All night long the little overnight oats fairies were hard at work!
Making me this gorgeous bowl of breakfast!
A small climate problem: I got a big craving for sticky, doughy overnight oats when it was 75 degrees outside. It is now 23 degrees. And it was WAY too cold for this breakfast! I had to have an extra cup of coffee just to warm up! Note to self: when it’s 100 degrees outside and you are too stubborn for air conditioning, remember this day.
The Mix
Last Night
- 1/3 cup rolled oats
- 1/3 cup strained yogurt
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- Pinch salt
- Half banana
- 3 beautiful Florida strawberries
- 1 tbsp dried cherries
~Overnight in fridge~
This morning
- Nature’s Path Hemp Plus granola ( <—- If a granola bandit was tying back my arms and making me choose a favorite granola of all time, this would be it!)
- Honey Crunch PB
It may have been frigid, but it was 100% delicious!
After a month of heckling, we JUST got the password to design our Great Harvest Cville website! I’ll be spending my entire day trying to get it up and running, breaking only for a conference call and a run!
Kristina says
Haha I had overnight oats this morning too – a bit too cold for them here as well, but there’s definitely something to be said for waking up to a breakfast that makes itself 🙂
emily says
Good luck with the website! At first glance I thought your oats were topped with gummi bears (like a late Halloween craving?!?!) but berries actually sound tastier. Gummi bear oats might be pretty exciting though 🙂
Christie {Nourishing Eats} says
I am in awe of your empty fridge. I can never get mine down that low no matter how hard I try. I think you are much better at only buying what you need 😀
Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete says
I had a cold smoothie for breakfast — I kind of wish I had had a warm bowl of something instead!
Have fun with the website layout!
Hope says
What an amazing looking breakfast! I really need to make overnight oats again. I haven’t had them since the summer! Good luck with your website! That is so exciting! 🙂
Megan says
YUM! I’ll be having overnight oats soon too! Such a great breakfast!
Looking forward to seeing your GH website…hopefully you’ll be selling the t-shirts!???
OH, the ABCs of me have been floating around the blog world and I thought maybe you’d want to take part as a fun little post, just sharing another side of you to your readers. I did mine at

if you want to copy the format.
KathEats says
Oh fun – I might do that if I can remember!
Krissy - Shiawase Life says
I make overnight oats at least 3X a week during the work week…but since I just soak with almond milk, I still heat it up in the morning in the microwave for 90 seconds before topping with granola =) It’s the best of both worlds for me!!
Ashley says
I love hemp granola too! Your comment yesterday about juicing a banana had me rolling in laughter!! Just the thought was so funny…I have no idea if that would work. Might not create much juice, but you might get a little flavor in there. 🙂 Not sure!
Ashley says
I think I was laughing so hard because I was picturing someone squeezing a banana, trying to juice it. 😉
KathEats says
🙂 I’ll get my mind out of the gutter now..
Marina says
I adore overnight oats, but it’s really really cold here, I can’t wait for warmer weather and cold breakfasts 🙂
kaila @ healthy helper! says
have you ever tried banana “softserve” on your overnight oats? It is sooo delicious! I then top it with all my usual cereals and granolas, it’s like a perfect mixture of textures and flavors!
KathEats says
Not on oatmeal, but I love it in general 🙂
KathEats says
(Because I don’t want to wash the Cuisinart at 8AM!)
Christin@purplebirdblog says
I’ve done that before… so good!
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
I have been trying to do overnight oats for a week now. I just keep forgetting at night to do it. I love using frozen fruit… By the time its morning they are completely thawed and the juice is so yummy!
Victoria says
Kath– I have been reading your blog for over 2 years now! (I love it!!)
I was catching up this morning at work when I saw you are going to be in MARCO ISLAND this weekend!!! I am also going to be there!
Are you staying at the Marriot Resort?
KathEats says
Wheeeeee!
Meg says
Hooray for the website 🙂 I hope you have an awesome day – and KEEP WARM! I always pour an extra cup too on colder mornings.
Jen @ keepitsimplefoods.com says
Love overnight oats! Waiting for the weather to warm up a bit so I can eat them lots and lots.
Amy says
I think I’m just over wintry breakfasts like hot oats. I’ve been having smoothies and overnight oats all week! I’m ready for spring!
Amanda says

Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I know, I wasn’t ready for it to get colder! Breakfast does look delicious though! Have fun getting the website up! Can’t wait to see it!
Heather says
Its too cold for me and overnight oats – I like them best with fresh berries!
Good luck with your website design!
Dorry says
I agree about the favorite granola! I can spot Nature’s Path from a mile away. I love the one with pumpkin seeds, too, but the flavor of fhemp plus reminds me of cookies…like Pecan Sandies or some other shortbread. Amazing.
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
Those oats do look delicious 🙂
I couldn’t help but notice how clean your fridge is! It makes me want to clean mine 🙂
Amanda- The Nutritionist Reviews says
Looks like a great bowl of overnight oats! And dang, your fridge is so clean and empty!
Felicia (a taste of health with balance) says

Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
That bowl is absolutely gorgeous!!! And I cannot get over how clean (albeit fairly empty) the top shelf of your fridge is. Makes mine look like a mess!!! 🙂 Congrats on the website password… I hope all goes well with getting it going today!
Karen says
Hi Kath,
Thanks for putting so much time and work into this blog! I love reading it! Did you see Mark Bittman’s wonderful op-ed in the nytimes today on the benefits of real oatmeal? It’s a great piece: http://opinionator.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/02/22/how-to-make-oatmeal-wrong/?hp
Alaina says
I saw the 15* we were having here and immediately made a bowl of oats. I understand the need to warm up inside. 🙂
Have a good day!
Valerie @ City|Life|Eats says
I had the opposite problem today – woke up to sunshine (albeit 25 degrees outside) and craved a cold SIAB. Went with your Chocoberry from a couple of weeks ago, topped with bits of a homemade granola bar instead of a muffin.
Ann @ Day by Day says
Oh I love overnight oats. I can’t remember what used to be my go-to breakfast before I discovered them on your blog. Good luck with the website design! I’m sure it’ll be great, especially since you have experience!
rebecca lustig says
I’m liking the choice of the placemat, today. I feel like I’m ready to go into battle!
Jenny (Fit Girl Foodie) says
Yum I love overnight oats! Those look incredible, luckily it’s still really hot here so the weather is perfect for them.
Camille says
I can’t wait to see the site when it is up! Have fun designing!
linda says
I still put my overnight oats in the microwave for one minute. It takes the chill off and makes them even more creamy.
Kat says
I make mine in a pie pan…then in the morning put it in the oven for a few minutes to warm it up!! Very enjoyable on a cold morning!!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
I was reading this thinking, “I wonder what would happen if you microwaved overnight oats…”
And then everyone beat me to the idea. 🙂 LOL! I think putting them in the oven would be awesome! Toasted coconut and melty PB on top, with a drizzle of almond milk. I do love breakfast!
Christine says
I always wondered how you had overnight oats when it was so cold out — did you have some on your Great Harvest trip recently?! Brrrr!!!
Sarah (Running To Slow Things Down) says
I have been eating overnight oats and breakfast cookies like it’s my job…which is kind of ridiculous, since it was -2 yesterday. Just wait until summer, which is when I’ll probably start craving hot oats.
My cravings don’t always make sense. 😉
lynn @ the actor's diet says
good luck with the website – i’m sure it’ll be great, knowing the designer!
Ellie @ The Mommyist says

I’ll try to send up some warmer weather to you. 🙂
Johanna B says
I started my day with a great big green monster. Then I crawled under the covers to warm up for a few minutes. It was too cold here for a frozen banana.
Vanessa says
Can’t wait to see the Great Harvest site!! Oh and I just bought your Shenandoah Joe coffee package at Opensky!! I’ve been dying to try it and since I can’t make another trip to C’ville this is the next best thing!!! 🙂

how is your fridge so clean? do you do any covering of overnight oats or any baking soda//odor absorber in there?
KathEats says
I don’t cover them – I didn’t even think of that!
Natalia - a side of simple says
Yay! Congratulations about the website!
P.S. I think that’s my favorite placemat of yours. I’m aboslutely in love with toile designs and green + pink together are perfect! Do you know where you got it?

chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
Yum! I try so hard not to pull out the overnight oats in the winter for that reason alone. You should do a fridge post – it’s neat and clean just like the rest of your house!!!
Sisters Running the Kitchen says
so funny- i made these for the first time (this season) today. i agree though- better in the warm weather but i still loved itttttt
Anne @ Baking Me says
That is so exciting that you are opening a Great Harvest. There is one up the street from me set to open this Tuesday, I can’t wait:)
KathEats says
Oh fun! which town?
Morgan says
Interesting! I never knew you could prepare oats like this. Looks like I know what’s for breakfast tomorrow!
Amelia (Eating Made Easy) says
I made your honey crunch peanut butter yesterday — what is it about peanut butter that makes it so heavenly? Inspired me to write a post today comparing the nutritionals of all the different nut butters, since some people seem so bias against PB:

Rachel says
I’ve always wanted to try overnight oats..but the thought of cold oats really turns me off.. Is there a reason you didn’t reheat them on the stove or in the microwave? Does this affect the oats somehow? I can’t imagine it’d ruin them, but maybe it does, considering I’ve never heard of anyone reheating their ON oats!
KathEats says
Well I didn’t want to heat the yogurt for fear of it curdling. I little nuking might have helped. I also didn’t want to go into the cold basement where the microwave is to do that!
Pat Kilmain says
Hey, Kath. Check out this article on McDonald’s oatmeal….

I can’t wait for summer! Overnight oats are so good, but I need my hot bfast when it’s so cold
Stacey (The Home-Cooked Vegan) says
have fun designing your website! Sounds like that is right up your alley 😉 It’s chilly here too! Cereal was replaced with steamy leftovers from the fridged, hehe 😀

Your fridge is so ridiculously clean. I’m jealous.
claire says
OK, that refigerator is so clean, it just makes me feel bad. 🙂
Annette @ enjoyyourhealthylife says
I want to have some overnight oats….but I love my warm oats too much 🙁
Baking 'n' Books says
Your probably too busy too answer! – but …do you melt the nut butter on top or just plunk down a tablespoon or two?
Anybody?…
Mom says
I’m prettty sure she just plunks it.
Baking 'n' Books says
Thanks – “Mom” 😉
Namaste Gurl says
Classic KATH overnight oats– love it!
Lisa says
Those oats look delicious, but I must echo what everyone else is saying: HOW in the world is your fridge so clean/empty?!?
Halley (Blunder Construction) says
Don’t forget to circulate the blood in your legs… designing is fun but can swallow you whole if you don’t watch out 🙂
Eunice says
Hi Kath!
I’ve been a lurker on your blog for a while now, and this is the first comment I’m posting.
I was browsing through the NY Times today, and saw an article Mark Bittman wrote on oatmeal; I think it’s only appropriate that my first comment be on oatmeal (considering how much you love & eat it! It’s my everyday breakfast at college too :D) I think this might pique your interest. I hope you enjoy!

your fridge looks so clean!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
I haven’t had overnight oats in waaaay too long.. cold weather or not!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I really want to try that granola, but since it’s made in a factory that also processes nuts, I’m not sure if I should take the risk. 😛
Heidi - apples under my bed says
What a yummy breakfast – despite the chilly weather!! Extra cup of coffee = a great fixer 😉
Heidi xo
Allison @ Happy Tales says
I <3 overnight oats. I just <3 oats in general, though… so glad they're so versatile!
Annie says
I always heat up my overnight oats! A minute in the microwave and they’re perfect for summer. A minute and a half and they’re perfect for winter. Whole Foods had an overnight oats recipe in their store years back and that’s when I learned about them.
Hannah says
How exciting! Things are starting to move so quickly with the business, aren’t they?
Justeen @ Blissful Baking says
Ohh I miss overnight oats! I can’t wait until the weather warms up, so I can eat them all the time!

I’ve just been recently reading your blog and you have me addicted. I get so many great new ideas by reading it! Thank you 🙂

I eat hot oatmeal in the summer time and cold cereal in the winter…I understand your predicament 🙂
ilana says
Love your comment about Nature’s Path! The granola bandit! Lol! 🙂
Rachel @ Healthy Teacher says
Do you leave yours uncovered overnight? I was thinking about that….I cover mine in Tupperware and take it to the gym sometimes.
