We have Great Harvest location meetings all day today, so it was another early run day.
[We’re still looking for a location. You’d think finding one would be as simple as renting an apartment. You find one you like, in a neighborhood you like, for a price you like. You make an offer to nearly match their asking price. You assume it will come clean and tidy and that the landlord will be nice and fix things that break and that’s that.
But it’s really more like this: the landlord tells you the price is actually not what was advertised. That the location doesn’t come with parking spots. That the bathroom plumbing is broken and you are expected to pay to fix it. That you have to start paying rent before you move in. That you must get your ex-boyfriend to sign the lease before he approves it. Yadda yadda.
These are all hypothetical, but it’s a taste of what we’ve been going through trying to find the right spot AND coming to an agreement on terms. If we could JUST get past the location hunt we’d be 3-4 months from having a bakery!]
Anyways, we went RUNNING this morning. I wake up so stiff and headachy sometimes (I have GOT to learn to sleep on my back!) and the thought of running seems torturous. But experience tells me that I’ll be feeling great as soon as I’m out in the morning air. And experience is always right.
I felt great right away, but my stomach did not. I had 3 bites of banana and a tsp of peanut butter before we left (I was starving when I woke up) and that seemed to give me sharp pains throughout the whole 4.5 miles. It was not an ideal run, but that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
Onto breakfast – Buddhalicious

Your comment about this morning “I wake up so stiff and headachy sometimes (I have GOT to learn to sleep on my back!) and the thought of running seems torturous. But experience tells me that I’ll be feeling great as soon as I’m out in the morning air. And experience is always right.” seriously got me out the door this morning. I was reading it on my iTouch while slowly debating whether or not I wanted to get out and go and after I read that line I switched over to music and got moving 🙂 Thanks!
Camille says
Cookies in oats? Yes please!
Good luck with your search!
Allison K says
Good Luck today! That sounds like quite the drainking experience!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Oh wow, the Vanilla Cookie Crumble cereal sounds so tasty, and healthy too! I’m going to check out the site to see if they ship to Canada because I MUST get me some of that. Good luck with the meetings. 🙂
Emily says
If you gain any wisdom on learning to sleep on your back, please share! I have been trying to teach myself to do that for years…and always end up back on my tummy…and stiff and achey in the morning!
Good luck with this part of the process!
Ilana says
My dad and I are working on opening a frozen yogurt shop and we’re meeting the same kind of stuff – of course we already have the location, now it’s the town giving us agida over things like parking and signage and air conditioning … But we will get there! And the KERF-Matt Great Harvest shall be the greatest GH ever!
Good luck today!!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
it’s interesting to hear bout the process of starting your own business. everything is harder than it seems, isn’t it? people always think that being an actor is so easy and wonderful (which it can be sometimes) but most of it is stuff like you’re going through – hustling!
Paige(Running Around Normal) says
What a nightmare! Hopefully things look up soon in terms of renting a space! Hope the meetings go well 🙂
Cathy B. @ Bright Bakes says
I talked about you this morning!!! 🙂 Your breakfast looks perfect…as usual! http://brightbakes.wordpress.com/2010/09/16/the-best-part-about-wakin-upthanks-mom/
Christina @ Food.Fun.Fabulous says
Good luck finding a location! I just found out there is a Great Harvest in a town nearby and plan on visiting this weekend 🙂
coco says
finding a place to open a business is really hard. my parents went through the process twice and both times took my father like 6 months! I would never be able to be so patient! So, good luck to you and Matt! Hope everything goes through fast and smoothly! 😉
Kelly says
Kath, I’m curious as to why sleeping on your back would make you less stiff. I cannot sleep on my back and have always always slept on my side. I remember learning in health class in grade school that sleeping on your side or on your back with a pillow under your calves was best for your back. Is that no longer correct?
Good luck with meetings! I hope you find a place lickety split!
Kath says
I sleep on my stomach with my arm under the pillow – can’t be good for my back muscles! Side is probably fine
Alyssa says
Good luck to you! Just imagine if this was how you had to find a husband! We would all be single 🙂
Heather says
Good luck on your space-hunt! Hopefully you will find the location today!
Lauren at KeepItSweet says

Caitlin (EatFeats) says

I can’t believe the morning you’ve been having. Moved meetings…site host problems. Just wanted you to know I feel frustrated for you! 🙂 Hope the day gets better.

