Morning!!
I slept in till 7 – which was great considering I was lights out at 10-something! I had plans for pancakes this morning, but neither Matt nor I had the energy to stand in front of the stove, so we had cereal bowls instead.
A mix of:
- Puffed quinoa
- Uncle Sam’s
- Ripe banana
- Honey peanuts
- Coconut
- Sunflower butter
- Ambrosial granola
- 2% milk
No coffee – that required too much energy too!
I spent an hour laying on the couch watching So You Think You Can Dance and am going to go out to do a little shopping in a bit, including WHOLE FOODS! Food predictions are hard these days because we’ve had so many spontaneous meals, so I’m mostly stocking up on salad ingredients and fruit. We’ve got plenty of yogurt from the WF closing sale, and lots of leftovers in the fridge and some meats in the freezer.
I also need work shorts!! Which stores have casual shorts good for roomy buttocks but small waists and NO CUFFS! I hate cuffed shorts! They always unravel on me.
Have a relaxing day!!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
Honey peanuts sound delish in oatmeal. i’m going to have to make some of those!
I like J Crew shorts – plenty of leg room and definitely sans cuffs (can’t stand them either!).
Krissy - Shiawase Life says
I second the J Crew….but the J Crew in Cville is … ugh … let’s just say I had a really bad experience yesterday.
Banana Republic has good shorts, and GAP too. I went to GAP yesterday and there were a lot of good sales.
Ashley says
I will third the J. Crew shorts! They are perfect for a ‘roomy’ booty and a tiny waist. I prefer the chino shorts that comes in 3 inch and 5 inch lengths in store (and 7 inch online). They come in many different colors too! The 3 inch ones sound crazy short but I’m 5’3” and they are a great length -booty isn’t hanging out but it’s not quite mid-thigh and is really spacey for the legs.
Mama J says
I fourth this. I rotate between a couple pairs of the 5 inch (I am 5′ 2″, petite w/ booty)… they look tiny when I fold them, but on they are soooo comfy and I get compliments on them all the time. They come in a great variety of colors, are cuffless, and last and last. I am VERY active all day, chasing a toddler, working from home, and running all over town, and my pairs from last summer still look totally respectable… so I think they are worth the investment.
Christine says
Good to know! I have the same “need.”
Laurel says
Just wanted to also throw in the J Crew has amazing customer service!
Baking 'n' Books says
I just wear regular sporty shorts….that’s of no help 😉
Tamara says
Breakfast looks GREAT, even here where it’s 10:18pm! Have a great Sunday!
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
Sometimes its nice to just have a quick and easy breakfast, even on the weekends. This looks delish!!
Lee says
I have a hard time with shorts because I have larger thighs, but I’ve had some luck at J. Crew. And i got a random pair at Target that fit really well.
Lee says
Also try New York & Company if you have one there.
Lisa @ Fit in the Midwest says
Gap used to carry shorts like you described. I haven’t been in there lately though. Some of mine that are just like what you want are from Gap outlet. Good luck!
Have a wonderful Sunday!
Nicole says
Ann Taylor (or Ann Taylor outlet) or Loft have great shorts for women with curves. They are the only ones that I can wear! If you order them online, just know that Loft runs a smaller than Ann Taylor.
Candace says
Seconding LOFT! I just got five pairs there — they’ve got various lengths and patterns in the classic chino, and the solids come in some really pretty colors. I chose mustard, dusty rose, sage, charcoal and basic khaki. Love ’em!
Candice says
I ‘third’ the ATL. I always find something there. Their clothes just seem to fit right!
Becky says
Agreed – I was there the other day and they have some great colors – and I bet they would fit you really well (they actually didn’t fit me super well, but I have the opposite body type, so they should be perfect for you!) – good luck!
Charise says
I agree on the LOFT if you still haven’t been shopping. I am an anti-shorts person bc I have such a hard time to fit nicely with my booty and thighs, but decided to try some this year and really liked theirs.
Erica says
I like Ann Taylor loft for shorts … I have a similar shape (a muscular pear, as I like to say !) and they work well for me!
KathEats says
A muscular pear – I like it!
Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food says
yey for a relaxing sunday! Hope you two get some much needed rest! 🙂
Jackie says
I’ve been on a American Eagle Bermuda Short kick lately. They’re roomy and there’s no risk of them being too short ( I have two kids and am constantly bending over, sitting of the floor, tangled like a pretzel ;)) and there is zero “riding up”. Good luck though!
Kaci says
I know exactly how you feel with the small waist and bigger back-end. My shorts and pants/jeans almost always have a gap in the back waistband but fit everywhere else. Super annoying since I don’t always want to wear a belt. I have found that the Old Navy perfect khaki collection of shorts are really comfortable and come in really nice colors. I get the 3.5″ inseam which might be too short for work, but I think they come in different inseams. Good luck!
