Friday.
Despite some trouble with naps in the AM, we had a great day on Friday! I again felt well rested, and breastfeeding seems to have turned a corner. My little baby bird has learned to open his mouth wide in anticipation and the pain has subsided…..for the most part…but not totally.
For breakfast I made un-overnight oats, which is just the same ingredients put together in 5 minutes.
Yogurt, milk, oats, chia seeds, berries, cinnamon, granola and sunbutter, all mixed together.
The texture is much soupier than overnight oats, but the flavors are just as fun!
I’ve been able to shower daily thanks to extra hands and bouncy seats. Once Mazen went down for a nap, I hopped in with an ear peeking out of the curtain and was able to get dressed for the day no problem. Too bad I was covered in breast milk an hour later!!
We had a fun morning of eat, play, sleep with a few cries here and there and then a late lunch when dad came home.
I had leftovers from Lynsie’s dinner – herby chicken over kale salad with noodles, tomato, pine nuts and a rosemary garlic roll. It’s been wonderful to have some dinners brought to us and equally wonderful to have the leftovers for quick lunches!
Our newborn shoot photos are here. Sarah Cramer did a FANTASTIC job capturing so many sweet moments! I’ll try to throw a few into each post for a few days – I can’t choose a favorite!
Ok this might be a favorite : ) Love the bike pillow from Etsy in the background!
Dinner was a wonderful treat from Auntie Faith!
She brought us some little lasagnas with Monticello eggplant, homemade ricotta and a rich tomato sauce.
So tasty!
Plus side salads. And since they were Faith salads, they were the best ever! She puts some extra love in all of her greens.
I was able to get in a nap early evening because we had to stay up late (= 8:30) to greet Aunt Larbs and Uncle Matt!!
They drove up for the weekend with my mom for a visit
And brought a birthday cake!! We all went bonkers over how delicious this was.
Between the 6 of us, we finished nearly the whole thing. It’s all in the frosting!
Sweet dreams were had by all.
Allie@LiveLaughEat says
Even I’m not showering every day and I’m without child. You’re makin’ motherhood look easy!
Emily @ Perfection Isn't Happy says
Those little lasagnas look so good! And usually, I’m not even a lasagna person!

Lovely photos…sure to be treasured! Such a special time…enjoy! The lasagna looks delish…with your description…I could almost taste all the fall flavours! Cake looks divine…what was the darker filling? Chocolate? Dates? Raisins? Chestnut? Intrigued! Have a fun filled all in the family weekend!

Grace @ Grace Dishes says
I loved the idea of taking shifts when it comes to baby duty allowing one parent to get amazing rest in the other room. I’m not a mom yet but this kind of advice is GOLDEN!
Your photos are so precious. Babies grow up so fast so I can understand wanting to enjoy every minute of it. Congratulations again!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Ahhh Kath the shoot photos are gorgeous!! I love the one of Mazen in your arms with the big yawn. SO cute!!
Jeri says
I love how you guys, you and your friends and family, dress up a meal in the cutest but elegant dishes. It makes menwantnto go out and buy new dishes! As if I need a reason.
Is the lasagna veggie only? And the eggplant chopped up like a meat filling? Still trying to incorporate a meatless day or two into the weekly plans.
KathEats says
Yep! Veggie and layered with the eggplant
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
The photos are so beautiful! And glad Maze gets to meet his aunt and uncle!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
Oh my goodness, I can’t get over him! I love the photo of him with your hand on him… His little face is precious!
Jenica says
You, Matt, and Mazen are just so freaking adorable together! I love the family shot. I’ve also been enjoying last minute un-overnight oats in the mornings lately. I got the idea from you, so thanks for that!
Alison says
Glad it’s improving, and remind yourself that his little mouth is getting bigger each day! Applying lanolin after each feeding can help with tender nipples in the early weeks. Tenderness is normal, but breastfeeding is not supposed to hurt! If you’ve got toe curling pain during latch on though, definitely get help from an LC or a LLL Leader! OK, you didn’t ask for advice so I’ll shut up now. 🙂 Keep on keepin’ on!
Allison k says
I’m impressed mazen is already doing a discernible eat, sleep, play pattern. Anderson’s didn’t emerge until about 6ish weeks on its own. But… I didn’t encourage any sort of schedule either, those first few weeks felt like non-stop feeding! But, I guess it worked for us since we’ve never had a supply issue! One word of caution (and since you didn’t post details about your daily routine, I’m just giving unsolicited advice, that you’ve probably already heard) watch for sleepy cues, at under two weeks mazen can probably only stay awake for a very short time. You are doing great mama!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Love those photos! Definitely some real moments there with Matt brushing his teeth and holding Mazen! Sounds like everyone is getting a chance to love on the little man! I’m glad nursing is getting a little better. It does get A LOT easier once they get the hang of it and the pain subsides. I hope you have an incredible Sunday!
Christina @ The Beautiful Balance says
Wow, I was going to say that you are quite amazing to be able to balance a new baby and still take photos and post! I am sure it is SO nice having the extra hands around so that you can at least shower and shovel some type of nutrients into your mouth, haha! Mom of the year!
kim@hungryhealthygirl says