$37.00 for a BOWL????? ON SALE??? WTF????
Kath says
Two bowls. Totally handmade.
Elise says
Good luck with the hunt! Hopefully something falls your way today!!! And remember, once you find the place that is the right place — everything will find a way to work itself out 🙂
Katie @ peacebeme says
I know the feeling of waking up in pain and with a headache because I have fibromyalgia. I also know what you mean that as soon as I can get up and exercise I feel so much better. 🙂
Jasmine @ Eat Move Write says
Sorry location shopping is such a hassle. You’re right I’d imagine it just like apt shopping, which I love. Soon enough, though, you’ll have a location and be on your way! 🙂

^exactly what I thought when I heard this post.
Jackie says
The landlord needs to get her ex-boyfriend to sign a lease? I really hope, for your sake, that this isn’t what is going on. That sounds like a total mess! No parking spots and a non-working bathroom? Who knew business location shopping would be such a hassle? Hope you guys have some luck and find a place you absolutely love ASAP!
Kath says
That’s not what’s going on – it was sarcastic examples.
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
Good luck with the meetings! It sounds like a long and complicated process that I don’t want to be part of ever!! 🙂
Sorry for the sharp pains in your stomach – you were probably still starving!!!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
i’m beyond tempted with the Kodiak cakes…
And your own Scottish oats is such a great idea! I had some from my stash yesterday and they were sooo good!
Sassy Molassy says
I bought my Buddha bowls a few months ago and LOVE Them. The snowpea and pacific colors are beautiful. They do seem expensive at first, but definitely worth it when you receive those awesome bowls!
Kath says
Glad you like them!
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
Good luck with the location hunt! It sounds stressful, but I’m sure it will all be worth it once you find the perfect place 🙂 Hope the meetings go well!
whitney says
good luck with the meetings.
I hate when I get that feeling in my stomach during a run. Sometimes food just does not work with you in the morning during a run.
I’m still experimenting. Glad you recovered well.
Carrie says
Oh gosh, and I thought apartment hunting was bad. I’m so indecisive, I can’t imagine how difficult it would be to choose a place for a bakery!
Jillian@ Reshape Your Life says
Good luck in all of your meetings today! I hope ya’ll find a location soon!!
Kelsey @ CleanTeenKelsey says
Ah, I never sleep on my back. It’s always on my side, haha. Yummy oats as usual. 🙂 Where do you buy your chia seeds and what brand?
Kath says
I buy them from myself at OpenSky: http://shopopensky.com/frontiernaturalproducts/product/chia-seeds-whole-1-lb-package
Kori says
Good luck!!
Lea @ Healthy Coconut says
I really love the colors of the buddha bowls, I’m getting some ideas for my wedding colors. It’s a nice contrast when the ocean is the background.
I’m sorry about the business troubles, I’m sure once you are passed this hurdle, you will be in bread and baking heaven soon.
I was just in Oakland this weekend and failed to check that there was a Great Harvest location there. I could have brought bread home.
ilana says
good luck good luck good luck!
Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) says
I am not a fan of apt hunting and feel your pain. Good luck finding a space for the store!
Marcia B Compton says
I love your posts, all of them with every picture recipe and little side note. I read way to many food blogs, and by far yours is my favorite. Do not change a thing, I would be very sad.
KatieTX says
My life has changed since I have started sleeping on my back. Get a cervical spine supporting pillow, so that it cradles you head on your back or on your side. Sleeping on my stomach caused such major neck problems for me. I never thought I could get over sleeping on my stomach, but it only took a few days!! Just get the right pillow. I got one from my chiropractor. Look into this, it really will change the way you feel waking up every morning!
^ If that comment, doesn’t sound like an infomercial, I don’t know what does.
Katie says
Good luck on the search. The ex-boyfriend cracked me up.
Stacey (The Habit of Healthy) says
Crikey, finding a location for your Great Harvest venture sounds such hard work. I hope you guys get it sorted out soon. 🙂
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
That sounds so frustrating! I hope you had better luck on your search today!
yummiee cupcake says
did you make that bowl? its so cute.
Natalia @asideofsimple says
After reading this post I can understand why your blog was down. It was probably just as frustrated with finding a place for the bakery as you should be with all the hassles that come with finding a location. Hoping things turn around quickly and soon for GH!
Tara says
Perhaps it was the hunger, but I’ll tell you that I have major stomach pains when I eat peanut butter before a run.
stacey-healthylife says
That sounds like the perfect crunchy topping for oats or even yogurt.
Simply Life says
Hope you find the perfect location soon!
Hannah says
Cookie crumble cereal? Heavens, you Americans are crazy sometimes 😉
