The Rubber Hand

The strangest thing happened to me at 3am this morning when the husband got up for work:

I’ve been sleeping with my arms wrapped under my stomach (to keep me warm!) and occasionally they fall asleep. Well last night my arm DIED. It was so numb that I couldn’t even lift it. So I had to take my other hand and physically MOVE my arm out from under me. In the process my numb hand snapped back and hit me in the face and I didn’t feel it so it felt just like a rubber hand in my head. SO WEIRD!!!!!!!!!!! I hate the feeling of blood rushing back into my limbs. Luckily I don’t think I suffered any serious nerve damage!!

I woke up at 5:00 to get going on the day. (YAY it’s Friday!!) At the gym I did 45 minutes on the ET and a round of upper body weights: 2 sets of 15 of biceps, shoulder press, triceps, deltoids, and chest, all on an aerobics step to keep my heart rate up.

Once home, I got to continue playing hostess because my friend Kelsey had a project emergency and had to come to my house at 7:30 to finish our semester project for Nutrition in the Lifespan. I made her oatmeal and coffee while she worked 🙂

The combo included a new treat: Maple Pecan ProBar!

Today’s combo:

  • 1/3 cup oats, soy milk, water
  • 1 tiny banana
  • 2 tbsp wheatberries
  • 1 tbsp raisins
  • Pinch salt, vanilla
  • 1/8th a crumbled ProBar
  • Spoonful Barney Butter

The ProBar, which is all organic, raw, vegan whole foods – me likes! – tasted delicious. The maple flavor was the perfect amount to now overpower the bar and the nuts were nice and chunky. And I loved the whole flax seeds in it to crunch between my teeth. My gripe? This TINY 1″ portion was 100 calories (that’s 1/4 of the 400 calorie bar)! It’s just too calorie dense for me to use regularly, but these would be perfect for an athlete or someone aiming to gain weight without feeling stuffed:

    Oh my, I know just how you feel about your hand feeling like rubber!!! That happens to me like once every 2 weeks. I literally have to use my “undead” hand to pick up the “dead” hand and move it!!! Haha…my Mom says the same thing happens to her, too. So strange!

    Oh I hate when that happens! There was one time where my arm was hanging off the bed and fell asleep. I woke up and couldn’t move my arm or find it so for a split second I thought it fell off. LOL Then I realized it was just asleep and I had to move it with my other hand.

    Oh my gosh, the same things happen to my arms! Whenever I sleep on my stomach, I put my arms up underneath my pillow and I’ll wake up with them being totally rubber! I’ve hit myself in the face numerous times with my sleeping arms.

    Good Morning! It is 8:20 here in WA state. I have to say I absolutely love reading your blog! I look forward to the 3 posts per day, everyday! I have begun eating oatmeal again since reading your blog and am in love with it! I have tried many yummy combos, but I have to say the most amazing part I notice is the increase in my energy throughout the day. I usually have the oatmeal after my workout and find that I am satisfied for several hours and my energy stays up. Before the oatmeal I would inevitably start to crash/fall asleep when I put my 2 y/o son down for a nap around noon or 1pm. Now I have no difficulty staying awake and getting tons done while he sleeps. Anyway…I am rambling…I thought I would post since you’re having a contest/drawing for the bars, but also to say, “Thank you so much!”

    That’s so strange about your arm! Oliver Sacks wrote a really cool book (The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat) about neurological issues that cause weird things to happen in your brain. Like, seeing your own leg in bed and thinking it was someone else’s. I know your arm just fell asleep, but it’s still pretty interesting!

    And I get that numb hand thing every once in a while. For some reason, I’ll put my arm above my head while sleeping, then wake up in the middle of the night and it will be numb. Once I woke up with my numb arm resting on my cheek, which was creepy, since I couldn’t feel that it was my own arm! Scared the crap outta me!

    I had the same thing happen to me a couple of times. One time, the lack of sensation in my “dead” arm made its way into my dream and I dreamt that my arm had been amputated … needless to say I woke up pretty freaked out and then freaked out even more when I couldn’t find my arm (it was above my head)!

    I’m reading for Yokohama, Japan, although I’m from Kinderhook, New York, and on the 1-in-667+ chance I win, anything shipped to my parents will reach me in the end. I’ve been reading your blog for about two months and have been so inspired. I’m eating oatmeal for breakfast every morning and loving it. I made the goat cheese and nut chicken and my boyfriend declared it the best food he’d ever eaten. I had to agree. It’s a challenge to find some of the ingredients here, but substituting kabocha for squash made a delicious risotto, and eggplant parmesan is just as lovely with Japanese eggplant. Thank you for the inspiration!

    This happened to me, with both arms. I could not feel my arms, and because I’d fallen asleep on my back, with my head resting on my arms, I couldn’t see them when I looked down.

    And I was pregnant and had to pee immediately upon awakening, with, evidently, no arms.

    Plus, I tended to get leg cramps in the mornings and would have to rub out the cramp before I could get out of bed to go pee. This morning was not exception. But, I had no arms.

    It was a desperate morning. Thank goodness my husband hadn’t left for work yet. At that moment he realized having a pregnant wife was no picnic.

    Thank goodness morning sickness wasn’t an issue!

I seem to get some serious motivation from reading your experiences with chemistry and all of the food courses that I am also taking at my University.