Oh and your breakfast looks delish! Have a wonderful day off and make sure to relax! =)
Kaci says
http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=809740032&desktopSiteActive=true
I hope this link works because I’m on my iPhone. They have shorts with 7″ inseams, but I find they’re just a bit too long. These seem like a good option, especially since they aren’t outrageously expensive. I have shorts from Old Navy thay have lasted 3 years so $20 seem like a good investment. 🙂
Khushboo says
I had great plans of making whipped banana oatmeal for breakfast but went with a yogurt bowl as it was the easier option! Hit the spot equally though! Have a great day off!
Larbs says
Old Navy has some good bermudas, but the regular shorts are too short and tight. I think J crew has the best if you’re willing to pay the price…
KathEats says
I’ll take your word for it!
Liv @ The Salty n' Sweet says
I always have trouble finding a good pair of shorts, since my thighs are not in sync with the rest of my body 😉
Yes! I slept in until 9!!! Which hasn’t happened since I came back from abroad 🙂
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I found some good shorts at Ann Taylor Loft. They have a bunch of lengths available and I don’t believe they had cuffs. Good luck, the short hunt can be so frustrating!
The Teenage Taste says
Your cereal looks delicious. I love how you topped it with nut butter. How come I didn’t think of that?! Haha! Have a great day! 🙂
Sandy says
I hate shopping for shorts so when I find some that really fit I wear them for years! Sounds like you have some great suggestions though and somewhere to start looking.
amyt @ Chicken Nugget Momma says
That looks yummy!! Gap or old navy….I also like American Eagle.
Moira says
I think J.Crew shorts are a little straight up-and-down for us hourglass girls! I would try Loft’s petites section!
Marissa says
This summer I found 3 pairs of really great (& reasonable) shorts at Target…no cuffs, nice looking, could be dressed up or dressed down for work…I got khaki, black, and dark denim and I love ’em all!
alex says
I found some at New York & Co that are the shape you describe and have really cute prints. JCrew and Loft are also good.
Ally (Girl V Food) says
I always have problems buying pants. I have an Italian/yoga booty and wide hips but a very small waist and short legs, so everything is either too long, too tight in the legs, or too tight in the butt, or way too big in the waist! 🙁 J.Crew usually works for me, and anything with a bit of stretch.
I’m SO far behind on SYTYCD! I can’t believe they’re already on the top 20 performance round!
Miranda @ Working Mom Works Out says
I hope you find some time to relax today! I have no idea about the shorts. I’m just the opposite – no waist and no booty.
Molly says
i’m a muscular pear too (so stealing that) and love J crew’s 5 inch shorts.
Errign says
I really love J.Crew & Banana Republic jeans & shorts, though I’m not sure ’bout the booty issue because I don’t have one 🙂
Julia says
I also have a big booty and a tiny waist, and I find that Gap and Banana Republic are the only places where I can usually find shorts that fit. J Crew works as well but is usually a lot more expensive.
Kate Z. says
Old navy. Cheap and comfy! Just buy a big enough size, which may be bigger than your normal size. Nothing is more uncomfortable than tight shorts!
Laura Jane @ Recovering Chocoholic says
Looks like a delicious breakfast and sounds like you have a great day planned. It does feel so nice to sleep in and wake up without an alarm clock! Can’t help you with the shorts – I think I only own one pair (from Gap – curvy style, which is good for roomier buttocks and smaller waists as you say).
Laura says
J.Crew Factory outlet has free shipping until midnight tonight. All my shorts are from them! I have the same small waist/big butt issue….

The Healthy Hipster says
Gap Curvy jeans are great! They fit tight through the hip but go straight down after that. Super cute and flattering.
Love the looks of that cereal bowl! I opted for a very similar lazy sunday breakkinz!
Chelsea says
Do you have a Bass Outlet anywhere near? I just got 4 pairs of shorts there that I love. I also like Landsend for shorts (last season at least).
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
I buy my shorts at Target — Merona ones are pretty nice, and they fit me well (someone who also needs room for a muscular butt but smaller waist)!
Sabina says
All of my non-athletic shorts are from The Gap (check out their website first to get an idea of the styles they carry). I have a similar body type as you (petite, small waist, big bum, athletic legs). Good luck!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
Hope you have a nice day off! I’m big on old navy, target, and Kohl’s for my summer clothes!
Rachel says
I really like Ann Taylor Loft’s shorts. They recently had them on sale (maybe still do) for $25 each. They have many different styles, lengths, and colors.
Jen says
Psst… I am a fairly new reader and I love your blog! Anyway, I wanted to stop by and say I just saw your ad on weather.com!! 🙂
KathEats says
Thanks for stopping in!
