since I have to be up at 5! That was very nice of Matt to do the brekkie making this morning – that will be a criteria for my future husband lol! Have a great morning Kath! 🙂
Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey says
I couldn’t sleep last night either!! I went to bed around 11:15pm, and saw 1:10, 2:20 and 3:30 on the clock… freaky! I had to get up for good at 6am, and that was sleeping in for a workday! 🙁 We had some crazy wind last night as well, with bangs and bumps and clangs. Eeeks.
~
Gabriella @ Embracement says
I’m terrified of wind ever since going through a hurricane/isolated tornado at my summer house when I was 5, so I feel your pain, I’m always up all night in bad storms!
Amanda (Eating Up) says
I hate when I have trouble falling asleep! And scary noises are the worst in the night. The only thing I like to hear when I’m sleeping is nothing or the pitter-patter of rainfall.
Joy says
Sorry to hear about the not-so-good night of sleep 🙁 Maybe you’ll go to bed a bit earlier tonight because of it 🙂 I’m up near DC and it is very gray and rainy outside but I love it! Makes me want to brew some tea 🙂 Hey, I know you’re not a huge tea lover but have you ever had Capital Teas? I assume it’s a DC thing but not sure if you can find it other places. Anyways, I didn’t know about it until recently and I went to their shop and picked up: Roasted Almond, Butter Truffles, and Figgy Pudding and they are all seriously to die for. Unlike any tea I have ever had before!
Kath says
I haven’t heard of those – but they sound amazing!
krissy says
Ah! Same experience last night! I thought it was the wind too until I realized I think it was because I tasted my new blog post (coming tonight)…unfortunately I do have to head to an office today. Blogging is so much more fun. So. Tired.
Julie @ Honey B. Nutrition says
It is AMAZING how much more caffeine there is in Starbucks vs other coffee. I guess that’s how they get you hooked!
Natalia - a side of simple says
Sorry about your bad night 🙁 Your first couple of pictures remind me of the twilight zone! I had a quick question since I know you usually sleep with an eye mask to block out the light. Do you sleep on your side? I usually do. I would like to get the eye mask you have, but I’m worried you can only use one if you sleep on your back… Your thoughts would be much appreciated, Kath!
Kath says
I sleep on all sides 🙂
The Blinky masks that I have don’t shift around because of their Velcro backs. Cheaper masks do.
Alaina says
I love going to Whole Foods and grinding my own coffee beans. My favorite is the Pleasant Morning Buzz in the french press. 🙂
Kath says
We have that one – but the “Whole Foods Blend” is my fav.
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
We had crazy winds, too! Still do. They’re calming down now. Funny that wind + rain makes me sleep, doesn’t keep me up! 🙂
Rachel R says
I totally feel you! We had wind and rain here in Richmond last night. I had a cup of coffee around 4 and just did not get a good sleep. Too bad I had class at 9 🙁
hope you sleep better tonight!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
i don’t know if i could sleep with earplugs, but if it helps you rest i say go for it! hope you get some more rest!
Kjirsten- Balanced Healthy Life says
I am really sensitive to coffee as well. If I have more than one cup a day I can’t sleep at night. I also have to drink it in the very early am for it not make me stay up all night! I hope you make it through your day and you cat nap helps!
Jess says
It wasn’t just you! Mike and I were both up till 2 AM due to the weather…unfortunately for me that 5:45 wakeup call came VERY soon! yuck. Hope you get some time to rest as I work straight until 10pm, take a nap for me!!! 🙂
Kate @ Walking in the Rain says
Uff, you had one rough night. I never can sleep very well when it is windy–too many unique noises my imagination can turn into scary things.
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
Lol…looks like your caffeine was still going strong when you were tweeting! 🙂
I hope you feel better after your power nap!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I hate not being able to sleep. But yeah, working from home is a huge bonus on these days! I hope you get some rest today!
Felicia (a taste of health with balance) says
Rest is key! Also that crazy storm is now here in NY and fingers crossed my power doesn’t go out. Feel better!
lindsay says
Sad thing is that I was reading your Tweets real time 🙁 there were two guys fighting in my apt building lobby (and I live on the 1st floor) so my dog was barking, and I was a little scared and couldn’t sleep either…
Lauren says
I hate sleepless nights. It throws my entire day off and I ALWAYS wake up starving. Cereal is the best midnight snack right?
Oh I hope you are not coming down with something. Get some rest Kath!
Amy says
Ooh that wind kept me up all night too! It was awful. The circles under my eyes today look like bruises. 🙁
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
We ran out of decaf coffee a few days ago so it was full caf for me….umm hence our late night tweeting :). People find it funny when I order half caf or decaf after 2pm but if I have caffeine at night, I’ll never ever fall asleep.
My dad can drink strong brewed coffee at 10 pm and still fall asleep at midnight. Crazy.
Christine (The Raw Project) says
I’m too sensitive to caffeine too, if I had coffee in the afternoon then I’m not sleeping well. It happened after I kicked sipping on soda throughout the day and I pretty much have to avoid anything with caffeine after noon.
Crazy storm, reminds me of hurricanes when we lived in Florida which I don’t miss. 🙂 But breakfast looks wonderful.
grocery goddess jen says
I didn’t sleep well either last night! We did have lots of rain and wind, but that didn’t contribute to my lack of sleep. Good luck with getting in a power nap later 🙂
Christin@purplebirdblog says
We have had some bonkers winds here too in Austin! The other day our deck chairs were strewn across the yard!
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
Nothing worse than a bad’s night sleep. Something about being sleep deprived makes me feel hungover!