The cake idea is adorable! I hope I got a birthday cake when I was born. :-p
Leslie says
Mind telling us locals where your family got the cake?!
KathEats says
It’s actually from Durham… Larbs brought it up. Wish it were local!
Leslie says
I meant local to Durham, that’s where I am!
KathEats says
Ahhh, right! Larbs says it’s Carolina Cake Company!

It’s not right – you look way too good for just having a baby! You are the perfect example of what to do during pregnancy. Maze is so sweet and I think is starting to look like more of a combo of you two now, before I thought it was all you. I was wondering if you would mention in one of your posts about your decision to not have any family there for the birth, besides Daddy of course. That always makes me wonder what the thought process is when people do that. So glad breast feeding is going well. That is truely one of the best things ever!
KathEats says
I never would have felt comfortable with an audience… Even my closest family
Erin says
Everyone is different! Both of my parents were there when I had my son. My son is named after my mother, so it was extra special for her. My dad was in the room but he sat in a chair in a corner behind my head, so he was a part of everything without actually “seeing” anything private. It worked out great for us, but I certainly see why some people would never want anyone else in the room.
Regina says
Love the one of M and M while Matt’s brushinh his teeth. Captures things perfectly 🙂
Cindy says
Relax! There’s no reason you can’t shower every day. I did it, and I raised four kids with a husband who worked 70+ hours per week.
lindsay says
I love the one of Matt brushing his teeth. Such a fun shot:)
Cailin says
I never understood the new mom “I don’t even have time to shower !” deal. When they are newborns you have more breaks / time to shower than as they get older! So its good that you are taking time to shower- babies do fine without their mom for a few minutes – even if no one else is around ;). I found that my daily shower made me more awake and feel more like myself!
Lovely photos and yummy looking cake !
Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles says
Wonderful- for the turning a corner in breastfeeding- an open mouth is a wonderful thing. Haha! ….Auntie Faith is the best, that all looks simply delicious!!! Then, you got cake too! Friday was a winning day!!!!!!! 🙂
seana says
You look great! (And so does Matt and Mazen) Sleep deprivation does you well 🙂
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
It always is all in the frosting…I am a connoisseur 🙂
And my fave pic of the ones in this post is you in the magenta dress and the 3 of you in the kitchen. So candid but everyone has a dreamy blissful look on their faces and like time just stopped and the 3 of you are all that matter to each other in the whole world…just beautiful!

How great are those pictures?! And un-overnight oats? That’s such a good idea! Yesterday I wanted ONO’s in the middle of the day, and didn’t eat them because I didn’t want to wait 6 hours

Regarding the shower thing, my little one Ella now 6 months loved me taking showers from the very first day, it was all about the shower fan!! I put her in the bounce seat and turned on the fan and she loved it. Even sometimes just went to sleep there, i used to look out of the shower now and then, and now she loves waiting for me outside, and when i come out she gives me the biggest smile.