Maria @ Beautiful Busy Bee says
I also have a “roomy buttocks”. My favorite shorts are from The Gap or Old Navy. I’m sorry that your local Whole Foods is closing! I live in Austin (WF’s headquarters) so we have a multilevel flagship store with more organic food than I can bear to imagine. It’s so much fun!!
KathEats says
No, it DID close. And a huge brand new one opened!
Anna says
I like Old Navy bermudas. I’ve worn them while biking around my neighborhood and haven’t experienced any rubbing either. 🙂
Maggie Wilson says
Check out Macy’s line called Style & Co. Great shorts for curvier bottoms. I think we have similar body shapes and these work great for me while not costing an arm and a leg. Love your blog and so happy that the bakery is off to a great start!!
lynn @ the actor's diet says
every year i wind up buying new shorts. GAP and H and M are reliables.
Fallon says
Try Old Navy, they have 5-in shorts with a mid-rise in khakis that would be perfect!
Katherina says
I love Old Navy bermudas and they’ve lasted me a long time!
Grace @ Healthy Dreaming says
Hope the rest of your Sunday is relaxing! That cereal looks amazing (I love the complexity of flavors!)
staceyhealthylife says
Old navy has a lot of lengths and fits. It’s worth checking out, especially for work since there a good price.
Jen says
Target! Mossimo shorts are great for work, and cheap.
Cait's Plate says
Ooh that’s a toughy – maybe try Old Navy? I think Gap is currently VERY into the cuff right now so I’d steer clear of that one. Good luck and enjoy your day!
Karen says
I am 5’3 w/ a booty and have most luck with J. Crew and Loft for chino type shorts.
Hope you have a relaxing Sunday, Kath!
Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] says
Old Navy 🙂
Kelsey says
i’ve got a butt and a smaller waist and i just found great shorts yesterday at ny & co and target! bonus: not expensive.
Hillary says
Sounds like you’re built just like me! I’ve had a lot of luck at Old Navy and Ann Taylor Loft in the past. I prefer ON because they have a range of lengths, so you have a better chance of finding something you like! Good luck and enjoy your day off : )
Molly @ RDexposed says
2%? You’re living on the edge! haha
Amelia says
My shorts from both Loft and Ann Taylor are awesome! I think they are having a sale right now too, which helps. Old navy shorts are also great, especially if you want affordable. 🙂
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
Love that cereal mix… definitely not missing out on oatmeal by having that mixture! 😉
Glad to hear you had a relaxing morning and have a fun time shopping today!
Kris says
I live in Old Navy shorts (year around wear since I’m in FL). If you register online for their email, you’ll always get codes and coupons for 15-30% off, plus they always have sales. Their shorts are durable, and come in many different lengths. I’m almost 5’4 (haha) and the I like the 5″ length. They have some with a drawstring waist (you can see them online) and ribbed waistband that are cute and comfy and have been on sale in the store. I also like the basic Merona khaki shorts at Target. J. Crew I find to be too expensive and too short (unless you’re a teenager).
Marie says
This is not directly shorts-related, but I recently found an online shopping site that has lots of great deals, so thought I’d pass it on to you and fellow readers. It’s “beyond the rack dot com” – ships both to Canada and US. I’m planning on putting in my first order soon- any one have any experience with them??
katie @KatieDid says
My vote for quality shorts is the Gap. They are usually long enough to be proper for work and super comfortable. Enjoy your day off!!!!
katie says
i have been loving my lands end shorts lately!
sweetkaroline says
I am in the Jcrew boat along with a bunch of other people as well I see!
I have big thighs and a butt, but a small waist and I’ve been wearing Jcrew’s shorts for years. Go for the 5″, the 3″ is okay, but a smidge too short if you’re sitting down if you know what I mean (man I wish they made a 4″). Plus they come in a lot of fun colors along with the basics.
Don’t buy shorts from JCrew’s outlet or Factory online. The material and cut is sub par and not worth the $10 difference and won’t last as long. The shorts that I have from Jcrew have lasted several years and have held up very well, they are the only shorts I wear.
wow I sound like a Jcrew commercial…think they’ll send me a coupon!?!
Amy says
Loft had some shorts on sale a few weeks ago – I wish I’d picked up more than one pair! Try looking there!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Hurray for sleeping in! I love Sundays for that. Have fun shopping today! That’s what I’m doing today too. I’m on the hunt for a skinny brown belt, which is actually so much harder than it sounds.
Namaste Gurl says
I love shopping at Old Navy, Target and Gap for comfortable shorts– and everything, of course 🙂 They seem to be reasonably priced and just what I’m looking for! have a good day!