Caitlyn (A Spoonful of Life) says
On the rare occassion that I drink coffee, I get very jittery and impatient! I actually walked out of an appointment because I was so tired of waiting for on the chiropractor. I blamed my impatience on the Starbucks coffee I had before going into appointment!!
Lee @ College Foodie Finds says
Ugh, insomnia. It always gets yah 2 days later! Music or television always seems to help me, I think it’s because I can’t fall asleep when it is completely silent!
Sophie says
I know how you feel! That was me the night before last when the storms were rolling through Mississippi. The wind and rain was so hard and tornado sirens were going off every 10 minutes (plus, we live 4 streets away from where the siren is, so it’s REALLY loud). So glad it’s over!
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
My parents’ house is 150 years old and the huge old window frames just go NUTS when it’s windy- you can literally see them rattling!! Sorry to hear about your rough night. I hope this evening is quieter and less caffeinated!
Haleigh says
Sorry to hear you couldn’t fall asleep last night! I am not sensitive to caffeine but I usually try to drink my last coffee by noon.
Alexa @ The Girl In Chucks says
That’s a bummer you couldn’t sleep. Hopefully you’ll have a better night tonight!
That’s crazy that you are affected by caffeine that seriously. I can drink coffee even in the evening and have a perfectly normal night’s sleep. I guess my body is just used to it?
That’s probably bad, right? Oops.
Heather says
WOuld you consider your new ambrosia granola one of your favories?? Wonering if I should order
Kath says
It’s definitely up there because of the chew! I think it’s like nut butters – they are all so different it’s hard to pick a very favorite. Sometimes you want crunch, other times chew, sometimes airy, sometimes clumpy, sometimes no clumps. But yes, I think it’s really good. And I LOVE the muesli!
Sarah @ See Sarah Graduate says
Yikes! We had that wind earlier yesterday here in Southwest Virginia! It was crazy! And of course today we are getting snow!
Jil @ Big City, Lil Kitchen says
I heard about the crazy winds and tornadoes down South! Glad the gutter was really the only damage!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
We had crazy storms too. Except I was in another city trying to fly home! This morning was totally a comfort-food-oatmeal one for me as well!
As far as caffeine, I try to not have any after noon – I’m really sensitive to it unless I’m just totally exhausted.
Kelly says
I always get hungry after being awake after 30 minutes, no matter what time it is. Glad there was no destruction at your house. We had flooding here last night.
Holly says
I can’t drink coffee (caffinated) after 3pm or I cannot sleep either 🙁
Amy at TheSceneFromMe says
We had fierce winds last night here too. It was like “I’ll huff and puff and blow your house down!”
Caffeine and I don’t get along good either. I had a Coke Zero with dinner one night and paid for it all night long with the insomnia! Bummer, hopefully the nap will perk you up!
Melissa @ I Never Imagined says
Oh dear! The nights when you can’t sleep are the worst! I laughed when I was scrolling through Twitter this morning and saw all of your tweets from last night! Still, the amount of sleep you got was my normal amount of sleep during the week, so it’s not too bad. I hope you have a good sleep tonight!!
Vanessa says
Oh my goodness!! Are you sure C’Ville isn’t the “Windy City”. That wind was and still is crazy!! The door to the house where I was staying blew open last night, it scared me half to death!!! I’m sure I’ll be blowing my way back to Charlotte today!
Maryea @ Happy Healthy Mama says
Starbucks coffee is so strong! I feel jittery when I drink it.
Katy (The Singing Runner) says
Your twitter feed made me laugh! I hate those nights where I can’t sleep! We all have them!
Rachel says
Ugh, we had that crazy wind in Raleigh last night too! It wasn’t so bad, it did wake me up a couple of times but I was exhausted. I will say that when my alarm went off this morning I laid there and listened for a minute, and I heard the most horrible sound and thought it was my balconey being ripped off the house. Thankfully it wasn’t, I have no idea what the noise was..
I was wishing I didn’t have to report to an office, but unfortunately I do 🙁
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Ugh, I had a night like that Monday night and it’s the WORST!!
Lu says
Rough nights are the worst. I hope tonight is better.
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
I hate nights like that! They are definitely the WORST!
Ash says
Ugh I hate nights like that! I always never want to wake up come morning.
Clare @ Fitting It All In says
I’m really caffeine sensitive too – I try not to have any after my morning mug. Strangely, my mom drinks diet coke and regular coffee until she heads up to bed. Don’t know how!
LaToya S. says
I found your blog a few days ago, and I must try this “soaking oats overnight in milk and adding all kinds of yummy goodness to it the next morning” trick! I see you do it quite often and it sounds so good.
Kath says
It is!! Welcome!
Paige(Running Around Normal) says
Not being able to sleep is the worst! I couldn’t either. Made me skip my morning spin sesh this morning – oops! Sleep sometimes > workouts 🙂
Kiran says
The weather reminds me of the hurricane season look. Gloomy and dark. Hope you would recover soon from caffeine.
Hannah says
Thank heavens for technology during insomnia! It definitely makes the nights easier 🙂
Sana says
LOL! I tweeted you at 1 am. Heheheeh!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Nights like that are the worst! But at least it usually means that you get a killer sleep the next night. 😉
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Cereal’s the best midnight snack. That cold milk feels better than ever!
Stephanie says
ugh we got that same storm after ya’ll and I was up all morning too! the winds were so strong they sounded like they were going to break our house in half, plus the lightening/thunder, so scary 🙁 definitely feeling a bit sleep deprived today!
