It was a late morning around here. I was so tired from my travels. But I had a new breakfast concept to try, so I got up quickly.
At the Highland Brewery and then again at Sam Adams we got to nibble on some malted barley. It was delicious! Matt said he would get me some the next time he went to his brew shop.
Here is his description of what it really is:
It’s malted/germinated/sprouted barley – the grain has been soaked in water and tricked into thinking it’s time to grow a new plant. This activates enzymes in the grain that begin to break starches into simple sugars. But before it gets too far along in the sprouting process, the maltster roasts the malt. This dries it to crispness, and in some cases develops more sugars. This particular malt is called Brumalt but is also known as Honey Malt because of its faint honey-like flavor. It’s a very strong flavored malt compared to what’s available out there and even in small amounts will add considerable sweetness and color to your beer. Or in the case of oatmeal, it’s just plain delicious! Most barley malt tastes something like Grape Nuts, and according to the Sam Adams tour guide, malted barley is one of the principle ingredients of Grape Nuts. If you want to buy some, you can get it at homebrew shops.
Beer nerd!
So this morning’s oatmeal combo was traditional whipped banana oats (1/3 cup portion) with salt, vanilla and flax stirred in.
Toppings included a sprinkle of granola, barley and almonds. Plus a spoonful of Naturally Nutty Chocolate Toffee PB.
On the side I had some Blog Reader Coffee. Andrea’s Charlottesville coffee in Mara’s Chicago cup!
I did my best to temper the soy milk but it didn’t work perfectly 🙁

Hey Kath! I use soy milk in my coffee all the time and never have a problem with it. i heat in the microwave (along with some agave nectar) for about 30 seconds before pouring in the coffee. it works beautifully and always turns out frothy! 🙂
how are you tempering yours?
Amy says
Wow! That’s an awesome to-do list. Can’t wait to see what all you get done!
MarathonVal says
I love the story of the triathlete!
When I ran my first marathon in 2007, that particular marathon (Chicago) had over 80 people, who were IN THEIR 80s, running the marathon that day!!!
Isn’t that so inspiring?!??!
Kath says
re. Barley,
I put it on top – uncooked – and yes it’s crunchy because it’s toasted.
melanie ,
I pour some soy milk in a mug, heat it for 30 seconds, pour in a little coffee. Stir and wait. Pour in some more. Stir and wait. Pour in the rest. Curdle.
I’ve heard it’s only the Costco soy milk that has a tendency for this?
Kath
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
interesting – how did the oatmeal taste? i find the Trader Joe’s soy milk doesn’t get crazy in the coffee
Stacey says
Uck. I have to pay my tuition today too!! 🙁 I’m so excited to go back to school though <–boyfriend thinks Im a geek, I really miss my teachers!!
Oh and there is an 84 year old man that runs in Dilworth, I’ve talked with about once or twice..I see him out there everyday on my way to work just working up a sweat..I think he is amazing!!
melanie says
I use either Soy Dream or Silk brand soy milk and have never had a problem. I’m sorry to hear the Costco brand is giving you such a problem.
Ashley says
Kath – Just curious what kind of oats you use. Quaker? Do you get quick cook and do it in the microwave or rolled oats on the stove? I am an oat-fanatic [i guess that is obvious w/ota.bars hehe]
Kath says
Ashley,
You have not visited the Tribute To Oatmeal page on my nav. bar! It’s got all the details. Yes, I use Quaker Old Fashioned.
Kath
Ashley says
Kath- I think it was just one of those days. I have totally looked at the tribute to oatmeal page b/c I LOVE oatmeal. However, I had a brain lapse and never thought to check back there to get the answers. The A/C was broken at work today and so it was 90deg….I’m blaming my flakiness on that 😉 I used to get my oats at Earthfare in the bulk bins..the organic rolled oats are about $1.50/lb. Now, I have to buy them in bulk 25lb amounts direct from a farm out West. Oookay..done w/my babbling =)
Jess says
Oh, I love the idea of using barley on oatmeal. I always enjoy nibbling the grains when I’m at beer tours too! Yum. (well, and I’m the girl who likes sweet feed for the horses too! haha)