Sarah@The Flying ONION says
I’m a big fan of the bermuda style shorts I picked up at Banana Republic! Usually the GAP has some good fitting ones as well. 😀
Your cereal sounds just perfect. 😀
Carrie says
Wow, it sounds like so many of us readers are shaped just like you!!! I echo what most folks say (Loft, J Crew) but my biggest recommendation is don’t go cheap and if you find a style you like, get at least two or three pairs. If you get good quality, they’ll last for years and you will probably be picking basic colors and styles that aren’t going to go out of style. I haven’t had to shop for shorts in about four years!
Alexia (Dimple Snatcher) says
Hmmm, I stopped in Old Navy briefly and saw that they have some JUST IN cute shorts!!
Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn says
Where did you find puffed quinoa?! I want.
KathEats says
Bulk bins!
kaila @ healthy helper! says
Sounds like you have an awesome day off planned! Food shopping is on my agenda too! Speaking of which….I better get going!
Kelly says
Just got some cute ones from Eddie Bauer….The Loft ones always look nice as well…
Cassie says
Looks delicious anyway! I would try Target and Banana Republic.
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
I personally LOVE the Loft and Gap. Both sell non-cuffed shorts 🙂
Crazy bowl of cereal you have their btw. Looks awesome. I would never think to combine all of that… what inspired you to do that?
J3nn(Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
I was feeling like cereal this morning, too. Have fun at Whole Foods!
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
I wish I could help! But I’ve never really bought shorts in my adult life!!! But the ones I have seen on display that look nice are banana republic? not sure if it’ll fit perfectly though! I’m no help. 🙁 hahaa.
Emily @ Savory and Savage says
Good luck on the hunt for the perfect shorts. My friends all rave about the J Crew ones.
Meg says
Hey Kath,
Both Old Navy and Ann Taylor loft have great shorts right now! I prefer the Ann Taylor loft ones- good space in legs and rear and really flattering 😉
I hope this helps!

Your cereal bowl looks delicious! I just ate breakfast an hour ago, but your bowl is making me hungry again. That’s not a good sign. Ha!
Good luck finding shorts. I hear you on the cuffed shorts. So annoying right? If they DO stayed cuffed, they fold the wrong way or something. Ugh. I only wear shorts that don’t need to be ironed. 🙂
gas says
Saw your smiling mug on Drudge!!
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
I’m not into cuffed shorts either! Hope you find something you like…I just get mine where ever…F21, Charlotte Russe, Bebe, Express, whatever is on SALE. haha!
Glad you got some zzzz’s too!

Have a wonderful Sunday! Sorry I’m no help in the shorts department! I only own two pairs! :O If you find a great place please tell us about it!
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
My favorite shorts come from Old Navy.. and I believe they meet all of your requirements.. especially the no cuffs.. those are horrible! They definitely are made to last.. and are just plain old comfy!

Check out Ann Taylor Loft. They have shorts girls like us (small waist but full hips) and they have lots of shorts options depending on what you’re looking for!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
J Crew has good shorts!
Sophie says
Definitely Ann Taylor Loft! I have a small waist and muscular legs and they fit without gaping too much in the waist.
Good luck!
Mary says
I live mountain hardware shorts! They’re at REI or Dicks sporting goods!
Kim says
I’m SO glad you asked the question about shorts! I’m almost 5’10”, but I have the same problem with the “muscular pear” shape(I love that, too! So thanks to the commenter above for that) with thick thighs, a larger butt, and a tiny waist. I’ve pretty much avoided shorts altogether for that reason and stuck with skirts and dresses for warm weather, but I’d love to be able to wear shorts too.
Tracy says
I love Dickies shorts! You may have to order them online, or I find them when kids are going back to school and they have uniform stuff for sale!
seana says
I agree w/ Old Navy and J Crew. I have the opposite problem, no waist and no booty. It’s hard for to find stuff that fits me as well. Good luck !
Jo says
I have the same problem, and I have to wear longer shorts to work too – not necessarily a problem for you, but nonetheless – my favorites:
– gap boyfriend shorts. So comfy!
– Target makes a pair of cargo shorts – they ARE cuffed, but I don’t like cuffs either so I just cut the string making them cuffed and ironed them flat.
– EMS (Eastern mountain sports, if you don’t have them) makes super awesome shorts too – definitely my favorite of all 3! And they’re not super sporty either.
Lana says
Hi Kath, I have been making smoothies lately. I use silken tofu (which is really out of my element) berries, a little apple juice and ice… It makes me a great breakfast!! I have some allergies so a smoothie for breakfast is a really great alternative.
KathEats says
Cville Coffee makes a tofu smoothie and it’s great!
jenna k says
i’m SUPER picky about shorts, but i really like the 5″ inseams from old navy and j crew. although, if you go the j crew route, make sure they’re not made from the thinner fabric they have… those get very wrinkled! both brands fit my larger bottom and come in a zillion colors!
Hannah says
Honey peanuts, sunflower butter, and coconut! Bliss!
