Goooooddd morning!! We had such a fun time together this weekend. I took Mazen to the Albemarle County Fair on Friday evening! We met some of our friends there and enjoyed riding the train and saying “hi” to all of the animals.
This guy is just back from his marathon training, which he ran in his moisture-wicking workout shirt:
And this guy says, “wuz up y’all?!”.
Apparently, Dada lets him get slushies, so I had to cave. Seeing the joy in his face > the guilt of artificial sugar syrup in his body. (Good news: the white shirt did just fine!)
We did a honey tasting together and checked out the tractors.
Matching boots!!
We weighed the food options for dinner up at the fair and decided to hit the road in search of something a little more nutritious. Chipotle was on the way home! I don’t go there often but it was delicious, and I love that they care about the quality of their meat.
Saturday morning smoothies!
On Saturday morning we hung out with our plumber, because on Friday night I discovered that the brewery sink was overflowing with a week’s worth of rotting kitchen sewage. OMG. You would not believe the smell! Here’s the sink after I spent over an hour cleaning it and the floor beneath it on Sunday morning…
Saturday lunch with Lauren! Salad with homemade herby dressing, manchego, peppers, and a pesto parmesan chicken burger from Whole Foods. Plus we shared a glass of wine!
Mazen went to spend the afternoon with Matt, and I headed to a pool party. This cute swan came in the Must Have Box that Popsugar sent me! He loves those Lila Wines.
The pool party ended quickly when this happened:
I went to dinner at The Fitzroy on Saturday night. It’s in the old Blue Light Grill space, and they did a fantastic job with the renovations!
I shared some delicious BBQ shrimp, a fluffy pretzel, halibut and a kale Caesar salad. Thumbs up!
On Sunday morning Mazen and I ran lots of errands after a few hours of house cleaning. Fuel first:
We went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond to look for a beach umbrella that was out of stock, and bought air fresheners for the brewery instead. We had lunch at Zoe’s Kitchen. Love the salmon kebobs there! Then grocery store.
On Sunday afternoon we went to a cute birthday party for a friend, and had Dr. Ho’s pizza and homemade strawberry cake for dinner. I didn’t do much cooking at home this weekend, so I’m making up for it this week!

Costco. We’ve been running around searching for beach umbrellas too and yesterday afternoon,my husband returned triumph from Costco. He said they had a whole shipment! Off to Chris Greene lake we went.

The brewery you reference-is that where Matt works now? Or is that from Matt’s home brewing days in the basement? I was confused 🙂
KathEats says
from the home brewing days! His brewery opens in Sept.
Carla says
The sport Brella is the best beach or otherwise umbrella out there. Stays put with nice shade. Amazon sells it and SAMs club.
KathEats says
I think that’s the one I bought at Amazon!

We were driving up I81 from Knoxville back home to New York on Saturday afternoon and went through some of those storms! So scary – you could not see a thing – and all those trucks made me so nervous!
Erika says
Those storms rocked us in NC too. Looks like a great weekend and the fair looks so fun! ready for our fairs to kick off next month.

I always love seeing how full of fun your weekends are, Kath!
Kerry says
You should make raspados! Even the dog doesn’t looking Mexican ice cream shops make their own fruit syrups. It’s pretty easy and a good project for Mazen.

This is a compound question related to the sink.
I am a homebrewer also (though a mere amateur compared to what Matt is…I use some grain but not like what it sounds like he uses)
I just brew in my kitchen and use the basics there. What is special about that sink? Also, with the back up from the kitchen sink, is that brewing specific or did you have a line problem outside your house? Is this something that homebrewers or just regular home cooks need to worry about? Sorry for your pain with that (and smells).
KathEats says
Hey Alan,
The brewery sink is just big and deep with a special sprayer that makes cleaning up a lot easier than a much smaller kitchen sink. Our problem was a clog about 10 feet down the link, but we don’t know what was clogging it. It could have been collapsed chips of piping (the house is 75 years old) from not being used much this year, or it could have been something from the kitchen (like an increase in coffee grounds down the drain since I started french pressing more). The pipes are old cast iron ones that go to the sewer line despite the fact that the plumbing inside the house is brand new. The plumber told me to be very careful what I put down the garbage disposal, and if Matt does any keg cleaning over here, he needs to be careful not to put too many solids down the drain. If you have a brand new house I wouldn’t worry too much, but if you’re house is old I wouldn’t let much of anything escape! The bathrooms are all on the other side of the house with their own sewer line, so thankfully this wasn’t that kind of sewage, and the kitchen sink never felt it because the basement sink would overflow before the water would back up to the kitchen upstairs. That’s the reason it took me a while to figure out this was happening! It was gross, but I’m going to keep a closer eye on things now.
Clare says
never, ever put coffee grounds in the disposal! a simple google would let you know that grounds are one of the number one culprits of clogs! glad it seems to be fixed now, and hooray for the occasional frozen sugar treat!
KathEats says
Oh I don’t pour them in! I try to get most into the trash can, but there are always some left when I rinse, and our pipes just must be that sensitive.
Sarah says
You can compost coffee grounds, or actually just throw them straight into the yard. We fill our French press halfway with water and dump the water+used grounds into the flower beds, veggie garden, etc. With a little practice and maybe a long spoon to swirl things up before you dump, you can get pretty much all the grounds out. Much easier than emptying into the trash, better for your pipes, and good for your soil to boot!
Alan says
Thanks for answering Kath, and I have heard about the danger of coffee grounds. I have been putting them outside as suggested below and this is proof why. I wish you and your sink very well!! And no more smells yuk.
Aimee says
Hey Kath, just wondering since you mentioned it if Matt still brews at the house. It seems like a big operation for apartment life! I know you said you guys were still friendly but I didn’t know if the house was “neutral territory” or just yours now.
KathEats says
He has brewed here a little, but now that Random Row is brewing he’s doing it all there. He still uses the basement for storing things and cleaning.
Hannah @ eat, drink, and save money says
I’m a big Chipotle fan too! Their meat just tastes better!

Just wanted to let you know that Kona Ice is actually sweetened with stevia and has natural flavorings. You should check out their website kona-ice.com

Oh my bad!! That’s great to know!

I have family in Albemarle! It’s such a small place. I love NC each time I visit. How close are you to Albemarle? Small World!
KathEats says
This was Albemarle county Virginia!!
Bobbie says
Ha! Ha! Thanks for clarifying Kath. I feel like I should have known that being a long-time reader. 🙂
KathEats says
🙂 you were excited!
