The smell of cut grass on a spring evening – there is no smell like it! Even though today was relatively chilly compared to our sweltering July evenings, I could sense summer on the horizon by the wafts of dirt and green getting kicked up on the soccer field tonight.
I almost didn’t go to pick-up soccer. It hung over me all day, and I just about sat down with a glass of wine instead. But I went, and of course I’m so glad I did! We spent over an hour playing 8v8, and I covered quite a few miles in the process.
Rewinding back to lunchtime, I whipped this salad together of leftovers from the fridge. Bean salad on salad plus manchego and a few chips on the side.
I swear lunches without bread leave me feeling empty inside because I felt snacky all afternoon. As I was packing up snacks for our road trip tomorrow one of everything went into my mouth!
Two weeks ago during soccer I was so hungry, so tonight I attempted dinner beforehand – an open-faced sandwich with goat cheese, smoked salmon and cucumber. It was a little heavy on the stomach in the first 20 minutes of playing, but then all was well. Figuring out dinner (+ veggies) with evening soccer is always a huge challenge! I could just eat cereal or PB&Js but then I’d be missing out on so much of the healthy food I normally get in at dinner.
Plus I had few handfuls of these. Ya know, to keep my salt and CHO stores up ; )
M is snuggled in his bed, and I’m ready to get into mine and start a new book after a nice hot shower!

what a lovely evening! I know how you feel about eating/workout struggle! I have to balance that and study/caffeine intake too haha. Im studying for the first of my medical boards and the CHO reminds me I gotta get on that biochem chapter..

That salad looks delicious! I love manchego cheese!

Why not just do a bigger lunch that will tide you over? I always have dinner at lunch time if I’m training in the evening and then eat light when I get back 🙂

I need to try that next time!

You must have been Italian in another life, lol! My husband is from Italy and he HAS to have bread with every meal (except for pasta!).

I loooove the smell of fresh cut grass. I only get that when I’m leaving work since I commute out to the suburbs but live in the city. It’s even sweeter at the end of a hard day!
That’s interesting you’ve noticed that about bread! I’m the opposite. I feel like if I eat bread I want to eat my entire pantry the rest of the day, which would usually consist of more bread. I swear if there was a queen of carbohydrates, it would be me.

I love nice, green grass! However, stepping and walking in it is a different story 😛

I used to feel the same about the lack of bread, but I find fruit + nuts do a good job of subbing, while adding some fibre + protein and healthy fats to the mix.
If I had a baker for a husband I’m sure I’d be eating bread for every meal, even if it was a small sliver like you often do

You could try cereal or a pb&j before soccer and a salad after…. easy on the tummy before, and fill up on healthy veggies after.

I don’t always have a chance to comment much anymore, but I just want you to know how amazing all of your meals always look. It makes me want to jump in and take a bite!
Yay for soccer! Have you ever considered eating a protein/fat prior to your game (like a couple hardboiled eggs) then follow up with the fiber (eating your veggies post workout or even a veggie packed smoothie) so that you’re still getting all your nutrients, just split up?
Just a thought…..I always feel bogged down if I eat too much fiber/green veggies prior to working out. Guess we all have to find our ‘go to’. happy weekend!
